Can I ask your top 10 fav fics ever (from any fandom, if you don't mind)?
Also, just curious, is there a story behind your name "ultfreakme"?
*stares at my 100 bookmarks* *stares at my fandom heap which is somehow messier than my laundry heap*
I shall try my best:
1. Upon Our Silver Bridge by TheWanderingHeart : It's a XiCheng fic and it is, so good. It's a long fic where the character Lan Xichen secludes himself out of grief from being fooled by his best friend for decades and being unknowingly complicit in killing his other best friend, slowly succumbing to an unknown illness that weakens him daily. In this time, Jiang Cheng contacts Lan Xichen through letters and the two slowly fall in love through brief meetings, while learning that Lan Xichen doesn't have much time left and that there is no explanation or cure for his sickness......or is there? (huge spoilers if I say the answer for what the illness is but it's WORTH IT when the final reveal happens. I fucking lost my mind).
2. Picture of the Turning Sphere by omphalos: Another XiCheng fic! So Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen had fought in this battle that led to the destruction of one among five great sects, which causes a great unbalance, resulting in a lot of natural disasters and internal discord across the country. There's a comet that the astrologers everywhere consider inauspicious and to prevent further disaster, Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen are identified to be the most perfect, balanced match to accomplish a bunch of divinely-assigned duties to bring balance back before the comet either hits or passes by the earth. Thing is; Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng are barely friends and they are both depressed as fuck and stressed. But they're forced into these trials and slowly fall in love!
3. The Fast Train to Kyoto by courtingstars (FallingSilver): Oh this series. It is the defining AkaFuri fic series. It basically solidified all the tropes in the ship fandom for me. Furihata is an average student and basketball player and Akashi takes an interest in befirending because of a past incident where he absolutely fucking wrecked the dude's self-confidence and energy mid-match and threatened his bestie with scissors to his eyes. With that eventful first impression, these two slowly begin to meet in the middle. It's about learning to trust and open up, basketball, and there's a touch of magic and mystery to it that's slowly interwoven. It's very atmospheric. Akashi's a rich af dude and his mansion is described in an eerie, distant way that makes it seem like its haunted. Their entire relationship has this undertone of Beauty & The Beast but the castle is weird and Belle has secret unidentifiable and undefined powers that you question if it's even real magic or just, human understanding. Idk it's wild if you like the ship it's a fun read.
4. Into the Sinking Horizon by Silver_Porch: My best friend irl wrote this and it's not complete but I KNOW how this fic goes down we talked about it for months. In my heart, this is complete, I know all the story elements and how it ends and it lives rent free in my head. It's about the Kuroko No Basuke cast but Pirate AU. It's extremely well-researched and well-written. The story start with Akashi, a disillusioned prince who wants to escape his father's control and decides to run away with the captain of their guard, Nijimura. Turns out, Nijimura and his family have been cursed to follow the command of Akashi's family so these two go on a quest across the seven seas to find a way to break the curse with their very own plucky pirate crew! It's awesome, do check it out(and perhaps bully my bestie into continuing it mwahahaha)
5. A Soul's Shape by WingsofaBird: I recently finished this and it is amazing! An ItaJun Junpei loves rewrite that's been done up until Shibuya arc. It is heart-wrenching and a really unique take on what would have happened if Junpei got to go to Jujutsu Tech. It gives a lot of time to Junpei's grief and exemplifies exactly why Junpei had a tough time in school and why Jujutsu Tech and being sorcerer isn't going to be a solution to that. He's grieving, alone, and has no one to rely on. Junpei's character is tragic because he's so unreachable in his loneliness despite not wanting to be because of the systems around him and the loathing the systems have created in himself towards himself.
6. The Silver Answer by enemyofrome: It's a Stucky fic! Anyone here from my stucky days? So the Captain America story is about how Steve got super powers through a serum right? What if he didn't? What if 'Captain America' was an illusion created by a special division which uses stage props and other techniques to make it look like there's a superhuman leading a large division? I love this fic because this is based on a real life division called the Ghost Army who used deception techniques like inflatable tanks, recorded sounds etc to make it look like they had a large division.
I love this because Steve in-canon is always the tank, the strong guy. But he was an artist before that and even without the superhuman abilities, he would have fought tooth and nail against Nazis and this fic shows exactly that.
7. despite the threatening sky and shuddering earth (they remained) by praximeter (Zimario): This is also Stucky and it is depressing but also good. Lots of warnings apply, author listed them. But basically it's about how The Winter Soldier's mask is driven into his face and a fixture. He has a lot of other body modifications that are extremely dangerous forced upon him. The fic is about how Steve and the rest of the Avengers help him gain back his autonomy and identity. Though it's a stucky fic I really enjoyed the Sam and Bucky interactions best. It's good if you want Stucky ANGST, it's one of the famous fics in the fandom.
8. Wanting by ac_123: Another Junpei lives fic!!! This one is also about Junpei struggling but a whole new take. We get to see him be somewhat at peace and learning to befriend and interact with the rest of the cast. The plot is building up to be something really cool and I love the story where it's at. I love myself some solid character interactions and world-building, and this one gave a lot of depth into how Junpei's powers can work. Every character interaction and dynamic with Junpei is fun to watch.
That's all I can remember for now, sorry I couldn't muster up 10 ;_;I've read hundreds of fics so it's hard for me to pick. It's like, when you have too many options, it feels like you become less able to choose.
As for my username, ah how embarassing for me. So when I made this I was in high school and taking coding classes and really enjoyed it, also I was way too into anime and studied too much(to noa vail like I always got 80% averages) so people called me a nerd. Now, I was the kinda loser that went "correction, I am not a nerd, I'm not smart eough for that, I'm a geek, i.e., someone who's passionate about certain subject". And I was the 'Ult'imate geek.
"But Riki, 'geek' isn't even in your name!"
I hear you. I tried to get 'ultgeekme' as a username but it was already taken. So the only synonym for geek that WASN'T taken was 'freak'. So. ultfreakme.
Bonus: But then literally no one here calls me 'Ult' afaik and I use Riki to refer to myself. 'Riki' is just 'Kiri' from Kirishima from BNHA but I jumbled the order. He was my favorite character and it sounded gender neutral so I liked it.
Hope that covered everything and the fics, if you take interest, are fun to read!

Me, rereading chapter 5 of Fast Train to Kyoto, through gritted teeth: Courtingstars wrote the progression of Furihata's love: he ran into someone who halted him momentarily (his ex) but continued forward on the right path until he tripped on his own feet exactly mirroring their encounter during the seirin v rakuzan match then he got a little off course but then he sensed Akashi’s aura and turned right to him walking straight to him/the stone and then he is only a foot away searching for the stone and when he is about to give up- Akashi speaks. This is monumental because if you need help to find the stone then you will need help finding love OR as it is heavily implied the person who helps you ends up being the love of your life-
Roommate: uh...
Me, foaming at the mouth: We were supposed to see Akashi come back later, and seek the stones' advice, it was supposed to confirm his love for Furihata, it was going to be a huge moment and we will never have it

Sometimes Love Is Found Where You Least Expect It by The Lion and The Chihuahua (Riren_Love)
~After Furihata ends up witnessing Akashi almost poke Kagami's eye out with a pair of scissors, ending with the scissors creating a cut on Kagami's cheek, Furihata is left traumatized with reoccurring nightmares of Akashi killing him every single night. Until, to Furihata's relief, the nightmares stop two months later.~
The Fast Train to Kyoto by courtingstars (FallingSilver)
~kashi Seijuurou is tired of people keeping him at a distance. One day on a train platform, he encounters a certain panicky point guard from Seirin. And he gets an idea. A terrible, awful, foolish idea… Naturally, he has to go through with it. The question is, will Furihata accept his invitation?~
Angel Dust/Husk
My Kingdom for The Soul of an Angel by meg_a_dork
~"I'll have someone show you t'your room."
"My room?"
Husk nodded. "Everyone on staff gets a room, unless they want to share. But, I figure, with everything about Valentino, you'd like your own space."
"I... just thought you'd want me in your room?"~
Ace of my Heart by Karmawillcollect
~Husk is an overlord, Angel beats him at a game of poker. Husk falls instantly. Face first. Then they have sex.

Please enjoy this illustration for Chapter 5 of The Vanishing Prince by the lovely CourtingStars! I knew as soon as I read it that I wanted to draw the scene with monsters and ghosts passing by Akashi and Furi in Kyoto. Because this section of the fic just screamed Ghibli, I knew I wanted it to be the classic Ghibli style (I know, I need more practice lol). The bridge is directly borrowed from Spirited Away and the clouds are from another Ghibli film which I can’t remember T.T The rest is all original and drawn by me, which is why the perspective is so bad /lol. I have been working on this for a long time and at this point I can’t keep looking at it anymore because the more I look the worse it seems so please just enjoy it as it is (,,꒪꒫꒪,,).  I’m also including an edited “version 2″ that reminded me a lot of watching old VHS tapes as a kid :)
As always thank you to the author for continuously providing us with this gem of a fic. <3
Youkai/mosters/ghosts from fic:
-          Hitodama
-          Rokurokubi
-          Hitotsume-kozou
Other youkai I added:
-          Kiko
-          Suzaku
-          Kappa (I love them they’re silly)
Youkai I made up:
-          Brainless boy spirit
-          Creepy evil grandpa
-          Killer maiko (may be kitsune, up to you)
-          Deadly No Face
-          Purple fisher kid
-          Coal babies in a bucket
I may add even more youkai to this illustration in the future! I will post it here also if I do. If you like this, consider supporting me <3 THANK YOU!

Fanfic Recs: Kuroko no Basket
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but let me say it again. Kuroko no Basket is one of my first (true) loves. It inspired me to write again after going into a hiatus, so it holds a very special place in me. My favorite KnB fics are mostly canon-compliant fanfics that explore the facets of the friendship portrayed in anime/manga. Love for friends IS one of the thematic cores on the series, imo, and the manga effortlessly shows that, too.
Without further ado, here is my first set of recs!
Tumblr media
Canon-compliant fanfics
Crossroads, and Other Places We Met by deplore
Author’s summary: A list of things in the Generation of Miracles’ metaphorical closet: many, many basketballs, most of which are discolored and leather-worn. Lucky items that Midorima has left behind, more for the others than for himself. Single shoes that have long lost their partners and almost forgotten what it is like to be whole. Empty snack bags and ice cream wrappers. A single skeleton. It’s been almost three years, and it’s about time to clear everything out.
Thoughts: My absolute favorite, pun unintended. A very realistic take on the aftermath of the WinterCup where dented friendships are mended. Will warm the cockles of your heart, 10/10.
Ask A Stupid Question by desdemona (starblessed)
Author’s summary: It all started because Momoi and Kuroko were tired of being considered the "innocent ones" among the Generation of Miracles. Kuroko, in his infinite wisdom, decided that if they were going to be given the reputation, they might as well take advantage of it. It was the worst idea of their lives.
Thoughts: Laughter-filled fanfic. Read how Kuroko and Momoi’s plans backfire on them. The GOM (+ Nijimura-san) never disappoint, after all.
The Bridges Between Us by courtingstars (FallingSilver)
Author’s summary: Sometimes you need to say, “I’m sorry,” but you have no idea where to start. After the Winter Cup finals, Kuroko meets with the rest of the Generation of Miracles. But old wounds and a year of separation have damaged their former friendships. The distance between them may be too far to bridge—and at least one of them has other plans.
Thoughts: Verbal closure and apologies are sometimes required to close the wound and heal. This fic shows that really well. It also gives us an interesting, albeit realistic take on Akashi’s “split personality”. Great read.
Anticyclone by orphan_account for half_sleeping
Author’s summary: In which Kise buys an apartment, everyone tries to move in, the Generation of Miracles grow up (or fail to grow up, as it happens), and existential quarter-life crises occur.
Thoughts: Kise-centric fics have always been interesting for me. He’s chaotic, but to be honest, amongst the six GOM members, I think he’s most normal.
Five Times the MiraGen Accidentally Flashed Momoi... by Lys ap Adin (lysapadin)
Author’s summary: Five times Momoi accidentally got more of an eyeful than she'd bargained for (and one time she didn't). Satsuki raised her eyebrows just a bit. "Dai-chan, for pity's sake. Put little Dai-chan away, no one wants to see him."
Thoughts: So much love for Momoi! I’m glad to have found one that accurately portrays her being sweet but also sassy and able to hold her ground with the boys. Tons of laughter for this fic. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one, too.
Check my second rec list for KnB here!
Shout-out to all old and new KnB fans out there! If you haven’t seen the new KnB English dub, do yourself a favor and watch it. I’m not really a fan of anime dub versions, but the script and voice-acting were so praise-worthy (special mention to the VAs of Kagami, Aomine, Kuroko and Kise). I’m not even exaggerating how good it was.

Read the story here or on Ao3.
Also, why do I write this when no one will read it haha
First of all, can I just say that this was super rushed? I really wanted it out by Akashi’s birthday. It was supposed to be about Akashi & the Generation of Miracles & Nijimura and it was supposed to have a happy ending, but I just don’t think I can write it yet, so yeah. Sorry, I’m really crappy. Please forgive me.
“My father was supposed to work together with your father, but now they’re not going to, so my father said we don’t need to be friends anymore,” his schoolmate said.
Okay, so I should probably say that the way I view Akashi has been influenced by courtingstars. I based Aka-child's problems on what she wrote in "The Fast Train to Kyoto" which you should absolutely read. I didn't really think AkaFuri was, like, possible before it, but I was absolutely blown away by this story. Her characterization of Akashi is just perfect. She has such a deep understanding of the characters that everything she writes seems canon. Like, I sometimes forget that what she's written isn't canon. The Generation of Miracles totally meet up every month. What do you mean by "it isn't canon"? Seriously, she's super great. I would read her grocery lists. Or anything she writes.
Bokushi So, I may have talked about how much I love courtingstars. My crappy characterization of Bokushi, although he only makes a super short appearance despite how important he is, was inspired by hers. Note: Please read “Playing Amends” by courtingstars. Actually, please read everything by courtingstars and talk to me about it because I need more people to freak out over her work with.
Midorima/Akashi friendship Midorima is basically my self-insert here. It's not because we're super similar, but because his friendship with Akashi really reminds me of my friendship with this person who I was classmates with for 6 straight years and who ended up in the same school as me afterwards. Our discussions in grade school revolved around, y'know, normal kid stuff, space time, Schrodinger, the periodic table... Yep. Normal stuff. Basically, I imagine MidoAka friendship is full of nerdiness. Look, in this one drama CD, Midorima and Akashi made this color-changing candy for Murasakibara which takes... a lot of nerdiness. They totally talk about the connection of molecular orbital theory and life. At the same time, they can talk about dumb kid stuff, like, I don't know light novels? I feel like Akashi likes Midorima because he can act normal and he won't find it weird, while Midorima likes Akashi because he can be Mr. Smart Kid and Akashi won't find him weird. Also, can I just randomly mention courtingstars again and her story "Fate, Fortune and Oolong Tea"? Featuring MidoAka friendship and TEA. They are absolute tea nerds, and that is one beautiful headcanon.
Osho So, there are two kinds of kings in shogi, according to my very reliable friend, Wikipedia: the osho (king general) and the gyokusho (jeweled general). The king general is used by the higher ranked player, while the jeweled general is used by the lower ranked player. So, yeah, this is supposed to be symbolism... but it kind of failed.
Midorima holding the osho No symbolism. It was actually supposed to be in his shirt's pocket, then I freaked out and tried to remember if the Teikou uniforms have pockets, then I found out they did, but they usually have blazers, so Akashi wouldn't be able to notice the shogi piece, so I thought of setting this in the summer, but I don't think it would've taken them that long to become friends, so I kind of just... made him hold it. Also, I'm sorry for that grammatically incorrect sentence.
Also, can I just talk about how long it took for me to decide whether Midorima should be called “Midorima” or “Midorima-kun”? Because Oreshi addresses people he’s not that close to with “-kun” if they’re the same age, but I don’t know, I just went with Midorima, since at this point, they’ve been teammates for a while.

Tell us a line from your latest wip then tag as many people as there are words.
@itscinnafox tagged me and of course I will always answer her tag call XD I’m super sorry but right now I’m not writting any Akafuri but I am writing a Damijon Injustice AU (Batman and that stuff) because I finished the game just a few weeks ago.
“You lose,” he stated. “So, remember this, humans are not weak.”
It was as if time stopped then, with Damian staring at him with his beautiful green eyes. Jon felt his heart skip a beat in front of this mere human who dared to point a sword at him. This boy who defeated him in a few minutes while being injured and that wore the pride of his race on his chest. And Jon remembered those little stories he heard about how intrepid his mother was and asked himself if this was what his father saw in her. A burning soul ready to fight against everything that dared to go against them.
He was quite sure this was the first time he ever admired a human.
It was also the first time he wanted to kiss someone.
Okay, so there is no way I’m tagging that many people, but hey if you wanted an excuse to use this game you just got one, yes I tag YOU. (also @humanitys-shortest-soldier and @courtingstars because I’m curious)

rereading storming the castle, chapter 8
the moment Akashi sees his father’s usual plate setting and reacts... note these are quotes from @courtingstars Storming the Castle
- when a clatter shook the room ... Akashi was on his feet, rigid. ---- instantly on high alert
- “Why is that there?” His voice was sharp. ---- Seijuurou has hardly ever taken a sharp tone, not in this series, not in cannon
- “Is—is my father home?” Akashi blurted. ---- HE STUTTERED
-  Furihata hardly recognized his voice, it was so strained. Akashi was eyeing the far chair like it was some kind of animal, threatening to pounce.  ---- He’s afraid
- Akashi still hadn’t moved. He looked paralyzed, almost—but then he bristled, and quickly sat down. He glanced at Furihata, then away again. His face was stony. Fixed in an expression that was almost unnervingly neutral. But Furihata could tell it wasn’t neutral. At all. ---- He’s still shaken by this mistake although he now knows there is no threat, he knows that Furihata saw this reaction and he is embarrassed that Furihata can tell that something is deeply wrong with his family, and he is trying to gather himself, close himself off, revert to the “neutral” mask he has been trained to wear and it is all so opposite of their agreement to tell each other things that they struggle with
- Furihata took a deep breath. His pulse beat unsteadily. “Um, Akashi-kun, are you—” ---- Furihata sees all of this and he is concerned for his friend and he is going to ask when-
- “Would you care for something to drink, Furihata-san?” one of the servants asked. ---- The servants do some type of mental math and decide that helping their young master when he desperately needed a moment to gather himself - to decide if he wished to explain why the idea of his father joining them for dinner scared him half to death - and break some general rules about politeness by interrupting an “honored guest”. The first guest to the estate in several years.  The first friend Akashi has brought here, period. ANd just consequentially probably one of the only people who has been brought to this estate who genuinely wouldn’t care about being interrupted at all. They are so concerned with propriety and manners that they half don’t know what to do with themselves when Furihata won’t give them his bags to hold. But they are the only ones who can understand what Akashi’s life has been like in that that pressure cooker. All of his responsibilities, his father’s ideology being forced upon him and overwriting his mother’s kind influence- at least in regards to the house staff, they know his routines, how long he stays up, they know that he goes and rides Yukimaru late at night when he is stressed, they know how strange it was for perfect golden boy Seijuurou to inform them he would be having a friend stay over when they all knew his father would not approve of such frivilous and time wasting activities let alone someone who is clearly not of an “equal station”. With allllll of this, they decide to side with Seijuurou and give him a very needed moment as seen in this following line-
- Across the table, he thought he saw Akashi’s face smooth out a little. Like he was tensing up before, when Furihata was trying to ask if he was okay.
idk just just something something Akashi, despite being brought into a cold home where he is taught to be other, he is still loved. The other fics in this series have moments where Rakuzan shows him love and care while this one doesn’t but this moment shows to me that the servants of the Akashi house, or at least the butler, care for him deeply as well. It just wants me to sit across from him and tell him over and over that he is loved until it gets through to him and he cries

Hi! I saw your meta about Akashi and I jell with it and your fic! could you recommend some other great Akashi fics?
hi! i’m so glad you liked my fic and what i have to say, that’s really cool!
hmm, i haven’t read many fics that focus specifically on Akashi, mostly his relationships with the Miracles or his team, so i hope it’s okay that most of the fic recs i have focus on that - and i hope you enjoy them! some of them are pretty popular, so you may have read them already, sorry
one fic i adore with all my heart is “The Bridges Between Us” by courtingstars, which focuses on the Miracles post-Winter Cup but especially Akashi and Kuroko’s friendship (and they wrote a fantastic meta on akashi that was linked in their fic)
link here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/4547418
another fic by courtingstars that broke me heart and remade it again is “Playing Amends,” about Oreshi and Bokushi post-Winter Cup - it’s probably the closest to what you’re looking for
link here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/5221304
edit: also! i just read it today but "Nearing Spring" by (again) courtingstars is great! it's a nice miracle friendship fic from akashi's perspective featuring lots of ~INTROSPECTION~ about frienship and romance
link here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/4927654#main
one author i will always recommend is Arthuria_Pendragon - i can’t think of any specific akashi-centered fics off the top of my head, but their characterization of the Miracles as family makes me soft every time (i’m a little biased because i’ve been their beta-reader since february, haha). their version of akashi is always pretty awesome, no matter what story it is!
link here: https://archiveofourown.org/users/Arthuria_PenDragon/pseuds/Arthuria_PenDragon
(“Project #7: Kiseki” is really good and angsty. plus it gives each of the Miracles screen time throughout the fic)
“CW-12208861” by fuchsiafantasy is a work i only read very recently and it is discontinued and will never be finished, but it’s this cool au fic (in a non-basketball-related world) where akashi is a realistic-looking ai that akashi shiori made. it's is really interesting, but i don’t want to spoil anything more in case you read it - give it a shot!
link here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/20537282
there’s also the wonderful “Designation: Miracle” series by umisabaku! the first story isn’t Akashi-centric at all, but the later ones are and they’re AWESOME! fair warning, the stories center on the ship Furihata/Akashi and idk what you think of ships (other than lining AkaKuro at least a little, obviously). the concept here is that the miracles are human experiments/weapons that were created by teiko Industries. but that won’t stop them from playing basketball!

overall, not all of these focus on Akashi specifically, but they all write him very well! does anyone else have any recommendations for really good fics about Akashi?
also, i'll add to this post if i find any more awesome fics, either through editing it or reblogging it!

I’m re-reading @courtingstars Storming the Castle and it’s the sleepover at Akashi’s place and I’m screaming at how oblivious these two are.
They are holding hands, having deep as fuck emotionally vulnerable conversations and Furihata leaned his head against Akashi’s shoulder and said “this is where i want to be” and this entire time they’re going “jee golly we’re such best friends aren’t we? haha I’d break the world apart for you and go beyond where I usually go specifically for you, and we’re still the bestest of friends.”
I am screaming into my pillow rn.
Update: They are HOLDING HANDS, in bed and Furi’s hand is over Akashi’s heart and Akashi keeps thinking about how wonderful it is that Furi trusts him so much and had run into his arms. If they say “friend” one more time I’m going to rip the universe apart, go to where they are and make them see this shit for what it truly is(an epic, wonderful romance).
