Langblr Reactivation Challenge by @prepolyglot | 1.2
Write a list of goals you have for your target languages. Make both long term and short term goals. An overall goal could be to have the ability to talk with native speakers with ease and a smaller goal would be to finally learn that difficult grammar point that's been plaguing you for ages. How will you achieve them?
___
日本語
My main goal with Japanese right now is to be able to read/watch/play various Japanese media. A secondary goal is to be able to visit Japan and travel comfortably even in the less touristy spots. I'd especially like to be comfortable ordering food in restaurants since I am vegan and there can often be a lot of cultural differences that can make it hard to explain what I do and don't eat, even without a language barrier. I don't know when I'm going to get a chance to actually go to Japan, though, and if I do it definitely won't be frequently, which is why it isn't as much of a focus for me currently.
A more specific goal would be to read the manga series 下弦の月 by Ai Yazawa. It's one of her works that has never been localized into English, so the only way I'll be able to read it is in Japanese, and that's pretty motivating.
Some more short term goals include finishing all the currently available content on NativShark (a Japanese language learning site) by the end of the year, and watching all the videos on the Comprehensible Japanese YouTube channel. I've completed 85/296 lessons on NativShark so far, and if I keep up my current pace of 5 lessons a day, I should be able to complete that goal. For Comprehensible Japanese I've already completed the Complete Beginner playlist, and I should be able to finish the Beginner playlist by the end of the year as well. I think completing these two things will leave me in a good place to start next year, when I want to start doing more extensive reading and listening of native materials.
Español
I live in Southern California and Spanish is ubiquitous here, and it's a language I've always felt that I should learn so I can connect with more of the people in my community. It's hard to stay motivated about learning a language just because you feel you ought to, though, which is one of the reasons I haven't gotten very far with it. One personal goal I do have in this language though, is to be able to watch Guillermo del Toro's earlier films in their original Spanish.
Hrvatski
This is a very personal language for me, as my grandfather's family is from Croatia. My main goal is to learn about and be more connected to my personal history, and be able to visit with family there who don't speak English. I also recently stumbled upon the site croatian.film, and the idea of watching and reading about Croatian film is exciting. If you've noticed the theme, it's because I'm a bit of a film buff, so watching movies is a pretty good motivator for me.

uhh i didn't post in a long time didn't i
so here's some archaic cyrillic letters i found in wikimedia commons
Tumblr media
this one is Iotified Monograph Uk, that served the same purpose as Юю does nowadays. it was used in romanian cyrillic in 1838-1846 and 1858 (if we're talking about the ligature specifically) or in 1838-1860 if also we count using two letters as one (ІꙊ іꙋ/Іꙋ іꙋ).
btw i think it would have great potential in conlanging. Using Юю as iotified О and this letter as iotified У seems quite logical to me
Tumblr media
(i made this pic myself and i am very proud of it)
This is cyrillic letter Char (not sure if it's the official name tho) that was used in most of Uslar's alphabets for different sounds (e.g. /ʧ’/ in Tabasaran, /ʧ’:/ in Avar and probably /ʧ:/ in Lak). It's derived from the Georgian letter Ch'ari - ჭ, used to represent /ʧ’/.
Quite an unpopular letter, i'd say. It was kinda hard searching information about it, since i couldn't find even some kinda page about it
Tumblr media
And that one is Djerv. The only Slavic letter outta these three, the only one that i found in unicode table and not wikimedia commons and also the only one that's actually in unicode.
It was used on early Serbo-Croatian monuments to represent /dʑ/ and /tɕ/, and was also used in Bosančica (bosnian cyrillic) in digraphs ꙉн and ꙉл (which looked more like ꙉɴ and ꙉʌ) to represent /ɲ/ and /ʎ/ respectively.

czech ona ('ona) - she serbian; croatian; bosnian; polish ona ('ona) - she, it russian она (o'na) - she belarusian яна (yana) - she

Backend engineer who enjoys narratives in various media—books, video games, movies, series.
Structure, organization, and logic are my jam.
My hobbies skew toward learning. Playing ukulele, reading about astronomy, listening to medical history podcasts, teaching myself to read more science and literature in other languages, consuming hard science fiction narratives.

I really hope Duolingo releases a course on that language spoken in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina that is mutually intelligable between all of those regions. It'd be funny to see them squirm trying to figure out how to represent it.
My two cents would be to call it Serbo-Croatian, give it a new flag that mixes those two countries' national flags Austria-Hungary style or use the flag of Yugoslavia to depict it and do it in the more common latin script, or perhaps make it the first bi-script course.
Interested to hear the thoughts or feelings of others though. Beyond the meme of "funny Balkan infighting" I do think it would be really nice to see the language reach a wider audience and I personally would love to learn it if they made a course.

Not bad for a day and a bit of learning! Maybe, just maybe I'll learn this language in a couple years after all. Drops is basic, but they really make learning new vocabulary easy. (They're not good for learning grammar, though -- at least what I've seen -- and Croatian grammar is daunting.)

By relevant I mean that it's widely spoken in my country and worldwide :) I think all these languages are beautiful and interesting which is why I made this poll. My sister speaks basically fluent Arabic and my dad is learning too so that's another plus for Arabic aside from the fact I live in Israel lol. Idk if I wanna learn a language for fun or for practicability and how much I effort I wanna put in

New langblr intro post ☀️
Hello I'm zoe (they/any prns) and I love learning (about) languages! It's purely a hobby for me, I don't plan on studying languages/linguistics or pursuing a carreer in it.
I'm a native German speaker and I learned English, Latin and French in school. I really really love Latin and I must say it had a big influence on how I view, understand and learn other languages. I also took Ancient Greek at university, but sadly forgot most of it.
I'm particularly interested in slavic languages and cultures. Right now I'm learning Russian, and I would love to learn Polish and Croatian one day...
My goal is to practice at least a tiny bit everyday and I want to document my notes and progress on here :)
I hope to find some friends on langblr who are interested in the same languages 🫶🏻
