UNSEEN - Final images (part 1/2)
Cross polarization
This is one of my favorite new techniques. I like the effect, I think it’s really cool.

Macro
I think its a great technique to reveal tiniest details of the objects. I took pictures of the stuff available at the college, so they might not be the most interesting.

Resonant Visions 7
Crosspolar: 51.2763° N, 30.2219° E (2018)
Artwork by O.R
Reviewed format: Digital Album on VAAGNER
Welcome to the 7th review in the Resonant Visions series on this blog and today I've got for you this great album by Crosspolar from 2018, titled 51.2763° N, 30.2219° E. This album was released on the label VAAGNER and I'm reviewing the Digital version here. The artwork of this album is by O.R, though I couldn't find out more info about the artist, unfortunately. I like the dark gray mysterious look of the album cover image which shows a big Industrial complex which seems to be two images layered over eachother creating this fuzzy grainy effect in the image and the lights of the machinery and other buildings of the complex are a bit washed out as well, looking more like snowflakes melting on the camera lens. The blending images creates a kind of dynamic in the album cover in which the active Industry complex seems to be repeating itself, like visible shifts in time are happening. The pipes on the buildings themselves also add intriguing abstract lines within the fuzzy imagery and all in all the image does have quite a surreal quality to it due to the grainy fuzzy look, an inviting cover image. The music on this album indeed does have a similar grainy sound to it as the album cover suggests, although a bit more "positive" in terms of ambience than the gray cover might suggest. What you get in the Digital download version of this album are the album cover artwork in good resolution (1617x1570p ) as well as the 8 album tracks in 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality.
Now let's get into the music on 51.2763° N, 30.2219° E, the music on the 8 tracks of this album all falls into a kind of "degrading" Drone sonic territory and there's a lot of use of high frequency hissy and soft noisy sweeps of sound that accompany the drones and melodies. The music sometimes recalls Boards of Canada in that sense, but this is not mimicry of their sound but rather a good personal sonic landscape that Crosspolar has shaped by using simple warm melodies combined with everfluctuating clouds of hiss that add a "mechanical" vibe to the music (like hearing hissy hydraulic, oil and waterbased industrial machines in action) that directly refer to the image on the album cover. 3 short Intermission tracks are blended in the tracklist, forming short miniatures that sometimes recall earlier melodic material but definitely work well in keeping the flow of the music varied and surprising over the 29 minutes of this album. The album starts with Intermission 1: Parousia, a short interlude piece with a simple fuzzy melody that's accompanied by some gorgeous "bird" like sweeping tones and warm intense bass, a great beginning and the scene is set well, a filtered kind of Ambient which is focussed on expressing "memories", other places and a combination of both quiet tension and peace within its cloudy texture. Then in ...And Then We Heard The Sirens, a warm reverberated bending melody rises up out of the hiss, later being accompanied by a funky pointed synth arpeggio. What is particularly strong about this track is the subtle bends in pitch of the main melody and the excellent bursts of harmonic distortion that add some well controlled edges of roughness to the sonic texture of this piece. The resonances that are audible "between" the tones and texture of the piece are also very intriguing and immersive in this music. Indeed, while the melodies are simple, the performances, sonic manipulation and sound design within the music add very convincing and exciting details and alien but also calming subconcious feelings are conjured up by the hazy degrading sound Crosspolar creates. In Nord Crosspolar moves in a darker direction, with a continuous resonant drone, a brooding deep melody and shifting, hissy machine like extra elements in the sonic texture that sound a bit like you're hearing distant sounds from an industria l facility, the flanging sound making it seems like the wind distorts the sound by changing its phase. Very nice. Intermission 2: Miasma is a saturated and mid frequency focused interlude with a repeating heavily reverberated melody. A bit like you're hearing music playing through megaphone like speakers near a factory, which is well in keeping with the fuzzy sonic signature of this album. Masts, Antennas , Towers then follows which has a particularly nice low resonant drone that sounds like its playing through a big stell pipe that's accompanied by a floating warm melody, the hiss also has a good phased sound to it, matching the rich harmonics of the drones by adding an additional subtle tone to it. Then we have short interlude Intermission 3: Redshift, which is a piece that only has very subtle hints of hints to it. It consists of an even more metallic sounding resonant drone and sharp synth arpeggios that actually have a bit of a Chiptune sound to them. It's definitely a nice contrasting piece to the music that came before with its suprisingly sharp sound. On Stadium "Avanhard" we have a heavily panned resonant tube drone accompanied by minimalist subdued melodies, a deep bass and very active hiss and intentional recording artifacts. Variations of the bird like tones return as well, though with a much more ghostly effect to them. The fuzzy heavy compression also adds to the piece a level of degradation that enhances the textures and gives the subtly progressive piece mechanical aspect more edge as well, with the piece having a good balance between the calm melodic side and the driving machinery like sounds from the drone and hiss in the track. Dreamline r is the final track on this album, featuring a minimalist entrancing melody, this piece mostly works well due to the very subtle shifts and changing in the texture and layering of the tones of the main melody. Dreamliner creates a mellow diffuse glow within its ambience that is a fitting ending to this album, bringing back a peaceful feeling after the sometimes mysterious and tense sonic textures that can be felt listening to 51.2763° N, 30.2219° E.
51.2763° N, 30.2219° E by Crosspolar is a great album of hazy experimental Ambient music in which the richly resonating drones, hazy melodies and hissy "degrading" sound textures and artifacts conjur up sonic pictures of distant distorted memories, an Industrial landscape and intriguing quiet tension which is also well reflected by the excellent cover artwork by O.R. I definitely recommend this album to listeners who are looking for Drone / Ambient music with a strong cinematic touch to it in both its sound design and the compositions as well as listeners who are looking for experimental music that can truly conjur up some intriguing new imagery in the subconcious through the melodies and sonic manipulation on this album . Definitely check this album out.

Sometimes you come across something broken, but still shining with brilliance. Muscovite Mica Crystals. Frayed, but still preserved after being sliced into a sheet about 30 microns thin. So thin that even solid rock becomes a window. I think I want to make a few posters out of these to put on my wall. #muscovite #xpl #petrology #igneous #mineral #rock #phyllosilicate #sheetsilicate #minerals #rock #rocks #geology #microscope #crosspolarized #rainbow #earth #science #geologist (at Fullerton, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuvNlFqFXwz/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1hru6mtvl4yfk

Cross Polarisation
Cross Polarizing
Cross-polarization is an optical effect that can show stress on transparent object like plastic and glass. This technique is sometimes used for seeing stress patterns on scale model of building or bridges. Cross Polarizing can be also used to get rid of surface glare this can be used by product photography to get a clear photo without glare and by dentists to get a better look at someone mouth.
The set up and kit
Camera
Polarizing film
Polarizing filter
Something Plastic
In a studio setting you need to have a polarized film over the light source and a polarized filter on the camera and turn off all other light sources and close any blinds or curtains. Turning the polarized filter on the camera changes how strong the effect is and to see more or less colours
The science
Light is made up of waves that oscillate and are perpendicular to it direction. When the waves are not aligned, they can in move left and right oscillate up and down.
To Polarize the light wave, we want the waves all to oscillate parallel to each other.
The Polarized filter/film is made up of columns that allow light to pass through and other light to be reduce.
In cross polarization we are using the first polarizing filter/film on the light source. Then using a polarize filter on the lens of the camera to polarized light in the opposite direction. Doing this allows very little light from the light source get through onto the camera sensor. But the stresses in the plastic modify the light meaning it is no longer polarized in the same direction as the polarized light source. This creates the colours.
