FOTD #009 : yellow fairy cups! (bisporella citrina)
yellow fairy cups (AKA lemon discos) are fungi in the family helotiaceae. they are found in north africa, asia, europe, australia, new zealand, north america, & central + south america. fruit bodies are typically encountered growing in dense clusters on the surface of rotten wood (especially deciduous trees), particularly beech.
the big question : can i bite it??
nah - they are inedible.
b. citrina description :
"fruit bodies begin as spherical, closed globules, before expanding. the smooth, bright yellow fruit bodies are small—typically less than 3 mm (1⁄8 in) in diameter & up to 1 mm (1⁄32 in) high—& shallowly cup- or disc-shaped. the inner surface is smooth, & bright yellow, while the outer surface is a paler yellow. in mass, the spore color is white. the stalk is broad, pale yellow in color, & short to nearly absent; when present it is rarely more than 1 mm. the fruit bodies may be so numerous that their shapes are distorted by overcrowding. fruit bodies that have dried are wrinkled & have a dull orangish-brown color."

The process of sorting stickers for my 20 pack of Vintage Mushroom Illustration Stickers. Every sticker is hand-cut by me and then sorted to make sure each pack has the right amount of diversity of mushroom species. Every single pack has two different Amanita muscaria stickers, Amanita jacksonii, and Cortinarius sanguineus. Each pack varies slightly but has a sampling of different types of mushrooms (Boletes, Morels, Cup Fungi, Coral Fungi Earth Stars, etc.) The sticker pack is currently available in my online shop!

Scarlet Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha coccinea) and Ruby Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha austriaca) (indistinguishable without microscopy) are one of the few Spring mushrooms that are also edible. They have a mild taste (when overcooked, can become flavourless). They can be gently pan-fried in a little oil/ butter or used in a stew, and they make a nice addition to pasta and rice dishes, or fried eggs.
If you're out looking for them, Elf Cups enjoy wet, muddy places (often close to a stream), and they grow on fallen twigs, rotting wood, under dead leaves but can be easily spotted because of their bright red color.
