curly hair 101

hii :))

since "curls" is literally in my username, its only natural that I post about something for the curly girls :D

so why not start with a beginner's guide to curly hair :)

soo first of all i think its helpful if you get a gist of what hair type you have, e.g 2c, 3b, 4b etc...

its not mandatory and doesn't really mean anything but like it definitely aids when you're looking for haircair & inspo with hairstyles and haircuts and all that jazz 🤗 [ <- jazz hands :) ]

here's a chart to help you

obviously do some of your own research if you're unsure- this isn't very in-depth and doesn't use irl examples

also keep in mind that you can have multiple, and a wide range of types on one head LOLL like mine ranges from 2C -> 3C 🫣

(PS: this guide will be tailored to type 2 -> 3 hair just because that's what I have experience with and don't want to potentially ruin anyone's type 4 hair 😭 but if aspects of this apply then feel free to apply them 😇)

wash day routine + products

alrighty so i see some overcomplication/people being scared of curly hair washing- like looking at porosity and whatnot but IMO its really not that difficult

the only thing you really need to worry about for the washing aspect is getting moisturising (curly recommended) shampoo & conditioner, just cause if you don't it could dry out your hair and have a pretty dodgy finished product 😬 (I use Umberto Giannini for this)

washing is pretty standard:

wet your hair thoroughly, so that no part is dry

shampoo round 1, make sure to scrub thoroughly to get rid of any dirt and grime 🙈

rinse

shampoo round 2, this should turn your hair into its own bubble bath 🫧

rinse

condition, rake through your hair and make sure it is everywhere

let sit for a little bit, ~2 mins maybe

rinse

and thats it :))

don't use a regular towel, use a microfiber towel if you're using one at all so that all the moisture isn't drained from your hair before the rest of the products

now for the curly hair routine:

start with leave-in conditioner and run it through the entirety of your hair - I use Garnier leave-in, like the big tub

then run some curl cream through your hair and scrunch it in, make sure there is an even application throughout all the hair - I use the Shea Moisture curl cream

~ this next bit is optional because its a gel cast + styling but honestly id totally recommend going the extra mile for it cause it holds your curls for longer and makes ur hair softer ~

apply curly gel to your hair and scrunch it in, I use Aussie curl gel

for styling, I take the middle -> top sections of my hair, take some extra gel and finger coil the curls

let your hair air dry or diffuse

once completely dry, take some hair oil and scrunch it through your hair and separate any coils, I use argan oil

then you're done :))

regular hair care

there isnt really much to say here tbh

only that

if you need to refresh your curls, you should be able to do it just by finger-coiling with water

DON'T brush your hair while dry, it causes breakage

if you sweat, your hair will most likely get frizzy

to tie your hair use a scrunchie

sleeping with a bonnet helps reduce frizz but icl I don't 🫣

hair styles + cuts

okay let me preface this section by saying PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEEEE do some research about curly stylists in your area, I promise it will be worth it because curly hair cutting requires special training (despite the fact we've probably all cut our hair ourselves at some point 🙈)

now here are some things I usually ask for in a haircut:

a trim off the edges to keep my hair healthy (I have hair down past my shoulders)

2 or 3 layers to keep volume around my head so it doesn't look like a flat landslide...

some long bangs at the front to frame my face

obviously thats just me so do some extra research and see what you'd like

not much, but here are some hairstyles i usually do for everyday wear:

hair down (obviously 🤗)

high ponytail/bun with a few curls at the front

half up half down with a few curls at the front

thats basically all the basics 🙃

i know its hard to start on a curly hair journey especially if you don't know what you're doing, so if you are (or aren't) i hope this was able to help you in some shape or form 🫶🤗

Do you have any advice for naturally curly hair?? I’m so confused and I have been my whole life so I’ve been keeping it straight for years now BUT IDK ANYMORE😭

alright, cracks knuckles. what your hair needs depends on a lot of different factors but i’ll tell you my routine, which has been perfected and never fails to get me compliments.

this is pretty lengthy, so i apologize. but when it comes to curly hair, there is no such thing as too much detail.

for the record, if you need further tips on things like hairstyles or products, i heavily recommend black girl youtube. i relied on that a lot growing up and still do sometimes.

here are my qualifications:

i’ve never used any chemical treatments on my hair ever. this is my 100% natural texture and color, it has literally always looked like this.

let us begin.

i wash my hair three times a week. usually it’s monday / wednesday / friday. if i wash it any more than that, it dries my hair and scalp out.

every product i’m about to tell you is from the brand Not Your Mothers (unless i say otherwise).

i use the curl talk shampoo (focusing on my scalp). once i rinse that out, while i’m in the shower, i fully detangle my hair. then i use my fingers to rake the curl talk bond building conditioner through my hair. i usually let that sit for maybe 5 minutes. RINSE WITH COLD WATER. this will reduce frizz! i also take my fingers through my hair again while rinsing just to make sure i get it allllllll out.

once a week i use the kirsten ess clarifying shampoo before the curl shampoo just to get rid of product buildup.

after shower: i, again, detangle my hair. this may not be necessary for you but my hair is really really thick and tangles really quickly, which impacts my definition. i also prioritize definition in my routine because i have so much hair that i don’t need to prioritize volume.

i put my hair in two sections just down the middle of my head. i rake the curl talk cream through both separate sections (little goes a long way), then rake just a tiny amount through the whole head so there’s no more sectioning. next, i use the curl talk mousse and focus that on the mids to ends of my hair. personally, i rake it through for the definition, but if you want volume then you should scrunch it. LAST, i flip my whole head over and scrunch my hair upwards with the curl talk gel (little goes a long way).

i’m not a diffuser girly, so i just let my hair air dry for about an hour and a half to two hours. then i use a moroccan oil treatment (any brand works tbh) to scrunch out any cast so that my hair is really soft and fluffy.

when it’s NOT wash day: i literally just wet my hair down with a spray bottle, detangle it with a brush, then do the exact routine above. but if it looks pretty good as is, then i just fluff it with oil and call it a day. or i put it in an octopus claw clip.

for sleeping i highly recommend either a satin bonnet or pillowcase! i also love satin scrunchies. during the day i keep a tiny bottle of the oil in my purse so if my hair starts to frizz from weather, i can just fix it real quick.

THIS IS SO LONG IM SO SORRY BUT MY ROUTINE IS SO DOWN PAT. i’ve done this exact routine for yearssss now and she has never failed me ever ever ever.

Summary: Zayne reaction to your curly hair.

Once you start dating, Zayne is baffled at how you're able to do anything with your hair at all.

With 1a hair the man has never had to do much with his hair at all. All he had to do was brush it and he was good to go. At most he would put a bit of gel in it on special occasions but otherwise it was all the same. Nothing in comparison to you.

In high school, Zayne would hear about your struggles. How your hair didn't want to 'behave' or that you were running late cause there was a large knot or how you didn't have time to shower so now it was being held prisoner in your claw clip or ponytail.

It's not that he thought you were being dramatic, he just didn't understand when you would say things like. "Ugh I hate having curly hair." along with "My arms hurt all the time." and the on occasion. "I had to get a new brush, the old one sucks/broke."

Zayne loved your hair; it was soft and framed your face perfectly. The many times he would reach out and touch it, playing with them. Pulling on the ends and watching them spring back up in their shape.

But see is believing or at least in this case sleeping over was eye opening experience.

Not only did you shower and brush your hair, but you also used something called "curl cream"? The man was very confused as you ran the white paste through your thick curls, pulling on the strands before wrapping it around your finger, letting it fall as a perfect defined curl.

Zayne couldn't help but stare as you performed this magical ritual. Amazed to learn that this was how you did your hair.

Amused when you defused your hair and confused when you put it up in a bonnet. Following you around like a cat around your apartment.

"Can I help you sir?" You confront him, catching him off guard. A playful jest as you questioned him.

"I was unaware of your process, I was curious." He mused looking you over. "This is what you do every night?"

You stared back at him, your brow arching upwards a humourism smile playing on your lips.

"No, just on wash days."

"Wash days?" He pondered aloud, the concept escaping him.

"Oh honey!" You called out lovingly, turning to him fully and giving him a pat on the cheek.

"You're so cute, I'll explain this all to you later. Come on. Let's go to bed now hon."

Was watching a streamer play through Dangan and he saw the hairspray bottles on Mondo’s desk and thought it was skin care, he was like ooooh mondo does skincare!!!??? and I laughed so hard but now I’ve fully incorporated into my belief system. Mondo’s 10 step skin care routine. I love him

mondo having a skin care routine is so canon to me. i don’t care what anyone says. that man has good hygiene. he does all that to his hair and puts on makeup regularly. he has to have a good skin care routine to make sure that shit’s consistent and healthy.

i always love the idea of mondo having such carefully crafted morning and night routines when it comes to getting his appearance together at the beginning of the day and taking it all off before bed. always looking his best is part of what he deems as strength. so he always put so much time into making sure it looks exactly like how he wants it. that man is waking up at the ass crack of dawn to do his hair and makeup. he puts time aside at the end of the day to do his skin care routine without rushing it.

he enjoys it so much but convinces himself it’s just so he can keep up appearances. let him explore the beautiful world of hair, skin, and makeup more. he’d have a blast.
