SURGICAL SELF EXORCISM
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so I was reading a text (as I usually am) on don quixote (thanks to re4make) and came across this one, and immediately started connecting thematic dots like there's no tomorrow
Tumblr media
the wound fingering is because it's fun and sexy, and the adjacent catholicism of both settings makes this kind of imagery free real-estate to go wild with

And no shamura did NOT have a great time birthing three kids but at least they all came out silly (though they were worried about asmaa taking a little over four weeks to hatch ,, seeing as Mozna hatched open faster than Majnoon)

oh nuts. a life experience has given me a new layer of perspective on Cas's homosexual declaration of love to Dean.
recently I had occasion to tell a person I had feelings for them knowing full well they didn't feel even a twinge of the same thing for me. while the whole thing was a decidedly unpleasant experience, I kept laughing at myself internally bc I didn't want to say "the happiness is just in saying it" like fucking Castiel over here. (we don't need to talk about it, it's fine.) (I am happier having said it and it's kind of bullshit, but I digress.)
because the thing is, the happiness isn't in just saying it, right? the happiness is in the having. I made a whole TikTok "proving" that the Empty didn't come for Cas when he confessed his love, but rather when he realized Dean loved him back. even for Cas, the happiness was in the having, not in the saying, however brief it was.
and I've always been one of those people who rolled their eyes at the whole concept. why would the happiness be in just being, in just saying it, if it's right there in front of you to have. and then it hit me like a tonne of bricks (as I was washing my kitchen counters).
Cas really didn't think he could have Dean.
at all. in any capacity. he really, truly, and honestly felt to the depths of himself that Dean did not have any twinge of similar feelings, that this really was a Hail Mary shot-in-the-dark. and I think me, personally, really didn't understand that about Cas. that his belief in his love being unrequited was that unshakable.
something else I've been pondering is how audiences have so much more empathy for fictional characters who share traits that IRL they find objectionable and unappealing. but the thing is about fictional characters is that we follow them around in their most private, vulnerable moments. we see Dean mourning Cas when he dies, literally killing himself because he can't live without him, but it's so easy to forget that we're the omniscient ones here.
Cas never knew.
Dean's whole thing was pushing him away, keeping him at arm's length, making it seem like whatever heroic thing he does for Cas he'd do for anyone. he downplays how important it is for Dean to share the Deancave with him, to show him his favourite movies, share his favourite songs. he acts like the things Cas does for him don't mean that much to hide how much they do mean. he uses "we" whenever he even gets in the vicinity of expressing a feeling. "We were worried." "We're glad you're back." "We needed a win." "You're our brother." The audience knew the difference. We saw how he'd clench his jaw or swallow hard or make a face that said "God, I'm being such an idiot". Because we saw him in those little moments. We got to see the cracks in the mask.
but Cas never knew.
the self-hating angel of Thursday was never going to think it was all a way for Dean to protect himself. obviously, that's the delicious tragedy of it all, but what I think I realized at the end of all that is Cas confessing his love to a Dean who didn't love him back wouldn't have worked. Because the happiness really is in the having. If happiness was just in saying it, then The Empty would have come before Cas even finished getting the words out of his mouth.
so Cas's plan wouldn't have worked if Dean didn't love him back.
this is just me yapping on about my own nonsense, but I do think it's really interesting. there's contentment in "just saying it". there's freedom and relief and an unburdening. I think one can argue that it makes being happy in the being easier. there is certainly some joy in telling a person you think that highly of them. but true happiness?
nah.
true happiness is always going to only be in the having. Cas didn't understand the difference until he experienced it, and by then, it was too late.

Unexpected Bypass
There was a tie in the writing ideas poll.
...Which means I'm at liberty to pick one.
That's it, Nott ( @purgemarchlockdown )! Amane is going to pay for your crimes.
-
Amane attacks Es, but they have an old (unwanted) ally on their side.
Cw: blood and injury, violence against a minor, restraints, cult and child abuse references Additional disclaimers: At its heart, the premise is simply "what if Amane attacked Es", but I'm aware that this feeds into the DID/CDD theory.
Amane gets treated about as roughly as my other works, but something about this feels more intense nonetheless.
If you're uncomfortable with any of the above, you might want to skip this.
Thanks to @galactic-chaos9, @gunsli-01, and @good-beans for beta reading.
-
"This is unforgivable! I won't forgive you!" Amane screamed and charged at Es.
They turned towards her in shock, and a dull blade connected with their hat and grazed their forehead. As they looked at Amane in disbelief and slowly moved their hand to the wound, she jabbed the scissors at them again. But before she could land the second strike, she was sent flying backwards. She crashed into the wall and yelped before crumpling to the ground, the scissors clattering out of her reach. Kotoko now stood in her place, dusting off her hand.
"Kotoko!" Es yelled as they wiped the blood off their forehead. She ignored them and stalked towards Amane. "Hey, Kotoko, listen-"
"Momose Amane, what an unexpected troublemaker," Kotoko muttered, prodding her with a steel-toed boot. Amane winced.
"Kotoko, what the hell?" Es called out as they ran to her.
"Is there a problem, Warden-"
"Get out of here!" They grabbed Kotoko by the arm and tugged her away from Amane. She stumbled a bit but steadied herself.
"Let go," she commanded. She tried to elbow Es, but her arm froze up just before the blow could connect. "Huh. So that rule is still in place. I wonder why she was able to bypass-"
Es hooked their heel around Kotoko's leg, trying to trip her, but she only wobbled. They stumbled and latched onto her arm again so as not to fall. "Do not talk about her like that. Step away from her."
Kotoko stepped back as Es got out of her way. "That's odd of you to defend someone who just attacked you. Even more so to attack your defender."
"It isn't your place to guard me or carry out judgment on anyone."
Kotoko quirked her brows and put her hands on her hips. "Warden-san, you're not going to thank someone who saved your life twice?"
"I never f-" Es slammed their glove onto the cut to try to distract from the sting. "-asked you to help me. I never asked you to attack any of the pris-"
"She could have killed you, especially since she got past the barrier."
"I could have fought her off just fine."
"That nasty head wound says otherwise."
Es wiped the wound again. So much blood was spilling around their eye. "It's just a graze. It hardly hurts. I'll just go visit Shidou after the video extraction."
Kotoko sighed. "Warden-san, you've let your guard down. You can't go easy on the prisoners, especially not this one. You might end up dead if this keeps happening."
"And you should mind your own business. The prisoners' judgments are not for you to decide. Now get out."
"Shutting me down at every turn? Isn't our history one that is built on dialogue?"
Had she been eavesdropping on this interrogation since the very beginning?
"Kotoko, get the hell out of this room!"
Kotoko shook her head. "At least let me help you finish your interrogation."
"I can get things in order on my own."
Finally, that annoying, stubborn, self-righteous vigilante intruder left the room.
Es sighed and picked up Amane by the shoulders of her uniform, dragging her back to her seat. She was too dazed to struggle, but when blood from Es's wound dripped onto her face, she grinned.
"Heh, serves you right… Be glad you got off with a light punishment…"
Es tried to ignore her aimless mutterings.
"God stands by us. We will not be so merciful next-"
"Shut up!" Es yelled, throwing Amane on the chair with more force than they intended.
Amane yelped. "Resorting to… one-sided violence… again?"
Es huffed and grabbed the edges of her sleeves, crossing her arms in front. "You started it. I would hardly call that one-sided."
Amane kicked the chair leg with her heel, trying to regain movement bit by bit. "You are taking this… too far… This is not fair!"
"Not fair? Oh, do you want to be treated like a child after all? A bit too late for that, Prisoner No. 8." Es threaded the sleeves through the back of the chair and buckled them before Amane could gather enough strength to tip herself out of it. "Isn't this the head-on fight with Milgram that you wanted?"
"'Head-on fight'? You are one to talk." Amane caught just enough air to keep talking. "Every time you have had enough of me, you just tie me down and shove me out of the way. Coward."
"Shut it." Es began to walk back to their seat as the bell chimed. "Good grief, you wasted all of the interrogation time."
Amane did not deign to respond.
Es wiped their face again and found their gloves soaked. They grabbed a handkerchief from their pocket and pressed it to their wound, and Amane glared at them.
"Running away from your trials, are you?" What was she going on about? "Did Kirisaki Shidou teach you how to-"
"That's enough, Prisoner No. 8!" They stood up and slammed their hands on the table.
"Oh, are you going to hit me? I will be sure to let the entire prison know how this interrogation went."
"And I'll make sure they know you attacked me first."
"I am not the one who is known for attacking others unprovoked. And Yuzuriha Kotoko is not one to spill."
Es brought the handkerchief back to their forehead again as they groaned exasperatedly. "Prisoner No. 8… Amane… Sing your sins!"
