Lucy Eleanora Kippen is a Bully

“God, don’t we have to deal with that girls’ basketball team starting today?” Lucy asked, voice muffled by the bobby pins held between her teeth.

“Ugh, you’re right,” Amber huffed, rolling her eyes as she pinned her hair. “It’ll be fun to watch them fall during center, though.”

“I personally can’t wait for petit allegro with them.” Lucy shoved another pin into her hair. “Ready? Madame Pullman can and will kill if we’re late of the girls’ first day.”

“Yeah, I suppose this is as flat as it’ll go,” Amber said, frowning as she examined her hair.

“Turn around.” Lucy took the pins from Amber, carefully flattening her hair against her head and spraying them both with hairspray.

“Pullman lets us wear warmups for barre, right?” Amber asked, grabbing her bag and water bottle.

“Yep!” Lucy pulled on her shrug to emphasize her point, fixing the way her ballet skirt sat on her hips. “Shall we?”

“We shall.” They left their room together, jogging out of the dorms and across campus. Lucy held the door open for Amber, dropping it when she saw one of the basketball players rushing toward the building. It slammed with a resounding thunk. Amber and Lucy snickered as they turned left toward studio 107.

They dropped their bags on the floor of the studio, pulling on canvas flats and taking their rightful places at the front of the barre. They stretched and vaguely worked their way through several tendu exercises as students trickled into the classroom, including about 5 of the basketball players from Grant. The girl Lucy had dropped the door for made her way into the room as the Kippens watched her in the mirror. Madame Pullman entered the room at precisely 9:00 am, clapping to get the room’s attention.

“No warmups at the barre today, girls,” she said. “No grumbling, either. You came to the School of American Ballet to work, not to wallow in your comfortable clothing. I want you in flats and skirts. Now, please.”

The ballerinas all sighed, tossing their shrugs, leg warmers, and shorts toward their bags and swapping them for ballet skirts. The basketball team followed their lead before joining them at the barre, looking around nervously.

“Now, as I’m sure you all remember, we have the Grant High basketball team with us for the next month. I trust you’ll all be very courteous to them and set good examples as they study the art of ballet with us. Ladies, take your spots at the barre, please.”

The class lined up at the barres, awaiting further instruction.

“Alright, simple beginning. Two tendus devant, seconde, and derriere, then seconde again. Demi demi grande plies from first, second, and fifth. Long hold in fifth relevé, turn, hold on the other side. Then repeat the combo on the left. Good?” The ballerinas all nodded as the basketball players simply looked on in confusion. Madame Pullman signaled to the piano player, who began a soft melody.

“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Hit the downbeats, ladies. Faster, ladies! The company does not want to sign ballerinas with no sense of rhythm. And my basketball players- you have to be agile and flexible to be a good player.”

“God, why are we even here?” a Grant student grumbled. Madame Pullman raised her eyebrow, signaling the piano player to stop.

“Why are you here, you ask? Lucy Kippen, would you care to demonstrate why we are here today?” Madame Pullman asked.

“Of course.”

“Barres to the sides, please, ladies. We will have a center class today. Lucy, your pointe shoes.”

“What variation would you like, Madame?” Lucy asked, sitting to pull on her shoes She pulled her tights off her feet, wincing at the blisters and blood she found.

“Notice, ladies, that Ms. Kippen’s feet are bloodied, blistered, and bruised. There is a reason she is top ballerina here at SAB, and her feet tell the story. And Lucy? Queen of the Dryads.”

“Of course,” Lucy said, lacing her shoes. She pulled on a practice tutu and took her place in the corner of the room.

“Watch closely, basketball players. And ballerinas, put on your pointe shoes,” Madame Pullman said, sliding a CD into the stereo at the corner of the room and pressing play. Lucy plastered on a smile, though not before staring down the apathetic basketball players.

“Watch the amount of strength and grace with which she attacks the steps. Technically, artistically, and emotionally perfect. We are here to study strength, discipline, and perseverance. This is not a game of win or lose, as you may be used to. Ballet, ladies, is a game only comprised of winning. You must win, or you are not truly a ballerina. In basketball, there is always the promise of another game. If you lose, you will always be able to come back. You are here today to understand how it feels to never have another chance.

“Students, please join Lucy as she performs the Kitri Act III variation.” Madame Pullman switched the song, standing back and watching the ballerinas scurry to pull on their tutus and rush to the center. “Basketball players. These girls have one chance to get into the company of their dreams. One sickled foot, one rolled ankle, one too low arabesque, one imperfect step, and everything comes crashing down over them. Only two girls in this entire year should expect contracts with the company. If we’re lucky, one girl will someday become principal dancer. Statistically, it is impossible to make it as a ballerina. And yet here we are. Grant students, follow my students’ lead.”

The basketball players all moved into lines behind the ballerinas. They slowly began to follow, clumsily mimicking the way they danced.

“Ms. Driscoll, does that look like a clean line to you?” Madame Pullman asked, adjusting Buffy’s leg. “Support your standing leg more, dear. You look like you’re going to fall into Ms. Jackson at any second. Find your centers, girls! I do not want dominoes of dancers!”

Lucy gracefully finished the variation, looking to Madame Pullman for further instruction.

“Piques across the floor, please. Groups of three.” Lucy nodded, grabbing Amber and pushing in front of everyone else to be the first pair.

“Madame, can we be a pair of two?” Amber asked.

“Of course. Everyone else, I expect groups of three. Amber and Lucy, go ahead.”

“Why do they get to be a pair?” Buffy asked, turning to the ballerina she was in a group with.

“They’re the two who are bound for the company. Madame Pullman doesn’t put them with others unless she has to; she wants them to focus on ballet only,” the girl responded, sticking her hand out to shake Buffy’s. “I’m Iris.”

“Buffy… Would you by any chance be Iris McNamara?”

“Yeah?”

“Cyrus Goodman is my best friend. He’s told Andi and I about you.”

“Ah. Yeah, he’s told me about you two.”

“Hang on, if everyone knows Amber and Lucy are going to be signed, why are you guys still here?”

“Because we’re ballerinas. And we love what we do. And we paid a lot to be here. And we’re praying for an injury.”

“Wait- you want each other to get hurt?”

“...Kind of? We want everyone else to drop out of the running. Injured, quitting, running out of money, or just getting worse over time.”

“Ms. McNamara, Ms. Driscoll. No side conversations.”

“Yes, Madame Pullman,” Iris said, starting across the floor. They quickly finished the turning sequence, Buffy bumping into Lucy when the latter stopped quickly.

“Watch it, Driscoll,” Lucy snapped, glaring at them.

“Are they always like this?” Buffy asked.

“Oh, yeah. All three.”

“Three?”

“Yeah, they’re triplets. TJ just isn’t in a girls’ class, for obvious reasons.”

“And they’re all like that?”

“Oh, yeah. They’re complete bullies. I’d step around them while you’re here. The rest of us do, anyway.”

“Are they- are they mean to Cyrus?” Buffy asked quietly.

“They’re mean to everyone who isn’t bound for the company. And considering the fact that they’re the only ones who are pretty much guaranteed to get a contract, yeah. I wouldn’t worry about it, Cyrus is a good dancer. He’s got thick skin.”

“Alright ladies, good job. To the center for petit allegro. You know the combination. Grant students, follow along. We’ll do it four times on each side.”

“Four?” someone asked.

“Would you like it to be five? Get to it, ladies.” The piano player started a jaunty, challenging piece. “I want to see strong glissades, and even stronger pas de chats!”

Class lasted an hour after that; the girls were all drenched in sweat by the time they were dismissed.

“C’mon, we should get cleaned up and changed. It’s… noon. Half an hour until variations,” Lucy said, pulling Amber out of the room and rushing to the locker rooms. They both switched into white leotards and skirts, re-spraying their hair and rushing back out of the locker room.

“Hey!” TJ called from behind them.

“Teej!” Amber said, grinning at him. “How was weight training?”

“Boring, easy. The Goodman kid dropped one of his weights once, though. It was hilarious. I have technique now with Foreman. You?”

“We’ve got variations with Petrov. And the Grant High team - they’re awful, Jesus,” Amber said.

“It’s so ridiculous that we have to deal with them,” Lucy said, purposefully getting louder as they passed Buffy and the team. “Some of us actually deserve corrections. Why are they training with Advanced D? They’d probably do better with Girls Prep.”

“Honestly,” Amber agreed, shoving past Buffy with her shoulder. “Aren’t they only here because they keep losing?”

“See you later,” TJ said, nodding toward his room as Amber and Buffy started up the stairs. “Good luck with the losing team!”

“Lunch at 2:30?” Amber asked.

“Yep!” TJ called, sliding into his class with a sigh.

“Ready to watch the team absolutely butcher Kitri?” Lucy asked, grinning at Amber.

“Only if you’re ready to watch them fall out of every single they attempt,” Amber joked, looking pointedly over her shoulder at Buffy as she came up the stairs behind them

“Oh, definitely.”

Lucy winked at Amber, dropping the pair of pointe shoes in her hand and watching out of the corner of her eye as they tumbled down the stairs and smashed into Buffy’s toes. She turned around, letting Buffy hand her the pair.

“Oh, sorry,” she said, sarcasm dripping from her voice. “My mistake.”

Gli Arcadi di Terra d'Otranto (5/x): Tommaso Maria Ferrari (1647-1716) di Casalnuovo

Va detto preliminarmente che dal punto di vista toponomastico l’attuale Manduria costituisce un caso curioso. Essa è Manduria in Tito Livio1 (I secolo a. C.-I secolo d. C.) e in Plinio2 (I secolo d. C.), Manduris nella Tabula Peutingeriana3, Μανδύριον (leggi Mandiùrion) in Stefano Bizantino4 (V-VI secolo d. C.), ancora Manduris nell’Anonimo Ravennate5 (VII secolo d. C.) e Amandrinum in Guidone6 (XII secolo d. C.). Distrutta dai Saraceni, fu rifondata nell’XI secolo con il nome di Casalnuovo. Tale nome conservò fino al 1789, quando con decreto di Ferdinando I di Borbone riassunse l’antico nome. Ecco perché nei cataloghi degli Arcadi si legge di Casalnuovo.

Il nome pastorale del Ferrari, che era entrato in Arcadia il 20 aprile 16927, era Filarete Nuntino.  Filarete è voce composta dal greco φἱλος (leggi filos)=amico e da ἀρετἡ (leggi aretè)=valore. Per quanto riguarda Nuntino, invece, ha tutta l’aria di essere una forma aggettivale, ma non riesco ad individuare la voce primitiva.

Il Ferrari era figlio di Francesco Antonio e di Vittoria Bruni, sorella del celebre Antonio8 . Per la biografia rinvio a Notizie storiche degli Arcadi morti, De’ Rossi, Roma, tomo I, pp. 59-62 (in cui si indica il 1692 come data del suo ingresso nell’Arcadia) e al testo del Concina che più avanti citerò.

A lui Domenico  De Angelis (nome pastorale Arato Alalcomenio) dedicò la Vita di Antonio Caraccio di Nardò detto Lacone Cromizio in Le vite degli Arcadi illustri, Antonio de’ Rossi,Roma, 1708, parte I, pp. 141-168. Per rendersi conto del suo prestigio è sufficiente dare una rapida scorsa ad un testo che è una sorta di relazione sui suoi funerali, del quale riproduco di seguito il frontespizio.

Non potevo da questo volume non riprodurre, traducendoli, alcuni documenti in latino.

(Iscrizioni elaborate dai padri dell’ordine dei Predicatori ad ornamento dell’apparato funebre. Davanti alla facciata del tempio. Per il fratello Tommaso Maria Ferrari, illustrissimo cardinale di Santa Romana Chiesa, maestro sapientissimo dell’ordine dei Predicatori, ascritto alla famiglia di questo sacro convento, vengono allestiti in questo tempio i trofei, non i funerali. Non parole di lutto, ma di plauso. Chiunque sia tu che entri, risparmia le lacrime, abbandonati all’ossequio: certamente la dottrina e la pietà immortale di un grande eroe a fatica devono essere celebrate dal pianto, a fatica possono essere eguagliate dalle lodi)

  (II Al fratello Tommaso Maria Ferrari, uomo ugualmente illustrissimo e sapientissimo, nato a Manduria nella Iapigia, per aver onorato l’ordine dei Predicatori e il Collegio Apostolico con somma virtù e mirabile dottrina, per aver unito felicemente lo splendore insigne della dignità con l’umiltà insigne dell’animo, la città di Napoli, l’ordine dei Predicatori, la chiesa dedicata al divino spirito, onorata dai meriti e dalle virtù di tanto grande uomo, celebrano il rito funebre con animo grato, com’è giusto)

Essa che ancora  con impeto eccessivamente frettoloso con un sol colpo ha sottratto l’eminentissimo fratello Tommaso Maria Ferrari, ha privato la città del dottore, la religione del decoro, le terre della luce. Ma state lontano, gemiti, lontano lamenti funebri: la morte non ha rapito queste dignità che non con un solo titolo l’eternità da tempo ha rivendicato a sé)

Del Ferrari non resta alcuna pubblicazione, ad eccezione di Testamento fatto dalla chiara memoria dell’eccellentissimo, e reverendissimo signor cardinale frà Tommaso Maria Ferrari del titolo di S. Clemente dell’Ordine de’ Predicatori, consegnato, et aperto per gl’atti del sig. Francesco Antonio Paolini notaro capitolino nel dì 20 Agosto 1716., in cui rese l’anima à Dio, Conti, Roma, 1716.

Un catalogo delle opere manoscritte, tutte di argomento teologico, è in Daniele Concina, De vita ac rebus gestis P. Thomae Mariae Ferrarii Ord. Praed S. R. E. Cardinalis tit. S. Clementis libri tres, Eredi di Giovanni Lorenzo Barbiellini, Roma, 1755, pp. 107-109.

La sua firma è in calce ad una lettera del 18 dicembre 1700 (nell’immagine che segue tratta da http://www.internetculturale.it/jmms/iccuviewer/iccu.jsp?id=oai%3Awww.internetculturale.sbn.it%2FTeca%3A20%3ANT0000%3AIT-PI112_MG.91.44-45&mode=all&teca=MagTeca+-+ICCU) diretta a Guido Grandi da Cremona, camaldolese, accademico della Crusca e lettore di matematica nell’Università di Pisa, socio della colonia camaldolese dell’Arcadia col nome pastorale di Dubeno Erimanzio.

Per rendermi V(ostra) P(ersona) più grata la notizia, che mi porta d’esser giunta in cotesta Città ad esercitarsi nella lettura destinatale da S(ua) A(ltezza)9 ha voluto accompagnarla con parzialissimi annunzii di bene p(e)le vicine s(an)te feste. Io resto molto tenuto alla P(ersona) V(ostra) che coll’unione di q(uan)ti uffici m’habbia confermato la sua bontà, il suo affetto; e mi allegro insieme vivam(en)te seco del campo, che se l’apre di palesare la propria virtù in un luogo reso celebre dal valore di tanti soggetti. Dell’elezzione poi di V(ostra) S(ignoria) hà essa motivo ben giusto di godere quanto fà; già che l’ottime parti, che sempre più s’ammirano nella s(an)ta sua ripromettono alla chiesa, ed al mondo ogni mag(gio)re bene.   Del Ferrari non ho reperito scritto alcuno inserito in qualche raccolta10, mentre, per quanto riguarda la documentazione iconografica, riproduco di seguito ben cinque suoi ritratti. Il primo è una stampa custodita nel British Museum a Londra (https://www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details/collection_image_gallery.aspx?assetId=1613192980&objectId=3733761&partId=1).

In alto a sinistra lo stemma del papa Innocenzo XII, in alto a destra quello del Ferrari (vedi sopra l’ultima iscrizione tratta dal volume celebrativo dei funerali).  Al centro Presb(iter) (Presbitero; il Ferrari fu cardinale presbitero col titolo di S. Clemente). Nella didascalia si legge: Fr(ater) Thomas Maria Ferrari Ordin(is) Predicatorum, Sac(ri) Palatij Apost(olici) Magister. Manduriensis. Creatus S(anctae) R(omanae) E(cclesiae) Cardinalis die 12 Decembris 1695 (Fratello Tommaso Maria Ferrari dell’ordine dei Predicatori, maestro del Sacro Palazzo Apostolico. Di Manduria. Creato cardinale di Sacra Romana Chiesa il giorno12 dicembre 1695).

Nel margine inferiore, fuori campo, il nome dell’editore: Io(hannes) Iacobus de Rubeis Formis Romae ad Templum Pacis cum Privilegio S(ummi) P(ontificis)  (per i tipi di Giovanni Iacopo de Rossi a Roma presso il Tempio della Pace con privilegio del Sommo Pontefice). Mancano, dunque, i nomi del disegnatore/pittore e dell’incisore.

Meno anonimo è, invece, il ritratto presente in un volume (di seguito il frontespizio) dal titolo Effigies nomina et cognomina SD.N. Innocentii P.P. XI. et RR. DD. S.R.E. Cardd. nunc viventium custodito nella Biblioteca centrale di Lovanio (http://depot.lias.be/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE4793452).

In basso a sinistra: Cyrus Ferrus del(ineavit) (Ciro Ferro/Ferri lo disegnò); al centro: Aedit(um) a Io(hanne) Iacobo de Rubeis Romae ad Templum Pacis cum privil(egio) S(ummi) pont(ificis) (Pubblicato da Giovanni Iacopo de Rossi a Roma presso il Tempio della Pace con privilegio del Sommo Pontefice); a destra g(érard) Audran sculp(sit) Ro(mae) (Gérard Audran l’ha inciso).

L’editore, dunque, è lo stesso del ritratto precedente, cioé Giovanni Iacopo de Rossi (1627-1691); in più conosciamo il nome del disegnatore (Ciro Ferri, 1634-1689) e quello dell’incisore (Gérard Audran, 1640-1703).

Il volume  è datato nella relativa scheda al 1676. Credo che si tratti di un errore, giacché l’opera si presenta come una raccolta di ritratti, il primo dei quali è quello di Innocenzo XII (papa dal 1691), il secondo di Clemente XI (papa dal 1700); seguono i ritratti di cardinali, il primo dei quali è quello di Emmanuel Théodose de la Tour d’Auvergne (creato cardinale nel 1669) e l’ultimo di Vincenzo Grimani (creato nel 1697). L’errore dev’essere stato indotto proprio dal frontespizio e in particolare dal nome di Innocenzo XI, che fu papa dal 1676. Tale frontespizio, dunque, sicuramente non anteriore al 1676 (e non posteriore al 1691, anno di morte dell’editore) venne utilizzato anche per le raccolte pubblicate successivamente dai suoi eredi. Lo dimostra chiaramente proprio il ritratto del Ferrari.

Riecheggia strutturalmente il precedente. La didascalia appare meno dettagliata: FR(ATER) THOMAS MARIA  S(ANCTAE) R(OMANAE) E(CCLESIAE) PRESBYTER CARDINALIS FERRARI ORD(INIS) PRAEDICATORUM MANDURIENSIS CREATUS DIE XII DECEMBRIS MDCXCV (Fratello Tommaso Maria Ferrari cardinale presbitero di Santa Romana Chiesa dell’ordine dei Predicatori di Manduria creato il giorno 12 dicembre 1695). Obiit anno1716 (Morì nell’anno 1716) è un’aggiunta fatta dalla mano se non di un vandalo almeno di qualcuno poco rispettoso dell’integrità del documento originale).

In basso a sinistra: L. David Pinxit (L. David l’ha disegnato) e a destra Benedictus Fariat Scul(psit) (Benedetto Fariat l’ha inciso). Sappiamo così che il disegnatore fu Ludovico Antonio David (1648-dopo il 1709), pittore nato a Lugano, e l’incisore il francese Benoît Farjat (1646 – 1724).

Fuori campo: Dominicus de Rubeis Haeres Io(hannis) Iacobi de Rubeis formis Romae ad Templum S(anctae) M(ariae) de Pace cum priv(ilegio) S(ummi) P(ontificis) et Super(iorum) perm(issu) (Domenico de Rossi erede con i tipi di Giovanni Iacopo de Rossi presso il tempio di Santa Maria della Pace con privilegio del Sommo Pontefice e col permesso dei Superiori).

La pubblicazione di questo ritratto, perciò, dev’essere successiva al 1691, data di morte di Giovanni Iacopo, di cui Domenico era figlio ed erede.

Il terzo è in Giacinto Gimma, Elogi accademici della società degli Spensierati di Rossano, A spese di Carlo Troise stampatore accademico della medesima società, Napoli, 1703, p. 269.

THOMAS MARIA FERRARI S(ANCTAE) R(OMANAE) E(CCLESIAE) CARDINALIS ACADEMICUS INCURIOSUS

(Tommaso Maria Ferrari cardinale di Santa Romana Chiesa accademico incurioso)

L’accademia degli Spensierati era stata fondata da Giacinto Gimma (Bari, 1668-Bari, 1735) a Rossano nel 1695 e successivamente assunse il nome di Accademia degli Incuriosi. Il Gimma fu anche socio dell’Arcadia col nome pastorale di Liredo Messoleo.

A p. 281 il Gimma riporta tre testi encomiastici del Ferrari elaborati da accademici Incuriosi, i primi due da Simone Viglini, l’ultimo da Padovano Guasco.

Il primo è un anagramma puro, una prova di abilità secondo un gusto, si direbbe enigmistico, in voga in quel tempo. Di seguito la traduzione dei due testi: Tommaso Maria Ferrari dell’ordine dei predicatori/Qui, a Roma, presso le prime funzioni della vita pubblica rara dottrina per gli dei, sale della terra.

Il secondo è un epigramma in distici elegiaci. Traduzione (con correzione della punteggiatura originale): Perché per te il cognome Ferrari , quando l’aurea virtù e la sorte ti diedero grandi doni, mentre la porpora ti circonda e il tirio galero ti adorna, o rara gloria del nostro suolo? Qual è dunque il motivo? Lo dirò: certamente così chiamato per nulla insuperbito oltrepasserai i limiti, il che è tutto il bene di te.

L’ultimo è un distico elegiaco. Traduzione:  Sarai detto Ferrari dal ferro. Ma i nomi sbagliano. Ti dia il nome la calamita, mentre a te attrai i cuori.

Il quarto ritratto è in Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Ordinum religiosorum in ecclesia militanti catalogus, eorumque indumenta iconibus expressa …, s. n., Venezia, 1707.
