PBW Witch Shop & Zine Distro
The PBW Witch Shop is a curated selection of witchcraft and magic related zines, books, pin-back buttons, tarot cards and more.
We focus on traditional and folkloric witchcraft, animism, chaos magic, secular witchcraft, magical herbs and plants, queer witchcraft, tarot & Divination, witchcraft & magic in politics, history, culture, and social & racial justice, and aspects of non-Wiccan forms of witchcraft, magic, and paganism.
Pre-Covid the Portland Button Works primarily made custom pinback button. Selling zines and books was secondary and more of a hobby for me to share things I’d like to read. Right now our business is pivoting to focus on books and zines that people can read in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Some items are from well known witchcraft and occult publisher and some are titles from small publishers with interesting items I don’t see in other shops but I’m excited to elevate.
Not everyone has income to buy books right now, we totally understand that, but I would love it if you were able to reblog this post or share Portland Button Works and PBW Witch Shop with your friends.
If you have been looking for a book about something specific, or if you think something would be a good fit for our catalog, get in touch. We can order almost any book in print, even if it isn’t witchcraft or magic related.

I have seen several beginners saying that they understand and agree with the fact that witchcraft paths should not be learned solely via tiktok, youtube, or social media BUT that they find the statement frustrating when those of us more experienced in these areas don't have alternatives to recommend. Which is completely understandable.
So to do my part, I put together a list of great books that have helped me in my path. I'm also including books I haven't read yet but are going to or ones I won't be reading but have in stock in my store's library to cover other areas of the Craft that may not be in my interest and those will be marked with an astrix. These are all very several areas and types of witchcraft.
Note: I am not wiccan nor do I practice ceremonial or kabbalistic magick and am this unable to provide much suggestion save a couple books on these areas.
Note 2: I have learned much of my Craft also from books that are extremely old. There are some that I have that are first editions from the 17 or 1800s that were very expensive. I recommend visiting libraries to try and find these if you aren't able to afford them. You can also sometimes find PDFs of these titles too if you try googling them.
Note 3: the best tip for choosing books is go with the earliest editions and oldest copies you can find. Then work your way up and compare how they have changed over time and see if you perhaps resonate more with the older concepts over new ones. This seems to be the case with me quite often.
Note 4: stay away from authors Silver Ravenwolf and Scott Cunningham. I plan on making a specific post about why soon, but the general gist is that it is watered down witchcraft and not good information. This is however my own opinion so you are of course able to go that route if you so choose.
List:
1. Nightside of the Runes-Thomas Karlsson, PHD
2. The Chaldean Oracles-Thomas Taylor (there are several options for translations though)
3. The hanged God-Shanu Oates
4. Wolfs-head- Shani Oates
5. Atlantis the Antideluvian world (1882) -Ignaceous Donnelly
6. Norse Mythology (1879)- RB Anderson
7. A System of Magic (1840)- Daniel De Foe
8. Ars Philtrom- Daniel A Schulke
9. Apocalyptic Witchcraft- Peter Grey*
10. Treading the Mill-Nigel Pearson
11. Traditional Witchcraft, A Cornish Book Of Ways-Gemma Gary
12. The Picatrix
13. The Poetic Edda's (read more than one translation)
14. Mother Russia-Joanna Hubbs
15. Russian Black Magic- Natasha Hglvin
16. The Greek Magical Papyri
17. Psychic Self Defense-Dion Fortune*
18. A History of Witchcraft-Jefferey B Russell
19. Hecate's Fountain-Kenneth Grant
20. The Essential Enochian Grimoire-Aaron Leitch*
21. Fierce Feminine Divinities of Eurasia and Latin America- Malgorzata Oleszkiewicz-Peralba
22. The Gods and Goddesses of Europe-Marija Gimbutus*
23. Drawing Down the Spirits-Kenaz Filan and Raven Kaldera
24. Magick in Theory and in Practice-Aleister Crowley
24. Pharmako Dynamis, Pharmako Poeia, and Pharmako Gnosis all by Dale Pendell
25. The Magi
26. Backwoods Witchcraft- Jake Richards
27. The Veneficium- David Schulke
There are loads more but are currently in my out building on my land where I have no electricity and it's snowing so I can send more if anyone is searching for something in a specific genre or anything in a specific type of magick or practice. Just send me a message and I'm happy to oblige.
Read with discernment and intuition. Continue to study in areas that excite you in your soul as you read and let go of those that don't. Let your research steer you in the direction it's meant to and trust yourself and the pull of your ancestors.
Lastly, read the lore and folk tales of your area and it will lead you to several cultural practices that stem from those tales, most of which are leftover pagan and folk Magick practices that have lasted through the test of time.
