If you are a WoD fan and you aren’t aware of how fucking wild White Wolf’s strategy for marketing Demon: the Fallen was, that changes right fucking now, get ready.
So, the year is 2002, American Culture is still moving past the Satanic Panic, and your job is to market a Table Top Role Playing Game where you play as literal demons who were aligned with the Biblical figure of Lucifer. The book has a big ass pentagram on its cover, and is filled with information on fictional demons and their demonic powers.
How do you market this?
Well, isn’t it obvious?
You satirise Chick Tracks by making a fake one about how the game you’re supposed to be promoting is satanic. I’ve linked it below, it’s only 23 pages long;
But you may be thinking: “Ok, that’s a funny concept, but why is this such a big deal to you?” Well, buckle the fuck up kiddo’s, because I want you to look at that last panel again:

Do you notice anything about it that could prompt further inquiry? What about that URL?
You see, the chick track was only one part of this little marketing stunt.
And so, I ask again, how do you market Demon: the Fallen?
You create an entire fake Evangelical church website called the Eternal Grace Evangelical Church, and write a fake sermon in which you claim that the brand that hired you is producing games that turn children into drug addicts and sexual predators, also claiming that Vampire: the Masquerade was involved in real world murders including the fucking Columbine School Shooting.

Quick note, they used EVERY part of the evangelical bullshit playbook to make this site look legit, they went hard on this. So, the site is satire, but it still feels like it would be a good idea to mention that they satirise everything about Evangelicals, including their homophobic, transphobic, anti-catholic, and anti-pagan beliefs.

In particular, the moral execration contained with the Demon book takes these aberrations to new levels by openly encouraging players to act in the interests of Satan (or Lucifer, as he is depicted herein).”
“Additionally, role-playing games teach that violence is an acceptable and even admirable way of solving problems. Significant portions of their rules are devoted to combat and weaponry. Demon, for example, also contains systems by which the satanic characters can attack or use magic upon their enemies, with dark arts spawned from Hell itself. These are not unlike the gay community’s reactionary “straight bashing” in response to the more physical efforts of their loving fellows (but loving in the Lord’s intended way) to bring them back into the fold.”

White Wolf was frequently quite edgy, and often wasn’t great at dealing with social issues (you could argue this is still true of the modern World of Darkness in some cases). But honestly I think this is a fun stunt. It mocks evangelicals for all their insane bigoted beliefs, and for basically giving all the stuff they call satanic free advertising. No matter what though this is an unhinged marketing stunt, and it is so wild that they actually did this.

The COVID-19 pandemic’s sudden onset in 2020 and its persistent impacts in ensuing years posed new challenges for large U.S. cities and metropolitan areas.
Some of the initial challenges were related to the specific nature of the coronavirus and public health responses. In March 2020, residents of cold, dense cities seemed at greater risk of contracting the airborne illness than those in more spread-out, temperate communities where people could spend time outside year-round.1 More persistent challenges are related to the rapid adoption of remote work technologies, which enable certain kinds of work to be done anywhere with a high-speed internet connection, and not necessarily in big-city downtowns dominated by what today are increasingly vacant office buildings.
In an increasingly hyper-polarized country, some of these dynamics intersected with partisan politics. Republican-led states such as Florida and Texas positioned themselves as refuges for movers seeking escape from “Covid lockdowns” in Democratic-led states. In response to these and other political factors, Elon Musk moved Tesla’s headquarters from Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas, and a prominent Chicago financier moved his hedge fund to Miami after his employees started working from a high-end hotel there during the height of the pandemic.
The housing market also played a role in fueling migration during this time. As more people worked from home, demand for homeownership rose, particularly for larger homes. For example, in San Diego County—which for many years had built little new housing—median home prices skyrocketed from $660,000 in January 2020 to $860,000 just two years later, according to Zillow. Prices also rose in more affordable, flexible markets, but much more modestly; in Houston over that same time, the median home price increased from $195,000 to $240,000.
My colleague William H. Frey was among the first to document significant migration away from big metro areas during the pandemic. His analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data showed accelerated domestic out-migration from large, coastal metro areas such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, and Seattle between 2020 and 2021. Domestic in-migration, meanwhile, remained strong in Sun Belt metro areas such as Phoenix, Dallas, Tampa, Fla., San Antonio, and Raleigh, N.C. Frey’s subsequent analysis showed these trends moderated through 2022 and 2023 as the initial impacts of the pandemic subsided.
Even if they are temporary in some respects, these recent migration patterns could have lasting impacts. Richard Florida, for instance, points to the rise of “meta cities”—large U.S. metro areas distant from each other yet linked closely by the ties of remote work and Covid-era movers, such as New York and Miami (finance), the Bay Area and Austin (tech), and Los Angeles and Nashville, Tenn. (entertainment). The Economic Innovation Group chronicled a loss of high earners from major urban centers such as New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. during the first two years of the pandemic. The home listing service Redfin, meanwhile, noted rising housing demand in affordable markets proximate to major metro areas (e.g., New Haven, Conn. outside New York; Richmond, Va. outside Washington, D.C.; Worcester, Mass. outside Boston), suggesting the growing prominence of hybrid (versus fully remote) work arrangements. How these dynamics play out could have significant implications for the economic and social health of cities, and for America’s urban hierarchy in the 21st century.
To better understand these dynamics, this report analyzes data from the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Statistics of Income program on U.S. population migration at the county level. The data tracks individual income tax filers who changed addresses from one year to the next, and reports the number of tax filers moving between counties (a proxy for households), the number of personal exemptions among those filers (a proxy for individuals), and the total adjusted gross income reported on their returns (a proxy for household income). While the IRS migration data is only currently available through 2022 (versus 2023 in Census Bureau migration data), it has the advantages of tracking movements between specific counties and revealing something about the economic status of migrating households.2
This report uses the IRS county-level migration data to track movement before and after the pandemic’s onset among U.S. metropolitan areas, which are collections of counties that approximate regional economies and labor markets.3 The analysis assigns each county in the dataset to its corresponding metro area based on the latest Census Bureau metropolitan delineations.4 An important limitation of the IRS data is that it suppresses county-to-county flows of fewer than 20 tax filers to protect taxpayer privacy. In 2021-22, for instance, the data reflects a total of 7.6 million U.S. filers moving to metropolitan counties, with the source county indicated for 5.8 million of them. This means that the county-to-county data misses 1.8 million households (or 23% of all households) moving to metropolitan counties in 2021-22. Many of these households likely moved from small, non-metropolitan counties, but the flows among metro areas charted here inevitably miss moves occurring between smaller counties in metro areas of all sizes.
Despite this limitation, the IRS data is useful for answering basic questions about domestic migration and the possible impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on the nation’s metropolitan areas, this analysis specifically asks if and how the pandemic may have altered the:
Overall level of migration within and among metro areas
Key metropolitan origins and destinations of movers
Economic character of movers, and/or their sending/receiving communities
In general, the analysis confirms that the pandemic made an impact on metropolitan migration patterns, but also finds that these changes did not significantly alter the demographic or economic trajectory of metro regions. The analysis concludes with thoughts on the implications of these patterns as the economy returns to a “new normal” in the pandemic’s aftermath.

In May, G-Eazy surprised fans with “Lady Killers III,” a brand-new version of his explosive viral hit, breathing new life into the much-loved track that has been taking the internet by storm in recent months. The original “Lady Killers Remix” experienced a major surge in viral popularity, rising to #2 on the Billboard TikTok chart, #4 on the Shazam U.S. Chart and #7 on the Shazam Global Chart. La grande epoca di Internet ha un difetto genetico di base: la piccolezza delle opinioni esposte sul più grande palcoscenico, spesso espresse con un'aggressività e un totalitarismo tali che ormai sembra far parte del pacchetto espressivo delle persone.
L'opinione è libera? Insomma, direi. Non oggi.
Ma di sicuro, anche quando è in contrasto col proprio credo, un'opinione andrebbe almeno formulata solo dopo un'attività intellettuale preventiva, averci pensato un po'. Andrebbe almeno ben argomentata e non sputata senza nemmeno saper motivarla o ancora più comunemente riprodotta seguendo l'opinione della massa.
L'argomento del giorno è lo spot Esselunga e i filosofi da tastiera si sono già lanciati in spinose, crudeli, efferate e spesso sgrammaticate critiche (avevate dubbi?).
Passiamo a un esame veloce ma ben dettagliato del perchè, secondo me, non solo queste critiche sono sterili, ma lo spot Esselunga è un tipo di pubblicità assolutamente riuscito.
La realtà è online. Esselunga ha avuto un coraggio da leoni, che è innegabile. Personalmente, adoro chi osa.
La società è cambiata e la famiglia è stravolta, chiunque si lamenta che "si stava meglio quando si stava peggio" ma quando siamo messi di fronte alla realtà delle cose, la rifiutiamo.
La famiglia della Mulino Bianco è morta da un pezzo e se la vogliamo dire tutta non è mai esistita. Semmai fa parte di quelle utopie impossibili che rendono la realtà delle famiglie ancora più frustrante e insopportabile perché propongono canoni talmente estremizzati da essere irrealizzabili.
Esselunga ha avuto coraggio. Ha proposto una famiglia attuale, imperfetta, disordinata, incasinata, vera. Che prova a fare il meglio che può anche quando le cose non vanno. Ha proposto un modello diverso dagli spot di massa ma molto, molto comune e possibile. Perchè in questo paese abbiamo ancora così tanta paura della realtà?
2. Il peccato della separazione. Il brand ha provato a sdemonizzare la separazione di una coppia come colpa mortale di cui vergognarsi. Le coppie scoppiano e si sa. Ma noi siamo sempre così pronti a battere il martelletto sulla vita degli altri. Abbiamo sempre la presunzione di sapere perchè le coppie scoppiano. Ma per esperienza diretta avendo genitori separati, io vi dico: la separazione spesso è una vera e propria benedizione. Non ci credete? Provate a stare insieme per forza quando le cose non vanno e vedere i risultati sui figli.
3. Attenzione ai bambini. Lo spot non è affatto incentrato sugli adulti, ma sulla bambina. Se siete onesti, saprete che nelle famiglie con problemi i bambini sono spesso dimenticati. Troppo presi a giudicare le scelte degli adulti, a farsi guerre legali, a portare dalla propria parte alleati con il racconto di come sono andate le cose, i bambini di coppie in crisi o separate sono le prime vittime innocenti la cui sofferenza è ignorata.
4. Il cuore è in prima linea. Esselunga propone un marketing di tipo emozionale molto efficace, che ha l'obiettivo di colpire dentro un pubblico molto vasto attraverso una storia semplice, comune e facilmente assimilabile emotivamente. Che sia per esperienza diretta o per umana immedesimazione, lo spot è in grado di suscitare emozioni, sia di tenerezza, che di tristezza, che di dolcezza o di altro, creando un legame con lo spettatore.
5. Enorme reazione mediatica. Se si chiama pubblicità, un motivo ci sarà. L'obiettivo finale è arrivare: al cuore del consumatore, nella memoria della maggior parte, nelle bocche e nelle tastiere. Quello che non si può pretendere è che il maledetto politicamente corretto non venga ferito. Siamo un paese di code di paglia. Ma la verità è che lo spot non ha offeso nessuno. Chi si sente offeso ha una carenza di sensibilità per il valore del progetto e dei messaggi che manda e poca aderenza alla realtà sociale.
Ma come sempre più è piccolo il cervello e più sono lunghe le lingue.
