Disclaimer‼️ I am not a professional designer in anyway. These are just my opinions and if you like the original designs that is a-okay and more power to you!
So I found out about the Hundred Line Defense Academy from a repost tweet and checked it out only to find that most of the designs are alright… well except for two. Two of the designs we’ve seen so far were either so bad or so awkward that I felt the urge to redesign them complete with design comments.
Closeups + extra comments + earlier outfits I was struggling with under the cut ✨
Darumi’s original design is the one I actually outright hate. There’s just too much going on (the blue hair that awkwardly goes from black to blue at the top, the bows, the weird face tattoos, the striped sweater with bright red patches randomly thrown on, and the random pins??)
Plus the colors are just an eye sore (bright light blue, bright pink for the eyes, dark blue for the sweater, and strong red for chocked and patches????)
She also gives me vibes of being made in a test tube to be the fan favorite
Not only that but we have only seen two lines of dialogue from her we’ve seen (as of making this post) are just like- groan worthy
I went with the black with bright colors to try and make the whole “bright” colors thing work without making it as much of an eyesore
Anyways I feel like I strayed too far from the original in my redesign. I could’ve stuck to the blue color scheme a bit more instead of making her mostly black and pink. Oh well, it is what it is. I at least improved the colors a bit and still made the design fit her personality which is what matters
Kako’s original design is better to me than Darumi’s. It’s more awkward that outright bad
Again, the colors are a bit weird, but unlike Darumi’s original colors, the original colors could work. Light lilac, crimson red, navy, and white could work. The problem is the placing. By making Kako’s hair light lilac and uniform crimson red, that makes her mostly liliac and red which classes a lot. Your eyes are immediately drawn to the red uniform because it stands out so much instead of her face
However, unlike Darumi, another complaint I have is that Kako just looks like two Danganronpa characters smashed together (which is a fair complaint in my opinion because Kodaka made Kako AND Danganronpa and it’s in the same art style). She has a light lilac hair and purple eyes, which makes her look like Kyoko Kirigiri and a VERY similar outfit to Maki Harukawa (there’s a few differences like how Maki has a white bow with tiny red dots, a striped collar, and infinity pin and how Kako’s uniform is a dress and Maki’s is a shirt and skirt). Like at the very least they could have changed the uniform colors and eye colors
It took me until finishing Kako’s ref up to realize this, but the mini buns and extra strands of hair could work because they are kinda similar to Sailor Moon, and I dig her design. Though Kako’s hair is still off to me despite that for a reason I can’t pin down
Anyways I ended up making my redesign closer to her original design because her original design wasn’t as bad as Darumi’s and because I felt like I needed to balance things out since I made Darumi too far from the original I think
Alright that’s all I got commentary wise. Here’s some work in progress stuff for outfits that I ended up not going with
Hope this was a fun read through, for those interested

If we ever do get a new Danganronpa game do you think it won’t involve junko (even in v3 she she was involved)
I just want to have a moment where I can actually say the wicked witch is dead and not have to eat my words
I think it kind of depends on how much Kodaka is involved in the new game in question. The more involved he is, the more inescapable some form of Junko Return becomes, IMO. He's admitted before that Junko became so unexpectedly popular so quickly in the wake of DR1 that he felt like he could never create any mastermind to surpass her or even rival her, which he claims is a big reason DR2 ends as it does. (Although he hasn't spoken about this since the release V3, I have to assume that same logic is at play regarding V3's ending.)
Then again, maybe some time away from the series will refresh his mind and give him motivation/desire to finally escape her clutches. Or alternatively, I believe a new lead writer would feel more comfortable with (and more of a pressing desire for) completely leaving her in the past.

Technical work in progress because I have one other design I wanna redo from what little we’ve seen of Hundred Line (other designs look FINE to me it was just Darumi’s and Kako’s that looked especially bad to me.)
But yea expect a post soon with a Kako Tsukumo redesign too and redesign notes.
Also yes this is a Darumi redesign. I strayed too far from the og a bit, but eh I think the core personality/vibe is still there and that is all that matters (also the colors don’t make your eye bleed)

i miss danganronpa man, if i were spike chun i would milk the franchise.
I often feel the same. Even though I know it would probably eventually hurt the brand to do so... I only care about that sometimes. And other days? I just accept just too addicted to the characters and setup to even worry about it. lol.
October of 2021 that they were planning to expand the DR franchise "with games in various genres" after DRS. So we're obviously not 100% done with the property. Though for now, I'm only expecting more weird spinoffs. I think they're going to shy away from making a proper "Danganronpa 4" until they wait and see if their partnership with TooKyo Games bears similarly profitable fruit. No reason to risk the possibility of disappointing/upsetting Kodaka and making him grab a new publishing partner if he might still bring in more cash for the company.
But if enough years pass without Kodaka's new projects bringing them the attention and money that a fourth Danganronpa can pull in? They'll eventually go back to the well. And they'll ask him to participate, sure. But they own the IP. They can proceed without him.
I worry about the possibility of a "Danganronpa 4" without Kodaka at the helm, though. If Kodaka isn't the guiding hand in the writing, would it feel the same? Idk. "Danganronpa S" was the first game of any kind to lack his presence, and though it usually felt pretty good, you could still tell something was OFF frequently.
Or maybe I don't care about that and just want them to make more stuff??? I don't know. It's not like other authors haven't played in this universe before, as evidenced by many of the light novels and Killer Killer.
Honestly, I'm STILL surprised that, at the bare minimum, they haven't done more anime adaptions/tie-ins? I know they made money on the first two. Adapt V3, adapt the DRK novels.... fuck, even adapt Killer Killer, as bizarre and dumb as it is. Or maybe adapt some of the light novels into manga first? Danganronpa Zero and Danganronpa Kirigiri would both make for great manga. Even Danganronpa Togami could work in that medium! There's a wealth of material out there already that can be further expanded and exploited beyond just the games.
Maybe it's the mixed responses to the previous two anime series that's keeping them away from doing more. But from what I understand, Danganronpa 3 in particular was better-received in Japan than it was among the English-speaking fans. Not necessarily beloved, but the the Japanese consensus on it seems to be "Hey, not bad."

@gontagokuhara-week Day 1 - protector / gentleman
V3-4's tricky for me to talk about for one or two reasons, but one thing I can say is that Gonta intentionally throwing away his dream of being a gentleman - something he ties everything about himself around - in order to protect everyone from the truth... to me that's one of the most underrated yet coolest things in V3.
It's still technically his birthday where I am, but this feels a smidge dark for that, so there's a more celebratory birthday variant of this on my twitter!
(I can only do a bit of Gonta Gokuhara Week, but I should hopefully have some stuff for the last two or three days ^^)
