“Wait, are you serious? You've never actually seen Hex before?” Jacked asked her incredulously. Then he turned to the others. “Get this sprite! She wants to meet Hex but she doesn’t even know what she looks like!”

Fae shifted uncomfortably as the two binomes laughed. “I’d know her when I sensed her…” She mumbled.

“Hey, hey, hey, my dudes, lay off her.” Said the thought-to-be passed out sprite at the end of the table. “You, little peach dude. Why do you like Hexadecimal so much?”

Fae looked down at the newly-gifted mask in her hands. This was Hex's face. Her face! She could actually see it now, and as she gazed upon it, the world around her lost focus.

“She is the Fire.” The small virus said softly. “She is the light, the heat of this world. She is the creator and the destroyer, the master of the ether and the keeper of the Void. Through her all things are possible. Without her…all hope is lost.”

She lingered on her visage a nano more, then looked up to find the dataforms staring at her in stunned silence.

“Ummm..." Jacked started uncomfortably, "we’re…we’re still talking about Hexadecimal, right? The .BAT-shift crazy virus that would tear off your face but get bored halfway through? There’s a reason they make those masks to freak people out, you know.”

Author's note if you're curious!: Fae is an energy, or 'etheric' virus, (essentially a pile of sentient viral energy with a sprite-like form) hiding in Mainframe.

Because of her makeup, information in the ether affects how she processes the world, which can be useful or problematic.

At this point in the story, Hex’s presence in the ether is so powerful that the first time they “meet”, Fae perceives her as a sudden, overwhelming wash of color, emotion, and light. Only later does she learn that Hex is a person, and the fascination begins.

Fae’s senses and other abilities are based on the ups and downs of my autism and a neat little thing I have called ‘synesthesia’.
