I only got like four hours of sleep, so I'll probably go through and make small edits, but overall I think it's ready. While there is only a hint of Garashir, I'm tagging it cause lol hopefully y'all will enjoy this too. Garak is...being Garak. lolol

So what do I notice about my first lines?

2/10 are dialogue... And only one or two words.

7/10 mention a name or pronoun. 🫠 Might want to try to break that up a bit.

2/10 establish locations.

5/10 establish the trope, theme, what the story is about.

3/10 have at least one word in italics.

Notes: This has been my baby for a long time. What started out years ago to be 4,000 words max has blossomed into the longest fic I've ever written.

Summary, overall: When Jules is born there is a name over his heart. That's not unusual since there's always an age difference between soulmates. After all, the names appear at the exact moment when the other half is born—down to the millisecond. The odd part of Jules' mark is the name itself. Only one word—Data. What is that supposed to mean? What kind of name is that? It's not even a proper name. His soulmate isn't a Liam, or a Noah, or a Sophia or an Evelyn—something normal. No, the one who matches Jules' soul goes by Data.

Data does not understand this need that humans have to be with one's soulmate, even though he has one himself. The name, Jules Subatoi Bashir, appeared over where a human heart would be, three years after being activated. It is a particular signature—very sloppy with embellished loops—like it had been written in some sort of hurry. He keeps the mark to himself, finding that it is no one else's concern. It is unimportant, and would only serve as a distraction to his work and life.

Snippet: "Excuse me, Doctor. May I have a word?" Data waits a beat, blinks, and continues. "I can escort you on your way back to Deep Space Nine. We can speak on the way."

Julian feels his heart rate speed up. What could Data want to discuss with him? It could be a number of things… It could be that Data has decided to report him for trespassing after all, and is leading him to await disciplinary action. It could be that Data wishes to discuss dreaming further such as dreaming or to ask curious questions about Deep Space Nine. Data's inquisitive, it wouldn't be too much out of the question.

Or…?

All of the familiar fears and insecurities rise up. The thoughts of being soulmates—all the implications and questions that no one has an answer to flood his mind. Things that have been plaguing him almost all of his life.

When Julian still has not answered, Data questions, "Did I offend you, Doctor? Was it wrong to—"

"No, Data, it's fine!" Julian blurts out quickly and loudly. He doesn't want Data thinking something that isn't true. "You caught me off guard; that's all." He makes sure to put on his dazzling smile. "I'd be delighted to continue having a conversation with you."

Data nods, turns back towards the other officer. "Geordi, I would like to speak to Doctor Bashir in private. Can you please go elsewhere?"

To Julian's surprise, Lieutenant Commander La Forge throws back his head and laughs. "Yeah, sure, Data. I'll meet you later. " He turns on his heel and calls over his shoulder. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do."

Julian blinks in confusion, and notices that Data is doing the same.

"What could he mean by that?" Data ponders out loud—if he is speaking to himself or to Julian, Julian is not sure. Data stares blankly down the corridor until La Forge has left.

My vision for endgame Data/Julian which has consumed me ever since I watched Picard 😅

1.DS9

A few months after the Dominion war, the Enterprise docks at DS9 for a short while allowing Data to meet his long-time pen-friend, Julian, again. Julian's not doing well, but since he seems to enjoy Data's company, Data decides to take a couple more weeks of leave to spend some more time with his friend.

However, Julian starts becoming more and more withdrawn and anxious, and after an incident one evening where he becomes agitated to the point of storming out, Data reaches out to Deanna to see if she can give him any insight into his friend's behaviour. She has some ideas, but also suggests that Data ask Keiko, and after talking with the O'Briens, Data believes he understands what's wrong.

When he asks Julian if he's correct in thinking that his impending departure is what's upsetting the doctor, Julian's surprise at the question is enough that he answers truthfully - yes. To Data, the solution is obvious: if Julian is distressed by the idea of someone else leaving him, then Data will not leave. (Julian begs him not to make promises he cannot keep, and has a minor breakdown when he realises that Data is deadly serious.)

After a lot of conversation, some favour-cashing, and the fortunate coincidence that one of Beverly's doctors was beginning to look for a promotion to CMO, Julian ends up transferred to the Enterprise: technically a demotion, but after so long having so much on his shoulders, it's actually a relief.

2. Enterprise

While on Enterprise, Data and Julian get closer and closer. Their relationship brings some difficulties when it becomes public, though: some see the fact Julian's dating an android as proof that he's not really human; others wonder how Data's affection can be real, and feel that if he were as human as he wants to be, then he wouldn't be dating an augment. Julian's parents definitely berate him for wasting all the gifts they gave him by marrying an android - if only he'd talked to them before the wedding, they could have adbised him against it! - making him a zillion times more grateful Data talked him out of inviting them every time he started to feel guilty about it.

But that's by the by. They're together, happily married, endgame Julian/Data achieved, right?

3. ...

Wrong. I hate Nemesis, but imagine Julian following Data down before he throws himself into space, knowing he could probably stop Data from doing this if he asks. Data saying, "I know I promised never to leave you," and Julian shaking his head and barely being able to choke out the words "It's okay," and then Data's gone.

And Geordi's trying to reassure Julian (Geordi's trying to convince himself...) that Data will be alright, he's got the emergency tranport unit, and they get back to the bridge, and Picard transports in, and Data's still on the ship that's blowing up, and Deanna's asking what happened and Julian's sliding down against a wall, horarsely whispering "I let him go..."

4. Picard: s1

20 years later... I haven't quite decided when I want Julian to appear, because the idea of Julian fighting for android rights is everything to me, but also I kind of like the premise of changing as little as possible in canon...

(Maybe Julian had tried to be part of the movement for android rights, bu the media had really latched onto his augment status and used it as another reason to discredit the movement, and so he'd withdrawn from it, as it seemed his presence was doing more harm than good….)

So the Picard crew all return to the Riker-Troi household after the final showdown and Deanna welcomes them in with a "Guess who we finally managed to get in contact with" and bring them into the lounge where Julian' anxiously waiting.

And of course the initial introduction is awkward and Julian's talking a million words a minute until Will pokes him and then over the next few days he's trying to keep his distance so that Soji doesn't feel that she needs to let him into her life...

And meanwhile Soji is still, you know, coping with ALL the feelings and trauma that the last - what, week? - have given her and so she has no idea what to do with this man, who was apparently her father's husband, especially as she has no clue how he feels about the whole suddenly-having-an-android-stepdaughter thing.

But eventually they do manage to have a conversation (/are forced to talk it out) and they get on so well and Soji realises how much Julian genuinely wants to get to know her for her sake and while Julian's terrified at the prospect of having a daughter, he's also delighted (and Will and Deanna make them both stick around for a whole while, 1. because they do enjoy having them both around, 2. because Kestra adores Soji, and the two are pretty good for each other, and 3. because, while they have kept in contact with Julian over the years, they also know how long he's been on his own for, and they want to make sure he's got a solid base and people to lean on. As much as Julian wants to be a good father, Soji deserves more than one traumatised, lonely man doing a best that would quite possibly not be good enough...)

5. Picard: s3

Julian and Soji are visiting Geordi at the museum when the Picard crew come along, and are swept into the action...

Julian learning that Data's alive - kind of... Julian tenderly kissing Data before they take down the partition, telling him he has to win so he can meet their daughter... The two of them barely having time to reunite before having to rush off to their respective duties in saving the ship...

(I have VISIONS of Soji and Julian working desperately together to find a cure for the transporter virus, while Julian's augment physiology has done something weird to make it that he's turning, but very, very slowly. Julian making sure that Soji is armed, and making her promise to shoot him if he turns too quickly. Soji telling him he has to keep fighting it and refusing to think about what it might come to. Julian realising he's about to lose control and getting Soji to restrain him. Soji despairing that she won't be able to find a cure by herself - she's not a doctor doctor like he is - and Julian reassuring her that he believes in her, she just needs to do her best... but most importantly, if she doesn't find it, it's alright, it's not her fault, and he loves her. Resistance is futile. A phaser shot.)

And afterwards, when Soji's found the cure and it's been distributed, Julian wakes up to find Data sitting next to him and Soji hovering nearby. He tries to scramble up and leave to help the rest of the crew, but Soji informs him that just as he took longer to turn, he took longer to get better, and he's the last one to wake up from it. And then she makes to leave, to give the two of them some time alone, and Julian tells her that's nonsense, she needs to meet Data, and Soji says that it's fine, they've been talking while he was asleep, and Julian replies that now he feels left out, so she definitely can't leave, come here, sit by me, I'm not letting either of you out of my sight.

Julian with his augmentation sight notices that Data has a subtle twitch in his hand that Data confesses he’s been unable to entirely get rid of on his own. Julian decides to approach it as a medical problem rather than a mechanical one.

Julian wants to know more about Data’s ability to sleep. Data offers to sleep with him so he can show him. 

Julian overworks himself and starts yawning while giving Data his physical. Data knows he won’t go to bed unless someone tricks him into it (this might just belong to above idea, but doesn’t have to).

Data and Julian have conversations about their similarities as engineered individuals.

Data and Julian discuss fathers who were “architects�� rather than parents.

Data and Julian discuss having brains that process differently/sensory overload.

Julian just flat out asks Data if he can study his bodily functions - because he’s not an asshole like Maddox, Data knows that he can trust him and agrees.

Data starts to mimic organic illnesses to experience what “being sick” is like. He accidentally gets quite sick and Julian has to nurse him to health.

Friends, it’s here. In response to @a-stitch-in-time-and-space‘s truly excellent Datashir prompts post, I have officially written a Datashir. Julian asks Data if he can examine him, to get a better idea of the ways his body is similar to a human’s. For science only, of course. There’s lots of touching, Data learns about feelings, and they cuddle. A lot.

I’ve always wanted to write Datashir but always hesitated because I thought it would be really difficult, but this just kind of poured out of me at 1 AM. I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY.

 Julian Bashir/Data, they spend some time cuddling because it's nice knowing you can hold someone without fear of how strong you are.

I have never written for this ship before, and while I don’t really ship them, I hope I made them justice!

Despite each of them being federation officers that worked in quite different fields, and quite different places, they made it work. Whenever Julian got some vacations to spare, he spent it at the Enterprise, and after their relationship began, Data started to take his shore leaves more seriously, allowing himself to spend those days at DS9 with Julian as often as he could. They rarely went out to other planets or had an actual shore leave together, but neither cared. They liked their jobs too much to just leave.

But they did miss each other quite a lot, during the times they didn't spend together.

This time, it was Data's turn to come to DS9. Julian was eagerly awaiting for his arrival, never being able to stop babbling about his boyfriend to pretty much everyone. All personal on the station always knew when commander Data was about to arrive, because Julian simply could not shut up. And yet, they found it quite endearing, the love he had for his android boyfriend.

As usual, Kira and Sisko were there to greet Data, more of a protocol really, and Julian always accompanied them with a grin on his face. After they all had talked and greeted each other as demanded, Julian jumped towards Data and wrapped himself around the android, always being fairly touch starved for a doctor.

Data never complained, finding his boyfriend's actions quite amusing, if not endearing, and since this time was no different, he held Julian close to himself and kissed his temple, receiving a happy hum from Julian in response. When they pulled apart, the doctor pulled him for a passionate kiss, one that took Data some time to get used to, but that he now responded in kind, understand it was a fairly human way of saying 'I missed you'.

Sisko and Kira left at that moment, allowing them both some alone time, and Julian did what he usually did whenever Data arrived: took him for a tour. Nothing had truly changed since Data's last visit, but he didn't mind walking next to Julian and allowing him to explicitly tell him which stores had being restored and what panels had been replaced. Then, they would grab something to eat (by which Julian would eat and Data would fondly watch), and then they would head over to Julian's quarters for a more pleasant time together.

That night, however, Data noticed how tired Julian was, and he responded with a yawn and a shrug.

"I'm fine Data. This week has been quite... worrisome to me, we have had a few cases of viruses and bacteria spreading through Bajor, but nothing too serious. I just had to work double, that is all" he explained, removing his uniform, and Data walked to him, assisting in the movement.

"Still, I believe you require a longer time for rest" he said, folding Julian's clothes as he removed them and then watching as the doctor turned around on his under garments, smiling at him. "Perhaps I could give you a massage. If you would like."

"I think just having you here is... quite enough, Data" he answered, leaning in and kissing him softly, and Data responded by kissing him back and holding his waist. He liked the feeling of Julian's lips against his own, and tried not to run any subroutine while they shared intimacies. Julian broke the kiss, to Data's disappointment, to let out a yawn. "Oh my... I'm sorry."

"You should sleep" Data insisted, leading Julian to bed and sitting down with him. "Why do you not rest? We can 'catch up' tomorrow."

"Catch up? You have been spending too much time with Riker and LaForge" Julian teased, smiling and then yawning again with a nod. "Okay... a little sleep... will you cuddle me?"

"Of course" Data removed his own uniform and laid next to Julian, watching as the doctor curled up and pushed his face on the crook of Data's neck. It felt comfortable, and Data wrapped his arms around Julian, pulling him closer in a way that would not hurt but would provide safety. Julian seemed more than happy, closing his eyes and holding Data by his waist, hugging him and breathing deeply. After only a few seconds, his breathing became regular, and Data was aware that Julian had fallen asleep.

Without being prompted, he held the man closer, kissing his head and allowing himself to, as humans said, wonder, activating sub processors and writing down his report for later logging.

For now, he was content by just holding Julian close, and allowing the doctor some good sleeping time.
