Mini Reviews: Jenny Sparks, Paranoid Gardens, and Ultimate Spider-Man
Mini Reviews: Jenny Sparks, Paranoid Gardens, and Ultimate Spider-Man. 3 comics this week! #comics #comicbooks

When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for. These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations. Logan Jenny Sparks #1 (DC/DC Black Label) – The Spirit of the 20th Century returns with a…

CLOSED! Preliminary Hot Vintage TV Men List
Alright folks! We have one week left on submissions for the Hot Vintage TV Men's Bracket! As promised here is a list of all the Hot Vintage TV Men who have been submitted and passed our preliminary eligibility checks. There are a handful of guys on this list and one or two not on it that we are currently still debating on so reminder that this list is not final and subject to change.
Currently we have 231 Hot Vintage TV Men!
Also in advance of the competition I'd like to remind anyone submitting propaganda for someone that starred in a show that aired only partially during our timeframe or was under 18 for a part of a shows filming, to please make sure you are only submitting propaganda that is from within our timeframe and when the actor was 18 years or older. This is also just good to keep in mind in general as several people submitted actors for shows that aren't eligible for our tournament either because it was outside our time period or in one case the actor was underaged for the entirety of the show (though many were eligible for other shows they were submitted for). We do our best to screen for these things but sometimes it's hard to tell or it’s a show we don't personally know well enough so we appreciate help from y'all letting us know if you do catch anything.
List below the cut

Note
Ofc it makes sense for ppl to associate comic runs and eras and defining marks on characters through the writers - and in that way we get spotlights on claremont, Morrison, Hickman, etc as defining xmen writers. But for you, who are the defining / house favorite artists? Kirby natch aside, ofc
In terms of X-Men artists?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dave Cockrum designed most of the All-New X-Men, and as much as I don't like him personally, John Byrne was a huge presence in the first half of the Claremont run.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, if it comes to my personal favorites I'd go with Paul Smith, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Bill Sienkiewicz.

The Impossible Players Open Christmas Belles… are you listening?
Tumblr media
The Impossible Players of Pueblo, CO. in grand tradition open the holiday season with Christmas Belles, by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten. The production opened Friday, 25th November, with an audience eager to begin the holiday season. The Impossible Players, or “Imps” as they are known locally, who claim the title of the oldest community theater troupe this side of the Mississippi, opened their holiday season with this new production – the second in a trilogy written by the same team – to an enthused audience.
The Impossible Playhouse, where the production is being staged, was lavishly decorated with Christmas themed elements from the main lobby all the way up to the stage. Candles, trees, twinkle lights, garlands, and wrapping paper line the walls of the playhouse to generate an authentic Christmas feeling for all visitors who are encouraged to participate in the show by it’s conclusion. It’s clear that first-time director Billy Herrington was determined to go all-in with his directorial debut.
“Growing up in the south, Christmas isn’t just another holiday, it’s a way of life.” Mr. Herrington declares.
“Covid messed up too many things,” comments one member of the audience. “Sometimes it feels like we’re still recovering from that. But these guys did their best to keep going even when everything else closed down and everyone was just in a (expletive omitted) mood about everything. These guys kept going and damned if I didn’t need the laughs. It’s also good to feel that holiday spirit with everything going on in the world.”
By the performance's conclusion, another attendee commented, "That Santa was an ornery old cuss. I loved it!"
The story of Belles centers on the small fictional town of Fayro, Texas. Wherein the famous Futrelle Sisters are caught up hopelessly in their own lives while trying to bring the community together for a Christmas pageant with a new spin that includes everything from camel costumes to the arrival of Elvis. At the center of the chaos is Honey Ray Futrelle, played by long time Impy Marlo Angel-Hartman, who is tasked with putting together and directing the Christmas pageant replacing the previous director Geneva, played by Donna Hickman. Geneva, in grand Texas fashion, refuses to give up the position without a fight and does what she can to manage different facets of the production, much to the dismay of Honey Ray.
In traditional family togetherness, Honey Ray has her two sisters to lean on for support. Twink, played by Gina Mann and Frankie, played by Melissa Santistevan. Twink’s help is limited by the fact that she’s currently a ward of the state on a work release program and shadowed by a sheriff’s deputy, played by Dave Conley. And the final sister, Frankie, is heavy with unborn twins that are long overdue and she’s hoping that constant activity will “give these two freeloaders some incentive”. Together, the sisters band together to keep the production lively and cheery through the midst of cast members who get sick, reneging celebrities, confused medications with delirious effects, last minute cast replacements, and shocking family revelations.
The ensemble of the cast include a combination of newcomers and veterans, Maranda Sandoval, William Hambric, Amber Shipley, Johnny Lucero, Jennifer Lunde-Elder, and Rich Keilholtz. The show opened to laughter, gags, and comedic facial expressions that the Impys are famous for and deliver it, they do!
The performances continue tonight, 26th November, as well as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th December – which is the matinee at 2 PM. As well as 9th and 10th December. House opens at 7 PM, curtain goes up at 7:30 PM. The playhouse is located at 1201 N. Main St., Pueblo, CO. 81003. Reservations can be made by calling (719) 542-6969 or you can follow the Impossible Players on Instagram and Facebook.

Data Pages and comics
Sometimes in comics you need to give the reader a lot of information in a short amount of time. The dreaded exposition.
Classical comic thinking is to do one of two things: a dialogue heavy page where one character is relaying the information to another (or the reader). This is usually done poorly:
Tumblr media
But sometimes it can be done (subjectively) well:
Tumblr media
The problem, though, is the As You Know trope. You have two characters, who know this information (or should know the info), but they are explaining it to each other as if they don't know. This is all for the reader's benefit. It's clunky and feels like Silver or Bronze Age comic writing.
Tumblr media
Sorry Scrooge…
The other way is through captions.
Tumblr media
Not all comics work well with narrative captions. Especially if captions are being used for internal character thoughts (I'm looking at you every-Wolverine-comic-ever).
A modern solution has been data pages. You've seen these a lot in works by Jonathan Hickman, like his creator work:
Tumblr media
And in the X-Men, predominately by designer Tom Muller (@hellomuller and @hellomullerltd).
Tumblr media
But they've popped up in manga like Gunnm/Battle Angel Alita:
Tumblr media
And Darwyn Cooke's Parker books (which even includes prose from the books that have been adapted):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as classic comic books like Fantastic Four
Tumblr media
And even webcomics such as Drive by Dave Kellet. He even includes the text in a blog post to be more readable on mobile devices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These all convey information that the author feels the reader should know. Some are done as a document, others as illustrative piece, but they are all giving the reader information.
What makes the Hickman/Muller data pages interesting (particularly in X-Men) is that they are not outside the realm of the story; they are part of it. These pages are documents pulled from the canon of the story. A file from Nick Fury's database, or an historical archive. Dave Kellet even does this with his Enciclopedia Xenobiologica entries about races, places, and technology in his webcomic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike classic data pages, such as the Baxter Building cutaway, modern datapages are also placed within the reading of the story, not as an extra or appendix. Strip Panel Naked over on Youtube explains Hickman and Muller's approach in detail (spoilers by the way for X-men!)
Tumblr media
So consider this as a solution to an exposition heavy sequence. Do a diagram showing your characters' heist plan. Create a schematic of a starship so your readers know where the characters are. Have a legal pad with a lawyer's notes about your character's story. And, if this is in a web or mobile comic, offer the text in a blog post (in fact it's a good practice to offer text of your dialogue).
This is just one solution to exposition. What's some other ones you've see work?

Moundsville Council Member Wondering Why Bus Levy Was Rejected
Tumblr media
Ginger DeWitt still wonders why. It’s been more than a month since four of seven members of the Moundsville City Council voted down the chance to place an OVRTA Bus Levy on the municipality’s November 5th ballot It was on Tuesday, June 18th, when council members Randy Chamberlain (At Large), Judy Hunt (Ward 1), Eugene Saunders (Ward 3), and David Wood (Ward 2) voted against the ballot placement. Mayor Sara Wood-Shaw (At-Large), Brianna Hickman (At-Large), and DeWitt (Ward 4) voted in favor. “I just know I voted ‘Yes’ because I believe every citizen has a voice and that they have a right for their voices to be heard on Election Day,” DeWitt explained. “I think it was confusing to a lot of people and no matter how many times it was explained, a lot of them thought it was going to be on the ballot no matter what. But that’s not how it works with tax levies and our (West Virginia) state code, and down it went. “I’ve wondered why (the four Council colleagues) didn’t want it on the ballot so the residents could vote for it, but I haven’t figured that out yet. They kept saying there was no ridership, but there were statistics in May that indicated there were riders,” she said. “The worst part was that so many residents came forward afterward who felt slighted by the vote because they believe it should have been on the ballot.” Pictured in this photo from September 2023 are (in front row) City Manager Rick Healy, Mayor Sara Wood-Shaw, David Wood, and Eugene Saunders. In the back row are City Clerk Sondra Hewitt, and council members Brianna Hickman, Ginger DeWitt, and Randy Chamberlain. Emails requesting each of the four councilors to explain their respective reasons behind their “No” votes were sent to each on June 23rd, and no replies have been received. A FOIA Request was filed with the City Clerk and City Manager offices requesting information pertaining to connected communication and distribution of information that involved the proposed levy. Both City Clerk Sondra Hewitt and City Manager Rick Healy have acknowledged receipt. “I do know Dave Wood’s reason for voting against putting the bus levy on the ballot because he stated it during the (June 18) Council meeting, but I do not know the reasons the other members voted against,” DeWitt said. “Dave Wood was for it in the beginning, but then he rode the bus to Wheeling and back, and there were no riders on those trips. “As long as I have known Dave Wood – and he was my sixth grade teacher – I’ve known him to be very thorough, so after riding it with no one else, he explained he thought it wouldn’t be a benefit to the citizens,” she said. “He said he didn’t want to see the taxpayers to pay for a service that wouldn’t be utilized.” According to official information provided by Moundsville’s city manager, OVRTA’s trial run from Wheeling to Moundsville attracted 375 total riders in May, the first month of the service. The statistics also indicate about 40 percent of the passengers were seniors, and that patrons rode the bus on 22 of the 27 days transport was available. “One thing that Mr. (Randy) Chamberlain said was that only 1 percent of Moundsville residents would use the bus service and he didn’t want to see the taxpayers pay for only 1 percent,” DeWitt remembered. “I’m still not sure how he could make that estimate on the ridership, though. If I couldn’t say 99 percent would use the bus, how can he say only 1 percent would? Ginger has been on the Moundsville City Council for more than 15 years, and her husband Don was involved with law enforcement for more than 20 years in Marshall County. “But that’s not the only inaccurate thing he said during the weeks leading up to the vote,” she said. “He kept saying it cost a lot of money to put the levy on the November ballot, and that simply wasn’t true. It wouldn’t have cost the city a dime. Not a dime, so that was misinformation, too.” DeWitt has represented residents on the southern end Moundsville for a little more than 15 years, and she doesn’t remember an issue that’s attracted so much attention. “We’ve not had anything as controversial as the bus levy during my years on Council, that’s for sure,” DeWitt reported. “When the bus levy came up this time, I didn’t think there would be such strong feelings on Council to keep the levy off the ballot. I think some (social media) posts that were made were intended, in my belief, to induce panic among the tax-paying citizens in Moundsville. “There were incorrect numbers shared and incorrect statements made, and I know Mr. (Randy) Chamberlain was posting against it for several weeks before the vote,” she said. “Mr. Chamberlain seemed against (placing the bus levy on the November ballot) from the very first meeting when OVRTA came to Council. He kept saying it was an orchestrated meeting.”   The General Election ballot on November 5th will include a plethora of races, including U.S. President, U.S. Senate, Governor of West Virginia, Marshall County Commissioner, and even the four council races in Moundsville. But not the OVRTA Busy Levy. “When I first decided to run for council it was because I wanted to serve the people and be a voice for the people,” DeWitt explained. “So, on the levy, it was easy for me. Give the people their voice.” The City of Moundsville is split into four wards and is represented by seven council members. https://ledenews.com/foia-request-city-of-moundsville-wv-re-ovrta-bus-levy/ https://ledenews.com/an-open-letter-to-could-be-bus-levy-voters-in-moundsville/ Read the full article
