Song Review: Susan Tedeschi and Dave Matthews - “Angel from Montgomery” (Live, Nov. 24, 2024)

Forget what you’ve been told; oil and water can, indeed, mix.

Need proof? Witness the pro-shot video of Susan Tedeschi and Dave Matthews, sans respective, eponymous bands, playing John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” during the Nov. 24 Soulshine hurricane-relief benefit show at Madison Square Garden.

She on electric lead guitar and sandpapery vocals and he on acoustic rhythm guitar and rubbery vocals not only counterbalance each other splendidly, Tedeschi and Matthews’ seemingly incompatible singing styles and vocal timbres create a lovely sonic sheen when blended on the chorus.

This left-field collaboration is surprisingly fruitful; plus, Tedeschi and Matthews’ “Angel from Montgomery” puts a fresh coat of aural oil-based watercolor on a stone classic that’s nevertheless faded from overexposure and an abundance of similar arrangements.
