inside are two books. one is a leather bound version of the art of war -- one of the books dazai was forced to read when learning game theory -- translated into greek. the other is a collection of stories from japanese mythology in its original kanji.

finally, a couple of poker chips from the casino fall out from the wrapping. they are just enough to cover dazai's tab that he's racked up for the past few months. because he's nice like that.

its sigma’s birthday

   “  Hm? What’s this?  “  Sigma wonders aloud to himself as he spots the package resting on his desk. He steps closer, picking up the note first to see if there’s any clues. Who- Ah. Silver eyes spot the scribbled crab and he gives a small chuckle. The note truly would have been enough - he never expected anything. But it was a pleasant surprise.

   Sigma takes care to unwrap the package with bright-eye curiosity. Books? He was always happy to accept books. Especially when he was pleasantly surprised to find one in Greek, in the language he had first known and to which his heart belonged.  ( Never mind if the book itself was what he’d read or not - he’d definitely give it a shot though. It’d be rude and silly not to. )  But his delight surges like a sparkler when he sees that the other book is on mythology. And in original kanji too!  Translations were good and helpful, but they weren’t the truest versions when there were words or phrases that couldn’t be translated the same. 

   He almost misses the poker chips that clatter when he goes to discard the wrapping paper. But both the weight and the fact they fall the moment he tries to lift the paper catches the angel’s attention. He raises an eyebrow curiously as he picks them up. What an odd addition. The thought exists only for a split second before he recognizes the fact it’s the amount that Dazai needs to cover the tab.

  The manager blinks for a moment before he allows a small laugh. So Dazai had been keeping track of his own tab after all. This was unexpected, but he pockets the chips with a small smile as he glances out the window and to the world below. 

   “  Thank you.  “  Words that reach no other ears other than his own, but he’s confident Dazai likely knows. He contemplates sending him a text at least - but perhaps that might ruin the whole point. After all, it had been just a note. And there were less direct ways to thank him later, like a free platter of the best crab at the casino or a drink next time the man visited. He had a feeling that might be more appreciated and speak louder of his gratitude than simple words.

the way dazai and chuuya start out this scene all lighthearted and smug but become serious once they realize nikolai is genuinely grieving. they both understand that feeling all too well and aren’t going to make it light of it, even with their enemy
