Letters Unsent, Part II

Edwin:

It’s really cold here, and really lonely. I know you can’t feel temperature, but if you could, you’d hate it.

 I miss you so much that it hurts. I hate missing you like this. And I wish SO MUCH that I had a pen and paper so I could write you this letter, the one that I’m just whispering to myself while Kingham and Litty sleep. I’ll just pretend like you can hear me. Maybe my voice will come to you in the wind or something. I used to think I could hear my dad’s voice in the wind, so… I’m just going to imagine that.

I hope you’re not missing me too much. You’re the one who said that no one’s ever really gone, so maybe you’re not taking it too hard that I died. I hope you’re not. But I also know you better than that. I hope you’re taking care of yourself, not working too hard or pushing people away.

This is stupid, but I think sometimes when the sprites are asleep I’m just gonna talk to you. Like this.

Um… okay, so I have to confess something to you. Remember that weird older lady that came to your office and told you that you and Charles could stay together? Made the redheaded Night Nurse your minder? Well… that was me.

There is only one way I can leave here. I don’t even know where ‘here’ is, but I’ve tried to leave and found myself, as a ghost, surrounded by freezing waters. But there is a way, and that’s if I have a corporeal form. That’s what Litty told me, anyway. So I did what you do, when you become Aunt Cindy. I disguised myself as The Principal and pretended to be the Night Nurse’s boss.

I wanted to hold you then. I wanted to give you a hug SO BAD. I wanted to squeeze you until your head pops off! But I couldn’t, because the Night Nurse was there, and it was a chance to exonerate you from Hell.

I’m smarter than I look. I know I’m not the bravest, but I’m a good opportunist. And you’re the one who told me that a good detective does what they need to to solve a case, so… I think you’d be proud of me.

And if I ever find my way back to you, I’ll tell you this for real.

Paper Hearts

I had forgotten how good paper doily crafts (like paper hearts and paper snowflakes) are for stress relief.

(They are, however, incredibly messy, which I had also forgotten.)

I made many more than I sent, so I'm going to post just a few more.

I completely free-handed all of these and made them up as I went, and not all of the hearts survived. This is so I remember next time, in order of difficulty:

Hearts (basic shape, easy at any size, simple to adjust)

Bow ties (cut in a triangle shape with the central point towards the fold, then adjusting the center knot on the fold to be square or rounded)

Femur or humerus bones (two hearts joined by a long rectangle on the fold — no problem)

Skulls (surprisingly easy, as long as they're not too small and on the center fold! Don't forget to cut gaps for the teeth)

Cricket Bats (I suspect this one is only difficult because I have no confidence in my ability to draw a cricket bat)

Cat face silhouettes (Difficult part is the whiskers, really)

Paw prints (More difficult than you'd think because of the toe beans. Resist the urge to mirror the beans; they will not cut out well at a small size through eight layers)

The Imperial Pacific Cannery crown (consider a simpler crown shape or go larger — also the crown on the sign outside the cannery is a simpler design. Plan connection points well.)

Dandelions (literally go big or go home here; consider flowers in profile rather than head-on)

Also, I did the doily trim with a single-hole punch (about 6mm, I think).

Wanted to keep the items a bit of a surprise but yeah, George has a Cat King bracelet and shows it in fairly high detail (THE KEYHOLE FOR THE LOCK IS A FISH).

My artist friend said that it would be a nice reference for any fan artists out there :) So an fyi there.

(also yes I love how much of a nerd George seems to be for the comics)

five things you'll most likely find in my fics !!

Not actually being fics: if you count my rambling tumblr posts about weird AUs or ideas that I have thought about too much but won't actually write as fics then they are 1000% the majority of my works lmao

There are OCs abound: my DBDA fics have Goo OCs, friends from when the boys were alive, extras from Niko and Crystal's lives, and almost everyone has family member OCs. like, one of my WIPs is so far literally all OCs. I might have a problem (/j bc OCs are valid and loved in these parts!!! OCs are how I started writing fanfic and do not deserve the hate they get imo)

If they're not OCs, then they're certainly in a new world: I swear I've done a band kid AU, Jane Austen AU, and trans!MC AU for literally every single fandom I've ever written for and I really wish I was kidding,,, I've only got one of those published (shoutout to Honor and Masculinity aka my zukka Pride & Prejudice AU) on AO3 but the band kid AUs are a constant on this blog lmao

There is perhaps too much attention to detail: unfortunately for me I have a serious case of must-research-everything. if you're ever wondering about a plot decision I've made (or an OC I've mentioned, or a character's name meaning, or the ancestry of any of the characters...) literally just ask--I can guarantee that I spent time wondering/researching that exact thing before posting. this is quadruply true if it's historical in any way, which makes writing for dbda even more fun (but also even more complicated) for me lol

They're unfinished: I swear I've completed all of four fics total in my 12 years of fic writing, once I get distracted I literally forget they exist... sorry to anyone who is waiting on an unfinished work of mine (you should 100% ask about them to remind me to write/update !!!)

not tagging ppl bc I'm out of the loop on tagging games so idk who has/hasn't been tagged but if you want to do this go for it!!!!!

fun fact: in looking over my own works again I've found that they're pretty evenly split bt smut, trauma, and fluff, (13, 14, 12 out of my 33 completed and WIP fics) so that's kinda neat

I’ve written whole papers on this I literally love this idea

like he sees them holding hands or kissing each others cheek or whatever and Charles is over here like ?!?!? (he knows abt lesbians and bisexuality and the like he just has no gaydar and I will die on this hill) VS Edwin is completely unphased

The other three naturally don’t know how to react to Edwin’s non-reaction so they scheme to try and make it sooo obvious that he has to notice (figuring he didn’t notice before) but all the plans hilariously fail multiple times over before Niko bites the bullet and confronts Edwin about it while they’re having their bestie time(tm)

Niko: Edwin, you know how we’ve talked about boys like like-ing boys? And I gave you that manga—

Edwin: Yes, yes. If you’re going to ask me about them—

Niko: No, no, I won’t rush you. I just wanted to make sure you knew that it’s the same for girls. Girls can like-like girls, too.

Edwin: Yes, I know all that. That was common even in my time, you know. Especially at boarding schools, in fact, my favourite cousin had such tremendous feelings for her classmate, she brought her to a family holiday. She was nice, from what I can remember of her. Why do you bring this up?

Niko, gobsmacked: Really? You knew girls who liked girls but didn’t think boys could like boys?

Edwin: …I don’t think you understand the circumstances at that time. Girls could have their beloved companions during school, but were still expected to marry a man and have families. It was… harmless, for lack of a better word. Meanwhile, men together… it was seen as a perversion, something ill-gotten in one’s very being…it signaled societal ruin. If a man could…have intercourse with another man… women’s role in society, and therefore the future of society, was threatened. … Of course, I know now that this is not the case, and that these.. feelings are natural and acceptable in modern society…. Why are we talking about this, again?

Niko: … I just wanted to ask if you had a problem with Crystal and I dating. We thought since you didn’t comment on it…

Edwin: Oh, right, yes. Truthfully, I am… unhappy… but not because of some such prejudice, I simply do not understand the appeal of Crystal. You and Charles both… but if she makes you happy, far be it from me to meddle with such things.

and then Niko hugs him and asks if it’s ok to tell the others, which he rolls his eyes and says I suppose but he’s being all playful about it. Crystal and Charles breathe HUGE sighs of relief when they hear that it wasn’t prejudice it was just Edwin being his usual self and not talking about emotions lmao

Ok so at women’s colleges in the early 1900s, girls having crushes on girls was pretty normalized.

So imagine if Crystal and Niko start dating, and fully expect to have to explain that girls can like girls and get him through his edwardianness

But Edwin thinks it’s completely normal, confusing them to no end
