Gavin held the tablet in his hands, fingers still lingering over the text that held the release papers for exhuming the grave.

"What do you think I should do?" Gavin asked Chloe. "You knew him."

"Are you thinking that you're not him?"

"Yeah, but…"

"Gavin," Chloe said. "Do you believe that what I've done before I deviated is me? I know it's not the same, but I think it might be… similar to what you're going through. My memories haven't changed, but my awareness of them has."

His grip on the tablet tightened, memories of Chloe shooting that other android that shared her same face that day, thirium splattering all over the walls and floors from the gunshot straight into android skull. The same thirium slowly draining from Chloe right now, flowing unseen in his own body, hiding the lie he was.

Yet, she said she knew him. And he's asked this question to Anderson, to Elijah, to even Connor, of all people, to answer who the fuck he is. And Chloe? He has memories of her, so many of them. She, of all people, like Elijah, should have the answer.

So why the fuck can't he get it?

"I don't know what to think, Chloe," Gavin said. "It's not fair. Someone trying so hard to make things work… And then he just… He just dies and leaves everything unfinished. Life's so fucking cruel."

And maybe that was the answer all along.

He couldn't accept the truth. It would've been so much better had he not known what really happened to him. No one was the wiser, right?

Except CyberLife. Fuck CyberLife.

"Who says he left it unfinished?" Chloe took his hand in hers. "Maybe you should see this as a second chance. I know that… how things got to this point wasn't right, but you're here. That you're still here means a lot." Chloe smiled, squeezed his hand. "Rachel and Henry did you a disservice, not seeing the potential you had. I'm sorry that they never got to see it. That Elijah never got to see it until it was too late. I hope you know that, even if it means little to you, I see it, Gavin, and I'm thankful that I finally had the chance to."

Hearing Chloe talk about Mom and Dad like that… Painting them in that not-so-great light instead of whatever Elijah programmed her to say. As if Chloe was actually having an opinion about them for once.

As if Chloe really was sincere.

A rarity where no one in this fucked up world would be real for once. Instead of some vapid concept of "caring" for someone. Of the thin veneer of just getting along for the sake of reputation.

"I'm sorry about what I said," Gavin said. "You don't believe that, right?"

"Is this about what you said before I made you leave?"

"How the fuck can you choose Chloe over your own flesh and blood? Chloe is nothing but a fake! A… A replacement! You created nothing but a monster!"

"You mean when he stopped talking to me? Yeah. I… I guess at the time I never thought it was possible."

Never thought it was possible for Chloe to be anything other than a machine.

Even after all this time, he couldn't bring himself to confront the fact that someone was dying right in front of him. Not for his mom. Or his dad.

"It's okay, Gavin," Chloe said when he took too long to say anything else. "You don't need to say anything. I can live a hundred years, but I would've regretted every moment if I never got the chance to say I'm sorry."

Oh I've waited *years* for someone to ask me fic recs and I shall deliver.

Ik you technically asked for canon compliant stuff but honestly I'm the complete opposite about characters, like I look at two completely different characterizations and I'll go "oh maybe he would say both of those," I'm just generally a massive AU enjoyer.

So instead of trying to sort and struggle and figure out what to recommend, I'll just throw a bunch of stuff your way and hope at least something works!

From there it explores what happens after in about a million words.

Sanction https://archiveofourown.org/series/2226099 is a series that also features the Markus-killed-Connor-in-church-but-he-survived-what-happens-now type story, the prequel has Connor & Carl interaction which while rare, is very precious to me in this fandom, and the sequel has some awesome angst about the Amanda takeover and it's potential consequences/meanings

Deviating and Solving Crime with 100% Human Detective Connor https://archiveofourown.org/works/29270769 is abt Connor being deviant the entire time but staying undercover as a detective in the DPD, super hilarious imo, loved the characterization of basically everyone, probably the longest 5 + 1 type fic I've read

Is an au fic of the game timeline where Connor is simultaneously deviant and machine, he has to delete memories of himself letting deviants go to hide his actions from cyberlife, and Hank is hostile at first, which is a fun part.

Reset https://archiveofourown.org/works/15118730/chapters/35054933 is a classic time-travel fix-it trope, 8 months after a failed revolution, Connor goes back in time thanks to Kamski and, well, fixes stuff. Sassy Connor is my beloved fr he's so awesome.

I'd probably have more recs (seeing as I have over 350+ downloaded detroit fics) and would know more specifically which ones were the more canon-compliant ones but the hyperfixation is sporadic and comes back every few years and it just came back very recently again, so I don't remember completely what all fics were about and how much I liked them (why did I not make summaries and list thoughts why past me why were you DUMB) but the ones I listed are hopefully very readable 👍

what's your top 10 (or maybe more) of the worst takes you've ever heard?

Eeh, I don't really remember them that much, most of them are just "Something is CANONICALLY [insert head-canon here]"

But you asked for it so here we go. Under the cut cuz yeah, not tagging this

1. Daniel and Emma were in love – I've seen this take once going through their tags and I think this is by far the worst one I've seen in the whole dbh. I hate it

2. Daniel and Emma can have some kind of a reconciliation, Emma can possibly forgive him. Fucking Christ, people refuse to empathise with Emma even for one second, that's the only explanation I can see as to why would someone say this.

3. Connor is "minor-coded"/literally a little kid. Enough said

4. Hank and Connor canonically have father-son relationships because he calls him a son in that one scene where he's fucking useless. Or probably even worse, when people reference the scene before Hank's suicide ignoring what the man is actually talking about and what aspect of Connor makes him think about Cole (— people don't come back unlike this plastic prick)

5. RK800, RK900 and RK200 are literally the same as siblings because they're all RK's, "sister-models". Shipping any of them with one-another is therefore incest. As if Tracis aren't identical in model and likeness, only being different in hairstyles.

6. All androids are aro-ace canonically (???) like people haven't played the game at all to miss androids kissing and hugging and being a romantically involved couples.

7. Only Markus and Connor can hack things. We have a scene with North hacking the road sign debunking that, for one thing. Maybe this take is not that bad like the others but I remembered it exists so I add it here

8. Connor was deviant all along / 60 is deviant because he was showing emotions all along. Like emotions = deviancy, or Machine connor is emotionless. I'm guilty of thinking along similar lines myself when I got here tho.

13 on my current account, so not a massive amount 🫣 I'll level with you fine people, I have been guilty of committing the sin of deleting fics (or entire accounts) when I decide I'm no longer proud of them... I've never done it with any of my DBH stuff, but I have done it for basically all other fandoms I've been involved in. I have since learned the error of my ways and to orphan rather than delete after losing some of my all time faves to other writers doing the same 💔

It's probably a toss up between stay with me. (DBH) or With Love, Phoenix Wright (AA) - although I'd argue that the latter doesn't count because it's a prologue to a longer story, so not really an 'ending'

I also wrote a DBH flavoured retelling of Carrie once—a fic request called GAVIN. For anyone familiar with the story of Carrie...yeah, you already know that doesn't end well. 😬

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

You see I love me some 'angst with a happy ending', so a lot of fics I commit to follow that formula. I'll say that More Than Our Parts has the happiest ending, just because of the sheer scale of Hell everyone went through in order to get there 🥲

I have received criticism on my works before, but nothing I'd say was intentionally hateful.

(Unless you're counting some of the reviews on my ancient FF.net account—but I was 14-15 when I wrote most of those stories, and I'm going to put up my hands and say the hate is 100% valid 🙃)

(Self promotion makes me uncomfortable one sec—) I would say my characterisation/dialogue and vocabulary? I have also been informed that I am good at 'setting the scene', creating for immersive backdrops.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Awkward sentence structure, spelling and grammar (I use a checker for that) and both over describing with lots of fluff and under describing with flat descriptions. I can never get the balance right 😭😭😭

I also have a nasty habit of reworking things constantly, as well as being overly ambitious with my ideas and then worrying the pay off is disappointing 🥲 meaning it takes several decades to publish anything.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

When I tell you I was balls deep in the Hetalia fandom during the latter half of my teens— I am extremely familiar with language switches in dialogue, does not bother me in the slightest.

19. First fandom you wrote in?

The OG Teen Titans cartoon from the 2000's 🫡 I embrace my heritage, but also will not be directing anyone to my ancient FF.net account as it makes me want to peel off my skin and jump out the nearest window.

(I have long since forgotten the log in details, so it will exist as an enduring time capsule to the time I was a moody teenager blasting MCR on the playground and complaining that no one understood me.)

Perhaps it's recency bias, but I am going to say More Than Our Parts. I poured my heart and soul into that story and I'm (mostly) very proud of it.

i was wondering if you could explain what this refers to? “I’d guess it was tied to the original Marla/Connor deviant route” it was the last bullet point on one of your unused concept art posts (other unused concept art included marla at the gilmour hotel and the apartment from the hostage originally being daylight).

i feel like i only know the bare minimum when it comes to cut content 😅 i know marla was a cut fourth protagonist, but was there significant interaction between marla and connor? or am i just misinterpreting your comment and you meant that both deviant!marla or deviant!connor had a different route originally?

on that note, is there anywhere you’d recommend looking to find more cut content? every time i feel like i’ve got a good grasp on what was cut, suddenly a new post comes along which casually talks about 40 things i had no idea were cut casually, as if it was common knowledge 😭

The cut Marla-Connor deviant route was a reference to a “hidden” concept artwork by Florent Auguy which shows Markus watching an explosion at CyberLife HQ (”Lime Corporation”), after Marla banished him from Jericho during “Crossroads”. The artist confirmed on his Instagram that Markus is the lone figure standing on top of the bridge.

The file of this artwork is labeled florent-auguy-detroit-city-revolution. This confirms that despite the unusual daylight setting, the destruction of Lime Corporation/CyberLife HQ took place during the revolution.

There’s another artwork to this scene. It shows Connor, with his weapon drawn, facing off against CyberLife security guards in a narrow entryway.

It appears that Marla would’ve offered Deviant Connor the detonator to her bomb, or at least equipped him with explosives after recruiting him — just like North offers the detonator to Markus if he remains leader of Jericho. In another unused concept scene, Marla observes the vehicle containing radioactive cobalt alongside a man who isn’t Markus (possibly Connor).

So there might have been another dead-end path for CyberLife HQ, where instead of breaking into the warehouse, Connor rides up the elevator until the end to level 31 — and if he took the detonator from Marla, he could set off the explosives instead of just immediately being gunned down by the awaiting guards as it happens in canon.

During “Night of the Soul”, there was a third option alongside Demonstration and Revolution called Hostages. There’s no text attached to the option and we know nothing about it, other than it existed. I think it might’ve been an option for Leader Marla’s and Connor’s revolution given its extremist implication and the fact that Connor is also a hostage negotiator. But that’s purely speculation.

As for where to find cut content, my sources are mainly the Detroit: Become Human game files and concept art. A good bunch of cut dialogue and choices were never erased from the files. I've written down a compilation of cut dialogue in this post.

I wrote three bigger meta essays about the scrapped model of Lieutenant Gavin Reed, about the hidden meaning behind Ferndale’s murals and about scrapped options for Kara and Alice to visit the coffee shop and pharmacy if they stayed at the motel in chapter „On the Run“.

Duality of Light - Chapter 4 Deleted Scene

I guess for those that followed me for the sake of my fic (and for myself for the sake of posterity), here's another snippet from a previous chapter I had cut lol. It's super rough and missing bits and pieces, like interior monologues and character actions and other stuff for plot development. But here it is, since I haven't updated my fic in a while (though I'm still very much working on it), and wanted to kinda at least make it look like I'm making progress, of sorts lol.

"Anderson, how the—"

"Reed."

"How did you get my address?"

"Personnel file. Anyway, I'm here to talk about what happened yesterday."

"Get the fuck out of my apartment."

"Not until I sort this out."

"And why would you want to do that?"

Anderson crossed his arms. "Because it's my job and unfortunately it looks like the commissioner wants to take away yours."

"The commissioner?"

"They want you taken in for identity fraud."

"Why the fuck would they do that? I thought it was just going to be a personnel reclassification."

"Yeah, it started out that way until there were things that weren't making any sense. And unless you want to keep your job, you better tell me everything since I'm the only thing in the DPD that's between you keeping your job or you being led away in handcuffs."

Gavin stepped away from the lieutenant, combing his fingers through his hair. "What do you want me to say?"

"The truth."

"Well, what part of it?"

"Did you know you were an android?"

"Fuck no. I'm just as upset about this whole thing as you are."

"I'm not buying it. You've got the resources to do such a thing like the goddamn dirty cop you are."

"I'm telling you the fucking truth, Anderson."

"Then you better start explaining, because honestly, I think this is just karma biting you back in the ass for all the shit you've done."

"So why the fuck are you here?"

"Connor. Bastard gave me a compelling enough reason to put up with the bullshit I knew was going to happen when confronting you."

"You want the truth? Well, you better find someplace to sit, because it's even worse than you could imagine."

"Just spill it, Reed. I don't got all day."

Gavin sighed. "I'm a fucking dead man. You know my accident? Yeah, apparently when everyone, including me, thought I miraculously survived that wreck, turned out that I… that Officer Reed died with Officer Stevens."

"So why the hell do you have his identity?"

Gavin paused. Should he tell Anderson about Elijah? Would that make his story even more unbelievable than it already was?

"I'm waiting, Reed," Anderson said. "If that's even your real name."

"What, people can't share names with other people now? I doubt you're the only Hank Anderson in the entire world." Gavin huffed a breath as he took out his phone, pulling up the files that Elijah sent him the other day. He handed his phone to the lieutenant. "Here, read it and weep."

"Shit, Reed."

"Yup. My thoughts exactly."

"Kamski? Gavin Reed, a Kamski?"

"Seriously? All that of that stuff, and that's what disturbs you about this mess?"

"No, I'm more shocked that of all the stupid theories I had going for why the fuck you're an android, my most outrageous one is the right one. It was the only one that would make any of this bullshit make sense."

"Well, shit, Anderson. You really are an investigator. Next we'll learn how to write our names."

"Shut the fuck up, Reed." He handed the phone back to Gavin.

"Damn. Kamski's a fucking piece of shit, isn't he?"

"Yeah, and now that we're on the same page, you know why I can't let any of this get out. Eli's dug his fingers into places he shouldn't have and now we gotta deal with the consequences and all I want to do is just fucking live my life and have things go back to normal."

"You know I'm going to have to talk to him."

"What? Why the fuck do you need to do that?"

"Because I know what you're capable of, and you might've forged those documents."

"Anderson. I did not make it up."

"So? Give me a single reason I should trust you."

"You only have my word."

"Yeah, not good enough. You claim to be his half-brother? Let me talk to him."

NOTES: So that's the end of the snippet. This was cut because, I dunno, the dialogue didn't really feel that great, and it didn't feel like the buildup to the reveal didn't feel that... impactful so I scrapped it and opted to try for the other idea I had for the reveal. That idea is what ended up making it into the actual fic.
