Children Will Listen: Fandom, Queerness in Shipping, and Why It's Not Funny

I'm not linking to it, but yeah, the cast of Supergirl took a header of the, "Crack wise about fandom ships," pier, at SDCC. ANNNNND, as of right now, still haven't learned to just say nothing if they don't know how to respond. I don't care if it was a gotcha, I don't care if you ship it or don't. I don't care if you didn't mean any harm. I don't care that obviously nobody on the show is homophobic/queerphobic because Greg Berlanti is a gay man, or because Sanvers is Canon. It's not about the ship, it's not even about fandom, or whether mistakes happen. It's that I don't believe most of the people involved realized why it was hurtful, let alone why it was harmful. And NO, YOU DON'T GET COOKIES FOR QUEER REPRESENTATION that is a fraction of reality. Tip: when people tell you you've hurt them, STOP TALKING. Even if you're 100% sorry, it was unintentional, you would never in a million years purposely hurt people...BLAH. BLAH. BLAH. Your feelings are not the point. You hurt people. And in this case, you hurt people not because you didn't take :a: ship seriously, but because you openly mocked, as a cast of a show specifically aimed at girls and young women, the idea of the lead, the hero, being queer. After an entire season where said lead has demonstrated unbelievable chemistry with literally everyone BUT the canonical heteronormative love interest. So, there are about eleventy bajillion reasons why people are incredibly upset, and they come down to about 4 points: •utter disrespect for the LGBTQ+ community. If you mock a ship because it's queer, you're not just mocking fandom, you're mocking Queerness. We're not a joke. We're not an afterthought. We're not an impossibility. A ship becoming Canon might not be in the cards, but the idea that a hero could be queer, is not a joke. •An inability to represent a show that has actually been good at handling its Canon queer characters and relationship, in a professional way. And these are professionals in what is, for them, a WORK CONTEXT. It's PR. There is no excuse for the CW/WB/DCTV teams not to brief their casts on how to answer this kind of question with sensitivity and tact, while still maintaining whatever narrative line the IP holder demands. If DC is not open to Supergirl being queer, fine. There are politic ways of saying that there are no plans at this time, but you love that people see her as a hero for everyone and what people see or take away from characters' relationships, is ALL VALID. I just did it, funny how that works. And I'm not getting paid to do it. •Supergirl is a role model in-universe, and actors have to accept that if you're in heroic roles, yes YOU are still an actual person, but you're interacting with people who NEED heroes, for whatever reason and whatever demographic, your audience needs heroes. If you're smack dab in the middle of one of the largest gatherings of your fan base, and you think it's funny to tell people who need heroes the most, the LGBTQIA KIDS that they are a joke to you, then you've lost the plot of basic humaning. •Children will listen. (Yes, Stephen Sondheim really did write a masterpiece with that song.) On one hand, you've got kids who maybe already know they're Queer and are scared or getting bullied or even have perfectly secure and loving environments where they get all the support they need, but you are telling them they don't have the right to ASPIRE to be heroes. You're telling them that people they admire think they're LAUGHABLE. For kids that are bullied, it's worse. For those who aren't sure or whose home environment is less than ideal for coming out, you've stolen something from them that you had NO RIGHT TO TAKE, and that's the idea that here, with these characters, they could be safe, be themselves, and be ok. If you think it's not that serious, try growing up queer. For queer adults, you've added one more thing we can't trust to a list longer than the San Diego Convention center or the Hall H line. (I'm not sure which of those is actually longer, but the list gets pretty long by the time you hit your 20s, let alone your 30s or 40s.) And for kids and adults who aren't Queer, you've just validated even their most infinitesimal bias towards not thinking that we're worth equality, or parity, or equity as human beings. Those that are actually bigots, the ones who say, "Faggot," or tell women in same-so relationships that we, "Just need the right dick," that they're right. That it's okay. People will listen. I by no means speak for every Queer person in the world, but I'm speaking TO every creator: you have to interrogate your own biases. You have to. Every PR team or Wrangler at cons: you have to prep your charges, you can't keep letting this happen because it's not harmless. And when it happens, that there is a failure to respond to a question in a way that doesn't denigrate human beings, you have to teach people that listening, hearing the PEOPLE behind the ship, behind the question, to hear that there is weight behind the desire to see these characters together, born of so little representation for people who are marginalized, that all too often HAVE to transform the text in order to see ourselves at all. You have to understand those things because we're still being attacked, jailed, murdered, ostracized, abused, denied legal standing and protection. We're still being denied CAKE for heaven's sake. There are Actual Legal Rulings being issued on whether or not it's legal to refuse to bake us cakes. And this all applies to every creator and producer of media. It applies to every question of representation on every axis and intersection. Ridiculing an audience invested in what you make for asking that their existence isn't anathema in media, is a really bad business decision as much as it's bad humaning. Listen when we tell you that you've hurt us, let us help you to do better, if you truly mean no harm. Then: DO BETTER. And interviewers, moderators, hosts, journalists: STOP WEAPONIZING FANDOM SHIPS, ART, AND FIC. How you treat the topic is often leading and/or designed to elicit negative responses. It's sadistic to everyone. Stop it.

9. Ramble about something current affairs related. This is very local and no one outside my country will care but this sudden increase “malay rights” or as i like to call it ‘malay supremacy’. I know it has been happening since the country gained independence and social media has made it even more obvious. But the fact that because the malays are the majority, they think they have the right over everyone else. Like, fuck. you don’t shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down.

1. What’s the otp that haunts you? Like, we all have sunken otps, but what’s the ship that still haunts you and will always lowkey haunt you because they were so amazing that you will never understand how they didn’t end up together? God damn it Ana. I feel like you’re doing this on purpose. Our OTPs are so tragic. But the fact that Dan/Blair ended so badly will haunt me till my dying breath.

2. What show has Completely Disappointed You? Like, started-out-so-good-how-did-we-end-up-here disappointed you? ahem all of DCTV ahem. 

3.  What book has gotten to you? Not necessarily your favorite, but a book that hit you in the feels or made you cry or rethink things in your life or you just genuinely enjoyed? The Man Called Ove by Fedrik Bachmann. It’s not my absolute fave but god the book just got to me. 

4. If you could sink one of your otps so that another one of your otps could sail, which 2 would you pick? And why? I would sink Emma/Killian so that Thomas/Grace could sail. Out of all my proper I-was-so-invested-in-this-ship otps, I feel the least connection to Emma and Killian. I think it’s because the whole keeping things from each other to “save” them got so tiring and I wasn’t as invested in it as I was. And Thomas and Grace deserves to be happy together. 

5. What’s your IMBED alignment type thing? What does it mean? Explain that shit to me like I’m really dumb cause I’ve never understood it. I don’t know what this is?

Sorry. Not really? I don’t know the Ravenclaw thing, parts of personality fits the house but others not so much. 

8. What’s your comfort show? Like, a show you can watch over and over again? Psych. Forever and always.

9. Favorite Queen song?  Somebody to Love.

10. Do you watch any medical shows (like Grey’s Anatomy or something)? What are your thoughts about it? jksladfhdsjafhjkdsafh NO. I have very, very strong feelings about this - and Emily knows all about them (mostly because she is a massive dick and keeps telling me about it and sending me videos and commentary). In saying that I tried watching Chicago Med and I quite liked it. But then the whole relationship issue got boring real fast and so I stopped. 

11. Who’s your Best Bisexual and your Best Gay character? Bisexual - god. ZANE ZACHARY GARRETT. I would die for him. I was gonna pick James Flint but I think he’s more pansexual Gay - MAX MAX MAX. Oh my god. Max is such as badass. She started as a prostitute and ended up controlling Nassau. And she doesn’t take shit from ANYONE. I love Max.
