This was easy to ignore when it was some dumb meme but press have reported on it enough for Cameron to respond so let's go over why James Cameron would not be a good choice for the Titan implosion
Tumblr media
(let's ignore the fact that his friend was on the sub)
Two things made Cameron uniquely qualified to direct a Titanic movie. First off the sinking is dramatic and chaotic. Passengers freaking out, the scramble for minimal lifeboats, cold water sliding in and pushing debris and disrupting apparatuses on board, it breaking in half, those in the water futilely waiting for rescue while they freeze to death etc. Horrifying stuff but damn exciting viewing that utilises Cameron's distinctive strengths as a genre action director: escalating the stakes and tension with vast scenarios that are naturally occurring but hit you out of nowhere and keep you gripped
The climax of Titanic is up there with Terminator 2 or Aliens: it's the Poseidon Adventure on acid and Jim takes every advantage of this opportunity
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Titan imploded in seconds on the first day according to most experts (the Navy likely knew this on the first day). There's no real rising action or tension unless you want to just make shit up.
The second? Well Jim loved the Titanic long looooong before he ever put pen to paper on the script
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guy's not just a director with a pitch-he's an oceanographic explorer with deep, intimate knowledge of that ship. He's not fascinated with the sinking, he's fascinated by the Titanic. He's been down there 33 times-he's BUILT his own sub! Guy's obsessed.
*HE DIDN'T EVEN WRITE THE FUCKING SCRIPT BECAUSE HE WANTED TO HE CONVINCED HOLLYWOOD TO FUND AN EFFORT TO DIVE DOWN TO THE FUCKING BOAT BECAUSE HE WANTED TO EXPLORE IT*
The Titan was a minor annoyance for him until it got his friend killed. So like he's not gonna have that passion or keen interest and also has a billion and a half Avatar movies to make. If you genuinely want this movie and are not just memeing he ain't your guy.
But also in general it'd make a shit narrative film. You know why there's a love story in Titanic? Because otherwise it's a laborious wait for the iceberg to hit or you have it immediately and forego all tension building. You need something to keep the audiences invested so they decided a love story. Jack and Rose are-of course-fictional but that's alright as there were fucking THOUSANDS of people on that ship it's easy to slot them in. The people on the Titan likely died Day 1 and died immediately. It was an incredibly tightknit space with five people. Not much narrative potential here unless again you entirely break from the story.
Tumblr media
(not the picture of those who died sans Stockton Rush but gives you an idea of the size two people are snug in there)
So the meat of the film is on building up or the aftermath. While the aftermath could have some potential that's not the story-and this is something at a glance it DOES have in common with the Titanic: the hubris and utter arrogance of the wealthy.
And this is where I say the lifeboats are short-sighted and the irony of it sinking on its maiden voyage (this wasn't The Titan's first trip) this is more an accepted truism of not only the elite fools who invested in it but the engineers and public: this ship was unsinkable. Everybody thought this.
Nearly the entirety of the deepsea diving community told OceanGate their submersible was heading for disaster.
Stockton Rush was not some prideful but short-sighted man blinded to the risks of his vessel thanks to like-minded peers. He was an arrogant, greedy fool who wanted to create a rich person's tourist trap one of the most famous graveyards in the world via the cheapest resources possible. His Randian-levels of self-righteousness made him fish food and led to the horrific death of a teenager. He fucked around and I doubt he took the nanosecond before his body was eviscerated to contemplate how he found out
And here's the final thing: this all probably works best as a documentary. A deep dive (sorry) into this company and their blowhardy foolish methods to goad rich idiots out of their money. The factors that led to this. But that isn't a narrative story even focusing on the hubris angle. Because there is plenty of hubris in the Titanic-oh is there a lot!-but there's also a romanticisim. Hence why romance stories work so well when adapting it.
The Titanic is a symbol of a bygone era-and a lot of this is rooted in classism but that last gasping sighs of Victorian-era innovation is something to be marveled at feeling like a culmination of the invention of the steam-powered train. It also examines this classism (which the 97 film explores-albeit briefly) in that there were third class passengers and most of them died. It reveals the beauty and elegance of the era but also the abuse and callousness of a time 2 years before World War 1 changed everything. It perfectly encapsulates the majesties and the tragedies of this late 19th/early 20th century culture which I think is why so many people are fascinated by it. Our world just isn't built like this anymore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only were the passengers fucking billionaires (so the class angle at least on the vessel is gone) the hubris is easy to sum up. We know this guy is a jackass-there's nothing as interesting following his jackassahoonery before the sub explodes compared to exploring the societal culture of a time long gone depicted on the Titanic.
So this isn't even a it's too soon thing-the first movie about the Titanic was made 30 days after it sunk and with one of the survivors (this was back when movies were made in five minutes at the budget of a cup of coffee). A narrative feature on the Titan is a boring idea and far far below the skillset of the director who newspapers are now saying should make it all because it exploded visiting a famous ship he made a famous movie about
Also, again, he's a bit busy making a fuckton of Avatar sequels I guess one person wants. That person being James Cameron.

Fresh from the Deep: MBARI scientists film an elusive dreamer anglerfish in 4K!
Tumblr media
Recently, MBARI researchers happened upon the elusive dreamer anglerfish (Oneirodes sp.). It was filmed with MBARI’s ROV Ventana, 781 meters deep in Monterey Canyon.
youtube
In 35 years of deep-sea exploration, MBARI’s ROVs have completed more than 7,300 successful dives and recorded more than 28,400 hours of video, yet we have only encountered the dreamer anglerfish 9 times.

The tragedy of the Titan’s implosion has brought to the surface our underlying fears of the ocean. Prior to this incident, the deep sea industry had 50 years of safety, something that scientists and engineers work CONSTANTLY on to keep up to the safety standards. Like the Titanic itself, safety concerns were ignored and people who didn’t have to die have died - and like the Titanic, it makes you realize that the ocean is the one in charge and anything that can go wrong will eventually go wrong.
My biggest hope is that this incident doesn’t discourage us from continuing deep sea exploration.

i bought subnautica because it was on sale, and i'm having a great time except for the fact that there's no in-game map and i don't feel like drawing my own
(also the sound design for some of the enemies is really good, and it's easy to get surprised by them while bumbling around lmao... at least getting crunched by alien sea monsters seems to just teleport me back to base with maybe an item or two missing from my inventory)
so i was like. well. all these wiki articles have coordinates in them, so someone is getting those from somewhere... i'll google! oh, here's an article that offers two different methods! okay, there's the keyboard command to bring up the console, good, i can use that, what's their other m--
their other method for mapping the game world is to make a few beacons and swim waaaaaay the fuck out to the edges of the map, then drop the beacons some distance apart from each other. then "just" triangulate based on your distance to each beacon!! now you have your very own homebrew coordinate system, yaaaaay
i mean i'm glad that they find that entertaining, because, like... okay, if you're replaying the game that could be a fun way to do things. but if you're just getting started, that method just raises a bunch of questions: how do i get the materials for the beacons. how do i swim all that way in the dark, because night will fall while i'm at it. how big is the game world anyway. is something going to attack me while i'm doing all this fucking swimming. (answer: possibly! this person even notes "you probably won't die" [emphasis mine] while describing this method... which is not exactly comforting.) why am i swimming away from all my actual gameplay objectives.
versus "oh, cool, i can get the coordinates of this one thing i'm looking for off of the wiki, then pull up the console to check my heading once i've set off".
i mean, different methods of having fun and all, but i was just like. my guy i'm just googling for how to figure out where i am physically in the game, i don't need to make my own fun in that way lol
anyway the game is fun but i can't stress this enough: you gotta play in the mode where food/water levels don't count, worrying about oxygen/getting attacked by something is enough to worry about during a game. also if you don't like the ocean or deep water, do not pass go, you're gonna hate this one lol

Jelly-like siphonophores astound us with their breathtaking beauty
Siphonophores (pronounced “sigh-fawn-oh-fours”) are colonial creatures made up of specialized segments that work together as one. They may not be familiar to most, but they’re abundant animals in the ocean. In fact, siphonophores are some of the most important predators in ocean ecosystems. Scientists have described some 175 siphonophore species. Most follow a similar body plan—a gas-filled float provides buoyancy, swimming bells propel the colony, and a central stem bears specialized parts for feeding, defense, and reproduction.
Tumblr media
Most of what we know about siphonophores comes from the broken bits and pieces of animals naturalists collected 200 years ago. Robotic submersibles are enabling researchers at MBARI the opportunity to observe these spectacular species in their natural habitat. Siphonophores and their more distant relatives, jellies and comb jellies, thrive in this world without physical boundaries. Back in the lab, we’re working to understand aspects of their biology in greater detail—from how they build their bodies to how they produce their stunning luminescence.
Tumblr media
In 34 years of deep-sea exploration, we’ve still just barely scratched the surface in understanding life in the largest living space on Earth. Each dive into the inky depths reveals something new and unexpected. Learn more about these delicate drifters and other amazing animals of the deep on our website.

I finished making new gear for a hypothetical Agent 4 storymode!
(Text on the back of the hypothetical box): As the head of security of Project Memverse, Agent 4 has been tasked to track down the Octolings still on the loose in the Deepsea Metro! Together with a recently reformed C.Q. Cumber, they will have to explore behind the scenes of Kamabo Co. to find and secure the victims of sanitization!
Using the Caught Shot, Agent 4 will have to subdue the Octolings that are still under Tartar's hostile programing! After that, they will have to transport their quarry to the goal using Containment Tank! Said goal is the Memverse entry room, housed in a modified train car. The SeaCURE.ity gear set will help them stand up against the immense pressure; both of the responsibility on their shoulders and the offensive launched against them by what remains of Kamabo Co! And of course the literal pressure, as they travel deeper and deeper into unknown waters...
(design notes under the cut)
C.Q. Cumber: The last two story modes have had a companion I thought it would be cool to use C.Q. Cumber! (Did you know it’s not just one individual?) C.Q. is one of the only characters with dialogue not to return in Splatoon 3, and he looks throwable! So, l would maybe make him be a portable bounce-pad, who returns to you when you jump on him. You could also make him the thing used for Broken-Armor Jump, if that’s a mechanic you’d want to return. He is wearing the hat from a plush zapfish!
Containment Tank: Based on a coffee machine, since the Spawners in Splatoon 3 are based on expresso machines! The jug that contains the octoling “ghost” is also based on a snow globe, since Octavio was contained by one in Splatoon 1 and 2!
Caught Shot: Based on a retro coffee grinder, to fit in with the tank’s theme! (Like the Splatoon 3 Hero Shot was based on a 3D printer (the fully upgraded one has a filament reel) and there were 3D printed monuments in Alterna.) The name is a play on their task, catching octolings, and hotshot, since Agent 4 is rumored to be the strongest in the squidbreak splatoon, and it's apparently also the name of an alcoholic coffee drink (I don't drink coffee or alchohol, so I didn't know that). Also following the naming convention of single-player shooters; Hero Shot, Octo Shot and Order Shot.
Earmuggs: Did you know the handles of mugs are called ears? Now you do! I included a cup-handle motif by the ears, and the springy thing is inspired by the edge of coffee presses.
Baristanorak: This is based of a coffee barista look, with an apron! The reflectors on the green part is meant to mimic the straps. I also kept the collar the same as Agent 4's canon outfit, since I think it's a big part of why I like their design. The wrist sweatbands are there to tie into the texture of the socks, and cuz I thought It gives the outfit a more recognizable silhouette.
Step-it-cups: They're actually just Luminous Delta Straps with the branding removed, don't tell anyone! Well, I guess it is keeping in tradition, since Agent 4's canon jacket is super similar to the Olive Ski Jacket, which was present in Splat 1 (and my favorite gear in that game).
