This is my first time participating in a tag game, so I hope I've done this right.

I have many WIPs of Far Cry 5 that I have been working on for the past year, all just mini or alternate stories. However, since it's WIP Wednesday, I thought, "May as well give a snippet of the main story you know?" It's nowhere close to ready, and there are still some things I'm working on, and not all of this is guaranteed to be in the final product, and in fact might get revised, but I think it will be nice to share a bit of my progress thus far.

So without further a-do, below is a snippet of chapter one of my main Far Cry The Silver Chronicles story, currently under the name Silva's Hope (though this name may or may not change in the future):

“I heard you’re not from Montana,” Nancy spoke again, her prying curiosity breaking through. It was as obvious as a voice crack, and the older woman’s unspoken questions were even clearer to the recently hired younger woman.

It was a behaviour she had noted a lot of folks in Fall’s End were doing ever since she had reappeared back into public view. It had been something she contemplated would happen.

Silva crossed her arms as she leaned against the red bricks of the Sheriff’s Department building, exhaling the intake of cold afternoon air.

“Who’d you hear that from?” Silva asked, grey eyes focused on the fading orange and blue of the afternoon sky. Hoping to catch an early star.

The clouds didn’t make it any easier.

“Overheard from a lot of folks, including Earl himself after he first met you,” Nancy answered, giving a weak chuckle as she adds, “I never try to eavesdrop, but the tea people spill openly is just too dang entertaining to ignore. Excuse my choice of words.”

Silva snorted in amusement, shaking her head. A smile almost tugged up, but she kept it grounded.

“They would be right though,” Silva told the older woman, “I’m not from Montana. Or America even. Immigrated here nearly a decade ago. It was a real shitshow, getting citizenship and all. But I’d say it was worth it.”

“You came over from Spain, right?” Nancy queried, her gaze genuine and endlessly curious. Silva found it rather easy to talk to the older woman, even if it was about the superficial information she’s grown accustomed with telling people over the years.

“It’s what I keep telling people.” And they continue to eat it up without question.

“But it wasn’t just you, though,” Nancy pointed out, tapping her index against her chin, and recalled, “I remember the talk of two girls that came here from overseas. It was all the folk around here could chatter about for a while. You and your sister, Elsa, wasn’t it?”

Silva’s breath soundlessly hitched to a stop at her younger hermana’s name. She hesitated in a reply, swallowing down the unexpected wave of sadness that clawed at her mind.

No, not here, she reminded herself, remembering who she was next to. Silva had initially thought she was over the loss, but it seemed the grief was still there. Subtle, but apparent.

Silva didn’t give it anymore concentration than she already had to. Not with eyes on her. And just to make sure, she didn’t dare correct Nancy on how there were three of them that came to this county.

“…Si, that was her name,” she replied steadily. A practiced skill. A required one she learnt. One she couldn’t live without lest the wolves smelled weakness.

“She was quite a smart girl, that one. With a smart mouth as well. Always kept Earl on his toes,” Nancy reminded, and Silva couldn’t help but let a stifled and weak snicker out.

Silva did remember those aspects about her hermana, and it tugged a sore spot on her heart.

Nancy continued, “But she was really beloved around here. Quite the socialite. Never far from gossip or the festivals. Always easy to talk to. Uh, no offence to your reserved character that is.”

“None taken,” Silva assured, for it was true. Elsa was the easiest to talk to out of the two, a mutually agreed plan when they first entered Hope County. Both understood each other’s strengths and weaknesses and worked together to take those traits into consideration.

“Mayor Minkler adored her, you know? Really helpful in organising events with him, which I’m sure he appreciated,” Nancy smiled at Silva, the warmth of the older woman comforting. Though something shifted, as Nancy took on a solemn expression, “My condolences for you loss. It must have been very hard, as her older sister.”

Silva stalled a reply, shoving away the resonating sadness down once more as she softly replied, “Gracias.”

“It’s an absence still felt throughout Fall’s End. Many people miss her, as I’m undoubtedly sure you do as well. It was a real shocker to folks when her floristry had been bought off.”

Silva didn’t look at Nancy. Especially not when the dispatcher’s eyes glanced to the dark-haired woman leaning against red bricks, about to ask a question Silva was all too familiar with by now.

“If you don’t mind me asking, why did you sell it?”

Silva glanced towards a familiar white sign down the road nearby. Despite how far the sun was already setting in the horizon, there was still enough light to make out the contents on the sign. Her grey eyes glared at the unique design of a cross, and the words etched beside it, ‘Return to the Garden’.

Not on my fucking life, she wanted to spit out. But more daringly, she wanted to trot over the sign, take it down, take it to Kamski’s Clinic, and dissolve it in acid.

Aware that Nancy was still next to her, patiently awaiting an answer, Silva simply replied, “I didn’t.”

In an interview released Monday, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said his country's stand against Musk—the richest person on the planet worth $239 billion per the Bloomberg Billionaires Index—should be an example to the rest of the world.

“The world is not obliged to put up with Musk’s far-right ideology just because he is rich,” Lula said in the interview with CNN Brasil.

Hundreds of people appear to have overcome security and stormed the National Congress building. Bolsonaro backers have refused to accept leftist Lula's election victory.

Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the National Congress building in Brasilia on Sunday.

According to news agency LUSA, hundreds of people invaded the building, calling for military intervention to overthrow President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Lula was inaugurated one week ago. 

LUSA said the group crossed a police barrier and climbed the ramp that gives access to the roof of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate buildings.

Saul Silva x reader - my reason

You weren’t a morning person, it’s why you were glad that your classes weren’t set till after lunch, and thankfully you didn’t have to get ready any time soon, so you sat in bed scrolling through your phone.

The phone chimed with a notification and you looked at it.

Saul: I know you’re awake, come outside.

Laughing a little, you dismissed the notification and carried on what you were doing only to get another one.

Saul: come outside.

You smirked, opening the chat as you read the messages, watching as he carried on typing.

Saul: if I can’t sit in bed you can’t.

Saul: I’ll come and get you myself if I have too.

Laughing, you set the phone down on the bed and stood up stretching, grabbing the bow you kept by your bed you went to the window and opened it, notching an arrow as you took a deep breath.

Closing your eyes, you opened them, and you found your target.

He was talking to the group of new years and you hummed, putting the arrow away you walked back over to see you had a missed message.

Saul: darling don’t ignore me, that’s not nice. I made you breakfast.

Humming you looked at the empty plate and went to get ready for the day.

Swinging your armour on, you got everything you needed and pocketed your phone and made your way outside, over to the specialists training ground.

This time you notched your arrow again while you were walking, pulling back and let it fly, watching as it embedded itself into the ground by Saul’s feet and he didn’t even move.

The first years jumped and you hummed, walking over as you looked in front of them.

“Fear will distract you, you need to take that fear and shove it down, you must always be ready for a surprise attack, always alert and ready to defend yourself or your team.” You said.

Saul nodded his head.

“Exactly, you need to be fully focused, one thing at a time.”

He carried on talking and you listened, grabbing his arm when he swung it at you, and you ducked under him, grabbing his knife you held it against his back.

“Use your enemies attacks against them.” You said.

He knocked the knife from your hand and pulled out a training sword, and you did the same, easily blocking his attacks.

“Fighting doesn’t have to be all about strength like Silva likes to think.” You said.

You ducked under him, and elbowed the back of his knee, knocking him to the ground and you stood behind him, hand on his forehead as you held the training sword against his chest.

You turned to the first years.

“It can also be about speed and accuracy. That’s what I teach, you will hone your skills with all weapons, but you will find one suits you better than others. Those of you who are more attuned to the bow will be taught under me, with a different training regime.”

The first years nodded and you flicked your eyes down to the teacher in front of you who wrapped his arm around your leg.

“Don’t even think about it Mr Silva, I have the upper hand in this fight and you know it.”

He rolled his eyes, pulling his arm away as he raised his hands and you patted his cheek a few times before taking a few steps away, putting your training sword away.

“You will trains for a few weeks before you train under me, but I am more then willing test you now if you feel ready.”

Saul stood up, putting his own sword away and pulled your arrow from the ground.

“This is deputy headmaster (Y/N), she will undertake a select few students for her training, others will remain on my schedule. Go, train.”

The first years quickly nodded and scurried away and Saul turned to you, handing you your arrow back and you took it humming a little as you tapped the end against his chest.

“You, Saul Silva, ate my breakfast.”

He smiled a little bit and pushed the arrow away with his finger and he walked over, crossing his arms as he stood in front of you.

He took the arrow from you and put it back and poked your forehead.

“You wouldn’t wake up.”

“I’m not a morning person, you should know that by now.”

He hummed, and started walking and you followed behind him, reaching into his pocket you pulled out a snack bar he kept in there.

“You’re supposed to be teaching.” He smirked.

“No, I’m supposed to be sleeping but my insufferable husband won’t let me because if he’s awake I too must be awake.”

“Is it so wrong your insufferable husband wants to spend time with you?” He asked.

“Yes. Yes it is.”

You stopped and watched Sky and Riven training.

“He’s getting better.”

“He needs to focus more.” Saul replied.

You rolled your eyes and nudged your shoulder against him.

“He’s still learning Saul, leave him be. He’s come a along way since last year and you know that.”

“He won’t be ready for anything.”

You turned to your husband, placing a hand on his chest as you looked up at him.

“Saul none of these children will be ready for anything, at this rate we’ll be lucky if one or two of them can help us if we needed it, but that’s why we’re here. To train them.” You said softly.

He placed his hand over yours.

“That’s why we need to be harsh on them. Toughen them up.”

“They are children Saul, they need to be nurtured, it is how we grow.”

He looked at you and he couldn’t help but nod his head.

He was a soldier, following orders to the letter, but you didn’t have those responsibilities. He was the soldier you were the speaker, you were the rational side of him.

So he nodded, grasping your hand lightly he kissed the back of your knuckles and looked at you.

“I’ll be a little easier on them, but they need this. You know they do darling.” He whispered.

“I know, but just go a little easier on them. For me?”

His eyes searched yours and he nodded his head, dropping both of your hands to his side, giving your hand a gentle squeeze before he let go.

You both carried on walking, his hand brushing against yours as you checked on all the students progress

Fun facts about my Deputy Silva Omar:

1. The reason as to why she’s going to do the Clutch Dixon missions (in spite of the Reaping) is to finish off the bucket list her deceased younger sister (Elsa) made.

2. Silva and Alexander (Jacob’s right-hand) have this casual frenemy relationship where their banter sound like they’ve been buddies for years (just with more veiled threats and promises to defeat the other).

3. Silva honest to god doesn’t know what a TV or most modern tech is and just nods and pretends to know what Pratt and Hudson are talking when they talk about Netflix and whatnot. (Adding on to this, the only type of phone Silva owns is the Nokia… which is useless during the Reaping since phone service is taken down).

4. Silva 100% did not pass her drivers test the first couple of times.

5. Lastly, Silva is pretty much adopted by Hurk and Sharky as an honorary cousin.

THE FIRST FUN FACT IS SO SAD THO HELLO !!! Like I love that she's doing that for her, tragic sibling plot lines are my favy gravy but ow ow my heart ow </3

Thailand sends deputy FM to Swiss peace conference on Ukraine

Thailand will participate in a conference in Switzerland on resolving the armed conflict in Ukraine, deputy Foreign Minister Russ Jalichandra will represent the country, Thai PBS reports.

Thailand was invited to the event because of its expressed support for all initiatives aimed at a speedy and peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict.

The summit to resolve the Ukrainian conflict without Russia will be held June 15-16 in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock. Delegations from more than 160 countries have been invited to the meeting, but less than half of the participants have confirmed their participation.

Many countries have refused to take part in the Swiss summit, arguing that without Russia’s participation any negotiations on the Ukrainian conflict are meaningless.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced his refusal, while Beijing rejected the invitation too. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stressed that both the Russian and Ukrainian sides should recognise the peace conference. In addition, China believes that all participants in the meeting should be represented on an equal basis and all peace projects should be discussed fairly.

Earlier, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will not take part in the conference on Ukraine in Switzerland. Representatives of Saudi Arabia, India and Pakistan declined to attend the conference.

14 June 2024: King Abdullah II held separate meetings with heads of state, government, and delegation attending the G7 summit in Italy.

His Majesty met with Algeria President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

At the meetings, the King renewed the call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and the protection of civilians.

His Majesty also stressed the need to coordinate and unify humanitarian response efforts seeking to end the catastrophe in Gaza, pointing to the conference held recently in Jordan for this purpose.

The King reiterated the importance of ensuring the permanent and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid into the Strip, as well as supporting UNRWA to enable it to undertake its vital role under its UN mandate.

The meetings, attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, also covered means of enhancing bilateral relations in all fields.

JOAQUIN COBALT (THE UNTITLEDVERSE)

I don't think the Sidekick fits Joaquin's archetype, but he likely wishes he was. Though in his own self-perception, he's trying to compensate his accidental existence by trying to be something significant, despite the fact he doesn't believe he's much of anything than an accidental miracle.

SILVA OMAR (THE SILVER CHRONICLES (FAR CRY 5, FAR CRY NEW DAWN)

Regret isn't the only thing Silva is filled with... trauma is a close second. However, ultimately I agree (mostly) with this archetype, unless I do a bit more research on Archetypes that is. But this result is pretty solid.

HAOYU ANABUKI (LIFE, DESPAIR & MONSTERS)

I think this mostly applies to Haoyu way down later at the completion of their arc, though before all that they're a selfish little twerp.

DISCORD, THE MAD KIN OF CARNAGE (AN OLD BALLAD OF CHANCE AND EMBER HEARTS TRILOGY)

I don't think this fits Discord at all. He is literally a walking wasteland, everything around him reverts to its most basic form (which is eventually nothing). He is as close as to the embodiment of the end as possible, but as well as a abhorrent denial rebirth. He just destroys things, lets it wither away horrifically. He's more close to the dirt than he is to flesh.

ELRAND BRANDT (A RADIOACTIVE CALAMITY OF LOVE, BOMBS & GORE (FALLOUT (1997))

I don't think Twilight is an aesthetic for Elrand. However, due to living in a post apocalyptic world, I think it would smell a bit like old burns. I don't know just my take on it.

MARU (THE UNTITLEDVERSE)

Being an Illusion Spirit, I think this aesthetic fits Maru very well. She is after all dead and does work for the Wicked, which are mostly made up of dead and evil spirits.

Lastly is the "Is Your OC a Good Parent Quiz" which dear god, I hope everyone from The Silver Chronicles gets a good result.

SILVA OMAR (THE SILVER CHRONICLES [FAR CRY 5, FAR CRY NEW DAWN])

Silva is definitely a good parent... I'd argue a great one even! Though she can be a bit overprotective but that's not abnormal considering all she's been through. She fought Paul and the Apostles of Zachariah to get back Persephone (even if that ended in tragedy), and went rogue to fight for a peace between Eden's Gate and the Resistance after given some perspective from Azriel. That's not even to mention everything she does for Azriel (and Mercy) when the Congregation of Adam's Guard arrive in Silva's Hope and the Highwaymen in Old Dusk.

PAUL YELLOWJACK (THE SILVER CHRONICLES [FAR CRY NEW DAWN])

In her adolescence he was. Paul was what Silva needed at the time; someone supportive, understanding, and loving. He raised her into the morally strong woman she is today. However, that's not to say his darker aspects which he develops more late in life weren't present. The thing about Paul, while raising Silva, was that he was sometimes overbearing, possessive/co-dependent and had a fear that she'd abandon him, something that worsens after he finds out she's alive (years after the Tumultite Massacre and answering "The Call" and founding the Apostles of Zachariah), and since he lost his morals over the years and had Zachariah of all entities as his guidance, he's not above breaking Silva down for her "betterment"... though he does realize he goes too far after murdering Persephone in retaliation of Silva dismantling the Apostle's operations and killing his fellow heralds. Even after his resurrection/reincarnation, he still cares for her, but is too trapped in his self-loathing to break away from his dark path.

KAMSKI NEON, THE GOOD DOCTOR (THE SILVER CHRONICLES (FAR CRY 5)]

I'd say Kamski's kind of a good parent, just an overprotective helicopter parent is all. I also believe that he's the kind of parent who'd be like "my opinion is correct and everyone else is wrong so you best listen to me". Irene, his blood daughter, likely never questioned this, but after her death and the Tumultite Massacre, when he reunites with Silva, they're basically the only family they have left, so Kamski pretty much pushes this harder onto Silva which is something they have to work through... as well as the pressure and the responsibility he burdens her with too. There's also the fact of trust, since Kamski goes behind Silva's back more often than not when they disagree on something and lies to her about it. So yeah, it's very "so-so" with me. He's good parent with good intentions however he does do some drastic shit since he thinks he knows best plus his "us vs them" attitude with him and Silva as the "us" and literally everyone else as the "them".

FATHER ADAM OMAR (THE SILVER CHRONICLES [FAR CRY 5])

"Bad Parent" and "Too Harsh" is an understatement when it comes to Adam; he's an absolute irredeemable evil hypocritical piece of shit who abuses and murders his children. Silva and Elsa were just the most recent pair out of who knows (me, I know) how many, and the longest surviving too. AKA more or less how things occur in the AUs especially with the canon divergences:

Far Cry The Silver Chronicles (Deputy!Silva, kind of main Far Cry 5 timeline) - Silva takes down (but captures and spares in the moment) John first, though she struggles with the morals keeping him alive and essentially lying (by omission) to her allies, trying to decide whether a) she should spare him and risk the wrath of the community she just gained after being alone for so long, as well as keeping a major player of Eden's Gate alive who (in her current opinion) doesn't really deserve to live, but could use as leverage against Joseph, or b) justifiably kill him for all he's done, but also incur Joseph's wrath/accidently help forward his (from her current speculation, since she sees him as a proxy to Adam Omar, a more vile prophet) plans to continue the Reaping, but gets to confirm to the residents of Holland Valley and the GFH that John is gone, but also live with the guilt and regret and shame of killing an unarmed and non-threatening opponent, as well as probably straining her relationships with Kamski (because he started liking John, if only a little bit) and Faith (because John's literally her brother who she cares about, despite how unreciprocated that care is)). Then comes Jacob, who she intends on sparing, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of bending her mind to his will entirely, showing she is stronger than that, and will not play into Joseph's hands. She attempts to carry his wounded ass back to her bunker where John should be (but Kamski took the younger brother to help him out on a little side quest), but they are both intercepted and separated by Oscar Lapis and his Enforcers, who return Jacob to Joseph as a show of good faith. Silva never really fights Faith, though the adopted sister is attacking her in the Bliss, but its more of Silva debating with Faith while avoiding Bliss attacks. And then later Silva goes rescue Faith from Omar's Guard, as well as get out of a about-to-be-bombed Henbane region. Her "final confrontation" with Joseph is really just her rescuing him from Adam Omar.

Far Cry The Judges Duty (Judge!Silva, Silva is the Judge in 2018 during Far Cry 5) - Silva "takes down" Faith first, then they go get John from Paul and the Apostles, Jacob from Malvolio and the Deserters and lastly Joseph from Adam Omar.

Far Cry The Harbinger's Salvation (Alive!Elsa and Harbinger!Silva, the former is the morally-grey protagonist while the latter is a brainwashed victim in an antagonistic role) - Elsa manages to take down the Father and his Heralds rather quickly during a "peace meeting" by blackmailing them to help her kill Paul and the Apostles and save her sister who is currently a nigh-unstoppable killing machine conditioned to slaughter everyone in the county.

Far Cry El Industrial's Reign (Industrial!Silva and AliveBabyGirlSeed!Azriel, Silva is older than most iterations (being 37) and the leader of the surviving Tumultites and the adoptive mother of Azriel (aka Joseph's alive daughter, who is 20)) - Silva and Azriel capture John first, then have trouble with Jacob and Faith, before Alexander saves Jacob from Enforcers and Silva finally convinces Faith to come with her before Oscar and his Enforcers come, leading many people out of Faith's Gate but leaving the Angels behind to distract (and overwhelm) the Enforcers. Joseph and Adam's words towards Azriel do not help her mental state and she captures both Joseph and Silva, and the ending of this encounter can either go a nice bittersweet or really sad bittersweet.

Far Cry The Reverend's Rule (Reverend!Silva, Silva is combined with the Curse and becomes Phillip's new prophet) - Sylvester (soon-to-become Silva) recruit Faith with the help of the Curse and Phillip, then manage to either recruit John or Jacob, before attempting to get the other brother who solidifies his loyalty to Joseph, who loses most of his flock to Silva, John/Jacob and Faith's efforts thanks to Omar's Guard' arrival and Phillip's guidance.

Far Cry The Apostles' Rise (Apostle!Silva, Silva joins the Apostles of Zachariah) - Recruits a spying Faith first before attempting (but failing) to kill the other three. All of their survivals depends on the oneshot story.

Far Cry The Scavenger's Promise (Scavenger!Silva and Immune-To-Bliss!Azriel, Silva is 35 and works with any contract/odd job she can get from Gavin, and is hardened by the death of a 9-year-old (different from the canonically 5-year-old) Persephone, but ends up accidently adopting Azriel, who is 11-years-old and not related to Joseph) - Silva saves Faith from some Enforcers who framed (and about to execute) the sister, and goes to help Jacob and John out (their survival is up for debate), but are unable to get to Joseph in time as he is callously killed by Adam Omar while attempting to protect Azriel.

Far Cry The Inquisitor's Chime (Inquisitor!Silva, Silva is apart of the Yellowjack Mafia family because Omar's Guard murdered Persephone and Irene (the latter canonically died in earlier timelines, and no where near Persephone's death) instead of Paul and the Apostles) - Silva blackmails them into helping the Mafia and the Reaping does not happen.

On the evening of Jan. 8, U.S. President Joe Biden took to Twitter to condemn an invasion of government buildings by a violent mob. Hours after a crowd vandalized the National Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace in Brasília, the official @POTUS account bashed the “assault on democracy and on the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil.”

It all felt like déjà vu. Almost to the day, Brazil was seeing a remake of the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol, which sought to prevent Congress from certifying Biden’s 2020 election victory. A day after Brazil’s insurrection, Biden called new Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to convey his “unwavering support” for the country’s democracy. The two decided to meet in Washington in February and are convening on Friday.

Now, together at the White House, Biden and Lula must face the uncomfortable reality that the two insurrections that sought to overturn their respective election victories are parts of the same plot. What’s more, Brazil’s iteration would likely never have occurred had the United States not experienced what it did on Jan. 6, 2021. The two attacks were in many ways fueled by U.S. social media companies’ reluctance to police disinformation related to the election results—and Brazil’s was empowered by the U.S. justice system’s failure so far to hold former U.S. President Donald Trump to account. Though Biden was not involved personally in either riot, as U.S. president he has a unique responsibility to help Lula combat anti-democratic forces in Brazil.

Trump’s Big Lie—which falsely claims that he won the 2020 U.S. presidential election and more generally that recent U.S. elections have been riddled with fraud—did not start after the 2020 election. Trump has promulgated the narrative since 2016. “I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” he tweeted just 19 days after being elected via the Electoral College (but losing the popular vote).

Since the 2021 insurrection, Trump’s claims have emboldened far-right politicians all over the world. In June of that year, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tried to undermine a vote that gave power to the opposition by saying, “We are witnessing the greatest election fraud in the history of the country.” His narrative included a conspiracy about a so-called deep state and calling the media a “propaganda machine enlisted in favor of the left.” That same month, Peruvian presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori promoted her own Big Lie about election fraud while she delayed conceding to Pedro Castillo (who would later be ousted by Peru’s Congress).

But nowhere was Trump’s Big Lie replicated as eagerly as in Brazil. Former President Jair Bolsonaro copied so many of Trump’s rhetorical tactics to undermine trust in elections that they sounded almost like a Portuguese-language dubbing of the U.S. president. After his inauguration in 2019, Bolsonaro claimed that he had won the election by a bigger margin than he had in reality. And ahead of last October’s contest against Lula, Bolsonaro’s administration promoted—and then pushed for a behind-the-scenes investigation of—bogus claims of widespread fraud in Brazil’s electronic voting system. Bolsonaro’s allies even made a last-minute attempt to halt the Oct. 30 runoff vote by claiming that Brazil’s electoral court was preventing radio stations from airing the same number of ads for Lula’s and Bolsonaro’s parties—a Brazilian version of Trump’s “Stop the Count.”

It’s no accident that Brazil’s insurrection so closely mirrored the one in the United States. The far-right movements in the two countries are deeply interconnected.

Ties between the Bolsonaro family and Trump aides date back to 2018. That year, Eduardo Bolsonaro—the former president’s third son and a member of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies—met with former Trump strategist Steve Bannon and soon after became the South American representative of the Movement, a coalition of far-right extremists in Europe and Latin America that Bannon had founded. In a September 2022 interview with BBC News Brazil, Bannon praised the then-Brazilian president’s expertise in engaging his supporters through social media and said both he and Eduardo have “charisma” that is lacking in U.S. politics. He also acknowledged that he spent a lot of his time “talking backstage” with the Bolsonaros during the 2022 Brazilian presidential campaign. Two of Bolsonaro’s other sons, Carlos and Flávio, are also deeply involved in the former president’s political enterprise; Carlos manages his social media profiles.

Since Bannon and Eduardo Bolsonaro met, Eduardo has spent a great deal of time in the United States, meeting at least 80 times with members of the U.S. far right. He was even in Washington in the days before and after Jan. 6, 2021. The grounds for his visit are still not clear; at the time, the Brazilian Embassy in Washington said the foreign ministry was not aware of the trip. While in Washington in January 2021, Eduardo met with Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, as well as MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, who is reported to have suggested that Trump should declare martial law to stay in power.

The elder Bolsonaro, for his part, did not condemn the attempted U.S. insurrection, stating that “there were people who voted three, four times, dead people who voted,” which is false. He used Trump’s Big Lie to say Brazil needed paper ballots in its own elections, otherwise “we [in Brazil] will have a problem worse than the United States.”

After Bolsonaro’s family and close allies helped spread Trump’s Big Lie, key actors in the “Stop the Steal” campaign also planted the seeds of mistrust in Brazil’s electoral system.

In August 2021, Eduardo was a keynote speaker at an event Lindell hosted in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where the businessman promised he would reveal proof of election fraud in 2020. (His attempt to do so failed miserably.) On stage, Eduardo attacked Brazil’s electronic voting system, saying, “You dial the number of your candidate and pray to God that your vote will be correctly counted.” Bannon, who was sitting by his side, then claimed that the 2022 Brazilian election would be “the second most important in the world and the most important of all time in South America. Bolsonaro will win unless it is stolen by, guess what, the machines.”

Bannon was among the first to call on Bolsonaro not to concede to Lula last October; he did so on a Gettr livestream just hours after results showed Bolsonaro’s defeat. Bolsonaro never conceded—and remained publicly silent for 44 hours after the election results were announced while his supporters violently blocked roads and camped in front of military premises. He did not condemn them and left the country for Florida two days before the end of his term.

Now, as Lula and Biden meet, Bolsonaro remains in the United States. And with the news that the former Brazilian president recently applied for a six-month U.S. tourist visa, his presence is becoming more uncomfortable for the U.S. political establishment. Several House Democrats have called for the Biden administration to order Bolsonaro out of country, as more information surfaces about his role in a wider plot to subvert Brazil’s election. While Brazilian authorities have so far said there are no grounds to request Bolsonaro’s extradition, recent developments in ongoing investigations into the Jan. 8 attacks have placed Bolsonaro at the heart of a plot to overturn last October’s election results.

Apparently seeking to make a comeback as the darling of the extreme right, Bolsonaro spoke at an event at a Trump golf course in Miami last Friday hosted by the far-right organization Turning Point USA. Some of Bolsonaro’s most prominent Brazilian supporters, such as YouTuber Allan dos Santos and businessman Paulo Figueiredo—once a business partner of Trump in Rio de Janeiro—are also based in the United States, engaging in Portuguese-language disinformation campaigns aimed at Brazilian audiences from U.S. soil.

The Biden administration has a responsibility to help fight ongoing threats to Brazil’s democracy. Many of the people spreading disinformation in Brazil are based in the United States—Bolsonaro included. They have also mostly spread their lies on U.S.-run social media sites—platforms that suffer a lack of oversight due to Washington’s failures to pass substantive tech regulations. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the continued failure to hold Trump legally accountable for the U.S. Capitol riot sends the message that anyone can use the Big Lie as a valid political strategy and get away with it.

The Biden administration must take a decisive stance on these issues. U.S. and Brazilian authorities should coordinate on not only Bolsonaro’s status but his supporters’ actions in U.S. territory. One U.S. law makes it a crime to organize or help an attempt to overthrow a government. But it is unclear whether this could apply to Bolsonaro and his followers. Can repeating a false claim about the legitimacy of an election be framed as an attempt to overthrow a government?

The White House should also pressure U.S. social media companies to better moderate foreign-language content and engage with foreign authorities on how best to curb threats to democracy in other countries. Research shows that Silicon Valley has failed to properly combat election-related disinformation in non-English languages. The bulk of Meta’s 2022 election-monitoring resources, for example, were geared toward the U.S. midterms, despite the Meta-owned WhatsApp having been central to the spread of election-related falsehoods in countries such as Brazil.

Finally, the U.S. Justice Department’s investigations into Trump must move forward. While Biden has rightly stayed away from the investigations to avoid the suggestion of political interference—and should continue to do so—their slow pace has cast doubt on whether justice will be achieved at all, particularly as Trump campaigns for the 2024 U.S. presidential election amid growing calls to “move on.” To the outside world, the message so far is that the main culprit of Jan. 6, 2021, is getting away with it—and political forces in Brazil are watching attentively.

The Brazilian justice system, by contrast, has moved more swiftly in the wake of the Jan. 8 attacks to combat anti-democratic forces. The day of the invasion, Lula ordered federal security services to intervene in Brasília. A few weeks later, Lula fired the head of the army who resisted punishing a military officer with close ties to Bolsonaro who is under investigation.

These steps notwithstanding, bilateral collaboration between Biden and Lula is essential to protect democracies worldwide. Today, the two leaders’ response must be strong and their message clear: We will not let the Big Lie become the new normal. Democracy will win.
