Notes to my readers:  I can’t believe I finished the 4th VOS fic before the 3rd one.  I’m considering reordering them, but...the 3rd one starts slightly before the 2nd one ends! Anyhow, this is your gentle reminder that Designs and Persuasions and Every Day Is A Winding Road are two halves of a story arc. There are only 2, maybe even 1, chapters left in Winding Road.

The story that follows both Every Day is a Winding Road and Designs and Persuasions will be called Recovered Light.

I love libraries.

I'm browsing the WWI shelves (as you do) and notice a very old book about the war. I glance at the first pages that talk about how one day the war will be over and we'll look at this place and not see any signs of the battlefield.

Then it hits me. And I check the publishing date.

This book was printed before the war's end. Not written. Printed. The physical object was created in 1918, while the war in question was raging and the end was as yet uncertain.

Now I'm standing on the other side of the apocalypse, with this physical link to that era in my hands. I'm living proof that the war did end and life did go on and we can all look at the end of the world as a long-ago memory.

Reading old books is cool enough, connecting our minds and hearts through the ideas of people who lived long ago, but there's something extra profound about holding a copy of the book that comes from the time that it was written. It's a physical link between the past and the present connecting me to those long-ago people. A piece of the past come into the future that gives me the chance to almost take the hand of some long-ago reader, to hold something they could have held, connecting not just mentally but physically to their era, a moment of connection across more than a century.

Excuse me while I go weep.

(I’m sorry Cos.wave fans, but even before Ravage died in IDW canon to make me grouchy about it, the first thing I noticed about Cosmos and Soundwave was that Cosmos was constantly questioning Soundwave’s motives.)

We are getting close to the end of this third split arc. There were supposed to be 30 chapters in each of the arcs but I think there might be 31. People keep having conversations that they shouldn’t be having in the middle of an interstellar crisis, and since the bullets aren’t actively flying, I have to keep letting them.

GOD I love my career path BUT ok like. I spent today at an academic conference on epistemic injustice and I LOVE ACADEMIC CRITICISM. I LOVE ACADEMIC THEORY. The problem is I don't want to BE an academic, it looks like it sucks and also I like to have work with clear material impact. but today has scratched an itch I rarely TRULY get to hit and I want ittttttt. I love PHILOSOPHY I love SEMIOTICS I love EPISTEMOLOGY I love THE PRODUCTION AND COMMUNICATION OF IDEAS it is 90% of what I am thinking about at any given time and nobody outside academia is nearly as interested in it as I am, or if they are then we're using mutually incomprehensible frameworks/language.

academia is like welding, wrestling or bricklaying. I want the opportunity to learn the skills and do it as a hobby but I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT want a career in it and the only ways to get at these things seem to be as vocational paths 😭

Minor Complaint: Capitalism took away the story-telling of captions/subtitles.

I mean, there's often incorrect captions. Words that are missing, sentences that are shortened, rewording to make things cheaper.

But where's the descriptive punctuation? The accurate word choice fitted with creative formatting?

I'm reminded of a well-known series that creatively described sounds, and how it was described as a cool and interesting thing.

And I wonder: How many captioners want to tell the story accurately? How many want to enhance the story through creative grammar? And yet, there's no chance to share that because they'll get sacked if they do?

It's not just a deafness issue, but seriously? Why don't we caption-enjoyers get to enjoy the creative direction the vocal-enjoyers get to experience?

It's frankly unfair (and I blame capitalism)
