This started off as angsty phantom thoughts based on another post I saw and it turned into a kinda fic..
Written at 2am on no sleep, bare with my typos. It's not proofread 😎
Phantom thinking he was a temporary replacement. Not letting himself grow close to anyone even if he desperately wanted to. He was always told be was going to be replaced back with someone better. Someone who belonged in the pack. That someone wasn't him.
It hurt. He's been wanting, craving for a pack. For a family. He can't get attached though. It'll only lead to him being sent back to the hellscape of the pits that much harder when the time comes.
When the tour comes to an end he did end up getting attached, namely Dew, Rain, and Swiss. The last few nights on tour he hides away alone in his bunk when he'd usually be curled up into one of their sides. He's trying to distance himself, he knows how badly this is going to hurt. Bring sent back to the pit after making such close bonds.
He cries silently, small whimpers and longing to be held by his pack, his lovers. It hurts, knowing they never truly cared for him. He's a replacement after all. A stand in for the one they truly loved. He was allowed to think it was real for awhile right? To think all the time they spent with him was truely for him, that they loved him, wanted to bring him pleasure, bring him care. Even if he knew it wasn't for him, he sucked it up like a sponge and gave so much of his heart back to them.
Now, he felt empty. Like a painful void was in his chest. He'd he sent back, cast aside never to be thought of again once they were back. They'd have their quintessence ghoul again. The real one, the one they truly wanted.
He wished he spent one last night with them. Even if it would be selfish of him. He wanted do badly to feel their love one last time. Pretend it was for him. So the very last night once they were asleep he crawled into their bunks the three of them already together. A blank look on his face, sad sunken eyes from a lack of sleep, and painfulled sobs as he crawls against Swiss' chest, allowing himself to be swalled by his large arms, a smaller heater of a ghoul pressing against his back, a ice cold hand relaxing around the warmth and taking his hand.
He feels tears swell into his eyes once more. Holding back a hiccuped sob not wanting to wake them. He just needed this. Needed to feel them one last time. Imprint the feeling of their love onto him before it was transferred back to the true one they wanted.
He silently cried for the whole ride back. The early morning approaching as they got closer back to the Abbey. When they stopped he had to bite into his hand to keep silent. When Papa came onto the buss to get the ghouls inside he pretended to be sleeping, hood up over his face and eyes. Small mumbles from the ghouls waking around him.
Swiss' arms never leave from around him.
He feels himself being lifted into Swiss' arms. A soft sleepy "Common baby,," as he's carried inside. He tenses hearing the two that stayed back. Aether, and Sunny yelling out. He holds his breath when he feels Aether hug Swiss, whispers around him, feeling a large hand press into his back makes him fall boneless. Soaking in the feeling of Swiss one last time. Aethers going to take him form him. Send him right back where he belongs.
But it never comes.
The hand leaves, and there's a low purr in Swiss' chest as he presses a kiss to Phantoms head, all of them walking insidle. He waits, bracing for impact with the cold stone floor when he hears a door open, but instead hes met with a soft bed that smells faintly of Swiss.
There's sleepy murmers he can't understand, but he can smell Dew and Rain closeby. Soon enough, he feels the bed dip, and he's behind pulled against a chest, Swiss', and there's a blanket being pulled over them.
A moment later joins a warmer ghoul, one that curls Into his side and wraps their tails together, another dip after and a icy hand is going through his hair gently before it settles away next to the heat.
There's one more, a heavier one he isn't used to, that he hasn't smelt often. He realizes soon enough it's Aether. A arm being wrapped around all four of the ghouls there. A symphony of purrs is heard within minutes. Every ghoul there sleep, pleased, and relaxed.
Once he's sure they're all asleep, he pushes his hood back and looked around at them all, debating. He should leave. Hes taken too much. They don't want him they have their quintessence ghoul back why is he still there?
He sits up slowly, trying to untangle himself but a large hand stops him, a terrified look shooting over to where Aether lays. He gives him a sleepy smile "Lay back down Magna Stella. You're not going anywhere." Phantom looks at him confirmed "I.. I'm being sent back in the morning..?" He whispers back, Aether simply shakes his head
"You're not going anywhere love. You're pack now, and they love so dearly. Sleep now, you needant be worried. You're staying right here." Phantom doesn't look as if he believes it. Maybe it's a joke, some sick joke to keep him having hope. But the sincerity of how Aether looks to him, he believes him
Tears well into his eyes, a small hiccuping sob escaping him. Aether gives a soft smile "You're safe here. You're pack. You're loved, and you're home."
He's putty against Swiss' chest, the worry and stress disappearing letting into his exhaustion. He sighs, closing his eyes feeling each of them there. Their different energies they fill him with. He's asleep in minutes. Finally able to relax and sleep without worry. For the first time ever, he feels loved, feels like pack, and feels like he has a home.

Every one likes to think that Mountain is this big serious reader who only reads old ass Greek/Roman texts, or heavy thinking books. Jokes on us though, dirt boy loves YA. Dew makes fun of him for it, but its not his fault that the Hunger Games series is cool. Its not his fault that he's got a hunger for silly human rebellions.
At first he hid it, knowing the connotations. But now? He doesnt care. He reads them in the common room, and as much as Dew loves to roll his eyes at him, he loves to listen to Mountain talk about what he's reading. It's tooth-achingly sweet really.
no one acknowledge the fact that dew has started to really get invested in the handful of stories mountain has gotten through.

I don’t think Dew knows how to read
He hides it well, He’s memorized a a handful of words and he knows his logos so he gets by well, but ask him to write anything down and he won’t do it, complaining of bad handwriting even though no one has actually seen him write.
Aether found out about it when he was reading some books out loud to some of the younger siblings/ghouls and Dew popped in to watch. He was entranced by the story, and when Aether asked why he never read it before Dew just got flustered, saying he never had time to read.
However after that day it became nightly routine for Aether to sit against their headboard with Dew snuggled against him, listening to Aether quietly read aloud all his favorite stories.
