Hi, let's talk buddie stats for the second half of the season because I know yall are waiting for it lol (other posts about this can be found here and here, and here you can find what I think of these numbers)

The rules for my scenepack supercut are that I keep a scene in full if they are interacting, but if they are just standing next to each other I cut around them to just have the times they are in frame together. This cut is different from the cuts I am making available because they are a bit chaotic to watch when doing the cuts around them, for those I am also adding scenes they are talking about each other and cutting the calls that they're not doing anything relevant to their plot and basically trying to make it a more smooth viewing experience. For 8b in particular, I cut around them for Bobby's funeral and the call in the finale, but I did keep the firehouse scenes in full.

Now that's all out of the way, 8b cut is 48 minutes and 24 seconds for 7 episodes. That puts our average screen time per episode at 6 minutes and 54 seconds. The full season 8 cut is at 1 hour and 50 minutes, with 15 episodes and an average per episode of 7 minutes and 20 seconds. To be fair, 808 and 9 have around 17, so that did mess with the numbers, also, the show has 8 episodes with over 10 minutes (201, 204, 406, 613, 801, 805, 808, 809) and 4 of them are in s8, so they had a couple episodes with a lot of them, but still a pretty high average. This is the 3rd longest half-season, losing only to 2a and 8a. The show did keep up with my crazy theory I explained at the beginning of the season, where every episode the 2 of them were in had at least one Moment.

The full screentime of the show is 8 hours, 37 minutes, and 10 seconds in 103 episodes, which brings our average screetime for the show up to 4 minutes and 59 seconds. Before the move to ABC the average per episode was at 4 minutes and 23 seconds. The average on ABC is 6 minutes and 55 seconds.

arcane s2 act 2

so my main criticism of act 1 was that everything felt rushed. that has not gotten better lol

i knew going in that two seasons -- of nine episodes, and short 40 minute episodes at that -- was probably going to be too little. and it is. well. what can you do, i guess. i'm glad this isn't my number 1 fandom interest the way it was in 2022 because if it were i'd be much more bothered lol. many of the beats we're hitting are beats i like on paper but we are blitzing through them so fast they have no time to breathe or sink in before we're onto the next one.

also i respect the huge amount of effort that goes into creating an animated series that looks the way this looks, but these episodes are so short. the runtime is 40 minutes and five of that is credits and another five of that is our obligatory stylized music video. it's just too little time to dedicate to a large ensemble cast and a complex plot. it sucks to be watching the final season of a show and realize you haven't seen [Major Character] for entire episodes, or entire acts (!). outside of jinx and ambessa, it feels like everyone's fave is getting shortchanged on screentime, some more than others. with only three episodes left it's hard to imagine they'll manage to resolve everyone's arc and all the outstanding mysteries and bring everything to a satisfying conclusion. fans freaked out when they first accidentally let slip that after s2 they were moving away from these characters and fans were right. womp womp

"jinx is a symbol of resistance" is one of those things that i didn't feel they entirely set up. sure, she has pushed back on piltover -- but every time she has, piltover has cracked down even harder on zaun. there's really no zaunites who resent her for that? hm

isha is a character i struggle with because i thought everything about her was too on the nose in act 1 and then we had open act 2 with jinx stating the thesis aloud to the camera. "gee you remind me of my old self powder. i wonder if this is how silco felt about me, powder." lol

i was DARING the show to have vi flashback to punching powder after she hit isha lmaooo. impressed they resisted

whatever tho i did enjoy the jinx-sevika-isha unit while it lasted

vander's werewolf self going back to the hideout he used to share with silco... their jackets hung together... bro...

i have to say i'm actually not sure i like the felicia stuff that much. i don't know. arcane isn't subtle ever and this felt like another sledgehammer. i think i also ... actually derive a bit less meaning from vander taking them in/silco raising jinx if actually vander and silco were besties with their mom and knew them growing up, too. not that it stopped silco from wanting to murk vi lmao so i guess it's no guarantee of his affection for jinx, but... yeah. idk. subtle as a brick: that's arcane

also was this telling me that vander saw felicia die during a rebellion they all incited, flipped out and blamed silco and tried to DROWN HIM ... like... jesus man that's pretty harsh lmao i'd start villain monologuing too

mel in the torture labyrinth was interesting, and i loved getting to meet a version of her sexy brother kino. as soon as [man's voice] appeared i was like omg is it her sexy brother... and it was! sort of! i'm assuming his look and personality and voice match real kino even if he was some kind of trick monster thing. i like the medarda family lore and i liked getting to see mel and kino interact, if briefly

on the other hand, mel being trapped in the torture labyrinth meaning that's her only 5 minutes of screentime for all of act 2 and the reveal is that she has magic powers which we already surmised from the s1 cliffhanger... i don't know... and an illegitimate baby plot? like... we have so many plots. please.

also she's totally pregnant and i hate that. lol.

i started this season ambessa's number 1 fan and i have enjoyed her but also there is a lot of her, when other major characters from s1 get little screentime. i had hoped seeing more ambessa would mean seeing more of ambessa and mel, bc their relationship with each other is very interesting, but... nope??? i mean, sure there's act 3, but we've had six episodes so far of little.

caitlyn's arc was such a disappointment to me. the end of act 1 with her was such a strong stark scene and by the time we pick up with her in act 2 we've already montaged past all her war crimes and into the part where she feels bad about them and is ready to turn a new leaf. like. come on man.

her reunion with vi was way too smooth. i would love vi to be angry with her for her bullshit. maybe they'll fight again next act, they fight all the time, but like... ugh. 2.1 was such a big falling out and then vi just shrugs it off and we're back to "cupcake". poor vi the writers dgaf about her

viktor's cult was not what i expected at all, i expected something more outwardly sinister lol. people on twitter are arguing back and forth about how obviously evil it was but i am not sure that's the case -- or like -- i mean i think as an audience member aware you're watching a tv show, it's easy to be like "this is clearly evil and will be revealed as such later", but just in terms of what the show is putting down in act 2 i think it's presented as this bastion of hope which is then destroyed. in act 3 we will find out why it was destroyed, i assume, and can retroactively decide if that was a good decision or not.

sky. sis. i wish they like. made you a person in s1. i have no frame of reference for if this feels like the real sky whose consciousness is now in the void (like viktor's seems to be?) or if she's like the hexcore's avatar for getting what it wants (which is what i feel act 1 implied), because they did not spend time in s1 to establish her

i joked in s1 a lot about salo getting a front row seat to jayce and viktor's weird gay thing over the years so it's nice he got to participate in their last conversation flkhghgl. but this was another scene where i felt the pacing was nerfing things -- i like the general exchange on paper, that there's been this time apart and viktor wants to show jayce what he's working on and jayce is all fucked up and bitter or whatever, but in real time their reunion, split, and then this scene happen in such a condensed time ... we haven't really seen either of them apart, we didn't see jayce's time growing bitter or whatever and even if we see it in act 3 it's belated?

i also thought it was odd how viktor was like "i was clouded by emotion" when honestly their breakup was the most emotionless he'd ever been to that point lol

it is very funny to think that jayce came out of s1 and the hell void and the lesson he learned was he should continue shooting first and asking questions never

i can think of several possible explanations for jayce's behaviour, ranging from "something i'd be super into" all the way to "i don't want to type it out in fear of invoking it into the universe". so i'm trying not to speculate all that much tbh, lest i grow attached to the former and get the latter

"peacock princes... an old family joke" and "you once told me every system has limits" are two great examples of stuff feeling rushed. these so clearly feel like they should be callbacks to scenes we actually *saw* but they just aren't. because we never got flashback kino, and viktor and sky never held a conversation until she died.

ekko and heimerdinger died on the way to their home planet...

this all sounds exceedingly negative listed out, when in reality i was mostly having a good time. it's just... the cracks are starting to show as the the show strains under the pressure of accomplishing all its goals in a measly 18 episodes. that crunch means any time someone's watching a scene about a plot or characters they like less they're going to start feeling impatient, any time a musical number doesn't hit (and i have to be honest, s2 is more misses than hits for me so far) they're going to feel impatient... i don't know. i find it difficult to see how they'll pull all of this off without leaving the audience thinking "jeeze that needed another season", or "why did they waste time on X when i wanted to see Y".

Sonic 3 Sonic 3

I've now seen Sonic 3! Welcome back, 2/3s of my dash that I had blocked lol

Spoiler-free impressions, but still behind a cut for those who don't want to draw inferences lol:

TL;DR, Sonic 3 is wonderful and tons of fun, but Sonic 2 was probably peak for my personal taste.

As others have said, Sonic 1 was very different from the games and each movie has now shifted a bit closer in terms of action and pacing. I adored the first movie but I totally get why a lot of folks who thought it was just okay are delighted with the direction things are going. Personally, I just found things a bit rushed on a character level, which was the element that was so charming in the first, admittedly un-Sonic-gamey movie. They hit every note you would want and expect, they just hit them VERY VERY FAST and it does feel like a game where you see an emotional cutscene, the screen fades, and then you begin an action level immediately after lol. Nothing is precisely missing, but quite a lot is kind of just ... told, not really shown.

I adored Shadow, as expected, and was very happy with how they adapted SA2's story generally, but I felt he suffered some of the same problems Tails did in the previous movie, which is that there was too much ground to cover to really develop his emotional arc. It exists, but there's no meat to it, nothing to chew at all, it's a meal replacement shake, one gulp just to get a taste, second gulp, gone. Sonic, too, has a perfunctory character arc in the movie, but it's very shallow: we're told what it is, it occupies a very few minutes of screentime and then resolves in the only way it possibly could. The previous two films felt like we were really seeing things through Sonic's eyes, for the most part; that's really not the case here, and I struggle to describe whose eyes we ARE really looking through, other than Dr. Robotnik.

And that brings me to probably the aspect of the movie I enjoyed the least, even though that's going to be entirely YMMV for people on an individual basis: there was too much Jim Carrey for me, lol. Way, way too much. For obvious reasons, there's a lot of Robotnik in this movie, but it isn't just an issue of lots of screentime: this story is honestly Robotnik's story more than it is anyone else's, and that was ... kind of a bummer to me? Again, a lot of folks disliked how much the previous two movies focused on the human characters, and here, that has been drastically scaled back for everyone else, but seemingly every moment of that screentime is now occupied by Jim Carrey. And he's very good, and very funny, and I'm not even mad about it, but I do wish some of that time had gone to Shadow instead, or indeed, Sonic himself. Creating an emotional journey for a character who didn't really need one and is arguably better without it felt like a shame when it came at the expense of Shadow's story, and I found myself honestly sort of hoping for a new villain in the next movie. It feels like we're running out of juice to squeeze here.

But, end of the day, I AM still completely looking forward to another movie, now more than ever, and truthfully, I'm not sure I've ever wanted to see a Sonic movie MORE than I want to see Sonic 4, lol.

So TL;DR 2: go see Sonic 3 at once and draw lots of fanarts and write lots of fanfics. It hits pretty much all the right notes, it just hits a few of them too loud and misses a few of the spaces between.

Considering what you responded to a few days ago, what are your thoughts on people pushing away the inherently queer motifs/aspects of the show because they're deterred by Mr. Robot being a vaguely satirical redditor show? So much of the show hinges on identity that our "villain" of the show is someone who struggles with between the lines of their life and their identity I think it's difficult to miss these marks on the overall narrative. But maybe that's just me?

ya imo whiteroses writing is a major weak point of the show. her backstory scene is kinda peak lazy queer character writing lol. her dead partner doesn't even have a name and the whole thing gets like 5 minutes of screentime. i don't think it's like... dumb necessarily that she wants to go to another universe that might treat her better, where she can redo the past, but i think this motivation was 1) brought in super late and 2) handled sloppily at the 11th hour. i wayyyyyy preferred her character in s1--this shady, impenetrable, totally dominating figure of legend who could not give less of a fuck about elliot outside of how his plan interfaces with hers

i also think her being a high up minister in the ccp is stupid. AND i think her knowing price thru that is dumb, even tho it gave us lots of great dialogue (price and WR scenes r some of my fave). they absolutely did not have to make her a politician lol she could have just been some random terrorist with tons of connections and political sway due to under the table deals with people. i think the whole "she's living a double life... in TWO ways!!" thing is unnecessary, and at times sloppy. the fact we also never see her DO much (we don't see her hack, don't really know what she does as a politician, etc) leaves her feeling like a plot convenience instead of someone actually intimidating, post s2. perhaps a more interesting route to take would have been if the dark army was a mercenary band being simply paid for by the ccp, a totally neutral group that gives its services to the highest bidders... maybe price and WR could have met in this au thru price pressuring the president to buy the dark army and bring them onto the american side to root out fsociety and reinforce the american dollar?? think north korea paying hackers to do the bangladesh bank heist, for example. this would have also been a nice contrast to elliots whole "i don't give a shit about money" ethos... a mercenary group that will do anything for cash because they think the time machine they're trying to build will wipe away all of the wrongdoing needed to get there?? like a totally nihilistic libertarian doomsday cult lol. i would have fucked with this hard. if u wanted to take this further, u could have the dark army go public and start broadcasting their messages like fsociety did, and have ppl irl start to believe in this new fringe cause. it would definitely fit with prices critique in s3 that fsociety is running on vibes rather than a concrete set of beliefs--fsociety is good for whipping up a fervour about things, but dark army really gets results. tons of people, depressed and destitute post 5/9, would be willing to buy into a charismatic cult promising to make the whole world and it's problems go away. and then i FURTHER think you could have added more tyrell subplot by having him start to lose faith in elliot/mr robot and start thinking maybe whiterose is the one he'd rather work with... at which point elliot/mr robot would have to win him back to fsociety. why try to be a god of destruction in this world when whiterose has a plan to become the god of a NEW universe? (<- this is how tyrell would interpret anything he learned about the time machine lol. he'd be skeptical of it but hey, when your leap of faith in elliot goes awry, maybe it's time for another leap of faith in a different direction....)

Frontiers is bad and boring to play but I take it over Forces anytime of the day, first the gameplay plays the game for you half of the time why is Classic Sonic here? Most likely because 1) Forces was meant to be one of the 2 games for the 25th anniversary, even if they both slid forward one year, 2) precisely to connect Forces and Mania, 3) to piggyback on the success of Generations. Do you want to call it pandering? Feel free to call it pandering, by 2016 fans weren't as eager to play as Classic again, true. But then we can also call pandering the relentless references to the Adventure era in Frontiers, both in simple "hey this reminds me of X" and in general plot beats - now that game very much wants to win the Adventure crowd back more than Forces wanted to appeal to the Classic fans.

I agree that something happened to Infinite during development, as everything in the main game hinted at him being a fully artificial creature and not a rando still sore that he was beaten by Shadow lol. But dude was cool in my book. I really like that stage where he creates all sorts of creepy illusions to stop Operation Big Wave :P he could have had more screentime, but he chewed that little screentime we had just fine. better than the end, anyway and always.

The game was most likely rushed, which sucks, no doubt about that. But somehow, only Forces gets treated like a piece of shit for being rushed, when Frontiers doesn't get nearly the same amount of disappointment for being pretty much a test game (and we know it was rushed because of the last two islands that are pieces cut from Kronos Island and for the weird way Sonic's corruption was handled). Hell, by this point, even '06 is getting apologism even though until recently it was the king of rushed games, and much worse about it than the previous examples.

Either you're equally uncharitable with rushed games that sacrificed content (so I'm not talking about game breaking glitches), or you cut them all some slack.

Sloppy translation. And while Sonic looks chipper after being freed, and we can argue all day if that's IC or not, you can guess from things like him beating Zavok with his bare fists or the veiled death threat he gives Infinite that deep down he's actually pretty angry.

Now, Sonic being rescued by his corruption in Frontiers in a minute, undoing all of his hard work in rescuing his friends, and him being just as chipper after Sage, the girl he had just befriended, died in space, is not sloppy translation, it's the game getting rushed to hell (although I don't know why Flynn blames time constraints when it comes to Sonic not sparing a thought about Sage lol).

Chinese Dramas I Watched in 2024

This year, I probably watched more kdramas than cdramas (haven't done the math on it yet) but the cdramas I did watch were quite fun!

First, the ones that aired in 2024:

Snowfall--Vampire drama!!!! I love vampires. Also featured my favorite villain of the year, human and pathetic and flamboyantly, gloatingly villainous, my number one poor little meow meow of 2024, Li Yingliang. He has great slashy tension with the MC! He has a great m/f romantic subplot going on in the background! He has an absolutely terrible success rate but he will not stop trying! This was my favorite cdrama I watched in 2024 entirely because of him (but also, the MC and all the other characters are pretty good as well). Also ppl keep getting captured and kidnapped, which is my favorite trope.

Jade's Fateful Love--Our two MCs can time travel when they die. Imo, this drama did not do enough with that, but maybe that's because this year I also watched 4 Minutes, which handles magical do-overs in a more interesting way. On the other hand, I enjoyed all the characters and their shenanigans, and it was an m/f romcom I was able to tolerate.

Under the Skin Season 2--I'm only halfway through this one but I'm still counting it bc I'm enjoying it thus far and, given my love of season 1, I highly doubt I would DNF it. This season focuses more on Shen Yi using his art skills to analyze ppl's psychology rather than to do impossible sketch artist feats. It's an interesting change in pace, and the show has lots of complex and often sympathetic criminals. I do think Shen Yi and Du Cheng have less going on personally, but that may change before the end of the show.

Shows from 2023 that I was catching up on:

My Journey to You--I wish this had continued in a femslashier direction than it did :( but I did love the two female leads and Gong Yuanzhi. Lots of intriguing and espionage, also my most purely wuxia watch of the year.

My Uncanny Destiny--This is the kind of cringe-humor romcom that I usually would be unable to watch due to secondhand embarrassment. However, I watched the first half of it while recovering from anesthesia after having my wisdom teeth out and thus I was able to tolerate it. And it's actually very funny! It has an over the top arrogant and outspoken female lead, and a male lead who is honestly just trying to keep up a lot of the time lol. My main critique: If you're going to have a female lead who has spent most of her life crossdressing, she needs to spend more screentime actually crossdressing!

Overall, I think the only cdrama I positively LOVED this year was Snowfall. But I still had a good time watching all of these. (And who knows, it's still possible the second half of Under the Skin Season 2 will change that stance!)

Arcane Ramblings (spoilers!)

•I reallyyyy should’ve rewatched S1 before starting S2, oops.

•Whenever a song started playing, a common reaction I had was “hmm this sounds weird, I don’t like it” *1 minute later* “wait this actually sounds good, I love it!”

I think I enjoyed the second season’s music more than I did the first’s.

•I’m in love with Sevika. Why did she suddenly disappear for most of the season >:( And after getting a really hot haircut too!!

•omg Cait stop being problematic

But actually I really liked her character arc, and uhh while I don’t excuse her being a cop, I think some people (mainly on the bird hellsite) are going a little too far with their hate for her.

•Violet’s pit fighter makeover…. Waow…

•I like Steb

•I feel like Arcane does a really good job of making graphic violence feel impactful and shocking.

•Oh so this is what people meant by “who hurt the Arcane writers?”

•I honestly did not think they were actually going to kill off the little girl, wow. I kind of wish we’d seen the immediate aftermath of it, with everyone’s reactions. I have some mixed feelings on it, on one hand I think it’s a development that makes sense with Isha’s character, on the other hand it kind of felt like a waste.

•I like Ekko/Jinx as a pairing, I think they’re really cute together. However, I wish their relationship had gotten more screentime, because unfortunately the pairing felt a little underdeveloped.

Actually Ekko in general needed more screentime :(

•I didn’t have much interest in CaitVi during the early part of the season, but sometime near the end I felt my interest in them as a pairing rekindle. Screamed (internally) with happiness when I got to the horny lesbian jail scene. Now show me the full version!! 👀

•You know, I was all like “I’m happy that CaitVi is a thing now but I hope Maddie isn’t hurt by it, she seemed really nice” and then this bitch—!!! I don’t know if her and Cait were in an actual relationship or if they were just sleeping together, but I do wish it had been built up more, to make her betrayal hit harder.

Also I couldn’t stop thinking about how much this scene felt like something that would’ve happened in a CaitVi fanfic lmao. Just a very sudden “actually, I’m evil” moment that screams Die For Our Ship.

•Ambessa and Victor were wonderful villains. Whatever problems I had with the season, I think both of them were written and handled really well.

•I didn’t care for Jayvik during the first season, in fact I really didn’t care for Jayce at all, but wow I really liked their relationship throughout this one. That final episode was beautiful.

•Me: of course Jinx isn’t going to die, she’s in LoL. *Jinx falls to her death* Me: o_O ???

Apparently(?) she is implied to be alive at the end, but wow I was really confused by that.

•Yeah the pacing this season was definitely a little odd.

Some thoughts on the anime from me :3

"Watching" the Automata anime has been an interesting experience. I've heard a lot of negativity towards it and was unsure why, but I did recently see a whole thing about the production *nightmare* that it's been through, and that the animation is actually pretty bad because of time crunch.

This came as a surprise to me because I've actually been "watching it" in my pocket at work on Bluetooth. I kinda figured since anime isn't really my style anymore and I'm here solely for the characters that it wouldn't matter LOL... (I much prefer their models over their 2D designs)

I could kind of tell it looked like shit in episode 1, just from what I had seen when I started, but I brushed that off as me being negative about everything. I also was a little charmed by the shitty CGI?? It reminded me of a 2010 anime. The juxtaposition of 2B being practically rotoscoped over the game animation on top of the really off looking CGI enemies and vehicles? Total 2010s look.

I already intended to rewatch it all since it's deliciously short compared to a lot of shows, soooooo... I guess I will see how I feel about it! The story and writing has been, in my *personal opinion*, really really interesting. Seeing the game play out in a totally new order, sometimes entirely different locations for events or characters present...

In a sense, it has felt like fanfiction. That sounds like an insult, but I mean it like it feels like everything the fans were yearning and aching for. I.e. 2B and 9S simply getting to talk more, to eachother and to resistance members we barely see in game.

It occasionally takes a minute to be funny and let you decompress after all the depressing shit. Jackass just being Jackass and getting much more screentime feels like a special gift to the fans since she was instantly so beloved. The fact the "fanservice" in this show is just getting to see the characters in a comedic light says volumes about how sad it all is. And btw; if you loved Automata then this show is VERY fucking funny sometimes. A machine child tries to light A2 on fire with a kitchen lighter to help her stop being sick, and the dub actresses delivery of the line "Hey, hey just what do you think you're doing. Don't you dare." in like real fear makes me laugh so hard.

I saw it talked about as a product of the production struggles, but the way the show often slows down for an entire episode to let the characters breathe and interact with the world is so important to me. Getting to see 2B and 9S *actually* spending time together. Even after route C begins we get some excellent A2 interactions with the machines and other characters.

I just can't get enough of how the characters talk to eachother, how they spun some of the most empty dialouge-box reading scenes into something more, and how they keep finding ways to blindside and torture me with *actually* shocking alternate events.

its truly so fun to write the collector. like im not joking about him being my favorite owl house character despite his maybe twenty total minutes of screentime, so its been such a JOY to expand his role in this series!!

bc like. god. actually i think i wrote a whole like. bit of flash fiction/prose poetry type thing for them a while ago. probably in my files somewhere. but just. youre an immortal eight year old. you are in these years where you need to interact with other people for your own mental stability and health. to figure out the whole Being A Person thing. and you are trapped for like, centuries. trapped away from everyone and everything and DUST, which, in universe, in literally connection personified. you're cut off from all of this.

and you are, let me say again, eight years old.

truly the collector is just. hes had everyone he ever cares about leave him--his siblings the other archivists left him behind not out of any sense of cruelty, really, but because caring about people just isnt really a thing they do. quite frankly they live so long they didnt even notice. theyre far-away stars. not far because they're mean. just because thats what stars do.

and then king's dad (who um. doesnt have a name <3 this is why the collector calls him 'the big bully' its literally bc i never gave him a name--) was an adult the collector actually trusted and looked up to (he meshed REALLY WELL into titan society until the archivists started Doing A Murder since titans are the only beings that match them in power and they have very very different ideas about dust). like ive said before the collector is owlbeastkin but before that they never had a super stable sense of identity--in another world where they stayed w/ the titans they wouldve ended up a titan.

and then king's dad just. trapped him in a tablet forever.

and like, to be fair to king's dad he was reacting out of fear and the best knowledge he had (he assumed the collector led the archivists to the titans, and like, he did, but its not like he knew he was doing that, and, you know, poor guy had seen a huge chuck of his fellow titans killed including babies and eggs of which he had an egg to consider), but it still TRAPPED THEM. and then he died and so did all the rest of the titans so nobody could free the collector even if they wanted to.

and then BELOS, who manipulated and lied to the collector for so long and was also literally his only friend after being alone forever, so like, of course the collector just blindly went along with whatever he said. he was gonna free them!! he listened to them when they talked about stardust which nobody else ever did! he had no idea what the fuck a witch was! he just liked being able to see the stardust sometimes, and belos brought him to places with a lot of stardust. to destroy it, but like--you know. it was THERE.

but all these people were just USING them, and they never really understand that until king comes around. and king's also a scared eight year old!! but like. king's also not wrong. the collector did aid belos in destroying the entire isles. like no joke belos SUCCEEDS here. like not long-term obvi this has a happy ending but at the point we're in at for the future? it doesnt matter that the draining spell failed. all the palistrom trees are dead. witch society Cannot come back from that even if they did end up beating the collector. theyre doomed.

anyways what was i saying. collector. right.

so like, then they meet firefly/grr-click-growl/wings-across-night/the owl beast (king of having so many names i love her <3) and shes like, the first person who cares for them and ISNT using them. even king is using them!! but firefly has seen Some Shit. she sees the collector as a hatchling who was kicked out of his nest and is doing her best to be some sort of stable figure for him, but she doesnt Not see the stuff he's done.

the collector took over the world bc he's scared--all he's ever known is being used and trapped so he doesnt exactly trust most people easily. firefly would Love to not be in this world anymore. shes also got a loyalty to eda and king and luzmari. and, like, cool motive, still trapping an entire society of people.

but like. shes the one who is here right now and nobody else is trying to help this kid.

but the collector just. hes just an eight year old. a very, very old eight year old. but he doesnt understand things like "you can make the wrong choices and still choose to do better later" and "im mad at what you did but that doesnt mean i dont care about you."

he just sees someone upset with him. just sees another person who used him and doesnt care and is going to leave bc everyone leaves him and in a world where EVERY SINGLE PERSON comes in pairs, hes the only one who stands alone.

Season 2, Episode 4 thoughts.

I continue watching this show as another turning of the wheel considering all the changes. Some changes I understand, others I don't. When Liandrin is the most interesting character on the show and Maksim and Ihvon get more screentime than Mat is when one realizes this adaptation is a bit wonky.

Rand's subplot is the most jarring so far considering in The Great Hunt it's fast paced, dynamic and has a lot of great character moments and growth for him. On the show however, four episodes in, he's been stuck with Selene and stripped of his agency.

And why did they have they have the actor cut off his hair if Moiraine was walking around asking everyone about the 'red haired boy' and everyone knew who she was talking about lol?

Did we really need to spend ten minutes with Lan repeating the same stuff we saw in Eps 1-3. And why is Lan being babied by Alanna and her warders in terms of not being told about Lanfear? At least if Lan had used the letter about Lanfear to go to Rand, we could have had them bonding and practising sword forms and build up both main characters. With only 8 episodes I wish this show was more concise and utilized it's time better for the main characters.

Lindsay Duncan was excellent as always as Moiraine's sister and it's show only scenes like this that I enjoy. Liandrin and her son, Moiraine and her sister - these complexities enrich the show.

I did enjoy Alanna's little Indian village - noticed some sarees and salwars - and Alanna herself is vastly more enjoyable than the book version. She provides some much needed levity.

And that's another thing, this show needs more humor and community in the White Tower. Novices and accepted playing pranks and gossiping about the Warders and enjoying being in that community.

Hopper is adorable and Perrin learning about being a wolfbrother and the tower plot with the wonder girls is the best and that says something considering these two plots come closest to their book counterparts.

Castlevania Nocturne review (S 1 & 2)

As much as I loved the og series, can't say the spin-off is as good.

Obviously, //SPOILERS Disclaimer: there are a lot of very subjective (and perhaps questionable) opinions, I'm definitely not forcing them on anybody, these are just my own impressions.

The show brings up very important topics about colonialism and class and there really not many media that cover it up so openly. The idea behind the show and its message are great.

But if we go into details about characters and plot...

The show feels like it's almost good, there are things I like, but they are not quite.. there? Let me explain.

I liked many new interesting powers like Annette's and Maria's. Maria's development is this regard was pretty complete, but Annette just stuck to creating swords when she could probably go in full earth-bender from avatar style. She has more potential than she's been shown I feel like?

The elaboration on Nightcreatures being actually souls of people and their memories affecting their decisions instead of just being weapons is good. Thinking about it, it feels way too op, no? It's like a full-on resurrection with keeping their concience and they even gain powers? There be the thing like oh no we look like monsters but y'all strong af and don't even have downsides like vampires??

I'm quite upset of forging masters just disappearing altogether. There's been an interesting metaphor to being a creator and changing world for the better or worse in og Castlevania series, but now it's basically gone. If they decided to go full-on catholic theme and have a corrupted priest, at least add some allegory to a human deciding he's a god and facing consequences or something but he didn't even got killed off by vampires, Maria just fried him up. Make the corrupted priest learn dark arts and become a forge master and start thinking he's a god. But we got a random-ass souless machine which ended up being even 'better' in forging than humans were before?? Hell nah.

Mizrak questioning faith and allegory for repressed homosexuality and catholic guilt is tasty, we're coming back to the roots of vampire genre and it feels more of a tribute, than trope overuse. I just wish him and Olrox weren't that much of a background characters. I've seen a lot of people posting about this plotline just to find out they have like 10 minutes of screentime lol you people of tumblr tricked me again I can't.

About gods btw. How do we get Sekhmet being a real entity (a strong 'vampire' as I figured) but catholic god is nowhere to be seen or heard? Like we know hell canonically exists (because it appears in many religions ig). Mizrak keeps talking about his and theirs gods and we are supposed to judge this hypocrisy, but the creators themselves seem to pick and choose.. Is it just me noticing it?

The pacing is not that good. Long flashbacks do not do the story justice, it would be better to show history in the beginning (first Tara, then Richter as a child, then Annette and Edouard, and then make them meet in present time) and then see the story progress. Constant back and forth is a little annoying..

Especially when you kill a character, you should show their story before their death scene, because audience just has no emotions about it?? Like show us the story of Edouard first, and then kill him off. Watching flashback when he's already dead doesn't do much, unfortunately. Like yes, he continues to live later, but we don't know about it going into the series. It's shown as if he was living and just continues living, but his death is supposed to be a big thing! He didn't just continue living as if nothing happened, or did he? Here comes back on my take on new Nightcreatures plot not making sense. Make us feel like they lost a part of themselves at least? The show fails to do so.

Main character being a smug and confident young dude with his parent dying as traumatic past is so much of a shonen trope my ass just can't make myself take him seriously.. I almost liked him when he got ptsd from seeing Olrox in season 1 and had some personality.. But then he even got a typical anime scene of awakening his powers and suddenly becoming strong without any training.. yeah no. Sorry. His entire character is so anime-like it makes me cringe. All of Richter's fights are anime cliches from moves, to camera angles, to his one-liners. I like the og Castlevania because it's an animation, but in such a different style from everything that's been out at the time. Just to have creators make the spin-off an american take on anime. I'm not buying it at all, sorry. This one is likely just my personal opinion and taste.

Also Belmonts just being magic users is a bit dissapointing. Like yeah, before Trevor they used magic, it's just him who cannot use it, but with overpowered mc the whole theme of Belmonts being just humans but still stading up and fighting evil because they are the only shield humanity have against vampires is just lost. Btw why is there magic as a colourful beam when it's always just been elements or some supernatural stuff vampires have, am I missing something? We got a fucking magical girl Richter, oh, sorry, I mean the anime protagonist with heavy aura Richer, yeah.

Now the last, but not least. The entire plot. Idk where to start even it's just confusing as fuck.

The whole revolution plot? I know vampires are originally a metaphor for the rich doing whatever they want, but this is a bit too much on the nose, no? Just personal opinion ig

But okay, whatever. The question is, why are we bringing Egyptian gods to the French fucking revolution? Why would Erzsebet, a white-ass lady in a white-ass country be a reincarnation of Sekhmet?? Make it make sense. Like yeah, Sekhmet herself told Drolta it was fucking cringe, but it was a creative choice in fact.

Edit: found theory that it's showing how tyrants often deceive and appropriate imagery from colonised countries to gain more power.

Listen, I get that creators wanted to make a story about Sekhmet and all, but then just make a story about revolution in Saint-Domingue? Annette (and many others apparently) get powers from Sekhmet, so show her use them in that fight. Because the fight that we got did not free the people from French colonisation, Maria even said in the end that they fought pure evil and not the regime. I can't bro. Like I guess we will get more seasons and it's just a first part of the story, but in this case creators should have made more back and forth in present time with France and Saint-Domingue (you know, where it actually makes sense, and not in Edouard's story).

It feels as if creators made too complicated of a plot and struggle to follow it themselves kinda situation..

All in all, Castlevania Nocturne feels way too generic of a show? The storytelling, the pacing, the characters - we have already seen all these before.

Original Castlevania series was a breath of fresh air in comparison with other media, and this feeling is completely gone, unfortunately.

Though have to give it the credit for bringing up such important social and societal topics.

in addition to harvey/two face (because he really was showstopper sawwy to the knights), but i reallyyyyy adore duela. not only was she hilarious, her character arc/development throughout the show was great. always enjoyed whenever she was on screen i was like omfgggg my bestie !!

where do i even begin......the one that sticks out in my little brain of mine is when harvey overdoses on his anxiety meds and meets face to face with harv/fugue!harvey. that was absolutely incredible and i replay that scene in my head like a rotisserie chicken bc those writers put their whole pussy into it

at first i was going to say duela and carrie because their dynamic was soooo much fun but after 1x13, harvey and duela pulled my heartstrings like damnnnnnn i did ackshully tear up at that monologue naurrr don't let my mutuals know that. honorable mention are the row siblings because WAHHHHHHH 🥺😭 they mean so much to me

i mentioned duela's development in my first answer and i am not very eloquent with words if we're being honest but the way that she gained a sense of purpose and wanting to actually help gotham through all the trials and tribulations that were thrown at her...really wish we got to see more of that

where is the s2 blueprint ik they're sitting somewhere in the producers' houses....but yeah, i actually liked how gotham knights ended! it works well ffor a mini series. the ambiguity of it all is ripe with possibilities for the fans to gnaw on. turner being trained to become the next batman, the gotham knights putting their boots back on to save the city thinking turner is gone for good, harvey allowing harv to take over with the potential of becoming a major problem....tag me in any stories you write, you guys 👍🏽❤
