Caleb x Reader

A/N: Okay, so, this is my first attempt at writing fics since I was 15, the first time sharing it since I was 14 and my first time writing reader insert so... Please be nice, but do tell me what you think, it will help me get better ! I started with something that's not very long, hope that's okay ! Also, as good as my english is, it's not my first language, so if it's yours and you notice a grammatical error, do tell me so I can rectify it ! Anyway, here goes nothing...

You couldn't sleep.

Since you had come back from Skyhaven, you had been conflicted, unable to detangle the mess that was your brain at the moment. On one hand, you felt happy that Caleb was alive and well, but on the other hand, you felt something was… off with him. Like he wasn't the Caleb you knew in your childhood, while somehow still behaving like him towards you. It unsettled you deeply, but afterall, he was still Caleb, wasn't he ? He still called you the same stupid nickname, still teased you endlessly and still made sure you were healthy and happy. So why then did it feel like he was different ?

You figured, if you couldn't sleep, might as well try and see if you could reassure yourself somehow. You knew Caleb was likely to still be awake at this time, probably just coming back home from completing his duties as the Fleet's Colonel. So you did the only thing you could think of. You reached for your phone on your bedside table, unplugged it and after looking through your contacts, you dialed Caleb's number, bringing your phone up to your ear and laying back down.

The phone rang. And rang. And rang.

Just as you were about to give up, finally Caleb answered, sounding out of breath, like he had run a marathon. "Pipsqueak ? Why are you calling me at this hour ? Everythin' okay ?"

For a second, you froze, still not used to hearing his voice again. For a second, you felt relieved. Then you remembered how a phone call works and that you actually needed to answer him, so you said in a hesitant voice, "Uh, yeah ! Sorry, I'm totally fine, don't worry. It's just that I couldn't sleep and I missed you, so…"

You heard him chuckle at the other end of the line, the sound making you smile. "Damn, Pips, how would you live without me ?"

You laughed at his teasing words before remembering the whole year you had no choice but to spend living without him, your laughter dying in your throat. Suddenly, you felt like you couldn't speak, your throat closing in on itself and your chest aching. You couldn't breathe. Caleb, who knew you so well, picked up on what was happening immediately and began to panic, cursing himself for joking about this so carelessly, "Shit, I'm sorry Pips, I shouldn't have- Damn it. Okay."

He calmed himself down before saying in a soothing voice, "Everything's fine, Pipsqueak. Breathe. I'm here now, I'm alive and I won't leave you ever again, okay ? Breathe with me."

Hearing those words, that your foggy brain took a minute to understand, you slowly began to calm down, your breathing evening out as you followed his lead. You focused on his breathing, breathing along with him.

In. Out. In. Out. Then you let out a long sigh, the tension lifting off your shoulders slowly.

"Thanks… I'm sorry about that, it's still a bit fresh. Maybe avoid joking about it until I've had the time to diggest you being alive and back for good ?" you said when you finally came back to your senses.

"Yep. Totally. What do you say I cook something special for you next time you visit as my way of saying sorry ?" he said. You could hear from his tone just how guilty he felt for being the cause of your torment. He reminded you of a guilty puppy, and the mental image it summoned in your mind lifted your spirit as you pictured a puppy Caleb looking up at you with shiny eyes, ears flat on his head as he pleaded for your forgiveness.

You let him feel guilty for a few seconds before you answered, "Sure, sounds like a plan !"

"Great ! It's settled then. You should sleep now, Pips, it's late and tomorrow's not your day off, is it ?" he said, and for a second you wondered how he knew that tomorrow wasn't your day off but you chose not to question it too much. Instead, you answered "You're right, although that applies for you too, Colonel."

You heard him laugh softly before he replied, " You don't need to worry about me, Pips. But yeah, I'll get to bed soon, don't worry. So… Good night then ?"

"Yeah, good night. Sleep well." you said before hanging up and letting out a sigh. You dropped your phone on your bedside table yet again before letting your arms rest in a cross on your mattress.

You wouldn't know what changed about Caleb anytime soon, but as you closed your eyes and felt sleep overcoming your body, you thought that maybe this new version of him wasn't so bad. Afterall, he couldn't be that different if he still cared that much about you, right ?

Taylor's Nightwing being a financial and critical success says nothing about it's character work. Azzarello's Wonder Woman was a financial and critical success too.

Both runs changed the characters to appeal to a stereotype of what their characters are supposed to be "Golden Boy" and "Warrior Woman" to make them diggestible to mainstream audiences.

It's happening with a lot of heroes, but it is still most noticable when it happens to those who are supposed to be "subservient" to the standard of male JL superhero. They can only rise if they become more like them and there is also less thought put behind their new narratives. It's a real shame.

A few notes on Cakeverse (my version)

*Clarifying this is my version because I don't own the concept of cakeverse. This is the understanding of cakeverse that I will be using for the 1950's AU. Forks: -Tend to be stronger by nature than the rest of the population, although doesn't show physically. It's easy for them to gain muscle though. -Smell sense are better than normal humans. Some, but not all, are also born with a better eyesight that adjust quickly to the dark. -Jaw strenght is higher. -Their stomachs can diggest practically anything they eat. -They are also able to eat more and burn calories faster. -No distinctive smell of their own. -Their bodies do not create anything meant to be enticing by itself, just like normal humans. -Heal faster from most wounds. Likewise, they very rarely fall ill or are known to have any allergies. -In the original cakeverse, they can't taste other foods that isn't Cakes. In mine they do, but they would still prefer Cakes since all foods just pale in comparison. -They are viewed as naturally more aggressive and dominant by society. If that is true or not for any individual Fork is an entirely different question. In some contexts this is a good thing (like in business settings), but in others it can be rather bad, especially for children Fork who are assumed to be "bound to be cannibals" before they did anything. [Cannibalism is NOT socially acceptable, since a majority of the population are still just normal humans. Which does not mean it doesn't happen or that there aren't business made around the concept. It's still a taboo topic to bring out in casual conversation if you aren't sure of what kind of people are you talking to.] Cakes: -More difficult for them to build muscle with exercise. -Their metabolism is slower, allowing them to go without food more time than with Fork in general.

-Regenerative bodies that are even better than Forks. They can heal from practically anything and never get sick or get any allergies. -Their sense of hearing is usually heightened. -Higher tolerance to pain than Forks. -Their bodies remain flexible even without exercise. -Their characters are assumed to be compliant, submissive and too weak to defend themselves so they are usually free targets for bullying in early childhood. Because of this, they can be targetted for abuse even by normal human beings, not just Forks.

The other day i was watching how people made fun of the Hazbin trailer and someone uploaded a clip from "Inside Every demon is a Rainbow" to say it was a downgrade and my jaw dropped when i saw that it was true, i always thoght that the "new" H.H had something that made it look worse than the pilot but i couldn't put my finger on it, and now i think i understand the reson.

So, these are the reasons why the new clip looks like a downgrade (in my opinion):

1)The Song.

No matter your opinion on Hazbin, we all agree that "Inside of every demon is a rainbow" is an iconic song. Its not a masterpiece, but it works really great to introduce the show. Maybe its nostalgia talking, but i love this song, i really like how it start slow but then goes into a fast catchy tune as Charlie is talking with enthusiasm about her proyect. The voice actress also is doing an amazing song because she sounds SO energetic and genuine, wich is clearly a sign of how much she loved that job. Its a cringe song, but in a "charming" and pure way, that is very unique and enjoyable when you turn off your brain a little.

Meanwhile, the new one sounds like a generic, forgetable, lifeless Disney song, the only difference is that it has curses and shit. Its like its trying to replicate the other one without understanding what made it so loved.

2) The damn camera movements

The pilot was fast moving, energetic and sometimes there were parts where you couldnt tell what was happening until you paused, but even so, it was easier to digest because the camera was still most of the time, it didnt need crazy movements. There was a million things happening on screen, but at leats the camera had slight movements so your eyes could at least know where your focus should be in (check out the "so all you cartoon porn addictions" part to see what im talking about).

The new one? It shakes and zooms like crazy every time a character takes a step and it makes it hard to the eyes to understand where the fuck they should be looking. Its not even funny, someone WILL get motion sickness.

3) The character designs

Im one of those people who didnt like most of the redesigns, now i understand why: because they dont fix ANY of the problems the original ones had: no less use of red, they still have a shit ton of unecesary details, they still have copypasted body types...

I would say some are WORSE.

Take Charlie, for example; she used to wear a light red shirt with black pants, she would blend a little bit in the background when interacting with it. Now she wears a bright red suit in bright red background and she gets lost EVEN MORE. The only thing they improved was her hairstyle.

4) The animation

Some people say that the animation is good and its just the editing that makes it look bad, but i disagree. Just take a look at the pilot and then the new clip, you will see a clear downgrade.

The old animation was so smooth and expressive, new one is choppy and is afraid of smearframes. Making characters with cartoony propotions look so stiff.

Its like those Sonic games when they used motion capture to animate Sonic and his friends. So they would be literal cartoons animals moving like realistic humans and it sucked.

4) The pilot was visually easier to "diggest" in general

I gotta say, while re-watching the clip of Inside of every demon, the only parts where it was hard to follow were when Charlie interacted with characters with exagerated designs and when she is rapping and there are a lot of fast scenes that ends before you have time to understand what you saw. The rest was just ok.

But in the new clip, it was 90% Charlie jumping around different backgrounds with a drunk camera man and in some part i paused to look at the wall cuz i felt like my eyes were gonna burn if i keep looking.

So thats it, there are some other reasons but these are the most important ones.

Sorry for writting too much, its such that im mad for what they did to a proyect i used to be obssesed with.

Anyway, hope Hazbin gets cancelled in the mid of the first season and the rest became lost media, have a good day 🩷

These are some great thoughts, Anon, thank you. New Hazbin doesn't have much appeal to outsiders, but it looks even worse when held up to the pilot.

"Inside Every Demon is a Rainbow" isn't the best song in the pilot, but it was an excellent song to introduce us to Charlie. It's not an easy one to sing either, but Charlie's singing VA nailed it.

Honestly, discovering radfem didn't impact too much in my life like if was another average woman attracted to men. I used to have a normal relationship with male classmates or friends. And learning about radfem and seeing how much of depraved, filthy, misogynist and degenerate rapist creatures they are didn't make so much of a change for me. I view all males around me as worthless, even my dad. It's like i was always meant to be a misandrist. I only care about women.

I know this couldn't be the same process for osa women since they have more to lose and give up on relationships with moids. But still i hope every baby radfem has it easy like me to diggest and process all of the brutal misogyny of this world.

you know what i AM gonna get on my little soapbox i think the reason they dont make pop songs about insane topics that have nothing to do with the singer anymore and shitty fanfiction disguised as booktok romance novels is this contemporary obsession with relatability and palatable/marketable faux "realness" . media is less about the medium itself but about how consumable and accessible it can be. the least effort it takes to connect with the piece the easier it is to get it to chart wtv im not saying anything new but its still boring and revolting as hell !

There are a few reasons you shouldn't engage in cannibalism.

Prion disease, though this can be avoided by not eating brains like a zombie.

Nutrient imbalances. This one happens more often in donner party situations where the reason for cannibalism is a lack of other food in the first place; however it's also because the more steps removed from a synthesizing source of nutrients the fewer can be retained when diggesting it.
