#dinotopia quest for the ruby sunstone

I watched dinotopia: quest for the ruby sunstone two times in a row and now I really want to write a story where it's kinda like that but also mixed with the ark notes, specifically the island and extinctions notes.

It's not a modern setting and dinosaurs aren't on one island, they're everywhere. The setting would probably be around viking or roman times. Dinosaurs have a human conscious but they are still owned and rode by humans. They're also used in war, and have started a few of their own.

This is a very silly movie and not at all true to the source material, but there is a scene where a T. rex fights a scorpion mecha, so I kind of love it.

GSlayer and I spent the evening watching a VHS tape we found at the thrift store today called "Dinotopia: The Quest for the Ruby Sunstone" or whatever it was called.

The movie was mostly the boring kind of bad, and the only thing that kept me interested in it was the two villian sidekick characters because they were laughably dumb and the best, most sensible, characters in the whole movie.

I can however say that this movie is now home to the most disgusting scene I have ever witnessed in a movie, period, hands down, no contest. I was convinced to watch a hardcore porn movie this week, and even that wasn't nearly as disgusting as the scene I witnessed in Dinotopia, jesus christ. I'd rather watch the porno again.

On a DEEPLY unrelated note, I've been waiting years for the fine thread of fate to create an opportunity for me to bring this up. When I was a kid, I imagined Luxa from The Underland Chronichles as the blue haired girl from Dinotopia.

No It doesn't match her character description at all.

No it doesn't make sense.

But when I tell you that for literal YEARS, whenever I imagined Luxa, all I envisioned was this girl:

From the janky 2000s animated movie.

I have no idea why my brain decided to do this, but it's lived with me for years. The stars have finally aligned for me to bring it up in a way that's conversation relevant.

Man, I really feel bad for the Dinotopia guys. They built this whole intricate, creative, enrapturing world, and it was going to be the next big thing. It was gonna be the next franchise. They got George Fucking LUCAS to make a screen adaptation of it. Yeah, the starwars guy. Then midway through production he realizes how much he loves making movies and decides to ditch your project and make the prequels instead. They say there's no bad blood but... man it would fucking kill me to go to the theater and see Naboo and think "Fuck, that coulda been waterfall city"

There still was a franchise. They did eventually make spinoff paperback novels and video games and there were even a couple screen adaptations, but they were done by Lifetime and Hallmark. The lifetime one is actually surprisingly good given its budget. It tells a story that mirrors the structure of the original picture book, two brothers get marooned on Dinotopia, one of them rides a pterosaur and then they have to stop a dude named Krab from stealing a crystal that he needs to make an ancient machine get him off the island... but it's not a reboot or anything, it's the same continuity as the books. I guess guys named Krab really do be stealing crystals every generation or so. It's not really that bad of a series but damn it could have been George Lucas!

I dunno, I just find myself thinking about it. It was a uniquely artistic and non-violent series for its time. All of the dinosaurs and people live in harmony. There used to be a steampunk cyber empire of capitalists who tried to replace dinosaurs with the coolest looking robots you could imagine, but then there was a revolution and they all live in communistic harmony with no real currency. Each according to their need, each to their own ability. All that Jazz.

I'm certainly more normal about it than I am say The Underland Chronicles but I still find myself thinking about those gorgeous communist dinosaur picture books. In another reality, Battleborn won over Overwatch, Galidor never got its budget cut and was actually a smash success, Warner bros actually did something with the TUC film rights, and Kids in the 00s grew up with Dinotopia instead of the Starwars prequels.

COMPLETELY OBJECTIVE dinotopia FACTS

the original books: incredible, fucking gorgeous, spectacular works of art and imagination, literally the first fictional world i ever dreamed of living in as a tiny child

the tv miniseries: listen it is SO GOOD if you give it a chance, yeah some of the acting is dire but the WORLDBUILDING!! the criticism of self-proclaimed utopia! the visuals!!! every time i watch it I’m shocked at how good it actually looks for its age and budget and how it was clearly made with love

the tv show: no

quest for the ruby sunstone: genuinely awful but as a kid* I had it on one of those dvds so cheap that there’s no menu and they just loop forever and sometimes I would watch it two or three times in a row so i cannot help but love it

the various games: i haven’t played any of them but Every Day i think about that YouTube interview with the puppeteer from the adventure game and quietly grieve over the fact that you can’t really build that kind of animatronic/puppet to last and think about how sad the dinosaur characters look now. I think about how the stan winston t rex from the original jurassic park, which changed my life, was always doomed to become rubber dust and metal scrap. I consider how one of my favorite art forms is so transient even as it is meant to be recorded forever. I mourn a little. I wish I was better at getting old games and emulators to run.

*this is a lie by implication. not one week ago I carefully packed that DVD for moving along with the rest of my DVDs. i will without question watch this movie again. but it IS bad

Oh MAN I'm glad I decided to buy this book! The artwork is gorgeous, and the descriptions of the different locations, dinosaurs, how the island of Dinotopia functions, I love it! I can't believe I'd never heard of the Dinotopia book series up until now! All I had seen before this was the animated film "Dinotopia: Quest for the Ruby Sunstone" which was eh... HOWEVER THIS! I very much enjoyed this book. Really immersed me into it's world.

In conclusion, very VERY good book, would recommend.

I think I will forever regret not mentioning the Dinotopia Miniseries, it's sequel television series, and the animated Quest for the Ruby Sunstone film on my Dinotopia post that is seemingly getting at least some buzz from certain people.

I was well aware of those things when making the post, I simply wanted the post to bring attention to the books themselves, allow me to vent some frustration about why a book series as pure and beautiful as them isn't popular today but H*rry wizard boy is, and then throw in some trivia about and lament on the absence of the theatrical Dinotopia movie that had been discussed at one point, as it potentially could have driven popularity of the books up to the ranks of hairy wizard, given that none of the prior non-book media I didn't mention did.

Now I continue to get well meaning but somewhat repetitive comments about those pieces of media. While most of it is fine, some of the people seem to think I either purposely left them out of my post for some reason, or believe I didn't know about them. I also keep seeing people insist that those things (which are all separate entities and not a single cohesive piece of visual media as some suggest) were this mythical Dinotopia film I was talking about (they weren't and aren't).

My venting aside, I love all of you, and thanks for looking at my silly post about a beautiful book about a land filled with humans coexisting with dinosaurs.
