i fully support people who cannot engage with his work anymore and i do think that because he's a still-living person it's imperative to not give this guy another cent, but we cannot pretend that everyone was just "too dumb" to see the secret clues and turn this into another case of "what you write is what you endorse." plenty of dogshit people write good stories. plenty of good people write dark stories. that's all.

I am actually begging some people to just let some spaces exist untouched by real-world issues and horrors.

Like I've lost count of the amount of times peaceful game or fandom servers have been ruined by people stampeding in with political rants, bitching about world issues, demanding internal activism, demanding vent channels so they can whine about their shitty parents, ect.

with love. you have to fact check shit. yes you. you still have to fact check shit. a lot of people are great at fact checking stuff they don’t want to be true, but somehow are still absolute ass at fact checking stuff that’s rhetorically convenient to them. even people my age, who I KNOW grew up doing internet/bibliography literacy workshops, and being warned not to believe anything that isn’t reliably sourced, people who DO harp on fact checking conservative output or whatever, are still kneejerk sharing unsourced shit that is partially or wholly untrue or misleading, because it suits whatever narrative they’re pursuing in that moment, without even a “take this with a grain of salt”. fact check!!!!!! look at the sources!!!!! yes it’s a drag!!! do it!!!!!

There is an interpretation of this that I agree with, in the form of like, conservation efforts, ecosystem balance, and animal welfare considerations exist independently of how you personally relate to that particular species. And that's all well and good.

But there is also an interpretation of this where it's like, don't deworm your cat, because you'd be murdering dozens of innocent parasites, which is clearly morally wrong!

And I am going to take issue with that second interpretation. I reserve the right to swat mosquitoes that are in my apartment trying to drink my blood.

There’s a few things going on with this statement.

1. Assuming that low empathy makes someone a bad person. It does not. Actions are what matter, not empathy levels.

2. Demonizing autistic people whose low/no empathy they attribute to their autism. Autism fundamentally impacts the way you interact with the world, others, and yourself. That includes empathy.

I’m putting “mansplaining” on a shelf with the other terms the internet isn’t allowed to have anymore like trigger and gaslight. Mansplaining is a specific phenomenon that happens within certain contexts and I feel it’s just been turned into “any conversation that’s mildly annoying you are having with someone who happens to be a man/masculine.”
