King Sejong invented Hanguel in the 15th century. His goal wasn’t to inflict another language on his subjects. Rather, he created a 28-letter alphabet that was simple enough for even the lower class who didn’t attend school to learn. (Four letters were eventually dropped to its current 24-letter count.) Until then, most books and documents were written in classical Chinese, which was complicated and accessible primarily by the privileged upper class. He wanted everyone to be able to read, write and communicate in a common language. Knowledge would help equalize his people.
Of course, some of the nobles were angry about this. They were afraid the peasants would be able to figure out that they were being taken advantage of.

Substack alternatives?
So Substack is making some... questionable decisions regarding hosting alt-right and outright Neo-Nazi content. This article on Mashable seems to summarize things pretty well:
I was thinking of mirroring some of my original content on Substack, for people who aren't on Tumblr to find, but now that's... kind of an iffy proposition. Even if people don't leave Substack in a hurry over this, the rise of the alt-right side of the site means that a trans blogger like me might be in for some trouble if I stick around.
So... anyone know of Substack alternatives? Ones that people actually use? The article mentions two but I've never heard of them. I've heard of Buttondown, I think it was, on Blusky.

‘‘Looks like Kurt Cobain’’ in relief the band expressed when they saw their new singer (Mazvērsīte, 2018, p 50). Not only did Freimanis look like Cobain at the time, with his bleached hair but their debut album ‘‘Putni’’ (1998) [transl. ‘‘Birds’’] was influenced by Nirvana and Whitesnake. Whilst grunge was mainstream in the United States in the 1990s, it`s influence also extends to Latvia.
In 2004, Freimanis wrote the song ''The War Is Not Over'' and gave it to Latvian beloved musicians Valters Frīdenbergs and Kārlis Būmeisters, known as Valters & Kaža (members of Putnu Balle). The song won the Latvian National selection and represented Latvia in the international Eurovision contest in 2005, held in Kyiv, Ukraine, fisnishing in the 5th position.

"I often joke about how being a monk is my ultimate calling, but asceticism seems too easy a pillar to attach myself to. Maybe the awareness that I have sought from Headspace sessions and running over the years was housed in the presence that comes from the cessation of a constant performance for strangers. The search for a good life ‘out there’ was a cop-out of the good life everywhere around me. And even if four months is too early to celebrate this new way of seeing, so be it. If we're not supposed to dance, why all this music?"
— celebrating early and the search for a good life

☁️palace ancestors☁️
hi! just stopping by to say I recently started a substack newsletter named palace ancestors
right now it’s general musings about life: anything from wonder, to love, to beauty, to the body (all with a poetic twist, obvs)
the plan is to add a lot more to it in the future (life updates, a photo diary, secret poems) but for now it’s just a semi-poetic look at the world from a curious person
here’s a sneak peek of my first post! and if you feel like it, subscribe at palaceancestors.substack.com. it would mean a lot to me if you did 💖

This Sunday, “Past Lives” is up against films like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” at the Academy Awards. While I don’t think Celine Song’s extraordinary movie will win for Best Picture, I do think she has a great shot at earning an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Of course, “Past Lives” is an American film set partially in South Korea and with half the dialogue in Korean.
But this got me thinking about some of my favorite Korean films (plus the superb U.S. film "Minari") that I wanted to share with you. (The anchor links will take you to each review if you don’t want to read them all. As always each film is rated on a scale of ☆ to ☆☆☆☆.)
° “Miss Granny” (수상한 그녀) ☆☆☆☆ ° “My Love, Don’t Cross That River” (님아, 그 강을 건너지 마오) ☆☆☆ ° “Once Upon a Time in High School” (말죽거리 잔혹사) ☆☆☆☆ ° “Parasite” (기생충) ☆☆☆☆ ° “Train to Busan” (부산행) ☆☆☆½ ° “The Way Home” (집으로) ☆☆☆ ° “Minari” ☆☆☆☆

Hawk and Evelyn: #001
I wrote a short story! It's the first in a series following two characters and their tendency towards chaos and trouble!
'In front of him, a swing creaked eerily and a scratching sound came from the slide, as if something was going down it even in the empty darkness. All these sounds would once cause him to freeze or runaway, but now he ignored them. The true horror was within.'
