This may be stupid but I rewatched prince of Egypt last night and it left me thinking that a lot of children’s movies nowadays that I’ve seen have a distinct lack of moral imagination. The ones that come to mind are usually more about feeling feelings than some objective truth. That’s a terrible explanation, and I wholeheartedly admit it—children’s movies should be about big feelings and how to handle them, but still—this really speaks more broadly to media as a whole. I am not trying to argue this is a problem writ large, because quite frankly I actually don’t consume a lot of watchable narrative media anymore (I read more than I watch television and watch tiktoks more than I read). But so often I watch a show that is, by all rights, good with well-rounded characters and a good story, yet I leave feeling something missing. There’s a distinction between how to be a good person by being emotionally healthy and how to be a good person by being morally healthy, and I think that a lot of movies I’ve seen focus on the first one. Sometimes, doing the right thing will hurt and cost you, and it won't get better. Sometimes, you'll do the wrong thing, and you should feel ashamed about that. Sometimes, apologies can heal relationships but can't undo harm.

Like, encanto: let's all heal together as a family by recognizing the importance of supporting individuality and being more than what you can do! Prince of Egypt: how far are you willing to go to do the right thing? What are you willing to sacrifice?

This is why, really, I find it so insulting that Disney keeps remaking their old animated movies. Why I find so much of modern media so insulting.

It's created to push aside old and beautiful movies quietly, and then to sell us stuff.

Disney has lost me as a customer. I'm going to buy as many of their classic films as I can get my hands on, and then I'm gonna leave them to the consumerist, ruinous life that they're desperate for me to lead.
