Understanding the Inverse Square Law
(Without Math)
When I was first getting deep into photography, I kept running into lessons about the inverse square law. They would always tell you the effects and the math but they never explained the cause. Why does the light do this?
It's like when the doctor gives you a pill to fix something. You swallow it, wait a bit, and eventually you feel better. But you rarely know what the pill is actually doing.
So when it comes to lighting, you have to decide if you want to be the doctor who understands the why or the patient who just swallows the pill and gets the desired effect.
Every tutorial will say if you double the distance of a light from a subject, the intensity will drop by 1/4. They will give you a formula so you can do exposure calculations.

Sometimes they will refer to somewhat helpful diagrams with clues on what is happening.

But most just teach the easy version.
If you move the light closer, you will get quicker falloff into shadow and the background will be darker.
If you move it farther back, everything will be more evenly lit, but the background will be lighter.
The teacher will shoot some examples and show you something like this.

By the end of this post, I want everyone who reads it to *truly* understand what is happening.
Because if you understand it on that level, it will change how you think about light and photography. It will have the added bonus of explaining magnets and WiFi and even the sound coming out of your speakers.
If I am an effective teacher, this is something you will think about in your everyday life, even if you don't care about photography.
In a previous post, I talked about how light was a bit like a shotgun blast. The closer you are, the more concentrated the pellets. If you are farther away, the shot disperses.
But this wasn't the analogy I wanted to use. It was just the easiest to find visual examples of.
My preferred analogy was spray paint. And I'm hoping with some janky home-made visuals, I can do a better job of explaining the concept.
Let's start by explaining the humble photon. It's the fundamental particle (or wave) of light. Think of them like individual tiny globs of paint in a spray can. A photon is emitted when something loses energy. And unmodified light sources typically shoot out photon globs in all directions.

A point light source is a theoretical concept where a single point in space shoots light evenly in every direction. For our purposes we're just going to imagine a basic light bulb as the point source.
But our eyes and cameras have a limited field of view, so from here on out we are going to think of the light emitting from the bulb as having a cone shape. We are just concerned with what a camera can actually see.

Well, well, well... what does that cone of light look like?

I'm sure we have all used spray paint before. So let's imagine we are spraying a white ball against a gray wall. We spray for 1 second and hold the can at different distances.

In each scenario we are spraying for the same length of time and the exact same number of photon paint globs are emitted from the nozzle.
Let's think about what each scenario would look like from the camera's point of view.
Here is our unpainted ball and wall.

Here is the spray can held at Distance 1.

Note how the red paint is very concentrated and appears bold and saturated.
Distance 2.

Now the same amount of paint is dispersed over a wider area. The bold red spot in the center is more muted. And some of the paint is spilling onto the background.
Distance 3.

Everything appears to have a light red tint. The background and the white ball appear to have similar intensities of red. The coverage is very even. The same number of photon paint globs are being asked to cover a larger area so they are spreading out and diluting the color.
Okay, now let's exchange tiny photon paint globs for real photons.
I'm bringing back my baseball and showing these same 3 distances.

The nice thing about eyeballs and cameras... they can compensate for different light intensities. Our eyes have night vision and cameras have long shutter speeds, large lens apertures, and ISO amplification.
And if we compensate for the dimming caused by the dispersed light...

Photography teachers will tell you that if you move the light farther away, the background will get brighter. In reality, everything is the same level of dim and the camera exposure is brightened.
What if we wanted to spray the same area from far away without losing as much of the red saturation? We could add a super nozzle to our spray can that emits a bunch more photon globs in the same span of time.

This would be like turning up the power of the light. You have to emit a bunch more photons in that same time scale to compensate. Then you don't have to adjust your camera settings when you move the light farther away.
Let's look at a practical example of when you might think about the inverse square law to help solve a problem.
You have two subjects in a scene, and you put the light just out of view of the camera. You might be thinking that a larger light source is softer, so you want it as close as possible.

Unfortunately only one person is lit in the scene. She is getting the concentrated photons before they can disperse.
So if we want both people to have similar lighting, we can move the light farther away. You will have to comprimise a little softness. And you will have to change your camera settings or increase the power of the light.

Note that the intensity of light in the area they are standing in is very similar now.
By using a large light modifier, the photographer was able to move the light back and keep its general softness, but also evenly light both subjects.
And now I need to talk about one aspect of my spray paint analogy that does not work with the inverse square law. And it has to do with the specular highlight on the baseball.

Spray paint does not reflect paint. It just sticks to things. And reflection throws a tiny wrench into my explanation. Because parallel light rays do not obey the inverse square law. When you light something, the most central photons from the subject's perspective are going to be traveling in parallel. They have a direct path from the light to the camera lens or your eyeball.

Now if the reflection material is perfectly matte, the light will disperse and act as the inverse square law suggests. But if the surface is even a little glossy, the most concentrated parallel rays are going to bounce directly into your eye as a bright white spot.

And if you study this diagram a little closer, you might figure out why specular highlights are usually white.
If you look at the specular highlight on the baseball, even though the rest of the image gets dimmer as the light gets farther away, that spot stays bright.

Though the spot seems to disappear at Distance 1. Curious, eh?
It's still there. It's still reflecting directly into your eyeball. But the light around it is so concentrated and bright, the specular highlight blends in.
Which means if you have some nasty highlights on your photo subject, moving your light closer might make them go away. If someone has a shiny forehead, this can equalize the overall exposure and hide the shiny.
This guy has a bright spot on his nose. It is there in both photos.

But his face is so much brighter in the left photo that the spot blends in. It's a bit of a mind bender because the camera exposure is adjusted so the finished photos appear the same amount of bright.
You have to remember if you only move the light farther away and don't increase its power or increase the camera's exposure level, the photos would look more like this.

So if you make the rest of the face as bright as the highlight, it blends in.
Neat!
So, was I successful?
Does the inverse square law make more sense?
This is why WiFi gets weaker at a distance. This is why magnets lose their attraction when you pull them apart. This is why speakers get quieter when you move away from them.
I can't tell you how much knowing the why has affected my thinking about lighting. I see so many video and photo people talking about lighting setups who are just following memorized placements.
"Put a light above the subject at a 45 degree angle to get Rembrandt lighting."
But the second they encounter light doing something unexpected, things fall apart. They resort to trial and error and brute force the solution.
Knowing how the pill works can prevent that frustrating process.
I no longer care about the math. I can just visualize the cone of influence and predict what will happen. Understanding the behavior of light and not just the end effects has made everything more intuitive. I just wish it hadn't taken me so long to understand this. But, hopefully, this post has shortened that journey for you.

Villain Creation System Chapter 6
Pairing/s: Invincible x Reader x Invincible Variants
TRIGGER WARNINGS: Attempted sexual assault
CHAPTER 5: This Boy is a Choking Hazard Series Masterlist <<read the synopsis and trigger warnings first>>
Wisteria was fancier than what you expected from a nightclub. Cleaner, too. It was glass and steel and purple to pink neon lights. Artificial wisteria flowers hung from the ceiling and walls.
The place was freezing and reeked of sweat, booze and a plethora of perfumes.
You were close to throwing up from sensory overload when someone yelled your name amidst the chatter and you found Amber waving at you from the bar.
You wove past the jittering bodies to join her.
“Mark invited you, huh?” She didn’t seem mad or jealous, but she did sound defeated.
“Is that bad?”
She shook her head, smiling weakly. “Nah. He’s a good guy, I wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t. Just don’t forget what I told you. Mark has a way of wriggling into people’s hearts, especially pretty girls’.”
“I won’t. Thanks, Amber.”
“No problem.” She glanced down at your clothes. “You look great, by the way. I love your jacket.”
You resisted the urge to scoff and thought back to several hours ago.
This body’s taste in clothes was similar to yours, if a little juvenile. The system said that it was because it relayed some of your memories to the World Consciousness. Being a tutorial level mission world certainly helped too.
[Do not expect this to be the same in every mission world, though. As I have said before, the World Consciousness is imperfect. A lot of its programming ability goes to replicating your defining physical features like eye color and complexion, but that leaves everything else subject to variation.]
“I get it already, limited energy or whatever, right?” You waved it off, trying to find the best outfit for the club.
The system huffed–it did not appreciate getting brushed off like some nagging wife–and pixelated smoke puffed out of the corners of its screen, dispersing in the air as tiny dots of light. Deciding to get back at its Host, the system waited for you to pick up a t-shirt and then played that buzzer sound quiz shows would use when a participant got an answer wrong.
[Too plain.]
You raised an eyebrow but agreed. Your hand went for another top.
[Too gaudy.]
Fine. You reached for something else–EEEEHH.
You crossed your arms over your chest and glared at the floating holographic monitor.
The system made an innocent face.
[Too ugly.]
[Too vibrant.]
[Too frumpy.]
It didn’t take more than two minutes of getting bombarded with that obnoxious EEEEHH for you to put your foot down. You settled for something comfortable but more party-coded than your usual wear. The most noteworthy piece on you was a denim jacket decorated with a few pins.
Amber was admiring the one shaped like a semicolon while you used disinfectant wipes on the barstool next to her.
“So,” you started, taking a seat. “How was your test?”
She let out an exaggerated sigh. “What’s done is done. Tonight, I’m just going to focus on dancing. Hey, you’re still coming to my party tomorrow, right?”
“Uh-huh.” To be honest, your social battery was drained to half capacity just by entering this place. If this was a purely social endeavor you would’ve already prepared a whole story about your not-grandmother being in a hospital and wanting to see you tomorrow, but this was a job. If playing nice and pretending to have fun is what your job needs then so be it.
Besides, it would feel wrong to say no to her now.
“I like your blouse,” you said.
She wore a gold sequin halter top with a pair of high-waisted jeans.
“Thanks! A friend of mine picked it out for me, I thought it was too much but she said it’d be a waste not to get it. I think you’ll really like her, she’s an architecture major.” Her eyes flickered over your shoulder and she beamed, waving at someone. “There she is now.”
[Ding.]
“Hey, Amber.” The voice was undoubtedly feminine and clear. The kind of voice befitting an important woman.
Red-orange flickered from the corner of your eye.
Amber stood to give the new arrival a quick hug and then introduced the two of you.
The emerald-eyed stranger offered you a smile and her hand. “Hi, nice to meet you.”
[Samantha Eve Wilkins has arrived.]
Long fiery hair fell delicately over bare freckled-kiss shoulders and her green eyes popped thanks to the lavender silk of her blouse. She was even more striking in person, there was no doubt in your mind that she was an important supporting character. Hell, she could probably pass for the main character.
You gave her hand two shakes. “Hi.”
The bartender arrived, sliding a cool root beer towards Amber and asking you, “What can I get you?”
“Lemon lime–” “–peach soda”
You and Eve exchanged glances, then you giggled at the same time.
The bartender nodded and left to get your drinks.
“Amber tells me you’re a total genius,” Eve said, sitting next to you instead of Amber and effectively sandwiching you between the two beauties. If you were as old as this body was, you would have thrown up from anxiety. Luckily, you have learned to be more adaptable before you died.
“I’m not a genius,” you replied, accepting the bottle of lemon lime from the bartender with a smile and barely audible ‘thank you.’
Amber waved her hand. “You’re not giving yourself enough credit. You always get the highest score in every test and pop quiz–and you only make what, one or two mistakes? It’s insane.” She leaned closer and said to Eve, “The professor thought she was cheating so he had her retake a different version of a test in essay form.”
“No way.” Eve’s jaw dropped. “Is that even allowed?”
“We’re not sure, but jokes on him, our girl here–” she gave you a friendly elbow jab “–got perfect marks on that.”
You groaned internally. You weren’t a genius, but you were technically a college graduate, one who already suffered through chemistry, biology, psychology and so many other -ies.
Daily study sessions, a stringent schedule, different tutors and a sprinkle of all-nighters here and there can go a long way. You also genuinely enjoyed learning, and in this reality, you didn’t have to worry about time or money, so you can focus your energy on studying. The only catch is that you have to go above and beyond for one particular, very specific subject: Mark Grayson.
Your interest in other people who are too distant to be considered friends is usually limited. Relationships are hard, at least for you. Humans can say one thing but mean something else. For example, if one is invited for a drink with their boss, technically, they can say no, but they don’t because it is a faux pas to reject a social invite from an important person. One has to smile and nod when another speaks, even when the topic is boring or nonsensical or disagreeable.
Etiquette and expectations. Tradition versus reason.
Confusing, annoying, but necessary, you admit.
You stared at the cartoon logo on your plastic bottle.
Speaking of confusing things, where the heck is Mark?
[Ding. The system is offline.]
[The system was called “useless” and “unnecessary” by the Host.]
[Since this system is so “useless” and “unnecessary,” it shall stay away for now.]
[(˶˃⤙˂˶)]
Little punk.
You rolled your eyes and let it be, deciding to survey the area. According to Mark, tonight the whole club was reserved for the college or something; an immediate celebration after the first major exams of the academic year.
Expectedly, the entire floor was swarmed with young adults, from freshmen to seniors. Some held beer, others went with sodas or juice.
“Great place, right?” Eve asked, pulling you out of focus mode.
“Yeah, it is.” You turned to face her. Sharp green eyes smiled at you.
“I gotta say, I haven’t been to a lot of nightclubs but I can already tell that this is relatively high end.”
“Amber tells me you’re an architect.”
“Well, studying to be one.”
“That’s cool.”
“It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. There’s a lot of math involved.”
“Not a big fan?”
“It’s not my favorite subject.”
“Here, here.” You raised your unopened bottle and she toasted with her peach soda. “I despise mathematics.”
Amber laughed. “Really? I thought you’d eat it up for sure.”
“Math is not as fascinating as chemistry. Or biology.”
“I’ve been meaning to ask, but what kind of things do you do for fun? Eve and I have been itching for a girls’ night.”
You opened your mouth to reply but the lights dimmed and the multi-colored lasers focused on the stage.
A young man with green hair and studded leather pants announced into the mic, “Ladies, gentlemen and dear nonbinaries; friends and enemies, congrats on finishing the first Hell Week of the year!”
The two girls beside you cheered with the crowd. Not one for screaming, you opted to clap your hands.
“We got a lot of great performers lined up today, folks. Starting off strong, we present–Indigo Muse!”
Your peers erupted into applause.
The black velvet curtains behind him parted, revealing Mark and his band.
The guy behind the drums lifted his sticks and began the count, “Three, two–”
youtube
Your ears perked at the familiar guitar riff–and soon, the entire floor was dancing.
I’m on my way, but I don’t know
What to do or where to go
Despite being the bassist, Mark was the lead singer and of course, he had the voice of an angel.
You felt your back being pushed and your arms getting pulled.
Eve yelled behind you, “Come on!”
“Let’s dance.” Amber dragged you off your stool.
“Wait, I don’t–”
The two were stronger than they looked and you found yourself standing in the middle of the dance floor, getting squished by varied-smelling bodies.
I’m so nervous, I feel sick
I hope I don’t come off like a jerk
You gripped hard on your lemon lime, trying not to vomit.
You lifted your chin and found Mark’s eyes on you.
I went all out, I washed my hair
I searched and found some clean underwear
There was that gaze again, like you were the only thing worth focusing on in the whole room.
It was too much.
She’s so hot, I can’t resist
I don’t know what I’ll do if she gives me that first kiss
Suddenly feeling extra thirsty, you tried to open your soda, but the condensation made your hand slip. The bottle dropped to the floor and a stray leg kicked it away.
“Crap.” Your two dance partners were too preoccupied to notice you crawling away.
“Excuse me, excuse me! Sorry!” You braved through stiletto heels and heavy boots. The smart thing to do was to get a new soda, but you didn’t want to be responsible for someone slipping on the bottle and causing a domino effect of fallen dancers and a really busy ER.
The bottle hit the legs of a nearby sofa, finally stopping.
You sighed in relief, but just as you approached forward, a girl bumped into you and dropped her bottle.
She rubbed her head. “Ow… Sorry.”
“I’m fine.”
You picked up both drinks and stared at them. Huh. Both lemon lime. Both unopened.
“Here.” You gave her one randomly.
“Thanks. Sorry again for, uh, falling on top of you.”
“No harm done.”
She grinned and walked away, her long blonde ponytail bouncing with each step as she disappeared into the sea of people.
You reached inside your jacket for a wet wipe and cleaned the soda bottle from top to bottom.
You twisted the cap open and the system dinged just as you realized–
Shit.
***
Mark didn’t stop looking even when you did. He half-expected you to email with some generic excuse like a relative in the hospital or a dead grandparent, so seeing you here, in the flesh, was a win in his book.
He was happy to see you all dressed up. He couldn’t wait to ask the story behind every pin on your jacket. Would you actually get giddy like you did during philosophy debates? Would your face remain deadpan? Would you lose your patience and get mad?
His well-practiced singing never faltered as he watched you weave through the crowd.
What were you doing?
They already reached ⅔ of the song when you stopped near a sofa to wipe your soda clean.
He recalled applause and his team patting his back. The emcee approached him while he saw you suddenly burst into a panicked sprint from across the room.
“Mark? Hey, dude?”
“Sorry, I need to use the restroom.” He shrugged off his strap and swiftly put down his bass.
The emcee pointed his thumb behind him. “There’s a staff only wash over–”
Mark leaped off the stage and went the other way.
The emcee glanced at his bandmates, who could only shrug.
Mark did his best to dash towards the restrooms, but with this many people he couldn’t blitz his way recklessly.
By the time he reached the girls’ toilets, he had calmed down enough to try and knock first, but he heard screaming and he burst through the door with a kick.
“Princess!”
He froze, and so did you, and so did the large guy you were hitting with a mop. Beneath that football player-shaped guy was a blonde girl crying on the floor. Her blouse was ripped open and Mark could see red handprints around her throat.
The bastard recovered from shock earlier and swung at you. Your legs faltered and you hit the sink with a loud thud.
Mark didn’t breathe–he didn’t think–
all he saw was red.
“You like hitting girls, huh?”
THUNK
“What about me, tough guy?”
THUNK
“Come on!”
THUNK
“Fight back, asshole!”
“Mark–”
“Fight back–”
“Mark.” Cold, clammy palms covered his cheeks.
Clear eyes grounded him. “Stop.”
“Princess?”
You gave him a small smile. “We’re okay now.”
Something cool and wet touched his knuckles. He looked down and saw you wiping away the blood.
He glanced back at you and saw the early signs of a shiner. He used his free hand to cradle that side of your face. “He hurt you.”
“I’m not the victim here.” You used your mouth to gesture behind him.
The blonde girl was unconscious, but you had draped your jacket over her torso.
Mark swallowed. “Did he–”
You shook your head. “I arrived just when he pushed her down. She’ll be… she’ll remember this night, but she’s one of the luckier ones.”
“Luckier, huh.”
You frowned. “You know what I mean.”
“I do. It just stinks that this is what we consider lucky.”
You silently finished wiping the blood from his knuckles and threw them inside a ziplock bag.
Mark cocked an eyebrow. “You… carry ziplock bags with you?”
“You’ll never know.”
He ran a hand through his hair. “I saw you run here from the stage.”
“You got good eyes.”
He cleared his throat. “Yeah, well, I got better instincts.” He met your gaze. “How did you know what was about to happen?”
You showed him a bottle of lemon lime soda inside a bigger ziplock bag. “She and I accidentally switched bottles. They were both unopened at first glance, but when I twisted the cap, it was loose.”
He examined the container.
“Oh, and it didn’t fizz.”
“What?”
“The soda didn’t fizz. A loose cap is one thing, but then add the fact that it didn’t fizz?”
“You pieced that together fast. I would’ve just thought that it was an old bottle.”
You grinned. “I’ve been told that I’m something of a genius.”
“Are you?”
“No.”
He chuckled.
“Are you okay?” You asked, surprising him.
“You’re asking me? I’m not the victim here,” he parroted your words back to you.
“That didn’t stop you from worrying about me.” Your eyebrows furrowed. “Are you okay, Mark?”
You put your hand over his clean knuckles.
His breath hitched.
You were close enough to–
He heard groaning behind him and you pulled back, standing up.
“Hey,” he heard you speak to the blonde girl. “Do you remember where you are? It’s okay. You’re safe, it’s all right, the police are on their way.”
He heard crying as he looked down at the man whose face was now unrecognizable.
He looked at his freshly wiped fingers.
“You’re okay.”
He then turned around and saw your shaking hands comfort the weeping girl on the floor.
Mark clenched his fists.
***
[Affection: 44%. Darkening: 15%.]
You stared at the pink and black bars while the paramedic cleaned your wounds.
Amber was in tears, holding your hand and apologizing for not paying more attention, despite your insistence that this was nobody else’s fault except the criminal who was currently on his way to the ER.
Eve said she would go check up on Mark. The system informed you that they were conversing on the roof.
The blonde girl, Ariel, was giving her statement to the cops. When she was finished, she walked over to you and surprised you with a hug.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “Thank you.”
Unsure what to do, you awkwardly patted her head. “No problem. Anyone would have done the same.”
“I’m sorry about messing up your jacket.”
“Eh, I needed a new one.”
She and Amber laughed.
Ariel stepped back. “Thank you.”
She nodded at Amber and then joined a female officer inside a police car.
Amber’s phone chirped and she squeezed your hand. “You hungry? Eve and Mark want to eat nachos.”
“I didn’t know Eve and Mark were close.”
Amber blinked. She then waved her hand. “No, no, well, yes, they are close, but not like that.”
“Then like what?”
“Well, apparently, they work at the same place. I still don’t know what they actually do, but they see each other occasionally. Eve’s taken though. Some guy named Rex.”
“I see.” For some reason, your heart felt lighter.
***
“Amber said they’re good for nachos,” Eve said, putting away her phone.
Mark stayed quiet as he stared at his hands. You told him to wash them thoroughly but he can still feel the stain on him.
Eve walked closer. “You did good. You saved them.” She stopped talking, but Mark knew that tone.
He hated it because it meant she had something else to say, something annoying. “But…?”
“...but you should’ve held back.”
“He was a rapist.”
“Yes, and I hate him, too, but he’s also human. If you kept going the way you did you would’ve killed him!”
Mark paused.
He was brought back inside that tiny rest room. Before the police arrived, the staff nurse offered to take Ariel inside the attached clinic for treatment. You reassured them that you would follow, and when it was just you and Mark, you locked the door, walked over to Ariel’s attacker and stomped down on his crotch; hard enough that Mark actually winced, hard enough that he heard squishing noises when you lifted your foot.
Face blank, you said to him, “If they ask, tell them it was self-defense.”
He almost laughed. Hearing that was liberating.
He wondered if Eve would have approved. Eve wasn’t a goody-two shoes, but she drew hard lines when it came to crime-fighting. Excessive force and torture were something she balked at.
“I recognize that guy, y’know,” Mark mumbled. “I saved a different woman a few months ago.” In addition to being a prized player at the university, he was part of a powerful frat, a legacy. “I will never forget that smug face of his when the judge let him free.”
“That sucks.”
Mark sneered. That’s all Eve ever says. “If only I–”
“If only, what? If only you killed him? You’re better than that.”
Mark could hear his mother’s voice echo from the back of his mind: “You’re better than him.”
He shot to his feet and turned towards the door.
“We aren’t done here.”
“I think we are,” he snapped back and swung open the rooftop door.
“Oh.”
You were standing right in front of him. “Hi,” you squeaked.
“Hi.” He flashed you his signature smile. “Missed me already? I thought we were meeting at the restaurant?”
“I just needed some fresh air, I didn’t think there was anybody here, sorry. I’ll leave.”
Eve interrupted you, “No, it’s fine. We’re done.”
She gave Mark a look and then smiled at you. “You good?”
“Yeah.”
“I’ll see you later.”
Mark held the door, stepped to the side and made a sweeping motion with his arm, like a doorman welcoming guests.
“You really like roofs,” you noted, strolling towards the railing. “Do you enjoy looking down at the world?”
“You make me sound like a megalomaniac.”
“Your words, not mine.” You rest your elbows on the guardrail.
Mark joined and you uttered to him, “I have a confession.”
His heart stopped for a moment. “What?”
“When you were punching that guy, I was really tempted to let you beat him to death.”
“Oh.”
You eyed him and he quickly added, “–kay. Okay. I see. So why didn’t you?”
“I was worried about you. You didn’t look like yourself.”
He guiltily lowered his head. “Sorry for scaring you.”
You let out a loud Ha! “You don’t scare me, not even when you had blood all over you.” You glanced down at the city. “What I meant was that you seemed to be in a trance. I didn’t want you to wake up and realize you killed someone in your sleep. That would suck.”
This time, Mark let himself laugh.
***
He was laughing.
Jesus, what a psycho. He almost killed someone and he was laughing?
He really was destined for villainy.
[Affection: 49%. Darkening: 16%.]
You were supposed to pretend to love someone like this? For how long? And how many times before you were free? How many more horrible things did you have to experience and witness?
Mark’s brown eyes widened. “Princess?”
“Hm?”
“Are you–”
You turned away from him and brought a shaking hand to your face. “I’m all right, I promise.”
He didn’t say anything. Instead, you felt his arms slowly, almost hesitantly, stretch around your shoulders.
Permitting this moment of weakness, you leaned your head on his chest.
His arms tightened, folding over you protectively. “It’s okay, princess. You’re safe.”
You shook your head, because he was awful and kind and confusing and he had no idea what he was saying.

Note
your shading is AMAZING specially when its conveying organic forms..... do you have any tips for people who dont know wrf going on (with shading)
ok so HI. hi. my old tutorial pisses me off so i will make a new one
i made a guy whose sole purpose is to be shaded so dont worry he likes it. and his name. his name will be mr. Boob. mr boob does not have to be blue
theres probably way better explanations of how to do it but unfortunately trying to "emulate" shading does ask you to somewhat understand ur character in a 3d way. like what would the 2d shape be if you "sliced" it? mr boob is made of so many circles. his tail also does a kind of weird perspective foreshortening thing because its pointing at you. is this being conveyed
you obviuously dont have to draw a horrendous grid on your characters skin to do this . BUT it helps you put down (or at least envision) the lines of the form shading :
dont worry about cast shadows or the shading color because this is FORM SHADOW time only. think about what surfaces of the character are obviously facing away from the light source and put down the "separation line" of the shading based on that. thr most important thing is that youre trying to separate light from dark
im going to pick the first one for cast shadows bc it will be the most obvious to me
ok so. his ears and snout are blocking other surfaces of his body from the light, which means a shadow is cast!!!! bam. i saw someone describe cast shadows as what the light's pov "can't see." his entire body is putting down a cast shadow on the ground too
im impatient so i blended the form shadows now. its usually the easiest to just NOT blend cast shadows as a way of conveying that they are still cast shadows. but you can still blend them if you want to show "distance" between the obstruction and the surface its blocking. but its just a way of saying form and cast shadows should not be treated the same even if their softness coincides
im going to lump reflection and ambient light together because theyre like. similar. reflections dont just happen in mirrors
since the sky is blue, making the ambient lighting, i tinged mr. boobs existing shadow to be a bit blue. (*this is kind of important because it can help you decide a shading color, which should USUALLY be based on the environment) (unless your character is just in the transparent void then it doesnt matter)
since the ground is pink, i made pink light bounce off of him. pointed and labelled. i dont rlly know how to go more in depth than that
contact shadows are literally shadows formed from direct-touching contact. very little light can reach in there, even from how reflections disperse, which means youre free to use the darkest color available (black). in this case mr. boob is making contact with the floor. because he is sitting on the floor.
i touched him up a bit and wow!!!!!!!!!! look at mr. boob!!! he is so beautifully sculpted.
and one more thing
thats right. i made mr boob PINK. hes fucking ruined now. just kidding i would never say that to him
what im trying to convey here (its the easiest with really light colors) is a transitional color. this can also show subsurface scattering depending on how you use it which is fun to look at. the mistake i made on my last tutorial was "Just pick a warm saturated color!" which is really wrong in examples like Blue mr boob. because it would be weird to use a warm color to transition from blue to blue.
if you have a character that isn't bright enough then obviously the shadows wont be as visible. its BEST to bring more attention to highlights and reflections to reveal the form a bit. they play the biggest role with darker colors
thats all i can think of. fun things to look up:
structuralization + contour lines + foreshortening etc. 3d lingo
form shadows
cast shadows
ambient light
contact shadows
subsurface scattering
im also just speaking out of my ass otherwise. i didnt look up any of these terms until the end now im inferring and hoping i got them right
and remember every time you shade mr boob will be rooting for you

good girls go bad!
2.37k words
everybody in this world has their thing, some like to draw, others like paint. eren jaeger liked to believe he had many things, things he thought to be normal that most if not all would find to put it lightly.. strange.
not to be blunt but if you asked anybody from the dimly lit house party what eren jeagers specific thing was they'd all tell you the same thing.
sex.
you wouldn't even have to sleep with the guy to know how good he was in bed, every girl that comes stumbling from a random room on wobbling legs was most definitely proof enough.
this was NOT your scene. you stood there stiff in the corner, red solo cup in hand, surrounded by your five girlfriends who simply wouldn't take no for an answer.
they knew you'd follow the rules, the rules that your father had put in place when he shipped you off halfway across the state.
the silver purity ring on your finger hit the cup to the rhythm of the music as you slightly bopped your head.
that very ring a tall brunette had his eyes on all night. the man had been watching you since his body hit the sticky leather of the wore down couch. when your eyes flicked across the room his would immediately drop down to his own ring clad fingers picking at the arm rest.
"come onnn (❤︎︎), just a few shots. you need to loosen up anyway!" your closest friend sasha drags you across the scene leaving the other group of girls to their own devices.
begrudgingly you trek behind her, pulling down that itty bitty denim skirt the girls forced you to purchase 'just in case'.
she spots connie leaning against the marble of the kitchen island all by himself. suddenly she's flinging herself into his arms seaming already drunk off of whatever pungent liquid was mixed up in her now forgotten solo cup.
"well if it isn't my favorite little munchkin," she squeals when he drops her back down. "my friend here is in dire need of whatever you could pour into a shot glass, stat!"
connie smiles at her opting not to say much knowing his words would be slurred. red eyes scan you quickly as if he was pondering what bitter beverage he could give you to loosen you up fast.
you stood close behind sasha watching connie line up six plastic shot cups before pouring a glass bottle of clear liquor (to the brim) of each cup. being the gentleman he was he opens the cooler by his foot pulling out two mini can of pinapple juice.
snatching a shot for himself he tosses it back with a grimace and a quick head shake then walks off giving you a look of good luck.
"two for me, three for you." she hands you the can and pulls you to stand by her. taking a deep breath through your nose you grab each shot one by one and then chase them with the juice. it's almost embarrassing how loud you gagged from the tingle in the back of your throat.
"good?" she laughs at your struggle and you shoot her a glare. "what do you think sash??"
you look back over your shoulder to see that your friend group had dispersed among themselves with fellow party goers, unsurprisingly. lucky for them you made everyone share locations before even coming here AND gave them the major stranger danger safety run down.
what's even more embarrassing is how within the span of five minutes you feel every nerve slip into a relaxed state, the crease of you brow is replaced with a content, one would say- happy expression.
the first sound of ' freak hoe' is played full blast and it's like a flash flood of nearly every girl in the party racing towards the ¿dance floor?. but not only were the girls rushing through, but the guys too. either trying to stop their girls from showing out or simply tryna catch what was being thrown.
you and sasha being part of the crowd followed not far behind. and wherever you went green hooded eyes followed in suit.
in most cases you weren't one to show yourself in private let alone in public, but before you left the comfort of your dormitory the girls showed you a step by step tutorial on basic "ass shaking."
good for you that you comprehension skills are a-1 because in no time you were throwing it all around the world, my god would you regret this in the morning. sasha being there was extremely handy in making sure your skirt didn't ride up to the point where nothing was left to the imagination.
and boy oh boy did eren have a good one. zoning out on you and that stupid silver band circling your ring finger. he suddenly snaps into reality when a man, a random, tries to catch what he claimed for the night.
eren is quicker, his stride longer. you feel him before you see him. his presence is great. big almost. his scent woodsy and minty with a linger smell of weed. intoxicating.
sasha give you a look once the song is over and made into something that can be danced to in a slow grind. you smile and wink she takes the hint and scurry off to find her baldheaded best friend.
the man behind you leans forward and your automatically enticed by the eyes. bright and green but low and lidded. your arms reach you around his neck and tangle in the hair on his nape, the weight of his bun resting there as well.
on the other hand(s) his are traveling down your side and to the opening of your blouse. you stop him, turning to face him only to be met with a broad chest. . looking up to see a man more striking the a god themself, he grins small and sexy. you look more beautiful up close, he can't help the lump twitching against his thigh in this black cargos.
he also can help but notice the way you scan his face all doe like, he lets you drink him in even with the heavy bass pumping throughout both your bodies.
finally you breathe out a simple "hi." shuttering cause you feel his eyes on your lips, then the drop lower to the star sign necklace sitting on your collar bone.
you move before him, grabbing him by the collar of his black tee. hell- it was just as shocking to you as it was him wondering where in the world you got all this confidence from.
"hey." he mutters against your lips before reciprocating the kiss. it's desperate on your end and controlled on his, like trying to pull an elephant with a rope. you whine into his mouth and he can't help but puff out a breath of laughter.
he pulls back and you can't help but chase him. "bathroom?" he looks you dead in your eyes already tipsy on just a taste of what this man can give you. you nod at a flashes pace when you feel the not so subtle pulse down below. and just like that the two of you are off, him shielding you from the sea of sweaty bodies. you pass sasha and connie once more making direct eye contact with her.
her jaw drops hard. she turns to connie who lifts his hand to close her mouth, who mumbles something about hot ass breath.
eren waste no time knowing exactly where the first floor washroom is. another man stumbles his way towards the door and earns a palm to the face and a rough shove by eren.
he locks the door quickly before the complaints start and shoves your lower back against the sink capturing you in another mind numbing kiss. the cold thin metal of your ring stings his skin when you cup his handsome face, and he groans deep and long. rutting his chub against your thigh.
he breaks first spinning you around so that you're facing the mirror. lips swollen, eyes glassy, and edges starting to lift, eren wants to devour you. eat you whole.
he leans into you pushing his weight on your back. wet open mouth kisses from the junction of your shoulder all the way up to your ear and he huffs out "eren."
lost in the sensation you hum at him choking back a moan when he reaches under that god forsaken skirt and he barely applies pressure to your panties. and yet here they are soak down.
"my name, eren. remember it." he muttered to you taking pleasure in watch you quiver like a leaf over a thumb. just as sudden as it came his hand was ripped away. hiking up your skirt he pulls your panties down, and spreads.
"my god," he sighed. nothing in this world could prepare him for the sight that beholds him. sticky, wet folds make a slick noise as he thumbs through them. he watches you twitch and arch your back, in an instant he drops down to his knees.
"just nasty," he commented before shoving his face in your cunt. his mouth automatically finds your clit and he sucks. that sharp nose of his nudging against your clenching hole. and then- he takes in a sharp breath through his nose eye scrolling to the back of his skull.
you've lost all support opting to rest your forehead on the mirror while eren sucks on you pussy like a starved man. it's so much, it's too much. he's sloppy with it, fluids dripping down from his mouth, to his chin, onto his shirt. all you can do is moan.
"ugh -god! eren! eren!" you sob, he slurps. its all so good.
"you're cumming? come on pretty, cum on my fucking tongue." he envelopes you whole and shoves his tongue in repeatedly over and over until you scream.
"shit - eren im fucking cumming!" and you do. hard. but he keeps going not wasting a drop of your release. gasping for some air, hunched over the sink, panties down by your knocking shaking knees, you feel it.
hard, long, heavy, and thick against your lower back you didn't even realize he had dropped his cargos and boxers just below his fat balls. 8 inches of man ready and waiting.
he see you lifting yourself up and he decides you had enough time to recover. his slides his tip an angry shade of red, through your sensitive folds and then pushes in slow.
quickly he grabs his base hard and squeezes. "shit-" he stills, taking a deep breath. "s'fucking tight." he comments rubbing on your swollen clit making you shudder. "loosen up dollface, let me in." his brows furrowed as he watches you biting into the fabric of your sleeve. you’re holding back and he knows it. he knows he's big, and he knows you can take it.
in one swift motion he bottoms out and you cry. cry so loud you could stop the party. his 'thrust' shallow but oh so deep, fat tip nudging right against your cervix.
"o-oh fuck FUCK!" you wail clenching on him hard as you orgasm. "atta girl, there she is." he grins big and bright. "feels good don't it? you love cummin' on me dontcha, princess?" he hisses, reeling his hips back and he pounds into you.
"s-shit, you're soo g-oodd!" you wailed to him, your tits bouncing out that stupid stuffy blouse. he wants to see more, to feel more. his fingers scoop you up by the neck. damp back pulled to his wet chest, and he squeezes. the feeling of his hand even resting on your throat was delicious - but this.
this was different. "e-erenn! jesus f-fucking christ! m'cummin, m'cummin!" you gasp out, taking your hand and wrapping it around his to choke yourself harder. those green eyes widen nearly black in color as he gives a wild smile at your fucked out expression. "you filthy little thing, you like being choked dont ya? what would yer daddy say if he found you his dollface little girl was slutting herself out for me ,hm?"
you feel it, right there in your gut, hot desire flooding from your pussy all onto the floor in streams of clear liquid. your cheeks are red from the lack of oxygen. his thrust get harder but you can feel eren tensing. another brutal thrust and he grunts deep and sexy. "fuck baby." he fucks himself through his high just using your sloppy cunt to his will. his grip on you throat is released and that has you doubling over gasping for sweet oxygen.
jeager relishes the feeling of your walls clamping on him till he decides enough is enough. he pulls out and in an instant thick, creamy globs of cum plop down onto your soaked down underwear.
leaning down once more he come face of face with your fucked out pussy and licks the mixture of bodily fluids. this makes you jolt and then he presses a delicate kiss to you clit. contradicting his actions he sents a hard smack to your ass cheek. eren groans taking a look at the mess you both made on the floor and yourselves. he just grabs and decorative towels hanging above the toilet, wiping himself off and then throwing it on the floor to soak up any liquid.
then he hands you a pitiful piece of tissue paper to clean yourself off. but before you can start he's distracting you with kisses to your earlobe, he grabs your hand and suddenly your finger is feeling .. lighter.
you spoke out to confront him but he slips back out into the world leaving you stranded and confused.
also with an empty finger. bummer, he didn't even catch your name..

My findings working with ResiOne TH-BJD (so far)
Hey all, for anyone interested in working with the new bjd resin from ResiOne, I'm going to make a small post about it here so I can have my text and images in one place. I don't really have another social media platform that allows me to make long posts, so here it is lol.
This is not a tutorial but rather my observations working with this new resin so far.
So, just to start off, again, this isn't a tutorial. This post is to document my own findings with this resin. It assumes you are not a complete beginner at printing. I love to share my info with people, but I can't teach you to print. There is a learning curve, like learning any new artistic medium. So. I'm usually pretty open to questions, but I'm not gonna look at your print and tell you how you failed, lol.
If you are new to printing, J3DTech's guide has been the most helpful to me. There is a lot to read and I didn't read it all at once; I still haven't done all of the stuff in the guide. That being said, I have been printing for 2-3 years and any stuff I did wrong ended up being covered in the guide, so I'm linking it here.
So, I have only used TH-BJD so far to print bust stands for ball-jointed dolls. The properties of the resin hold up to their claims. It's really great and I'm looking forward to using it more.
A few general observations:
-This resin is really thick. This causes a few issues:
--less resin drips off of the print and back into the vat, meaning that you will need more extra resin than you think. When working with any resin, I would do an extra 100mL of resin to cover the larger vat of my Saturn S. For this resin, I've been doing more than that; I don't measure, but it's somewhere between 150-200 extra.
--it causes bubbles, which can go over the edge of your vat. Do NOT fill it all the way to the "max" line; I leave at least a centimeter of space because the bubbles can cause it to flow over.
--the resin being dispersed away from the build plate and then flowing back into the vat pushes on your supports. If you have one single takeaway from this post, it is that you need to support your supports. Make them unmovable. You can physically see the resin shift the ends of your isolated supports around if you watch your printer.
-ResiOne has a short guide on their website and has support settings you can download. I use their support settings and also their cleaning recommendations (10 minutes each side lmaooo). I have really only used their "heavy" support settings because the things I have printed so far have been larger.
I also want to say, just in general, I do not prioritize speed while printing. I want the print to be quality. These bust stands, which use the entirety of my build plate, take 35 hours to print. I don't care. I want them to turn out well. I look at them once or twice a day to make sure nothing crazy happened, and I go about the rest of my day.
Here are the default settings they gave me over Instagram for my Elegoo Saturn S:
They do have different settings based on the size of your build plate, so if you have a smaller printer, you can probably do things faster. I don't have experience with this, but I think this is covered in the J3DTech guide. Larger printers need more time for the resin to fill back into the vat after being dispersed by the build plate, and that is more true with this resin, which is super thick.
So, a few things. I immediately thought the lift and retract speeds were too fast. I used these settings and they printed a small exposure test print just fine, but if you're printing larger parts oriented upright like I do with my doll limbs etc, it's probably going to cause some shift lines. And it did.
So I changed my settings. Notably, I changed them to the TSMC settings so there is dual speed. Basically this means that the printer moves slower as it peels the print off of the fep, and then faster when it is doing nothing other than lifting the build plate up with the print already on it. This helps prevent shift lines because, if it were moving fast that entire time, the print can become distorted, but having them at the slow speed that entire time would make prints take insanely long.
Here are my current settings. These are for their Cream White and Cream Pink colors. If you use Ultra White, the regular exposure is 1.8s and the bottom exposure is 40s.
One thing I do for every print is put a 40s rest time on my bottom layers. I don't know if I need to do this, but it's residual trauma from using SirayaTech Mecha. Anyway. On Elegoo printers you have to manually do this, so I punch it in and come back like 10 minutes later after the 8 bottom layers are done, and put it back to 3s.
Using these settings, I found that the prints themselves had fewer layer lines, but I noticed my supports were still being pushed around.

In the photos here, I drew arrows to show what I mean. These are supports that should be straight. In the first photo, one support actually detached from this shifting and sort of "fell down."
I noticed these only happened to long, isolated supports (you can see I wan doing a large print). Fortunately, nothing actually affected the print itself, but I went back into the file and added more supports, particularly the ones that attach one support to another rather than the single ones. I have indicated supports like these in this image:

The shapes I drew on the bottom in freaky support language are what I mean: the little cross-supports. These will help prevent your supports from shifting. As you can see in this print, it was fine, both because it was a smaller print but also from the cross-supports.
Here is another image of the improved support structure on my larger bust stand torso prints. These ones were using the same settings as the ones that shifted above, but are able to support themselves because I supported the supports more.

So, there are my findings so far! Idk if I can edit this in the future with more findings but I might do an update if I feel the need. I'm hoping that people in the hobby can share their findings as we use this resin more.

how quick did u start seeing changes on t? also as someone who is. Not a fan of needles how did/do you deal with injecting yourself?
Internally: immediately. possibility placebo, but I think hormonally T does impact uh, "arousal" immediately, and "arousal" is not something exclusively reserved for Being Horny. It's also like, mood and energy and such things. YMMMV
Physically: pretty quickly honestly, my voice dropped really fast (one of my only big "hm i dont like this" moments) and I had to start shaving my face at 2 months. I think I am a bit of an outlier in this respect though, and it largely depends on your genetics.
I am not sure how much I can help with needle phobia, I have never had a signifigant problem with needles. Injecting myself the first time vs just getting stabbed was kind of intimidating but I have learned how to do more difficult things over youtube before, and planned parenthood's video tutorials are very helpful.
The good thing is injection/needle anxiety is incredibly common, and lots of people with needle anxiety still need to self inject (i.e. diabetics), so there IS a lot of advice/help/devices out there if you are in that "physically able to inject yourself but it is still scary" zone.
They make auto injector attachments that help you inject (they're not actually 100% automatic but they usually hide the needle so you dont see it at least), and there's also a special perscription type of T (XYOSTED, iirc it is more expensive/harder to get) that comes in pre-fulled syringes, but you still have to hold it against your body and press a button to make it inject. For whatever it is worth, in my experience, I actually had MORE pain with subcutaneous injections (tiny needle), because the skin/fat is where it hurt the most, wheras with intramuscular injections (BIG needle) it goes past the skin/fat really quickly and into muscle which just isn't as sensitive. YMMV
They also make like, "prickle pads" I think? I've never used them but they help disperse the feeling of the poke. I think there are other tricks out there too, like numbing the area with ice or similar.
If you definitely can't do needles there is the option of gel (depending on your insurance or financial status), or having someone else inject it for you, be that a nurse or friend/family member.

I don't know if I'm an idiot or what but can anyone help me with the final boss of the Season of the Cryomancer invasion? Every tutorial I look for either uses Omni-Man or is already after you beat Sub-Zero and unlock either new relics of talismans that I don't have access too and I'm struggling hardcore. Other tutorials also say to get a pink potion, but none of the shops I have access to sell potions, only keys, ambush protection, talismans, etc. 😭
I didn't do my best with dispersing stat points cause I didn't think much about it, I haven't played any invasions or story mode for the other MK games so I'm like very new to all this. I'm trying to use Liu Kang as he has the best/highest stats for attack and health 💀 (Scorpion, Reptile, and Shang Tsung are my other best characters that have good stats cause I used them a lot)
#please help me im so stupid#seven’s nonsense#mk1#mortal kombat#mortal kombat 1#mk1 invasions#mk1 help#mk1 tips??

these are my problems with color bass
1. there has been no central collective/label for a year now. Rushdown, the label created by Chime, was the source for a vast amount of inspiration as well as a way for legitimately innovative, interesting, or just plain good songs to get discovered with the Rushdown Presents volumes. Rushdown has been on hiatus for a year, and nothing has came to take its place - the bigger artists have mostly migrated to Monstercat Uncaged, though some have done songs with NCS and others. other kinds of bass music have swaths of labels actively supporting them, like OWSLA, Never Say Die, and Disciple for brostep.
2. it is a subgenre carried, creatively, by trends. the world learned of it from Virtual Riot, who then shared how the color bass doggo VIP of REDLINE was done - by moving every non-drum sound through instances of Zynaptic Pitchmap. this led to large amounts of people hopping in for "use plugin, make song good like vr!!" and the decimation of Pitchmap for like a year. now, recently, Xynth Audio's Chroma is the new hot plugin. another FFT pitching plugin, but with a cleaner algorithm and a vastly lighter load on CPU. it was pushed by the heavily-involved artist Nasko, followed by artists like Paper Skies and Chime praising it. a disgusting amount of amateur color bass is just [bass sounds then fed through 1 plugin to colorize] as well as every atmosphere, leading to an incredibly homogenous, uninteresting sound. that's just for the people who make their own sounds! on the other hand...
3a. the reliance on previously established artists' sounds to make their own music. so, SO many color bass tutorials from smaller creators are "take a handful of Sharks or Chime or Skybreak or KERO basses, arrange them, (optional) add phase dispersion, add OTT, cut out <100hz, add your own sub. then take a bunch of Sharks ear candy and pads, layer them under the basses. add drums" and that's fucking it. genuinely, 90% of all color bass tutorials are like that. and that's just tutorials, what people are teaching - imagine how many songs by these people or those they've taught have done the exact same thing. it's completely generic to the core, and has led to an intense stagnation.
3b. overwhelmingly, some of the only people teaching color bass sound design are the most popular artists and typically behind paywalls. Chime and Au5 are the biggest of this, w/ Chime's very densely-packed Patreon full of sample packs and tutorials and Au5 having a years-ongoing School of Bass masterclass as well as selling individual track breakdowns for songs like Cryptochrome. information exists for free, of course - Au5's "6 Ways to Color Bass" is very popular due to its breakdown between every type of method, but it lacks detail or application beyond "i have these basses made already and here's what they sound like with [x]". it also completely ignores the source basses, meaning half the battle is totally blind. Convexity and Chime especially have videos (Patreon-exclusive unless you just so happen to have links to the unlisted youtube videos :3c) with what arelikely the best at delving into the what and why, with Convexity's having a better focus on the underlying chords and composition. Skybreak has good Patreon videos too, going over specific sound design techniques like Harmor crystally basses and weird pitched glitches.
#just needed to like. Say that#fuck i need the School of Bass for The Other Side by Au5 and Chime#and the breakdown of Cryptochrome#soulseek fails me here </3 because theyre like 1 hour+ videos that are like $60 each at LEAST i think#i chose not to say anything about the melodic riddim side. not because i like it#i really dont but thats not a thing i can point to - i just dont like riddim lmfao

week 2
expanding on previous concepts and creating new mood baords for new concept (mouse POV) + dino refrences
story boarding these concepts + story baording 360 scene
had not story boarded before, great opertunity to also practice writing, perspective and enviroments
I used this video to understand story boarding better. I chose it because its someone with experience and its a movie i care about a lot, i think it builds suspense really well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPrkxj2MyZI
the story boards werent very detailed in these videos because thier team already has a story and a setting they are going with so they know what the characters look like and where they are but they just need to know who does what when. We dont have that yet, i want it to be clear what the enviroment looks like, what the lighting should be like and what the general mood should be so while still applying story boarding methods i will add more detail.
I dont get to work with camera movement much as the player will be positioned in one spot but i can mess with perspective
mouse POV:
prey POV
+ concept art Prey POV & thalasophobia
With the last render i did with the wounded herbivore i felt like i really didnt do a good job of conveying the mood with that drawing. so i decided that to try and set a mood better it migth help if i dont work with color first to make it less confusing and cluttered for now. I remebered a group project from a while ago where one of the artists sketched the scene first in gray scale. a big inspiration of mine is RJ Palmer so i trurned to his artstation for some inspiration and looked for a couple of gray scale tutorials as i have never done this before. i do render my art sometimes but usually not with backgrounds and generally with colours immediately.
(the last render i have done. It works for what i was trying to do but its low on contrast, a bit bland and definitely not what I need for what i want to achieve now)
Grey scale paintings work great to show the lighting conditions. So to make sure the client and my team understood my concepts i set out to create grey scale paintings of posible scenes in the experiece.
i found these vidoes helpful when trying to undertand what i should be looking for (ussualy, depends per piece ofcouse ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8rL_0Fl06U dont have it be to cluttered, have the values from the fore ground and background differ (breaking this rule for the thalasaphobia, just a little bit)
that video is great but i didnt want to start my process how she did, its too harsh for what i was going for, i migth aswell just make a rough sketch instead. So i looked for another method and found one more to my liking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN2BggfFTgk
he starts with a sketch and builds the mid tone first and then throws the shadow ont there and sculps forms out of those base shapes.
As mentioned, this is my first time painting like this. i started with the shark as water disperses light in a way that is a lit softer and i thought it would make for a good starting point to get a bit more confident. I felt it was lacking some movement so i added fish that could add a nice shimmer. I used refrences for anatomy and proportions for the animals from google images, readablitly, aireal perspective (values based on distance, thing sget lightter the further they are from the camera)
then i started on the carnotaurus and how it could look as it aproaches you with the look of a hungy lion. i was excited to try some harsher lighing and a background. i did the first sketch with hardely any refrences and realised he looked far too much like a T.rex when carnotaurus have far slimmer heads.
after finding a couple of skull refences i rebuilt the head and adjusted some more proportions. which was better but it was still lacking mood and atmosphere so i looked back at RJ Palmers work and looked at some grey scale painting tutorials from people that create art i find apealing and that have experience. You might also notice that im using high contrast lighting on the animal aswell as the other objects, breaking the readability rule a little bit. I did this because i was reminded of tigers and how they camouflage and i thought that would look really cool, i still made sure he stood out from the background ofcourse.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8rL_0Fl06U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN2BggfFTgk
Though its not done it was great practice. I will finish it in my free time later as i have to move on and do other work and its sufficient as concept art that conveys the lighting and mood i was going for for now.

College Study Group: Looking for Better Results? Here's How to Make it Work
College can be a whirlwind of lectures, assignments, and exams. Juggling it all can feel overwhelming. That's where a well-functioning college study group can be a game-changer.

Study groups leverage the power of collaborative learning. By discussing course material, explaining concepts to each other, and working on problems together, you can gain deeper understanding, boost motivation, and ultimately achieve better results.
However, not all study groups are created equal. Some can be distracting or inefficient, leading to frustration instead of success. So, how do you make a great college study group that maximizes learning outcomes?
College Study Group Success: Key Ingredients
Here are some essential elements for creating a college study group that sets you up for success:
Finding the Right People: Look for members with similar learning goals and course schedules. Choose individuals who are motivated, reliable, and actively participate in discussions.
Setting Clear Goals and Expectations: At the outset, establish clear goals for each study session. Decide which topics to cover, what questions to address, and what you aim to achieve by the end of the session.
Scheduling Regular Meetings: Consistency is key. Schedule regular meetings at a time and place that works well for everyone. This ensures dedicated time for focused learning and prevents procrastination.
Creating Ground Rules: Discuss and establish ground rules for your group. This could include things like arriving prepared, respecting everyone's contributions, and maintaining a focused and productive learning environment.
Embracing Diverse Learning Styles: Recognize that everyone learns differently. Accommodate different styles by incorporating a variety of study methods like discussions, practice problems, or visual aids.
Making the Most of Your Study Group
Once you have the right group in place, here are some tips to ensure your college study group is truly effective:
Preparation is Key: Come prepared to each session. Review course material beforehand, identify areas you need clarification on, and bring any questions you have.
Active Participation: Don't be a passive observer. Actively participate in discussions, explain concepts to others, and ask clarifying questions. The more you engage, the deeper your understanding will be.
Respectful Communication: Create a safe space for open communication and respect diverse perspectives. Actively listen to your peers' contributions and offer constructive feedback in a positive way.
Focused and Time-Managed Sessions: Minimize distractions and maintain a focus on the goals you set for the session. Utilize your time effectively to ensure you cover all intended topics while allowing room for discussion and questions.
Sharing Resources: Supplement your study sessions by sharing helpful resources like online articles, relevant video tutorials, or practice problems from other sources.
