some ppl think the horns are stupid and he looked better without them (in tek3 and tek4 for example) but i don't really understand why...? I mean, if DEVIL KAZUYA had horns, then it's only logical that DJ would. It also makes him look more unique from Jin (which a stupid opinion SOME people have is that DJ's a "wasted slot" because he's just "Jin" (despite playing different, acting different, and often having a different design despite having the same body)).
Also, I'm in full support of nonhuman characters actually LOOKING nonhuman, and those horns help him look less human. ALSO ALSO. It's usually a recognizable trait for devils/demons to have horns. Therefore, it makes sense for the Tek devils to have horns.
ALSO ALSO ALSO. IS DJ really more silly looking than Barney The Dinosaur Devil Kazuya? (Meaning, he was literally an all purple nude dude...) Like if sb thinks DJ's horns are bad/silly/whatever, they just gotta accept all the devils are kinda silly in retrospect.
I dunno what Max said precisely since I rarely watch him lol, but I am just making a statement on what seems to be a semi-fairly popular opinion some fans have.
~Bro, I don't understand either. I don't think I ever will. That slot argument is DUMB. If you even BOTHERED to play Devil Jin, you can tell almost immediately that he's different from Jin. Also, didn't Devil have a different slot from Kazuya back in the day? I don't know if I'm remembering correctly. I'll have to look into that. But yeah. Max was doing a costume history of Jin (and decided out of the goodness of his heart to include Devil Jin) and was going on about how his horns were stupid. I think his wings, too! That's when I couldn't watch any more. CAUSE HOW DARE.~

Today's mix:
Past Lessons / Future Theories by Slam 2000 Tech-House / Techno / House / Deep House
Oh, hell yes, folks. Today, we've got an exquisite turn-of-the-millennium double-disc mix, courtesy of Glasgow's greatest techno DJ pair to ever do it, Slam. Back in the early 90s, these guys were part of the group that was responsible for co-founding the terrific Soma Quality Recordings label—also based out of Glasgow—and these days they play sets all across the globe, have their very own festival, and host one of techno's most popular weekly podcasts too: Slam Radio. Needless to say, in a genre whose overall ephemerality tends to be so key, and with so many acts who debuted in the early 90s having naturally fallen by the wayside, the fact that these two have managed to become, and still remain, an institution in this space is such a commendably rare feat in and of itself 👏. And a mix like this serves as a stellar example as to why they've managed to stick around and stay in the top echelon of techno DJs for so long. Past Lessons / Future Theories certainly doesn't catch Slam in their earliest days, but it's still only the second mix of theirs to ever be released commercially, and the first since 1996's Psychotrance 4, on Moonshine Music. And while the first disc is the far chiller of the two and sees them tying to shy away from dropping the straight-up techno jams, it's the second disc where they decide to really channel their true, uninhibited inner selves, and get down to brass tacks 😤.
Now, while most mixes tend to have names that you really shouldn't read too much into, I think there's a meaning behind this one's in particular, and that it's really exemplified by a single track: Josh Wink and Lil' Louis' "How's Your Evening So Far?" Real house heads who know their history are already undoubtedly familiar with the name Lil' Louis, as he's the guy who made one of the biggest ever house tunes of the 1980s, with the warm and chuggingly sensual "French Kiss." But with this track from 2000 here, Philadelphia's Josh Wink manages to revive that classic while simultaneously cozily wrapping it in his own techno knowhow, yielding a total banger that, over 20 years later, still satisfies plentifully 😌. So, if Past Lessons / Future Theories means taking what you've already learned and then building something new and lasting directly on top of it, then Wink really knocked that whole concept out of the damn park with this song here.
And also, while this second disc largely seems to run a slightly dark, yet eclectic contemporary techno gamut of sorts, I still definitely gotta give it up especially for Mad Mike Banks' "String Mix" of The Aztec Mystic's "Jaguar." This is a tune that builds itself in anticipation to a boiling point with its very prominent, sharp, and dramatic orchestral string work, with those strings eventually transitioning into creakily seesawing Hitchcockian stabs when the drumbeat finally comes in at the end. Such a phenomenal track!
So, in all honesty, after listening to this album's first disc, I was starting to get ready to conclude that while Slam had been trusted veteran DJs for a good while by the year 2000, this release itself didn't actually have the transcendent 'wow' factor that you might expect. But evidently, these guys were just saving up all their magic for disc 2. Disc 1 isn't a total skipper by any means, but that second one really shows you what these Glasgow legends are capable of weaving together, and to that end, why they've managed to outlast almost all of their peers as well.
Listen to CD1 here. Listen to CD2 here.
Highlights:
CD1:
E-Dancer - "Heavenly (Juan Atkins Remix)" Flunky - "Love Song (Dub)" Sueño Latino - Sueno Latino (Bushwacka! Tek Mix)" Mark Flash - "Timbales Calientes" Silicone Soul - "Right On, Right On"
CD2:
Bushwacka! - "Healer (House Mix)" Hipp-E & Eric Davenport - "Jesus Loves 2000" Valentino Kanzyani - "Fever" Trevor Rockcliffe - "A Sound Called House" Samuel L. Session - "Tribe Cut" Death In Vegas - "Dirge (Slam Mix)" Josh Wink & Lil' Louis - "How's Your Evening So Far?" Black Odyssey - "The Stand" Gaetano Parisio - "1999" Slam - "Positive Education" The Aztec Mystic - "Jaguar (Mad Mike String Mix)"

234: Black Star // Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star
Tumblr media
Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star Black Star 1998, Rawkus
Fair warning about the review ahead:
Tumblr media
Remember dial-up modems? I croak as my dentures slide down my throat and prolapse my anus. I grew up in a pretty rural part of Ontario, so when I made a conscious effort to get into rap in the early ‘00s at age 17 or so, I was stuck downloading 72MB .rar folders off music blogs that would take 6 to 10 hours on our rickety 56k modem. We only had one phone line, so I would do the bulk of my downloading overnight, hoping that the connection wouldn’t blip out while I slept and leave me with a useless partially downloaded version of like, King of Rock or Straight Out the Jungle or whatever. Money for CDs was limited by my let’s call it principled abstention from getting a job, but when I could skip enough lunches to get a wad of cash together it went right to the music section at whatever big box store I could get a ride to. The first rock and metal CDs I bought in my early teens were predictably humiliating (e.g. Godsmack, the second Buckcherry record), but I was pretentious enough by the time I had my rap phase that my first picks were actually pretty tight: Public Enemy’s Fear of a Black Planet and Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.
youtube
I had been trying to get a grasp on rap by downloading the canon in chronological order, but because I bought Black Star during this stretch I actually heard it at the same time I was listening to the golden age records it evokes—“Definition” and Boogie Down Productions, “A Children’s Story” and Slick Rick, De La and Tribe and Mos and Talib all in conversation. Nowadays, I tend to be skeptical of artists that pound their chests about being “old school” while aping well-worn trends, but everything comes together so well on Black Star: two emcees just old enough to be the little cousins of the first wave of true rap stars who want their own turn at making music in a style that had already moved on. With the confidence of prodigiously talented young men, they forced that closed door open just wide enough to create what might be the last masterpiece of its branch of the hip-hop family tree.
As of 2023, Mos (now Yasiin Bey) has now released more confusing press releases about his various retirements than great albums, and Talib Kweli is best known for sweatily harassing women who criticize him on Twitter, but Black Star catches each at the height of their abilities, rhyming like visionaries about real shit over tracks that turn the memory of classic beats into myths and ancient mating calls. Was any golden age track closer to the poetic soul than what Mos, Talib, and guest Common do with DJ Hi-Tek’s “Respiration”? Do any feel more true to the spirit of Toni Morrison or Amiri Baraka than the 88-keys-produced “Thieves in the Night”? As young people often do, the Black Star crew looked at a period not more than five to ten years past as though it were time out of mind—but something in the intensity of their nostalgia, the size of the legend they built up in their minds, gave them the space they needed to create a record the equal of their great forebears.
youtube
How it happened, I’m not quite sure: it seemed like there were a hundred emcees in the Rawkus orbit who could absolutely rap their asses off, and some talented producers to boot, but you can count on three fingers the number of truly essential LPs that came out of it (I’ll pause here for somebody to lose their shit over my downplaying Pharoahe Monch’s Internal Affairs). But, for a little while anyway, Mos Def could walk on water with a mic in his hand, and he softened Talib’s energy just enough that the uncontrollable torrent of the man’s flow was briefly channeled into a machine of balance and grace. I could listen to the way they pass it back and forth all my life, and I likely will.

A-T-3 255 Gwen Guthrie - Seventh Heaven
Gwen Guthrie's second album Portrait is released in 1983. It was recorded at Compass Point in Nassau with the same all-stars as her debut, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Wally Badarou, Darryl Thompson, and Steven Stanley. As you'd expect from such a prolific songwriter and backing singer with a great supporting cast It's a terrific album
Larry Levan had remixed It Should Have Been You which was released as a single from her debut album. Levan was given the master tapes for Portrait and to Island Records horror spent too much expensive studio time to their liking remixing it, and this was when record companies had budgets to spend on lesser known artists. I remember watching the Brian Duffy documentary The Man Who Shot the 60s, Duffy produced the now iconic sleeve artwork for David Bowie's album Aladdin Sane, his advice to Bowie was spend as much of the record company's money as you can and then to recoup there investment they have to promote you. Promotion budgets are a big deal, you could have made they greatest album of all time but if nobody knows about it it's going to get buried. It helped that by Aladdin Sane had had his breakthrough and was already being seen as a major star, Gwen Guthrie wasn't that fortunate
Perhaps Larry Levan didn't spend enough of Island's money because his remixes sat on a shelf for two years and other than his remixes for Peanut Butter and Hopscotch the only place you could here Larry Levan's other remixes from these sessions was at the Paradise Garage played off reel-to-reel tapes. Paradise Garage was one of the most famous clubs on the planet and it was Larry Levan that made that happen. Gwen Guthrie became known as 'The First Lady Of The Paradise Garage' because of her live performances there and Levan playing his remixes of her records in his sets.
In 1985 Island release some of Levan's remixes as the mini-album Padlock (Special Mixes). The mini-album is credited to Levan with Gwen Guthrie demoted to featured performer alongside Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Wally Badarou, and Darryl Thompson. We can extract from this decision that it was decided by the record company that Larry Levan was creating demand for these records to be put out and it was Levan' name that would get punters handing over their cash. Padlock sold much better than Portrait once it was released, Peanut Butter was reissued, Padlock was released as a single, as was Seventh Heaven (in the UK this came out around the time of Gwen's biggest success Aint Nothing Going On But The Rent in 1986, with Levan's remixes of Getting Hot and It Should Have Been You off Gwen's self-titled debut)
Going back to the issue of samples like I mentioned the other day Seventh Heaven, the Larry Levan remix, has been sampled in hip hop, rnb, and dance music over and over for tracks by the likes of Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Busta Rhymes, Leaders Of The New School, Redman, Dilated Peoples, El-P, Public Enemy, Amil feat Beyoncé, Eric Sermon, Kenny Dope, Spinna, Tek 9, Dj Krust...

and then there's ppl in the comment sections that are like "it's cool they're bringing this up so that jin can have a proper redemption arc!" sorry sorry (not sorry) you CAN'T have a redemption arc from literal war, being a cold bastard, killing millions. you can't. you can't without dying, and then you're still seen as a piece of shit. it's something you really can't come back from. with strong implications that azazel was gonna be here, with lars' characterization - i was REALLY hoping for that retcon. for SOME retcon. but that first 4 mins? it actually killed most my hope. and yet i'm STILL inhaling that sweet sweet copium in HOPES that it still gets retconned. that maybe jin is just BLAMING himself for it when really, it's not directly his fault - it's dj's or azazel's. right? right??? they're REALLY NOT going with this right???? it just makes NO SENSE!! it makes no sense at all. even if jin's intentions were good all of a sudden - lars makes no sense. because lars was very hateful towards jin in tek7, but understood his worth. that's in character for sb like lars, realizing the man who tormented him is their only hope. but now lars being a CHEERLEADER practically???? wtf????? the only way i can see THAT happening is if lars found out that jin wasn't in control of his actions, and realized that in a way, jin's also a victim.
JUST. i might sound legit upset here and i actually am. LIKE IT'S SILLY I KNOW IT'S SILLY. but i'm upset, yet at the same time - i don't really know why i'm surprised. i should've seen this coming. but i guess i just got my hopes far too up. but like icarus, i fell too close to the sun and now i'm falling down.
y'all know how i feel about the tk6 jin. y'all know how i feel about the story and how i was really hoping that'd be improved upon. i guess it doubles down on me rn bc i already complained about another fighting game and its weird decisions that just ruin things for me. now it seems like tek is doing the same thing and just SIIIIIGH.
it also brought back a hoarde of ppl saying "KAZUYA IS THE BETTER AND MORE SYMPATHETIC ONE. JIN WILL PROBS BE THE BAD GUY IN THE END" AND JUST UGHHHHHHHH.
this blog definitely may stay very canon divergent. just siiiiiiigh.
