Loooooong rant post essay about dmc netflix incoming.

Netflix dmc was not made for dmc fans in the slightest. Netflix dmc was made for fans of max0r’s dmc5 video at the absolute most, and vivziepop fans. The tone, writing, setting, characters, everything about it is all very very off. This just straight up isn’t devil may cry.

I hate the argument of “well it’s a different universe” because at it’s core it’s missing everything that makes devil may cry what it is. The whole point of fanfiction and ESPECIALLY an adaptation is to use your understanding of the source material as the foundation and BUILD OFF OF IT. You don’t have to follow the canon beat for beat, nobody’s saying that, but the foundation should still be there. You should still be able to say “yes these are those characters” when reading/watching/playing even if they try something completely new or outlandish. Otherwise you’re just writing a random story but slapping pre-existing labels onto your ocs. That’s what separates good fics from amateur fics. That’s also why DmC garnered so much hate (on top of outright disrespecting the source material). And given that this is a professional grade adaptation and not a tween’s first attempt at a story, it’s going to be held to the former’s standards. And “different universe” or not, it’s not above critique or comparisons to the original. It’s not a standalone story, it’s an adaptation and will be treated as such. Nobody gave this much leeway to the DmC 2013 reboot despite it being pretty fun to play, so why does Netflix, so notorious for pumping out widely hated adaptations that it’s become a meme, get more leeway? Hell, Lucia is fucking WHITE. That alone should attest to the carelessness of this show. Or does “it’s a different universe” also excuse whitewashing? I get that dmc2 was ass but you can’t just do that???

It’s also disheartening to see people defending the new show with “well dmc’s story is dogshit anyways so it doesn’t matter what they do in this show.” If you don’t like the original story then that’s alright, you’re allowed to have that opinion, but that’s not a defense at all for the show nor is it an actual rebuttal towards fans of the series. (And I will state outright that if you don’t like devil may cry’s story, you’re not a fan of it. At most you’re a fan of hack and slash games and that’s okay to admit.) But people do love devil may cry, and as fans we love it’s story in spite of it’s flaws and cheesiness. You may not care because it’s meaningless to you, but there is a passionate and dedicated fanbase who adores these characters and their arcs and we are allowed to dislike new, disrespectful depictions of said characters especially when the writers don’t have a fundamental understanding of them. If Netflix au “Dante” and “Mary’s” names were changed you honestly couldn’t see any resemblance to Dante and Lady and that is a very big issue with the writing. They’re just one note imitations at best.

The whole show honestly feels like “devil may cry through the lens of someone who’s only vaguely heard of it” and not an honest to god adaptation made by someone who genuinely cares about the franchise. I’m not gonna be like “heh fans could do so much better” (disregarding the fact that there are way better fanfictions out there lol) but Adi just straight up does not care about dmc. If you took away any dmc branding you would still have the exact same show with no differences. That is not a good adaptation. (And I could write a whole post about Lady’s depiction alone, christ).

Another point- as a die-hard dante x lady shipper, even I think the vague romance was dogshit. This alone can prove any point I have about Adi misunderstanding the characters because how does someone take 20 years of built up chemistry and somehow fuck it up?? Like somehow some way he managed to make dante x lady feel forced, lacking, and annoyingly fanservicy. My brother in christ the exam was open note and you still failed.

And I know I’ll get these comments so covering this too: “Fans don’t like ANYTHING different.” Yeah no, that isn’t happening here. Now I have been involved in fandoms long enough to know that there are a lot of annoying purists out there who just don’t like anything, but that isn’t the majority of where the criticism comes from. I sure as hell am not one of those purists and have a lot of opinions that would have them putting my head on a pike lmao. (I value Dmc2 and don’t just ignore it. I love dmc4 and especially Nero. I loved the original dmc anime as a character study for dante. So on and so forth.) I can’t speak for every single critic or fan, but I know I and a lot of other fans are perfectly fine with taking Dante’s character in new directions and opening up new stories with him or the rest of the dmc world. Without new material, the old stuff gets stale and I can accept that. A lot of people went into this show open minded. But you can read my earlier points to see why I (and more) ended up hating this show. I should also add that I watched this with friends. Friends who are not huge fans of dmc like I am, but just casual observers who enjoyed some of the games and characters. They also hated this. So it’s not just die hard fans saying this shit lol.

Also the people crying out “gatekeeping.” No we ENCOURAGE everyone to play these games. We encourage everyone to actually get into the story and we want to share the things we love with others. The “gatekeepy” aspect is “if you only like the show, you’re not a dmc fan” which… yeah? That shouldn’t be a controversial take. If you aren’t a fan of the games then you aren’t a fan of the games. The show is so far completely removed from anything devil may cry that it’s basically a separate fandom. Of course you can enjoy both at the same time, you’re not fake for being a fan of both. I understand that some people are saying this and those people are lame asf lol. It’s perfectly okay to like the show even if a lot of fans don’t. You can be a dmc fan and a dmc netflix fan, but while they can coexist they are still ultimately 2 separate things. If you ONLY like the show and don’t go explore the games then you’re a dmc netflix fan.

With all that said, I encourage you to form your own opinions on the show (pirate it please for the love of god, do not give that fascist a single cent). Understand where other people are coming from but don’t let people’s thoughts dictate your opinions.

i respect the time and effort you've put into this,but unfortunately,i still disagree on regard of the "Anthony" boy being Vergil. And,quite frankly, I find a lot of the points you provide to be quite shallow and don't go beyond personal interpretations when the episode itself provides enough implications that the "Anthony" boy is indeed Dante.

First off,the elephant in the room. It is directly disproven by the "before the nightmare" novel,where it is explicitly stated that Vergil hasn't gone under any aliases unlike Dante. This alone erases all the probability of Vergil being "Anthony".

You might argue that despite it contradicting the current established lore ,the time the episode was prepared was still based around Vergil --"so the point still stands". But,i'd say otherwise. Because as I mentioned earlier the storytelling and the evidence only points to one of the Sparda kins,and it is Dante.

The first obvious clue,is the picture shown in the episode. The Anthony boy is shown wearing red(with a BLACK blouse,NOT "blue"). We all know red is associated with Dante. If the boy really was intended to be Vergil, wouldn't the producers atleast put on his signature color?Seems like an odd creative choice to make if the kid really were Vergil.

The second point,the hidden box. Dante didn't just guess where it was,he knew where it was. Near the end of the episode we it's digged up(and since it can't be Ernest we're left with Dante).why would someone like Dante go as far to do something like that when it holds no sentimental value for him?If Ernest really were just a stranger,this thing should hold no significance for him.Why bother?

"Oh!For his brother!The box signifies Vergil's blue and has the letter "V" on it!" Again,this is nothing more than a mere personal interpretation,and doesn't rise above the actual implications provided by the episode.

Third,"Anothony Redgrave" is obviously a reference to Tony Redgrave...(does this need spelling out?..) DMC's original creator,Hideki Kamiya has stated before that the alias Dante takes is from a journalist named "Anthony Redgrave". (Would like to bind the source here but it's an old tweet and the ask itself is deleted)

Fourth...you argue that Dante does not care for Ernest. Then what's the point of this scene?

The melancholic atmosphere,the expression,the used soundtrack...Why the hell would Dante brood over a stranger's words?The same bothersome stranger that supposedly "mistaked him for another" the entire time?...He could simply shrugg it off as another unpleasant encounter. He's had plenty of those.

But from the way it is shown,he doesn't. He CARES. Because he IS Anthony ,and the guilt he carries is a burden for him to this day.

Everything from start to finish,the framed picture,the box,Ernest's crash out,leads to this. Why convey such an emotional conclusion if the journey had no impact?

"OK ,but then why does Dante keep on denying he's Anthony?"Maybe he's not "known for lying" as you said,but that does not exclude him from the act. Dante's not a reliable narrator with his own identity nor past. He denied his own heritage,put on fake names and lived as another for a really long time. If he tried tricking himself,what makes other people,or even the audience to an extent,an exception?Furthering my point; Dante distances himself from ordinary people as much as he can. In EP2 he says he doesn't like dealing with human folk,and again in the "before the nightmare" novel one of his reasons for not attending Patty's birthday party is that he doesn't see himself fit for an event involving ordinary people. He has lost the people dearest to him because of demon heritage ,and seeing Ernest,somebody directly from his past who could've been a victim of the past tragedy(CAUSED BY HIS DEMON HERITAGE)He'd obviously wanna cut ties the sooner he can.

Putting all of this together,I see no trace of Vergil anywhere in the story. People push this theory because they take Dante's words for granted,but if you were to analyze it just a little more,the pieces add do up.

Devil May Cry: The Animated Series (2007) - Dissecting Episode 8 "Once Upon a Time"

A.k.a. spending many words addressing what I feel is a much dismissed episode of the 2007 anime.

Ep 8 "Once Upon A Time" is a Vergil backstory episode. From what I've seen over the years, this apparently flies over the heads of even people familiar with all other works in Devil May Cry canon. But I think that this episode deserves re-evaluation, because it is really very consistent with how Vergil is portrayed both in DMC 3 and in his more recent re-appearance in DMC 5.

The premise of the episode is that a man named Earnest heard that his old friend Anthony had resurfaced running a business called Devil May Cry. He had fallen out of contact with Anthony 20 years ago following a fire that burned to the ground the port town called Morris Island where they lived - killing the majority of the population. The fire was claimed by survivors to be caused by a demon attack on the island. Dante denies meeting Earnest before. He goes along with Earnest to visit the town anyways because he wants to know who is putting Earnest up to this.

Consulting the various pieces of evidence.

1) Dante is not usually known for lying (except for withholding information), and yet he says repeatedly "I'm not the Anthony you are looking for". That's a pretty odd way to phrase his denial, but it makes sense when you realize why the show can't just outright say "that wasn't me, but it might have been my identical twin brother". A conceit of the show is that it never once acknowledges in words that Dante had a twin brother. The show is allergic to saying the name "Vergil" (not even once!), which made it surreal to watch as an introduction to the series in 2007 and to later learn "oh, he has a twin brother!....OH NO he has a dead twin brother!" Because of the way that in retrospect it's obvious that Vergil haunts the narrative in at least half of the episodes.

This is almost the exact same way that Vergil is handled in DMC 4, where he's very plot relevant despite his name never being spoken. The Yamato belonged to "Dante's brother" - that's the extent to which anyone acknowledges him in words. Because the writers have decided to address the question of "how do you make the viewers aware of the past escapades of the characters without wasting screen-time on exposition dumps" with the answer of: "Don't! :)"

Real people don't start off every new relationship by explaining their tragic backstory - so when characters like Patty and Nero are introduced they are surrogates for the fraction of the audience who did not play the previous games or read the books and are reacting to the mysterious figure of Dante from an outsider perspective.

2) This point is one of the weakest (because it only works in hindsight), but it should be said that as of DMC 5 and Visions of V it is known that the demon attack on Morris Island is entirely separate and unrelated to the demon attack on the Sparda mansion near Redgrave City. It is also heavily implied that Dante was constantly up in Vergil's business - making it unlikely that Vergil could keep a secret friend from Dante and also have that friend never find out about his twin brother.

Plus there is the timeline to consider. DMC 1 takes place 20 years after the attack on the Sparda mansion. Morris Island takes place 20 years before this episode of the anime. There is a gap of at least a few years between DMC 1 and the anime considering that there was enough time for Trish to partner with Dante, change the shop name, and then for Trish to leave and the shop name to change back. So even the timelines don't match up if these 20-year time spans are strictly correct rather than vague approximations of time.

3) Dante has a completely separate backstory about where he ended up after his family home burned down in a fire and he was separated from Vergil. Because of the shock and to protect himself he buried his real identity in amnesia for like 8-10 years and created an identity as Tony Redgrave. He became a regular human mercenary and unaware of demons until suddenly he was pulled back into it and forced to remember. This is covered in the DMC 1 novel. The DMC 1 novel has been more decisively folded into canon as of references to its events in DMC 5: Before the Nightmare. In contrast, Vergil's whereabouts during the same time period were a mystery. What would have been the point of giving Dante a new personal history set in a small port town when you can instead take the opportunity to fill in the blanks on the person whose past is unknown?

Basically, the writers take it for granted that there is a tacit understanding with the fans that they will be faithful in writing Dante's character to the extent that is possible. Thinking that the viewers understand that the 2007 anime is not an adaptation of any previous works and has no desire to re-tread those previous works. The version of Dante as he appears in DMC 3 and subsequently in the anime is written as the character he would be if he experienced the events laid out in the DMC 1 prequel novel. Anything that they've retconned is exclusively related to Vergil - Vergil was not abducted by Mundus as a child and Vergil did not experience the events of the DMC 1 novel (and is unaware of Gilver in general). So if those things did not happen - then what replaced them? The way that anime Ep 8 and DMC 4 are written imply that the writers already had ideas about the answers (it's only 3 years between DMC 3 in 2005 and DMC 4 in 2008), but outside of more prequels there is no graceful way to deliver information about a character who is canonically dead - everything about their thoughts and intentions is filtered through 2nd and 3rd hand unreliable sources.

Even so, Visions of V re-creates the singular kid Vergil scene that was shown in the DMC 3 manga. In that case the scene takes the form of a surreal nightmare that is forced on him by the demons that he is conversing with in the present. It's surreal in the sense of the symbolism of being naked and afraid and stabbed to a gravestone with your own name on it.

Whereas the Visions of V version positions itself as a more straightforwards narrative account of the event. Vergil chooses to acknowledge what he was really thinking and feeling that day as a step towards working past it:

4) Earnest and "Anthony" had a favourite teacher - Margaret - so they seem to have both had a scholarly inclination. The unique cutscene introducing the Vergil playable route in DMC 3:SE (and at multiple points in the DMC 3 manga) shows him browsing books in a library.

The plot of the episode is that Earnest has an ill-begotten plan to open a portal to Hell and summon a demon. Dante tries to talk him out of it and is unsuccessful. This is a smaller scale version of what Vergil did in DMC 3. The parallels - they are here.

5) The kid in the photo that Dante sees at Earnest's house is wearing a blue/black jacket and red shirt. Blue with red interior lining being the colours associated with Vergil at the time of DMC 3, but even more directly with Nero in DMC 4. Morris Island is a port town. Fortuna is a port town on an island. This anime was being written and produced during the same timeframe as DMC 4.

6) Earnest and "Anthony" buried a box of treasures as children and it was a secret between the two of them. The box that Dante digs up has a scratched out name on a field of blue. The first letter of the name is a cursive "V". How did Dante know where the box was? Dante and Vergil were twins and were still similar enough at age 10 or so that Dante could guess where Vergil would have hidden something. They were similar enough that they both chose the same name of Anthony/Tony when they tried to obscure their identity. The identity confusion is a feature, not a bug - it's part of the tragic irony. It's toying with the same question as DMC 5: if their positions were switched, would their fates be different?

Dante does not care about Earnest. At all. At least, beyond the point that he's a person about to do something foolish that could get himself and a lot of other people killed. Dante is doing the bare minimum to humor this man - so if not because of some gesture related to their "friendship", why even dig up the box? For the same reason that he went to visit the town: curiosity. He was looking for proof of Vergil's existence in the world before that one time he showed up when they were 18 talking about a lunatic plan to raise a demon tower and open the connection between human and demon worlds (DMC 3 manga), and then at age 19 actually went through with that plan while revealing that the point of it all was to gain more power (DMC 3), followed shortly by throwing himself into Hell while severely injured at the end of DMC 3. What would motivate a person to do these things?

7) This port town being burned down in a fire caused by a demon attack explains a lot about the psychology of Vergil, in ways that would not be explicitly confirmed until DMC 5 and Visions of V. He's motivated by his fear. He did not hide from Mundus as successfully as Dante, and even when he tried to reinvent himself as a different person the demons caught up with him. Dante lived through one tragic fire and loss of home and safety and he knows how devastating it is - but he repressed the memory and moved on from it in his own uniquely dysfunctional way. Vergil experienced at least this 2nd attack, which begs the question of how many more times did it happen that Dante is unaware of? How badly would it damage a person to live in fear of being constantly hunted and unable to stay in any place for very long or form lasting attachments to other people? Dante can relate to this a bit given his own personal tragedies, although unlike Vergil he has a handful of people like Lady and Trish to keep him grounded though the years.

But for Vergil it can be extrapolated that he was forced to be alone after any attempt to get close to normal people ended in further tragedy, and it seems like the demons won't stop hunting him until either he is dead or the mastermind sending the demons to hunt him is dead. This evolves into an obsession with power, detachment from human social connection, and willingness to make the decision that a city worth of humans is acceptable collateral damage so long as it gets him that power and opportunity to end Mundus.

If there is a single detail that calls in to doubt that Ep 8 is about actual Vergil post-separation from Dante, it is that "Anthony and his mother" lived in the village. On the other hand, the inclusion of this detail seems as much designed to baffle Dante as it does the viewer. This could be a hook for Dante that has him doubting Earnest's story and/or his own memory because he was certain that their mother died at the same time that Dante and Vergil were separated. However, although there are photographic records of "Anthony" in the town there don't seem to be any of this "mother", and her name is never given.

So if indeed "Anthony" was Vergil, then this mother figure is a continuing mystery. The possibility is that Vergil was accompanied by a woman who was a mentor to him in some way, similar to Dante with Nell Goldstein. Could have been a magical mentor - how did he learn to fling about spectral swords anyways? Impossible to say for certain (i.e. more flexible for future use as a plot point), but if Patty and Morrison from the anime are canon then this suggests that other things set up in the 2007 anime could get a callback if ever there was a DMC6.

As for the purpose of this episode in the context of the anime - it would have been deliberately designed as an attack on Dante by Sid - the mischief maker of the series who is advancing a background demon resurrection plot. One of the times that Dante confronts him Sid says "In the end you were drawn here by the smell of a devil weren't you?" before backflipping off the balcony as the scene lights up with blue lightning.

What is it that Vergil says in the Mission 13 fight in DMC 3 the first time he uses his devil trigger: "You will not forget this devil's power".

This whole episode is a twist of the knife to deliver a reminder that Dante and Vergil weren't so different once, that kid Vergil probably missed their mother as much or more than Dante because he didn't have the luxury of willing himself into amnesia, and that while Dante managed to make it to adulthood before demons found their way back into his life Vergil was not so lucky. Understanding some of the reasons that drove Vergil to obsessively seeking power only makes it worse that Dante was now twice responsible for unknowingly playing into Mundus plans by severely injuring Vergil in a fight to the death in DMC 3, and then by killing him instead of saving him in DMC 1.

Bonus: Even the alcohol gets in on the theme. Dante in his own home office enjoys a "Budweiner" beer with his buddy Morrison as he gets the details about Morris Island. The end credits show him with a glass of "Back Janiels" liquor - these are his usual tastes. When he visits Earnest's house it is just after seeing that photograph of (presumably) kid Vergil that he is offered a glass of red wine.

This is some classic gothic imagery where red wine evokes the look of blood. The last time that Dante and Vergil fought (intentionally - not counting when Vergil was under the control of Mundus) it was over what it means that they have the blood of Sparda. And blood is present in the lyrics of the lesser demon battle music that plays through Missions 2-13 right up to the scene where Vergil is trying to open the gate.

... Taste the blood, Taste your fate, Swallow your pride, With your hate, ... Knee's in the blood with your crying pleas, Wade in your sorrow, bathe in your fear, Clear the mind of the righteousness suffered, Witness the moment of your failure's prosper!

the people who think vergil is some emotionless chad who exists purely to ‘aura farm’ or whatever the fuck actually piss me off i cannot STAND that side of the dmc fandom.

another rant nobody but me cares about but lorddd i gotta type this out somewhere. also wanna preface this by saying it’s about pgr vergil, but also just vergil in general, and directed at the people i mentioned above.

firstly — no it’s not ‘out of character’ for vergil to show vulnerability or emotion, he is a deeply emotional person. he feels deeply, he sees the world deeply, and he hurts so deeply that his motivation centred around being able to prevent himself from being harmed any more. he just isn’t (wasn’t) good at expressing that without violence pre-dmc5.

punishing grey raven did a really great job of capturing his post-dmc5 maturity, and it’s cohesive with the additional information we got in Visions of V regarding vergil’s inner thoughts. we simple haven’t seen enough of vergil outside of battle to be able to fully grasp how he’d act when he is free of chasing an ultimate goal, and is in a domestic, (mostly) relaxed situation.

it’s the people who’ve played approximately 5 hours total of ONLY dmc5, who then see clips of vergil in pgr that act all disgusted and get offended that vergil is actually capable of emotion and/or affection, who are the problem. they’re why vergil has been memed so much that people genuinely, honest to god(s) believe that he hates dante, he hates nero, and never cared at all. he gave nero his HEART, his book that he sees as an integral part of himself. the symbolism of him stating he wanted to be loved and protected, and then giving his ‘heart’ to be safeguarded by nero is so poetic (pun intended)!!! he literally trusts his son — after being with him while he was V, and fighting him as vergil at the qliphoth — to protect him.

vergil is capable of trusting, he is capable of affection, and he wants to be able to. it is in fact NOT out of character for him to express that (even if he sucks at doing so and is generally horrifically awkward about it. love the guy).

now don’t get me wrong — vergil is not a good person, and i’m not implying he is. he isn’t benevolent or kind or selfless, and he struggles (falls flat) at being empathetic to people he sees as more fortunate than him (such as dante, who he resented for being ‘better off’), but that doesn’t mean he’s incapable of experiencing varying degrees of love. for god’s sake, bury the light literally describes him as having ‘secret love, bloodline yearns.’ vergil is the pinnacle, the definition of emotionally constipated.

he was a total shithead and a real prick in dmc3. he was also a total shithead and a real prick in dmc5 (i mean that affectionately. but don’t get me started on urizen LOL) but he is as childish as dante is. he banters and holds silly grudges and competes with his brother like a teenager with something to prove. he calls dante an idiot for still saying ‘jackpot’ and then turns around and says it himself, because he secretly loves to.

and holy fuck that was a LOT longer than i intended this rant to be and i should be studying for my EngLang exam but oh well!!! shoutout to whoever reads this entire block of drivel.

❥ cloud is the type of person who will swear up and down that he doesn’t get jealous, but truth be told, he does. however, he doesn’t recognize it as jealousy at first.

❥ although, he definitely tries to shove his feelings down once he realizes that he’s somewhat upset. cloud won’t upright and confess that he’s jealous or go up to you when he sees someone flirting with you.

❥ cloud’s pretty understanding if you needed space or if you were just talking with someone else, he’s not gonna immediately resort to his insecurity.

❥ but once it’s a reoccurring experience, or if they know what they’re doing— or worse, if they’re actively flirting with you or touching you, then he’ll definitely start to get a little jealous.

❥ if you even insinuate that he got jealous though, he’ll deny it to the moon and back and say that it never happened. he may act like he doesn’t care, but don’t let it fool you. cloud cares about you way too much to let you be slobbered over at a bar by a disrespectful dude.

❥ i feel like zack’s semi into pda? as long as he’s not around the firsts or anybody important, especially angeal, then he just can’t wait to show you off. he can’t help it, poor boy loves you too much 😭 so because of the somewhat pda, i dont see a lot of people trying to flirt with you— especially knowing that your boyfriends a SOLDIER.

❥ i dont think he’d even notice at first, too busy talking to you to even notice that theres someone who has your attention also. i cant see anybody really trying to flirt with you though, zack’s like that one small dog who keeps yapping at your feet when you get to close to its owner.

❥ zack is very vocal!! if the person interrupts your conversation, he will blatantly call them out on it. he’d narrow his eyes at them and just say, “hello, i was talking to them??” because who interrupts people like that?? plain rude!!

❥ saw this in another post and i totally agree with it, zack’ll joke and joke with underlying messages behind these said ‘jokes’ and definitely has the mindset of, “what can they offer when you have me???” he just doesn’t see how they catch your attention or why they’re talking to you while hes sitting right there??

❥ will bend over backwards just for your attention, he will pout otherwise if he doesn’t get your full undivided attention after his attempts.

❥ will probably annoy the person after you’re gone by either passive-aggressively interrogating them or ranting about how in love he is with you. he’s like the cartoons where they hold their chin in their palm with heart eyes as they look up all dreamy with a giant thought bubble that’s just you. he can’t help it, he just loves you too much (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞!!1!1!

❥ for pre nibelheim (because i miss soft and not crazy sephiroth), i cant see him getting all that much jealous? i guess he’d get more so protective if he sees someone all up on you— but otherwise, he’s pretty laid back about it. he puts a lot of his faith in you entrusting that you won’t break it, so i cant see him going crazy over it.

❥ i think sephiroth’s mature enough to not cause a scene even if he was jealous, though. he wouldn’t be petty or actively try to keep you away from anybody pre nibelheim, although he finds it amusing how they try to flirt with you.

❥ he especially has to have trust in you considering he’s a first class!! unless you are also a SOLDIER or you’re associated with shinra, you guys will spend semi-large gaps of times apart. he doesn’t think you’d betray him like that though, he’s mature enough to have a conversation if he’s really worried.

❥ sephiroth has his moments of insecurity, but usually when he’s off duty— he’ll be with you. i’m just imagining sitting at a bar with sephiroth as he’s literally right beside you while this persons trying to slide up next to you lol. i also don’t think sephiroth gets jealous because he knows his worth and know he can be intimidating when he wants to be!! even just his teasing makes people quiver in their fuckin boots lmao. i doubt anybody would wanna mess with a first class SOLDIER who’s fit and over 5’11” / 180cm.

❥ after they either get intimidated or realize their advances aren’t working and that you’re happily in a relationship with sephiroth and leave, he’ll chuckle to himself as he thinks aloud about how silly it was to even attempt to get with you, knowing who you’re with. on the off chance that he’s feeling a little possessive or something, he’s not one for pda but he might just give you a kiss after they leave and a quick murmur of amusement due to their foolishness.

❥ now!! post-nibelheim!! you’re not even gonna be out of his sight enough to be hit on considering he’s kinda like.. a war criminal in a sense 😭. he’s much more possessive in his little silly criminally existentially crisis insane arc, never letting you leave alone or even go out in public that often. he’s much more obsessed with you after his break, so if he finds someone even making advances on you?? ooh, boy.

❥ i’d like to think reno’s into pda as long as he’s not at work, poor rude having to witness wet kisses on your cheek with a lazy arm slung across your shoulder ever day. so i can’t really imagine anybody trying a bunch of stuff with you when usually— reno’s not too far behind.

❥ if reno happens to be not right next to you and he’s just doing his own thing and he happens to GLANCE AT YOU? AND HE SEES SOMEONE HITTING ON YOU?? instant slide next to you.

❥ he’s petty enough to start calling you all these pet names while he’s sitting next to you, wrapping his arm around you while he’s sizing the flirt up. he’ll look them up and down with a hard stare and maybe throw some passive aggressive comments every once in a while.

❥ he’ll probably make them uncomfortable (unless they wanna square up, because knowing reno, he might just charge if the person reciprocates his belligerent comments) so by the time they already leave, reno’s already whining against you as he asks what that was all about, acting all clueless afterwards. but you can tell just from the tone that laces his voice that he knows what he’s doing lol.

❥ he’s just a petty guy, maybe not so much possessive because i mean you can go out wherever you want wearing whatever you want (maybe after a small quickie at home if it’s something revealing), he can fend for you. he swears he’s your knight in shining armor no matter how much he teases you lmfao

❥ he won’t think anything of it when someone you know sits with you, you guys usually know each others relatives and friends well enough to trust them. but he’s a little iffy when a random stranger starts chatting you up.

❥ angeal obviously trusts you!! again, unless you’re a SOLDIER (which he wouldn’t prefer only because he worries about your well being), then you guys will have to spend some time apart. he has a lot of faith in you and will always write you when he’s away, letting you know he’s always thinking of you while you’re apart.

❥ if anything, he’ll save you if he notices you’re uncomfortable or something along those lines. he’ll swiftly say he needs your for something and apologizes to the person out of courtesy that he interrupted your guys’ conversation, but oh it’s so urgent, we must retreat!! and i must hold you hand in hand while we run off and do totally boring SOLDIER duties!!

❥ omfg then he pulls you aside and asks if you’re okay and ugh i just want him so bad. like sephiroth, he’ll also explain how foolish it was to even hit on you when you’re clearly happily in a relationship with him. you two’ll walk along back to hq (?) or whatever while you talk about how odd the encounter was.

❥ so in conclusion !! angeal is a gentleman and doesn’t get jealous / protective unless he thinks you’re in trouble or you’re clearly uncomfortable. angeal hewley to the rescue!!!

❥ genesis is so petty that he’ll probably consider the possibility that you’re flirting back? and then proceed to ignore you or leaving you off with some esoteric poetry while he tends to his duties. he is first class, after all.

❥ if he’s sitting right next to you though, and he hears that you’re not flirting with them. he’s petty enough like reno where he’ll suddenly be throwing out all these dramatic pet names and throw longing glances towards you, except he won’t even spare a glance towards the other person— simply only paying attention to you.

❥ id consider genesis a jealous person, but i do think that most of it strikes a protective instinct within him. he does understand that he’s also a first class SOLDIER meaning he’ll have to trust you, but he has way too much time on his hands to think. also like angeal where he’ll write you as much as he can— except he’ll send you mindless poems he writes or favored quotes of LOVELESS.

❥ in the case that you leave to go to the bathroom or any sort of occasion, genesis would probably scare the other person or make them feel uncomfortable as well. but when you return and they’re gone, he’ll act so clueless. all, “whatever do you mean, dearest?”

❥ another instance where i don’t think anybody would try anything with you. like angeal and sephiroth, genesis is a first class SOLDIER. everybody knows these dudes are the real shit (well, mainly only sephiroths talked about, but it applies to genesis and angeal too!!) so hes all smug parading you around as he side eyes every person who gawks at you. of course he knows you’re beautiful, but your beauty is too much for these fools to comprehend. so yes, he must glare at every single of them.

❥ and yes, also like his companions, he will jeer and whine about how silly it was to try that with you when you two are alone. i can even see genesis pulling a cloud and just whisking you away claiming you need to do something and then act like nothing happened afterwards. either that, or he’ll overdo it and claim to be your angel— no in between.

I almost never post, but I just wanted to say (definitely ranting);

the dmc anime was an absolute blast. people who are complaining about it, we knew it wasn't cannon going into it. sure, lady was a little scuffed, and so was the ending, but the entire thing was a great time.

ive consumed every piece of media this series ever put out. books, manga, games (even the reboot), the original anime, and now this one. I know all the one-off characters, who made dante's guns, who gilver and beryl are. all the fun little facts from 'obscure' titles. I can say without a doubt that I am a true fan of the series. still to this day, I use my dmc4 messenger bag from 2010, and always in some way talking about this series. this series was something I held dearly through dark times of my life. dealing with sa, family death, depression, and near homelessness. so, for those who want to say, I just don't get how much these characters mean to people. yes, i do.

this was a fun watch, and im sorry some people just don't know how to have fun and enjoy your fandom getting some love. everyone is entitled to their opinion, and im sorry some of you feel your fandom was 'attacked' or 'disgraced' or whatever. this is not the worst thing that's happened to us. this was entertaining. it was great seeing some faces we really haven't seen in a while or seen before in games. the tie-ins were great, the easter eggs fun. we stopped mid episode to reminisce on enemies we've gone against and watch old cutscenes on youtube.

my point is, I had fun. I loved it, and while it's not without flaws, my love for the series allowed me to accept them and just enjoy it. seeing my boy up on screen again after all this time was great, the other major capcom franchise mentioned (no spoilers) had me banging on my desk cheering for the tie-in. the music is flawless, but the cgi was rough at times, totally! i 100% look forward to season 2.

i sincerely hope those who didn't like the series on first pass can stop looking at it like a personal attack and give it a second chance with a little more humor.

DMC Netflix rant

K so this isn’t really my usual thing but as someone who recently got into devil may cry and was really looking forwards to the Netflix show I thought I’d air my thoughts on it because I have some opinions. I just wanna say I’m not a longtime fan but a newer one who started playing the games, I started with 5 and finished it and then started getting more into the games from there.

Just wanted to say before it all though this is my opinion and if you disagree that’s completely valid. If you had fun with the show I’m genuinely happy for you! Don’t let my opinion ruin it for you especially if you had a good time!. I don’t want to take something people found legitimate joy in and sully it. If you enjoyed it please move on from this post and enjoy the show. It’s just I have some gripes with it that I want to air out because I have some legitimate issues with it.

With that said spoilers for the show ahead and please do not harass the creators or other people over enjoying this show.

My likes

Animation

I loved the animation. I’d say for the most part it’s smooth and expressive when it needs to. There was some clear love and effort put into this and it shows. After watching the original DMC anime from 2007 and enjoying that but wishing it had a bigger budget, this is what I wanted aesthetic wise at least.

Dante

Personally I love Dante in this! He’s fun and goofy and reminds me of his dmc3 portrayal with him being more younger, cocky and inexperienced. It took a minute to get used to Nero’s voice with him but honestly I think it fits pretty well, like uncle like nephew lol. But genuinely though, Dante was fun and I loved him whenever he was on screen and kept me from dropping the show besides me hate watching it to the end. His ddr section and “who are we shooting at?” Sealed the deal for me.

Enzo

I 100% didn’t expect to love Enzo like I did but i was pleasantly surprised! I haven’t read the dmc novel where he showed up in but I have played bayonetta so I knew him mostly from there. His dynamic with Dante was really interesting, especially since Enzo seemed to genuinely care for Dante in his own way and Dante also cared for him too. He was plain fun and I was actually upset with his death and the callback to how he said he’d take a knife for Dante.

The references

Admittedly I’m a sucker for references but I really found it fun seeing Lucia. The references I didn’t expect but loved even more though were the capcom references! The raccoon city mention, the megaman statue, street fighter arcade machine etc. I wasn’t really expecting references to other capcom materials but I was super happy they got thrown in.

The white rabbit

A genuinely great villain! I was really intrigued he got picked as the main bad guy after seeing he was a throw off baddie from the dmc3 manga. Through the show he was an interesting and captivating through and through. At some points I even rooted for him. I have one grip with him but besides that he was a solid character for me.

The soundtrack

Solid soundtrack, I’m a bit nostalgic for 2000’s and 90’s music like green day, limp bizkit, etc because of my dad playing it when I was younger lol. Solid, and I enjoyed most of the song picks for it.

My dislikes

The cg

Oh god why did they do this???? The animation was great why did they go this route? Listen I get them having a budget and a deadline but it just doesn’t look good. It feels so jarring especially when you have the pretty 2d character beside the ugly cg demon, it also makes fights kinda nauseating to me at least.

Not knowing until now if it was canon or non-canon

This might just be me thing but I’m not sure if anywhere they explicitly said if this was going to be non-canon. This isn’t a big deal but it would’ve been nice to be told beforehand especially since for a month I lowkey thought that this was a canon entry before jumping into the show and realizing it wasn’t, being ok with that and it being a new portrayal and then seeing the rest of the show lol.

The Sparda was wrong thing

Ok so I don’t really get why their doing this especially when their making it seem like his decision was monstrous? Because if Sparda didn’t do that then humanity was gonna be screwed. And like I get what they’re trying to say but making it seem like a selfish decision feels like a big fuck you to sparda’s entire character. He went against mundis and everything he was taught up to that point to do the right thing even at his own expense. He loved humanity and was willing to sacrifice his standing and everything he had to potentially gain with staying at mundis’s side to ensure its survival. Something he’d continue to do when he went to form fortuna and help the protectors. That’s not even mentioning him meeting Eva and having Dante and Vergil, shedding his demonic form to be a father and husband. Though it’s not known in canon as to how exactly he died or when he seemingly disappeared it’s safe to say that with everything known about him he disappeared to save humanity and probably died in the end. So to say his decision is ultimately selfish and that Dante needs to fix the mistakes of his dad is really just…what?? And like I know it’s the rabbit saying this so it’s biased but still. Suddenly framing Sparda as wrong and selfish just feels really weird and kinda shitty.

Dante not knowing he’s part demon

I feel like this takes away from Dante’s character quite a bit. I’d say that a theme through the entire series is Dante’s struggle with his humanity and his in-humanity. I mean the entire song of “devils never cry” that’s in the end credits is about this. It’s also the reason why at least to me in the games seems to try and push people away . So it just feels weird? I think they were trying to explode that revelation in the show but it didn’t really feel like it. And like come on, you’re saying he seriously didn’t know when he was shot point blank in the chest with a shot gun and has superhuman senses and speed? Dante isn’t dumb, and it’s kinda insulting to his characters that they’re trying to make it seem like he genuinely is dumb if he hadn’t clocked that in.

The side characters

Besides Enzo, Dante and the rabbit mom of the other characters besides lady (I’ll get to her later) and maybe the vice president had any impact or interest from me. The minute I saw lady’s crew I immediately knew they were gonna die and I did not care for any of them to remotely feel anything. The only side characters I felt bad for were the demon refugees killed in the apartment complex and flashback scene

How they butchered lady

Quite honestly I don’t give a shit how people are upset lady was able to beat Dante, I couldn’t care less about that when her character was in my opinion butchered to meat clinging to a carcass. She’s so genuinely unlikable it makes me upset because I love dmc3 lady so much. Through the show I couldn’t give a shit about her when she was such an ass in such unredeemable circumstances. Like the fact she was lowkey being racist to Dante. And in some ways I get it, new version of her, and in dmc3 she was antagonistic to Dante there as well. But I think there’s a big difference there and it’s timing and action. In dmc3 she just lost her mom and wants revenge on her dad that nothing else matters, Dante is in her way and a nuisance in that goal that she lashes out until they have their genuine moments. Yes, she hates demons but her mother just died and now this guy who is clearly not human is in her way of killing her father. In the show though her dad turning into a demon and killing her mom happened years ago, and yes that hate hardened as years went on but I’d say her dmc3 portrayal makes her more sympathetic, she’s grieving and she’s a teenager. That brings me back to the show though and her decisions, specifically the fact that she killed a shit Tom of refugees (admittedly the situation was shit but how am I supposed to like her after that) and after learning that demons can be good along with how the government doesn’t value her or their people she decides to stab Dante in the back and hand him in to become a super solider. Honestly it feels like such a disservice to her character especially with her and Dante’s ending conversation of dmc3 of “devils don’t cry” once again cementing Dante’s inner struggle with being part demon and her responding (after disliking him most of the game up until now) saying “ I see. Maybe somewhere out there even a devil may cry when he loses a loved one. Don't you think?” Basically showing how she acknowledges his humanity. They’re probably leading up to a lady redemption arc but honestly I don’t care. They’ve made her almost unredeemable to me and it’s gonna take a lot of heavy lifting for her to ever be likeable in my eyes….and this isn’t even mentioning her constant swearing like the show is trying to remind you it’s a mature show-

The rushed pacing

Yet another thing that I can understand but I can’t help but feel as if nothing and then everything happened all at once. Like all the plot went from was catching Dante - plane scene - apartment complex - flashback episode - finale.

The villain was just some guy

Ok this is a smaller point but like, what do you mean the white rabbit was just some dude. I don’t think we even learned his name which I guess doesn’t matter but still. Couldn’t have had some more build up? Or maybe just made him full demon? If the rabbit head is a mask why is it so expressive?? I guess the blood transfusion stuff explains his abilities but making him full demon could’ve just been the easier option.

Plot holes that could have been fixed

Normally I wouldn’t really care for plot holes but there were some that felt really apparent to me. Like the government and that scientist just learned about demon’s existing but suddenly their already understanding demon magic and figuring out how the Sparda sword works? They could’ve just made it so that they’ve been aware of demons but kept it as a secret to not cause widespread panic. That would’ve made them suddenly understanding demons and the demon world a lot more reasonable. Idk it just feels like such an easy fix that would’ve made the world building a lot more realistic especially considering darkcore or whatever it’s called being a pre-existing entity up till this point. Another thing, I guess this wouldn’t be a plot hole but when is this set??? It has 90/00’s music along with I think a few background characters using old flip/brick phones but they have futuristic weaponry. It’s just a bit jarring in my opinion I guess.

Vergil

Admittedly I’m not the biggest Vergil fan but wtf. You make him a WILLING servant of Mundus??? And that was hill nelo Angelo form?? Huh????? You’re telling me the guy with such astronomically bad mommy issues joins the guy who murdered his beloved mom in cold blood joins him????. This undoes so much of his character, not even to mention it seems like they’re doing the whole jealous twin thing in that flashback sequence which misinterprets a lot of his feelings. He wasn’t upset because she gave Dante an amulet before him be was upset because he thought she chose Dante over him and left him to fucking die. Visions of v pretty much explains everything with “I also wanted to be protected”. That’s not even mentioning how being nelo Angelo mentally fucked with him for years, giving him permanent trauma he purged from himself and woudl lead up to dmc5 and how desperate he is for power. Him being Nelo Angelo unwillingly I’d say is a big plot point for him and making him willing undoes a lot. Just boiling him down to “jealous mom liked Dante more” and willing working with mundus undoes so much of his character. Maybe they’ll explain it, but until then he’s on my dislike list for how they portrayed him so far.

Politics

Firstly as a disclaimer I’m not American, I’m Canadian so maybe take this with a small pinch of salt especially with international relations right now. But uh, I find it a bit weird how the creator Adi Shankar was at the trump inauguration and made the vice president villain look like Biden? And then make a whole thing about government bad, we need to save refugees and bombing hell to colonize for resources when considering what said president he was partying with is doing now??? Idk, I’m not educated enough in American politics to understand everything but personally I find it kinda hypocritical he’s making this commentary while he’s in a certain someone’s pocket.

Overall I’m just disappointed. I’m not really sure what else to say. I was really looking forward to the anime and I’m really let down. I guess that’s my fault for putting faith into something but it just kinda sucks to have your hopes dashed especially after good adaptations like castlevania. So the DMC anime dropped their official trailer yesterday

And I'm gonna be super honest, I'm not looking forward to it.

This post is just gonna be me ranting about my immense disappointment.

So if no one cares about me going off about the anime, feel free to scroll past this, the full rant will be below the cut, but holy hell.

As a longtime DMC fan who's followed the series from the very first game, I'm quite disappointed.

The first things that initially put me off when I saw the teaser.

1. Dante's appearance

When they revealed how he looked, I was mortified.

First of all his hair style looks like an even shittier version of Dante's hair in Devil May Cry 2, which already doesn't make sense because the anime has the White Rabbit in here, and the White Rabbit is from volume 1 of the Devil May Cry 3 Manga. And Dante in the anime looks nothing like Dante's DMC3 look, sure the jacket is close, but that's literally the only thing. Also his eyes, he has small irises which imo doesn't not work with this art style.

Dante's eyes also has wrinkles or crows feet, which literally makes no sense. Because Dante is supposed to be young in here, instead they got him looking like nothing but a generic anime thug than a protagonist.

You can see the difference so easily

its like night and day. This is how he SHOULD look, instead we got generic anime thug Dante. They changed him so much, I'm noticing many distinct facial features gone in this shit excuse of a DMC anime. If you notice in the fan art, Dante looks like he was ripped from the DMC 3 Manga. Dante and Vergil had slightly thicker upper lips, and they kept that and many of their other features the same all throughout the series, until now, with the stupid design they went with for Dante.

I also don't like Vergil's appearance, he's not as bad as Dante, but still uhhh NOT great. Look at what they did to my devil man X_X

I really hate what they did to Vergil, he has silver bangs on his forehead, but in the anime they only gave him one and it looks so out of place.

And THE JACKET! They ruined his cool classic jacket, why the hell are the patterns coming down yellow? Only the LINING should be yellow and his patters are supposed to be white. UGH The one time they include Vergil in an anime adaptation and they do THIS to him?

I'm sorry, actually no. I'm NOT sorry, but I can't forgive them for this.

I respect my devil man too much to accept this version of him.

2. The Casting choice:

Now first things first, I got nothing against JYB

I love the VA, he's super talented, but he should NOT be Dante

Any longtime fan of the video game series will always hear Nero, because thats who JYB is in DMC, nothing against Johnny, but his Dante just doesn't work. It's stupid how they didn't get Reuben Langdon, the guy may have controversial views and opinions, but Reuben is still a super talented actor, his personal views should have never affected his craft. So Reuben is and always will be Dante for me.

Vergil UGH

My disappointment is immeasurable.

If they got Johnny, they should have been able to at least get Dan Southworth to reprise his role as Vergil

But NOPE instead we got Robbie Daymond, Fucking Goro Akechi is voicing Vergil and my god it is SO wrong!

Nothing against Robbie Daymond or Akechi, I did like Akechi in Persona 5, but honestly, just because Robbie has played a character who is smart, and also uses big words, does NOT mean he can be Vergil

Robbie's Vergil is way too deep, and honestly me hearing that voice coming from Vergil, just will not do it. It's cringe to me since I'm so used to Dan.

If they couldn't get Dan, they should have at least hired a VA who has a similar tone of voice, not someone who is so distinctly different in voice tone. As talented as Robbie Daymond is, he can NOT be Vergil, the casting choice just doesn't fit. Even if he can carry the villain vibe Vergil has, Dan speaks as Vergil in distinct vocal patterns, he has unique mannerisms for Vergil that can never be replicated.

That rolly- tone to Vergil's voice is just WAY too iconic to be replaced. So this version of Vergil is NEVER gonna be my Vergil

Daniel Southworth is and ALWAYS will be Vergil for me

He's the only voice for Vergil and no one can EVER change my mind.

And don't even get me started on what they did to Lady, she is NOTHING like her video game counterpart. Lady as a cop wearing fake ass Robocop armor? Nah man, just no. She's a Devil Huntress, not a modern-day human Robocop. UGH. Plus the disrespect to Sparda in there pisses me off.

And finally

3. The Plot and Game Lore:

There obviously isn't much known about the plot, but from some of the storyboards I've seen and things they've painted a picture of in the trailer sounds like a whole original story, while The White Rabbit is in here, we're missing Alice, she was in the DMC 3 manga and played a big part in the manga. In the anime, it looks like the White Rabbit is trying to start the second war between humans and demons, and while that sounds exciting, I actually predicted that they would probably differentiate from the Manga, which isn't always a bad thing, but it makes me wonder what the hell they are gonna do with this whole war thing.

Probably the only thing I can appreciate about this anime, is that they at least seem to respect the game's lore and history, because in the anime opening (Which I still think is fucking wild they went with Limp Bizkit of all bands) there's a part in the opening where they Show Arius (DMC 2 main boss) Arkham (Devil May Cry 3) and even show Mundus (DMC 1)

Overall

I think it's safe to say that Netflix has let us down again.

I was trying SO hard to be optimistic about this anime

But now honestly, after seeing what they did do Dante, but more importantly, my Devil man Vergil, and how badly they butchered him, I'm more than likely gonna be skipping this new DMC anime.

I'm not even gonna make icons for this version of Vergil, because he's fucking hideous in here.

My heart is set on the DMC I know and love

Not this new version they are making.

I guess I should have seen this coming since Adi Shankar plans to merge DMC and Castlevania together, both anime's are garbage imo

And trash belongs with other trash.
