When one side of the fandom lies bleeding while the other one is thriving or how I learned about fandom wars the hard way

This is a message from someone whose beloved ship rests forever in the depths of the ocean.

We had high hopes. It looked like our ship was afloat and ready to explore the seven seas for three seasons. Then, the show got a new showrunner who was very homophobic, and from that point on, the show and our favorite ship went downhill. Even though I'd been in different fandoms for about fifteen years and should have known better, I let myself get caught up in an unprecedented fandom war. Those who favored the Het couple were attacking one half of our ship, not just his character but the actor. Don't think they don't know what's going on just because an actor isn't on social media. We knew some crew members and learned that everyone knew about this fandom war.

The whole thing escalated until the show's final episode, which came to a more than undignified end after ten years. Knowing what he was doing, the showrunner wrote an ending that damaged the show and destroyed our ship. It was bad. There were words like, "Now we're dancing on your grave," and much worse. I was mentally at the end of my rope at that point. Then, the sets were immediately dismantled after the last scene was shot. It's something that happens very rarely when a show reaches some cult status. Our ship didn't even do a joint farewell interview for the fans because the actors left the set quickly and never looked back.

Why am I telling you this? Because I've learned to observe things from a certain distance.

We are fans of the same show but have different priorities and ships. As a multi-shipper, it's easier, I'd say. But those who are running amok right now because their ship is staying in the harbor while another is sailing away with flying colors brings back extremely unpleasant memories to me. But the same goes for those who are just as happy about what's happening and are starting to lose their grip. Please take it from someone badly burned: This is not a competition. This is not me winning and you losing. It's deceptive to think you're on the winning side and make fun of others for it. The tide can turn. We don't know what the showrunner has in mind. We don't even know that season eight might not be the last. Take what we have right now and be thankful for it. Enjoy it while it lasts. But don't be tempted to point fingers and mock others or say, "Your ship will never be canon. Mine already is. Your ship is crap. Mine is better." Also, do not be fooled by the fact that the haters in the fandom are a small group of people who only appear to be many because of their vocality and because some are playing the old sock puppet account game again to make it look like they are many.

I can only tell you from experience that we should treat each other respectfully. Not every Buddie fan is an enemy. Unfortunately, I also see another phenomenon that is becoming more and more common. Fans barely dare to post anything for fear of the crazies in the fandom (which unfortunately exist on both sides). Fans who have nothing to do with a fandom war want to have fun. And if they have a ship, they just want to interact with like-minded people. Which - especially on X - seems to turn into a gauntlet. Because suddenly, Your Rudeness sneaks into the conversation and starts pissing on the timeline. For clowns like this, the block button still works. Getting involved in any discussion is pointless. I also had to pay dearly for this realization.

"Never wrestle with a pig because you'll both get dirty, and the pig likes it." - Positive energy is much more powerful than negative energy. If you stay positive, negativity can't touch you. Oh, and I've wrestled a lot of pigs. Other than excessive blood pressure, gastritis, and countless sleepless nights, it didn't do me any good.

Stop participating in dick-measuring contests. Stop bragging about your favorite ship and how the others are nothing but losers. Stop saying we won because we didn't. Again, this is not a contest. We are on equal footing, and we can all coexist in peace. There is plenty of room. For everyone, for every ship, for every fan. Oliver made a single statement for those unhappy with Buck's journey and his current travel companion. He dropped it for good. And I couldn't agree more with the message and how he did it.

Of course, we would like to see more of our ship. Of course, we want the actors to have a relationship storyline to sink their teeth into, and hopefully, we get to see some domestic stuff and some hot scenes. But so far, that is fanon and not canon. So far, there is usually more going on off-screen than we see. We can only hope that this will change. Those who call themselves open-minded and tolerant while going on a witch hunt should think twice about what those words mean, and they should live them and not just throw shallow phrases around.

My wish for the future of this fandom is that it becomes a safe place. Safe as in a h*te-free zone. A place where no one has to be afraid to speak their mind. And a place where you can express (constructive) criticism without getting a shitstorm. Peace out.

lmao buck didnt ditch tommy last episode, he just made a pit stop before going to spend the night with tommy, like do you think he spent the whole night there? and yeah, this episode, if he does leave tommy to go help eddie, that's what friends do ?? like what do you expect him to do, just ignore his friends life completely falling apart? buck is an adult relationship and adults respect the fact that they arent always going to be no 1 first priority ALL of the time. tommy respects that, especially because eddie is actively in a spiral, and honestly it's really refreshing to see such a healthy depiction of the balance between romantic/platonic relationships. i mean how many times have other couples been interrupted by similar emergencies, this is literally the emergency show like. yeah obviously when there is an emergency, the characters are going to drop everything and go to it. I swear you people have never had adult relationships, romantic or platonic, because you see a normal healthy relationship and are incapable of enjoying it. "not anti bi buck, just anti tommy kinard" not anti bi buck, just anti any relationship buck has with a man that isn't eddie

if you think buck left eddie’s house after hearing eddie say the words “yeah me too” in reference to being worried about him, then you do not know buck at all.

also when have we seen tommy respecting anything with buck? you all live in these made up scenarios that lou blabs on cameo when in reality all we have seen is tommy constantly be dismissive towards buck unless buck is actively paying sole attention to him. that is not a perfect and healthy relationship.

tommy is constantly speaking down to buck, calling him “kid” and refusing to call buck by the name he chose for himself. that is not the sign of someone who cares about buck to me.

as for being against any relationship buck is in with s man…. give me a man who actually shows that he gives a flying fuck about buck. give me a man who isn’t constantly being condescending and rude. give me a man who’s whole backstory wasn’t as a tool to put hen and chimney through hell at the 118. if buck was dating literally any other guy i wouldn’t be anywhere near as fed up with this plotline; but the fact of the matter is we have BARELY seen anything between them that isn’t tommy being a dick to buck unless buck is kissing him. that doesn’t read as a positive and healthy relationship to me. you all claim to care about buck so much, but then actively defend everything tommy does that is rude and condescending to buck as if buck somehow deserves it.

i am capable of enjoying normal healthy adult relationships because i have watched this show for seven years. i have seen these characters drop things for emergencies. i have picked up on the patterns they have laid down in previous storylines. i have experience working in filmmaking and know how to read into things.

normally i look at these asks and laugh because i don’t like to give a platform to people like you who hide begind anon to try and make buddie shippers out to be monsters but the fact that that post hasn’t even been up for ten minutes and you already felt the need to type a whole anon ask about how wrong i am when none of what you’ve pointed out has any canonical evidence of living in the truth? i have to laugh.

There's something about Yoshida that makes you seethe.

It isn't a personal slight. You've only spoken directly to him a handful of times, but he's never been rude or out of line. He isn't overly friendly with anyone, either. He's infuriatingly unreadable, though that perpetual smirk he wears makes you think he views everything as a joke. It drives you insane; you try very hard to not harbor true hatred for anyone, but Yoshida just might be the exception to your rule.

"Why are you being so quiet?"

You roll your eyes, but don't bother looking up. You know exactly who is standing over your table. "You're blocking my light," you say, jotting down a few more notes. You will not give him the satisfaction of your attention.

His voice drips with amusement; his tone is mocking, and you're horrified to see his hand plastered over the page you're trying to read. "Aw, sorry about that. Maybe it's time to take a break. You look really tired."

"Thanks for your concern, but I'm fine." You scowl at his hand and consider pushing him away from your book, but that would involve touching him. The thought alone makes you recoil; you opt to grab the corners of your book and tug it closer to you. He holds firm, bearing down with his weight, laughing.

"I'm serious. You really ought to go look out the window or something."

"Can you just leave me alone?" You raise your voice, feeling your face grow warm. A few feet away, someone says shhhhh and now you're angry and embarrassed. "What do you want from me, anyway?"

Yoshida leans down so that his face is less than a foot away from you. He ducks even lower to try and make you look at him. You avoid him still, leaning back in your chair and keeping your eyes downcast. "My friend thinks you're cute."

If you clench your jaw any harder, you'll crack a tooth. You swallow hard around the sudden dryness in your throat and dare a glance at him, though you still don't meet his intense stare. You focus instead on the row of piercings that follow the cusp of his ear. There are at least seven, with a possible eighth hiding beneath a dark shock of hair. "Well, your friend should tell me that, not you."

Yoshida laughs. It's low and breathy, and as close as he is, you can smell the bubblegum he's been chewing. "He's really shy, actually."

"What do you want me to do about it?"

"You should talk to him."

"No thanks, I'm busy." You grab for your textbook again and tug a little harder, but you catch your finger on the corner of a couple of pages. The sting of a papercut makes you suck in a breath through your teeth. A tiny line of blood appears at the surface, and before you're able to grab a tissue from your bag, Yoshida grabs your wrist.

He sticks your finger in his mouth before you can register what's even happening.

For the first time since he's stood at your table, you make eye contact. It doesn't surprise you that his eyes are sparkling with mirth and mischief. You're too shocked to pull your hand away; you feel his tongue swipe over the cut before he lets go, sealing it with a tiny kiss.

"Anyway," he says, slipping a folded neon pink post-it between the pages of your book, "you should call my friend. Maybe you'll like him, too."

He stands back to his full height and shoves his hands in his pockets before walking away. You watch him for a second, still not able to really process what just happened. Shaking your head, you decide it's best to just pack it up for the day. The pink post-it mocks you in much the same manner Yoshida did. With a sigh, you unfold it and somehow aren't surprised when you see what is written on the inside.

A phone number. A dumb smiley face. And Hirofumi Yoshida's name.

Hello, this is the last post I am making that will explain my personal experience with physical nonhumanity. I will no longer answer replies that ask me about it, and I will end up blocking if you keep asking. Take this as a "I don't wish to talk about it, so read this post or leave me alone" type thing. If that bothers you, that's a you problem. I don't feel like explaining myself a million times.

Reminder, this is my personal experience. It differs from individual to individual.

I am a werebat. Do I transform? No. The name is a misnomer somewhat. I am just an anthropomorphic bat. The "human" thing everyone sees, including myself, is a veil, a façade, but it doesn't come off.

My physical nonhumanity (my physical, not any other part of my nonhumanity) is stemmed specifically from trauma, neurodivergency, a coping mechanism, very partially delusions, and very partially a choice.

This ties partially into how I am a bat therian. I am more known as a circukin, and am also a bat plushkin and fictionkin of a bat character.

Are you allowed to "reality check" me? No. Most of you who are doing it are just trying to be assholes, and you don't even ask me if that's what I want anyway.

From now on I am limiting replies to my posts because some choose to ask when the post has nothing to do with myself.

my last post about this because i’m just tired of it.

i never harassed anyone. i never bullied anyone. i never wanted the harringrove cafe blog to shut down/close. this whole thing is being blown out of proportion, so i’m going to tell y’all what happened on my end (with screenshots).

on friday, i went to send out a few treats to a couple friends before the end of the night so they could be sent out the following day — you can see them on the harringrove cafe rn. i signed them with my name because i didn’t want them to be anonymous, i wanted my friends to know it was me. i sent one to Max, unaware of the fact that he was blacklisted, and eagerly waited for my friends to see them the following day.

the others were sent out one by one on saturday, except Max’s. so, i went to ask about it and this is exactly how the convo went:

i messaged about the missing treat, ivy got back to me, i told him which one was missing, he replied that he wasn’t comfortable due to an incident that happened that i had (and still have) no idea what it was about, felt upset that my friend wouldn’t get his treat even tho my other friends got treats. if i hadn’t reached out, i’m not sure if Ivy would’ve even told me that Max wasn’t receiving treats, so i would have never known that this blacklist was happening. so, i thought about it for a bit before telling him how i felt. he sent a screenshot and a final message before blocking me a minute after sending it.

and that’s it.

i felt hurt when i was blocked because previously Ivy and i had been friends, or were at least cool with each other and never had any issues or conflict, so i felt upset by this. i never pressed his boundaries. i never told him to send Max my treat. i was just expressing myself. i wasn’t rude, i even apologized for sharing my thoughts. but he still lowkey blew up at me and is now going off about how i’m a bitch and that he’s closing the cafe over this, which i never wanted or intended.

i made my vent post because i wanted to vent my frustrations. it wasn’t a vague post or public call out because it was a vent post.

i called the exclusion of people from a positivity blog incredibly mean because excluding people from something is mean. i don’t stand with bullying, which is what y’all are doing right now by calling me names.

i’m allowed to be upset about things. i’m allowed to vent on my own blog. i’m allowed to voice my opinions.

i will say that im very sorry and deeply regretful for the drama this has caused, as i never intended for any of it, but i’m not going to let these people step all over me and spread a narrative that isn’t true.

and most of all, thank you to the people that have reached out to check on me, i appreciate and love you 🤍

the dunmeshi yuri discourse feels wild to me because it just feels like the wrong series to be doing this with. yes farcille is a juggernaut ship but like. the series is still made up of a mostly male cast and the more important side characters are also male. for a while its just marcille until izutsumi gets added and she's a teenager so no shipping with most characters for her. if we're being honest this is not a series where its a shock or an upset for there to be more m/m.

not to mention that farcille is still the most overall popular dunmeshi ship on ao3 by far, the m/m to f/f ratio seems to me that there are several m/m ships being rotated around where with f/f its mostly farcille with a couple of minor ships. the only other f/f ship ive seen any consistent content for in the fandom is namari/kiki, a little bit of izutsumi/tade, and some canary ladies.

While dunmeshi is a great series that resists a lot of anime tropes about portraying women and body types I feel like we still owe it to ourselves to be honest in that most of the central character are men who, with the exception of senshi, are pretty slim, women included (falin is fat in my HEART-). I dont really say this to critique ryoko kui, but just because I think its best to temper our expectations about what the story actually includes. you cant hang everything on "but look how well farcille is written" when, while I do love them, falin admittedly spends a good chunk of the series as a plot device more then a person. the glimpses of her self we get are really fascinating to me, and I would confidently say she's a character in her own right, but it would be disingenuous to claim she couldn't have used more screen time or depth into how she feels during all this crazy shit that's happened to her.

what was with cameron house md she spends 90% of the episode saying she wants their patient to die bc he's a genocidal dictator and her colleague husband says "babe it bothers me for ethical reasons that you want our patient to die :(" and she said "hm maybe you're right :/" but when it comes down to it the genocidal dictator lays a finger on her in an aggressive manner and chase instantly commits medical malpractice to murder the guy and then when he tells her she LEAVES HIM bc boo hoo he's a murderer now like GIRL he killed a man for you!!! he's wracked with catholic guilt!!! he's being crushed beneath the weight of his sins because he chose his devotion to you over his devotion to god!!! he literally could not get any sexier at this moment in time!!!

sometimes when total strangers commit the crime of being annoying in my reblogs i DM them or reply @ them before blocking simply due to the autistic need to be understood. BUT i have rules for when i'm allowed to do that.

1. i'm not allowed to do it without running the scenario past a groupchat to make sure i'm justified in annoyance and not simply evil (due to migraine, hangry, etc) 2. i have to make it constructive and helpful feedback, such that they can avoid getting blocked in future interactions. which sometimes makes me feel like i'm some sort of tumblr user manners training wizard. eg:

Hullo to my fellow fandom creators.

How you guys doing? Good? Good.

I just wanted to drop you a little note to say I hope you’re all having fun out here. Because fun is what it’s all about, right? Fun and excitement and hobbies and interests and all that good stuff!

While I’ve been wandering about in my little corner here at tumblr dot com, I gotta tell you, it can be so easy to get discouraged sometimes. Like SO easy. And I dunno folks, I guess I just wanted to remind you (and me!) that when we create stuff for our fandoms, it’s for fun! Because we love it! Because we love making it! We love sharing it! We love the source material and the characters and the world-building and all that other neat stuff!

Sometimes we all need a little reminder, I find. Because sometimes people don’t like what we’re making. Sometimes they’ll be rude or complain and make demands about how fandom "cOnTeNt” (yuck) should be made (double yuck) and act kind of entitled about it. And idk, that gets kind of disheartening. Especially when you’re pouring all your heart and soul into what you’re making, simply for the love of it.

So! Yeah I just wanted to check in with you folks because I’m seeing a lot of that weird entitlement in various fandoms lately, and from one creator to another, I wanted to just say -if I may wax poetic for a moment here- nuts to those people. Nuts to ‘em. NUTS, I TELL YOU.

Not everyone is going to like the stuff you make, and that's okay. The important thing is to remember that their opinions have nothing to do with you or me or anyone else making art or fics or edits or whatever our little hearts desire. Just because what you're making doesn't tick someone else's personal boxes doesn't mean that what you're making is wrong or bad!

If people want specific stuff in fandom, they can make it. If they don’t like what we’re making, they can move on - that's fine. If they want to publicly whine about it and try to make it everyone else's problem, that's their baggage and we don't have to take any of that on board. It’s no reflection on you if someone wants to demand that their own specific tastes be met, rather than actually taking part in the community in a positive way. Because we’re here for fun, aren’t we.

So, I've been thinking over this, and I'm really not trying to come across as rude or offend anyone with my take, but...

What exactly does this fandom want from this game and its characters?

Do y'all want a game featuring good, uncomplicated human men who live by good, uncomplicated human standards and never do anything wrong but with tails, horns, and wings?

Or do y'all want a game about the literal lords of hell and whatever that may entail?

Because I can't be the only one who finds it ironic that the characters who act the most like demons are widely disliked, while the characters who act less like demons are widely liked, right? In a game about dating demons, being demonic or showing any kind of character flaw isn't attractive, and those of us who actually do enjoy the darker themes, when we do get them, are treated as having somehow failed morally for liking it. It makes no sense to me.

And this is in spite of so many posts from this fandom stating how they want their "demons to be demons." That they want complex and interesting characters. That they want to feel like they're in a realm surrounded by devils and engage with all the hostilities and angst and drama and blood that comes along with that, yet in the same breath, can't even handle characters like Lucifer, Belphegor, Asmodeus, Solomon, Simeon, and Diavolo. Characters who aren't exactly nice or fully transparent about their goals or actions. Characters who are a little or a lot fucked up. Characters who are gray at worse, but ultimately, show they are capable of being more. Even if poorly executed by the writers, they tried to show us, to some extent, exactly what we've been asking for. Now we rarely get events or chapters where the brothers so much as even swat a fly, and I can't help but blame that on the knee jerk reaction of the fandom to scream about anything less than flattering.

Which is why I can't help but wonder if Obey Me! Nightbringer does happen to touch on darker themes and characterization, than I can only imagine how well the fandom will handle any of it (my guess is poorly).
