One thing I’ve seen people talking about as a possible solution to the whole gods issue is turning the gods mortal—permanently.
Remove the throne entirely. Put gods and mortals on the same playing field. This option does have one obvious benefit: if the gods are like everybody else, then the damage they can inflict is severely reduced.
But I don’t think this is as clean an answer as people think it is, for multiple reasons. My first question would be “what happens to clerics and paladins?” Now, we know that divine magic exists outside the gods, but the vast majority of clerics and paladins (aka our primary healers) get their magic from gods. I imagine learning how to harness that magic outside the gods would be a pretty steep learning curve, so removing that source of power would cause a whole boatload of issues for healthcare in Exandria.
Another problem would be the mass amounts of social upheaval due to the loss of these divine figures. Wars would be fought, communities destroyed, massive power vacuums opened— thousands would die if the gods were destroyed (or made mortal.) Not to mention, the power vacuums and violence opened up on planes other than Exandria. Celestials and angels would be leaderless and directionless, demons would be free to wreak havoc on other planes. Devils are explicitly kept in line by the Lord of the Hells, without him to control them, what effect would the resulting power-struggle have on Exandria and the rest of the planes?
My third question would be how this change would effect their domains? I don’t think it would erase them entirely, the world is here and here to stay, but much like the social upheaval I think there would be much upheaval in how Exandria functions. The domains the gods rule over would be left on their own, with no one to guide or direct them. This, I imagine, would have its own set of benefits and drawbacks.
My fourth question is, would turning the current gods mortal prevent new gods from ascending? Or would it just leave the throne open, like Ashton said. Unless the concept of godhood was removed entirely, wouldn’t this problem just repeat itself? With no guarantee that those new gods will be at all merciful or tolerant towards mortals. Additionally, I have to ask what this would mean for near-godly entities. What about Archfey, Archdevils, Demon Lords, Archangels, and other Demi-powers? Where do they fit in this new order? They give spells, have worshippers, hold powers greater than mortals could imagine. How much power is too much power to have when it is fundamental to one’s nature?
I want to take a moment to talk about a scene from the Witch, the Wizard, and the Wild One, which is run by Bleem himself and has Lou Wilson, Erika Ishii, and Aabria Iyengar as players (which you should definitely check out it’s so good y’all). Heavy Spoilers for Arc 1 ahead:
In the city of Port Talon, our heroes learn that the wizards of the Citadel have imprisoned the great spirit of the ocean, Naram, underneath the barracks out in the harbor. Naram is a gentle spirit, and has been holding back from freeing himself, because he knows that in doing so he would destroy Port Talon. Naram’s wife, Orima of the Reaching Green, is not a gentle spirit, and has been encircling the city with deadly kudzu to try to free Naram. Eursulon, one of our heroes, frees Naram but gets trapped in his place. Naram stays to free Eursulon in turn, and has a moment of decision to make. Ame, the Witch of the World’s Heart, can influence this decision. Either Naram can sacrifice himself to free Eursulon, destroying himself but sparing Citadel forces. Or, he can choose to destroy the barracks, freeing Eursulon but damming the Citadel Wizards and their forces.
Ame and Naram chose violence, and the barracks are destroyed. The scene is truly horrifying, the destruction and death extraordinary even while Naram is being as precise as he can be. He is simply too vast a being to be delicate amongst humanity, despite all his efforts. He still loves Port Talon, still chooses mercy whenever he can. He is just on another playing field entirely.
I want to note, however, that the vastness of his being doesn’t make him evil. It doesn’t make Orima evil, despite her propensity for extreme violence and antagonism towards our heroes. They think a lot like humans, but aren’t human. Their morality is not the same as ours, and that informs their actions. Naram’s destruction would have, perhaps, reduced the net violence that occurred. But it also would have removed a source of great magic and wonder from the world, one that could never have been gotten back. Who are we to destroy or change a being simply because they do not play by our rules? Simply because they act in accordance to their nature and are greater than us?
(Spoilers over)
The last question I want to ask is one more about the personal ethics in turning the gods mortal. Because if you think about it for a minute, it’s really fucked up actually. This isn’t reappropriating wealth from a rich person, this is fundamentally changing the gods’ nature. Likely by force for a lot of them. And I’m sorry, there are so many ethical issues with that.
It’s important to keep in mind, while the gods are quite human-like, they aren’t human. The gods we see in downfall are a fraction of their true power and their true selves, filtered through a mortal lens. They are messy and emotional and have complex feeling and emotions but they are also greater concepts like nature and law and destruction. You cannot separate these two sides of them, you cannot separate the mortal from the divine. To do so would fundamentally change their beings, and that has absolutely horrifying implications.
I’m reminded of a scene from the Last Unicorn, where the unicorn wakes up in a human body. She is horrified, weeping and crying about what she has lost. She can feel her body is different, it’s wrong, it’s dying around her and she can do nothing to stop it. Her mind is human and her memory of her life before fades. She becomes a unicorn again by the end of the movie, but she is forever changed. Forever burdened by knowing love and loss and pain. Something she was never supposed to know.
What would happen if you removed Asha from the Wildmother? You are being that is one with the world and knows the roots of every plant, can hear the beating of every animal’s heart, are interwoven with the mountains and the forests and the rivers and the seas. And then, suddenly, all of that is gone. Suddenly you exist solely within a body of flesh and bone, one that ages and dies, one that forgets the life before. You cannot feel the roots, you cannot hear the heartbeats, the mountains and the forests and the rivers and the seas are no longer yours. Are no longer you. Would that be more or less horrifying than becoming real, do you think?
In some ways, you are capable of changing, now. You can be anything. But you are no longer eternal. You are limited in the scope of what is you. And isn’t that another horror?
Congratulations, the gods are mortal. You’re on the same playing field, but the world has lost a great source of magic and wonder. You have changed them. I hope it was worth it.
Maybe Tishar is right. We really do love destroying things we don’t understand.
In the end, I don’t think there are any clear or clean answers here. Everything is going to be messy, there’s always going to be someone left unsatisfied. I’m just laying out my thoughts on the matter, and why turning the gods human isn’t as clean a solution as people seem to think it is.

Unlocking Insights: The Power of AI Data Science
In today's digital world, AI Data Science is like a magic wand, revealing hidden treasures in the vast sea of information that surrounds us. It's not just about numbers and codes; it's about uncovering valuable insights that can shape the future. Let's embark on a journey to explore the transformative power of AI Data Science and how it's changing the way we understand the world around us.
1. What is AI Data Science?
AI Data Science is like having a super-smart detective for all the data we collect. It's a blend of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science, where computers are trained to learn from data patterns and make intelligent decisions. Think of it as teaching a computer to think and analyze like a human brain but at lightning speed!
2. The Rise of AI Data Science
Over the years, the amount of data we generate has exploded. From social media posts to online purchases, every click and tap leaves a digital footprint. AI Data Science has risen to the challenge of making sense of this data deluge. Companies and organizations are using it to predict trends, understand customer behavior, and even discover new medicines.
3. Why It Matters
Imagine a world where doctors can predict diseases before they even show symptoms, or where businesses can tailor products exactly to your needs. That's the promise of AI Data Science. It's not just about making things convenient; it's about saving lives, optimizing resources, and making the world a better place.
4. How AI Data Science Works
At its core, AI Data Science works by feeding algorithms (smart mathematical formulas) tons of data. These algorithms then learn from this data, spotting patterns and making predictions. For example, they can analyze shopping habits to recommend products or study weather patterns to predict storms.
5. Applications in Everyday Life
AI Data Science is all around us, often working quietly behind the scenes. When you search for a movie on Netflix and see recommendations, that's AI Data Science. When your phone's keyboard predicts your next word, that's AI Data Science too. It's in healthcare, finance, transportation, and nearly every industry you can think of.
6. Challenges and Ethical Considerations
With great power comes great responsibility. AI Data Science isn't without its challenges. There are concerns about privacy, bias in algorithms, and the impact on jobs. For example, if AI can do a job better and faster than a human, what does that mean for employment?
7. The Future of AI Data Science
The future is exciting and full of possibilities. We're already seeing AI Data Science in self-driving cars, personalized medicine, and even in creating art. As technology advances, so will our ability to harness the power of AI Data Science for good.
8. Learning AI Data Science
Want to dive into this fascinating field? There are tons of resources available online. From courses on platforms like Coursera and Udacity to free tutorials on YouTube, anyone with an internet connection can start learning. Who knows? You might be the next AI Data Science wizard!
9. Final Thoughts
AI Data Science is not just a buzzword; it's a revolution. It's changing the way we live, work, and interact with the world. As we continue to unlock its potential, let's also remember to use it responsibly and ethically. The power of AI Data Science is in our hands, and how we wield it will shape the future for generations to come.
In conclusion, AI Data Science is not just a tool; it's a beacon of innovation and discovery. It's about turning data into insights, unlocking the secrets of the universe, and making our world a smarter, better place. So, let's embrace this journey of exploration and marvel at the wonders AI Data Science has in store for us.

Something more infinite (George Weasley x reader) ch. 3
Chapter 3: Sticks and Stones will break my bones, and so will you because you knocked me off your broom, you maniac!
Tumblr media
Chapters: 1 | 2 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 (final) |
Word count: 2.4K
Warnings: Light swearing, TW: broken bones, injury.
In the midst of the busy O.W.L oriented fifth year, you were so grateful for flying lessons. At this point you were being buried in books and assignments to the point of having to reduce your prank wars with the twins to the weekends only (which was easier to carry out now that they’d seemingly lost their map sometime over Christmas). As the snow began to melt away and the spring was coming along, so were the exams and you had so much on your plate you were afraid you’d choke. Flying lessons were a breath of fresh air, literally, since they were spent away from the dusty halls and classrooms out on the grounds and on the quidditch pitch, which was where you were now. Madam Hooch understood that her fifth year students were more than fed up with information from all their other subjects and since flying was not an exam subject, she’d softened on your class during this late afternoon class. She’d allowed you to part up into teams and play amateur quidditch games in a mini-quidditch cup.
The students from the houses decided on their teams quickly, since only the most competitive students were up for playing, the rest of the students seemed to welcome this chance of sitting still and concentrating on something that wasn’t reading for 90 minutes with open arms. The teams were mixed houses, and originally when it had been announced that the lesson was going to be spent on quidditch, you’d planned on sitting back and zoning out so hard you’d forget where you were, maybe take a nap, either way, you were not intending on playing.
At least until George and Fred Weasley loudly joined a team. There was a sort of hush over the conversation, Madam Hooch called out for a chaser for the team opposing the twin’s team. No one wanted to play. People were well aware of the twin’s affinity for quidditch, even you had to admit that they were talented beaters, and you fully understood why none of your classmates were particularly interested in facing off with bludgers sent by them right before the end of year exams. So how you managed to volunteer yourself was unknown even to you. But there you were, on a broom, ready for take off. George looked positively giddy, and you wished you’d volunteered earlier as beater. You’d love to have a bat to retaliate with. You don’t show it, but the knowledge of George’s skills as a beater, and the fact that you don’t have a single way of keeping yourself from being hit by an iron ball pelted towards you is your flying skills makes you a little nervous. You’re not a bad flyer, but you’re not on the quidditch team for a reason. You try to brush off the fear as Madam Hooch blows her whistle and starts the game. The game isn’t as high speed as the offical quidditch games, since most of the teams are just regular, extremely exhausted students, which you’re thankful for. You do your best to keep up and actually manage to almost score before the bludgers come at you. Fred seems to be targeting people at random, mostly trying to get players away from the goal posts, but George only seems to have eyes for you, even when you don’t have the quaffle. Luckily for you, you manage to dodge the bludgers well enough by attempting to stay far away from George, though this doesn’t seem to make him focus on anyone else. When you assist in your team scoring and a bludger zooms by your ear so close to your head you nearly fall off you broom, you become fed up. You speed towards George,
“Would you fuck off?” You yell at him, he grins back at you, he hasn’t even broken a sweat yet while you can feel how flushed your cheeks are, same as the rest of your team, for some reason this makes you even more annoyed,
“Why? I’m just doing my job?” he replies,
“Y/n!” Someone yells and suddenly there’s a quaffle being thrown at you which you catch. There’s a split second which feels like an eternity where you and George look at each other, then he looks at the quaffle and a smirk appears on his face which genuinely makes you uncomfortable. This is not the same expression he’s worn whilst tormenting you in ways that could easily be described as childish teasing. No, this smirk is pure malice, and you know all too well what he plans on. The second long eternity ends and you speed off, swearing under your breath. You’re never volunteering for a game of quidditch against George again. First a bludger attempts to knock you off your broom but you’ve seen that coming so you do a spin and avoid it, what you haven’t expected is George appearing at your side, trying to push you away from the goal posts by blocking you. You’re used to him blocking you in general though, and you’re not having this. You’re not going to let him win. You don’t care what it takes; he’s not defeating you. Even if he has to knock you off your broom. And he does have to, because when you push into him in an attempt to signal “hey, I sort of meant that ‘fuck off’ thing I said earlier.” He pushes back. And there’s a slight error in your calculations, because you’ve forgotten that George is not only taller than you, he’s also stronger. A lot stronger. His shoulder knocks the wind out of you as you try to stay on your broom, hold on to the quaffle and not steer into the spectator stands. But you’re still hanging on. You’re not down yet. So you decide to push back again, and before he can knock you off your broom you dive underneath him, in an attempt to escape on the other side of him, if you could do that you could score. Here’s the thing though: George notices what you’re doing, from the years of playing quidditch, he’s become quite good at recognising manoeuvres before people even do them, and you’re a beginner, which means your moves are obvious. So as you appear on the other side of him, before he even registers what he’s doing, he spins and kicks out, as he would in any regular quidditch game, his foot knocking you off your broom in a swift but forceful movement.
And everything seems to slow down as you fall, letting the quaffle go. You don’t register anything as you fall, other than the very notion that you’re falling and then the conclusion that if you’re falling, you’ll probably also land. And you just sort of hope you won’t die or break anything too important. You do land, on the sand, with a thump that shakes your bones and reverberates through your every cell. Your vision blurs as everything happens very quickly and very slowly at the same time. In this blurry version of the world, people land around you in slow motion though they seem to appear by your side almost instantly. Madam Hooch’s voice is ringing in your ears. Someone asks if you’re alright. You feel yourself nod, then wince as the pain registers in your shoulder and arm. Then the rest of your body follows suit. Madam Hooch and some classmates help you stand after checking in to see if you’re able to stand. To your own amazement you can, and as you do you lock tearfilled eyes with George’s.
George wished he could describe the way he felt in that moment as he saw you fall off your broom. It had felt like shock and victory combined into a strange slush of stomach dropping, heart soaring and nausea. It had taken him the remainder of the day to conclude that he hadn’t really meant to knock you off your broom. He didn’t know what he had intended on doing exactly, though. Most likely, he thought, he’d just wanted to win over you. To have another thing to rub in your face. And he supposed he did have that now. Only, he didn’t want to rub it in your face. He actually didn’t want to see you at all. Because for the first time ever, George felt something different inside him at the thought of seeing you. Something akin to the way he felt when he’d broken his sibling’s things on accident as a child and had to face them when they found out, something not unlike when he’d play-wrestled Ron and knocked one of his teeth loose, something like….No, George thought to himself, he was many things, but George was not feeling guilty because of you. He couldn’t be. Right?
Sure it had been unfair of him to underestimate his strength and of course he’d felt bad when you’d broken your collarbone and arm in the fall. He’d even considered seeing you in the hospital. He knew how horrible it was to drink skele-gro, after all. He hadn’t seen you though, he figured he was not the person you wanted to see. Besides he’d felt that weird need to avoid you. And avoid you he did. For the first time in almost three years, George Weasley had actively stayed away from you. He’d skived off the classes you had together, had sat far away from you in the great hall, often with his back turned to you, he’d simply done a 180 whenever he’d seen you in the halls or at the library. And this bloody feeling in the pit of his stomach wasn’t going away, which had kept him plenty busy with all the extra time he’d had from skiving off. The feeling had almost completely consumed him at this point, and he didn’t know what to do about it. He woke every morning with a strange expectation that a howler would come from his mother, spend the few classes he had left in the school year awaiting McGonagall or even Professor Dumbledore himself to show up and pull him aside to scold him. He’d wandered every corridor with a feeling that he was trespassing when he had every right to be there. And he was sick of it. A small voice in his head told him to just apologise to you, but that little voice had no idea what it was really asking of him. Apologising to you would mean he’d have to lose face to you, and for some reason George would rather have his fingers hexed off one by one than be vulnerable in front of you.
When he did see you it was in Hogsmeade on the last visit before the summer vacation began. He’d been at the three broomsticks with Lee and Fred, celebrating that they were officially done with exams and studying. He’d been chosen to go order their drinks on the argument that he was the one closest to the bar. And as he’d been waiting on his order, he’d heard your unmistakable voice behind him. Turning around to face you, he noticed your arm enveloped in a cast, he’d heard the story in snippets from passersbys and offhand notions: complicated break, waiting list for st Mungo’s, weeks to recover completely. Every word had added a pebble to the pile of boulders in his stomach. You looked up at him and almost looked surprised to see him. He figured you would. It had been almost two months since you’d been face to face like this. coward another voice whispered in the back of George’s mind. He shrugged it off.
“Oh,” you say, “Hi, Weasley,” your e/c eyes have a certain gleam in them, he’s well aware it’s not from him, he’s heard you’ve done well on your exams despite the broken bones, he figures the gleam is from pride,
“Hi,” he replies dryly, say something, anything, say you’re sorry just speak dammit, George, “Nice cast,” he manages a smile but on the inside he’s curling into himself with horror, “want me to sign it?” as he says it the gleam in your eyes disappears, and the usual sour expression you wear when you speak to him paints itself on your face. To his own astonishment, it doesn’t bring the joy it usually does, it makes him feel sort of sick, actually, say you’re sorry, the voice begs again.
“You can sign your bank information, and I can send you the bill from St Mungo’s if you want,” you turn back to the bar, looking at a menu that you’ve already ordered from, “doubt you’ll be able to afford it though,” you say, slightly softer, and the weight of the boulders of guilt inside him becomes painful, he hadn’t thought about the cost of getting your bones fixed, and as an extra weight, you were right, he couldn’t afford to pay it. So he doesn’t answer. You glance up at him with a challenging gaze when he doesn’t but he just bites his lip to counter the pain inside him.
“Three butterbeers, Weasley,” Rosmerta says, placing the drinks on the bar,
“and three butterbeers and a soda for you, L/n” Rosmerta holds onto the tray with drinks, “Oh don’t worry about it, dear, let me carry the drinks to your table for you,” she says and sets off towards the table where your friends await you,
“I guess I’ll see you next year, Weasley,” you say, “and don’t think the arm is going to stop me from kicking your arse if you knock me off a broom again,” you grin at him, and a wave of elation runs through George at the sight of you grinning at him. It tells him that you’ve not resorted to hating him fully, at least not in a different way to how you hated him before. You were rivals, yes. But George would never consider you an enemy. Not that you were friends. He didn’t like you. He didn’t think he liked you, either way.
“Y/n?” The word slips out between his lips as your back is turned to him, he blinks a few times, trying to figure out what to say, you stare at him with an expression that seems to say “go on?”
“I’m-erh- I’ll see you next year,” he says.

Thoughts on the S-Class
Given the occasion of writing about Ivan’s loss of his S-Class title… I had to give “What does it mean to be S-Class wizard?” a thought. The Fandom Wiki doesn’t actually give all that much info, which is not surprising given the lack of world building in Fairy Tail… so I think the following headcanons are not too farfetched or unconvincing :D
Legal Status of a Guild
A guild requires the approval of the Magic Council to be “legal”. In order to get that stamp of acceptance, a guild must meet certain requirements and standards set by the Council. Such requirements could be, for example:
that the guild building must provide a place to learn and expand a mages skillset (library, training room etc)
that there is a break room or an opportunity to relax before and after jobs
that there is a bar or restaurant on site that can provide some basic refreshments
that there is access to some form of (free) healthcare, if not on site, at least in partnership with a local doctor/hospital
and that toilets and showers are appropriately provided
The Council supports new guilds in various ways until they can support themselves. Independent guilds do not receive any support and would have to stem all expenses themselves, however, they are also not required to offer any of the above and could simply be functioning without a base (see Crime Sorciere).
On top of infrastructure requirements, there are also certain behavioural rules. Members must be guaranteed a membership free of harassment, unwanted advertisement, no job or performance requirements, freedom to choose or deny any particular job, a safe working environment and more. Members who act against these terms and conditions, are subject to punishment, beginning at verbal warnings, written warnings, suspensions, re-training, rank deprivation and expulsion.
The Council is monitoring each legal guild and performs visits to make sure the standards are continuously met. Members can write the Council and notify them of any failure of the guild to appropriately deal with a situation and member misbehaviour. If the guild master does not appropriately handle a misconduct, they may be forced to resign or the entire guild is being ‘suspended’ until a solution has been found.
The Nature of Jobs for Legal Guilds
Clients are free to submit any job request they like, to any guild they like, in any format they like. Legal guilds may only accept such jobs that are within the law of the country they operate in, in this case Fiore. The Magic Council may be a global system to monitor the work of mages, provide structures and standards, but they are no form of government and thus follow their local laws as well.
Legal guilds are required to notify the authorities (both the Council and Fiore) of unlawful job requests, such as (but not limited to)
murder
bodily harm
theft
destruction
forgery of documents or items
impersonation
The Council does check the job request record of their legal guilds sporadically and unannounced.
Pro’s and Con’s of the Legal Guild
+ Financial support/grants/etc by the Council for start-ups
+ Administrative support and guidance
+ Legal insurance
+ Protection by other legal guilds in case of threat
+ Easy access to various resources for the wizard world (libraries, laboratories and more)
- Finances must be sorted alone
- No legal advise and support in case things go wrong
- No quality standard certificate for members or clients to trust in
- No protection for inter-guild, national or international conflict
A Note on Age in Fairy Tail
There is an intermediate legal age of 15, which enables access to certain things, such as
buying and consuming tobacco and alcohol
leaving school to learn a profession
participating in the local government in form of voting or applying for such a job position
For wizards, being 15 years allows to go on jobs individually or in teams with people of the same age or higher.
There is a full legal age of 21. This is required for some jobs but is mostly important for things such as taking on responsibility for other people (adopting children, becoming doctor or major etc)
Mages younger than 15 must go on jobs with at least ONE adult (age 21). There are jobs available for underage mages, provided they are age-appropriate.
And now the S-Class Specifics
The latest Council agreement on S-Class mages are as follows:
eligible members MUST be 15 years or older
physical fitness must be appropriate for serious fighting
magical strength must be above a certain MPF (Magic Power Finder) reading (let’s say at least 400-500 upwards, so that even among the Rune Knights and S-Class wizard would be only found on the very top ranks)
mental suitability must be given to allow the member to work under stress
initial (and ongoing) health checks by a doctor is necessary to avoid undetected illnesses to impede with the job (and vouch for the mental fitness)
S-Class mages must attend yearly meetings to be always up to date with the latest regulations and developments (otherwise their rank will expire)T
The perks and advantages of being S-Class mage are:
S-Class mages may supervise underage mages
S-Class mages can represent the guild master (with permission) on official meetings, even in the Council and cast a vote in his stead
S-Class mages may accept S-Class jobs individually or in teams of any constellation (even underage wizards)
S-Class mages can offer training OUTSIDE the guild (to people who are NOT guild members) (Magic Teachers must essentially be part of a guild and be classified as S-Class)
S-Class mages may work temporarily for other guilds without administrative hurdles
S-Class mages have a certain authority over Fiore citizens (wizard or not), when it comes to the unhindered completion of their job. They may demand support in any form and anyone who denies that is liable to legal prosecution
S-Class mages may access libraries and laboratories and other places that are under the direct control and ownership of the Council or Fiore, which are usually not accessible to normal people (some may still require an appointment to be made, such as the palace in Crocus or the Council’s magic prisons)
S-Class mages are also agreeing to be available for secret/special jobs as ordered by the Council or Fiore, should it deemed necessary. These requests cannot be refused (and are probably unpaid, too) unless there is a good reason for it (to explain this a bit further: If an S-Class job request, such as Galuna Island has gone on for long enough without response from a guild, the Council and Fiore may decide to “force” an appropriate S-Class Mage (or team thereof) to attend to the case, whether they like it or not).
So, being S-Class may be awesome because you can earn tons of money from one job, but it’s also binding you potentially to work for the Council or Fiore directly if there is need (and then it’s unpaid). You also need to attend annoying meetings and keep up to date with current magical developments. It’s certainly not for everyone and that isn’t bad either. It’s nice to be able to say NO to a job you don’t like or be free from certain responsibilities.

Human Cleric NPC Character Sheet
What class would you associate most with an antagonist in a D&D or Pathfinder campaign? Probably warlock/witch? Maybe a wizard? Perhaps even a rogue. But what about the cleric? After all, the cleric can serve evil just as easily as good. But, what if it’s not just evil that’s a problem? Law and chaos are on that alignment grid too, after all. And for today’s NPC character sheet, order is always the order of the day.
Pathfinder 1e Character Sheet: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-9ES6jwsznNwi-p8OWQlLtB1z1_aD55L/view?usp=sharing
Adventure Hooks: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11DDRW2w-IoNRlKr79JI9Nds4olBv6CURu-vxwAURHcY/edit?usp=sharing
Brigh’s Pathfinder Wiki Page: https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Brigh
The human cleric that I’ve chosen to make a sheet for is Lenox Acheson, whose domains are Knowledge and Fire. I wrote that he follows a god of industry and invention, of which there is one already made for Pathfinder which could work: Brigh, sometimes called the Whisper in Bronze. She is primarily concerned with crafting and research into mechanisms, constructs, and alchemy. But, as a True Neutral deity her followers can be Lawful Neutral, which would make sense for Lenox as someone trying to bring order to the world. In fact, he might see the world as a kind of mechanism which is not operating properly.
In Lenox’s view, the world would be a lot better if everyone were in a more efficient and advanced society. Because of this, he’s decided to start uniting the world by whatever means necessary. Now that’s not to say he’s cruel or unnecessarily destructive: that would go against the tenets of Brigh, and he is very faithful to his goddess. But he does lead an army to conquer new territory in the name of unity and progress. Traditional lifestyles are erased in the name of efficiency and differences in culture are being ignored. But his regime does make a number of improvements for the lives of people: free education and healthcare for everyone, meritocratic systems instead of aristocracy or castes, and improved living conditions all around.
So, is Lenox an ally or enemy? That’s up for you and your players to decide.
P.S. Remember you don’t have to use Brigh specifically as the deity, I just used her as a helpful example!

TSI - Chapter 1 Notes
Here are my full notes and commentary for Chapter 1 of my Harry Potter fic 'The Snake Inside'.
Chapter 1 can be found here.
Throughout the chapter there are numbers in parentheses, these numbers correspond to the below notes. To best understand what I’m talking about in the notes I would recommend opening the story in a second tab and following along from there.
(notes begin under the cut)
1. This is, if you hadn’t noticed, lifted directly from the book, I do do this a couple times however, this is the only one that is italicized. I’m going to try and point out the other instances in chapter notes as well.
2. Another line lifted from the book, although here it has slightly different context
3. This was another line from the book, although again it has slightly different context (also I swear these notes aren’t just going to be me citing passages from the book)
4. I was actually really conflicted over this. Dudley is obviously incredibly spoiled so I figured it made sense that if for once Harry had something that he didn’t that he would throw a fit and demand he get the same. What I wasn’t confident about was how Petunia or Vernon would react as they really do love Dudley, shown by how much they spoil him. In this scenario, I decided that Petunia’s hatred of magic plus her fear of losing Dudley to magic (just like she lost her sister) would drive her to hit Dudley.
5. The first signs of Harry’s sneaky Slytherin side! He reads the room and chooses the best manner to approach the situation, something he would be good at considering he grew up in an abusive household. He would likely have gotten very good at reading moods and acting accordingly at a young age to avoid being hit or yelled at.
6. It might seem like Harry is a little quick to believe in Hogwarts and want to go considering he knows nothing about it. But, it’s an escape from the Dursleys and the terrible school they were going to send him to. Plus, it’s obvious that the Dursleys hate magic, so why would they lie to Harry about him being a wizard?
7. I know in canon Hogwarts is free, but that simply doesn’t make sense to me. In my world, Hogwarts is the best and most elite school in Britain, but it’s not the only one. There are also smaller ‘public’ wizarding schools that people who can’t afford Hogwarts go to. Also, if Hogwarts has a tuition then it only makes sense to me that the Potter Parents would set up an education fund for Harry, especially since their lives were at risk, they would want to make sure that Harry would be able to get the best education possible.
8. Some more Slytherin sneakiness, Harry isn’t a master manipulator by any means but he’s lived with the Dursleys for 11 years, he knows how to play them.
9. I don’t write it in bc it seemed unnecessary, but she does explain her reasoning off-screen.
10. Some foreshadowing here, I thought I was rather clever, finding a logical way for Harry and Vernon to learn how to enter the train platform.
11. This whole paragraph is my attempt at showing how Harry is still just a kid who’s curious about the new world he’s found himself in. I know I write Harry (and all the characters his age) as being a little more mature than they probably would be in reality, so here I was trying to show a pure, childlike curiosity and also some trains of thought that aren’t totally logical bc he is a kid.
12. I do think the Dursleys, or Vernon at least, is more clever than he gets credit for, he is high up in Grunnings, so he has to have some sort of head on his shoulders, and he’s certainly self-serving we saw in book 2 how he lathered up those rich people he wanted to impress. So, I think as much as Vernon might hate magic and think goblins are disgusting, that he would very much be able to put that aside if he thought it might benefit him.
13. The goblins ‘revealing the truth’ to Harry, or giving him or helping him out in some way is kinda over done and doesn’t always make sense as the goblins really have no reason so want to go out of their way to help Harry. But, I needed an unbiased 3rd party to teach Harry a little about the wizarding world and I figured a satisfactory motivation for the goblins would be making money in the form of consultation fees.
14. The first hints of Dumbledore’s manipulations. He wants a naïve Savior who will be easy for him to influence and shape into the person he thinks the world needs. Note, I’m not going for an evil Dumbledore, just a morally grey Dumbledore.
15. Paper business refers to the practice of owning a business on paper but not being involved in how it’s currently ran, I’m not trying to say that the Potters own several companies that sell paper. I don’t know if this is a common term, when I googled it nothing came up, but my dad uses it a lot when talking about businesses. Also, we know in canon that the Potters are rich but in a lot of fics it has evolved into them being extremely wealthy and influential. I’m running with this fanon idea because the Potters are a very old family, they’ve been around since the 12thcentury and married into other very influential families in canon. Also, if I ever get to the later years I do want to mess around with some politics and Harry having power from his family name will be a necessary advantage.
16. I’m not going to bore you guys with paragraphs detailing just how exceedingly rich Harry is, if he can’t even do anything with what he owns yet. He’s 11, he’s not going to be making any smart investments.
17. Like I said earlier with the tuition vault, the Potters were soldiers in a war, they knew they might die and I think it’s only logical that they would take precautions to ensure that Harry would have a comfortable life should they die.
18. This might seem like a lot, but again, the Potters are rich and they want their only child to be able to have a comfortable life even if they die, plus it is supposed to last until Harry’s an adult.
19. This is not canon, JKR said that a galleon is approx. 5 British pounds. I think that’s too low, so I changed it. I mean, it’s solid gold and the highest form of currency it’s got to be worth more than that.
20. Trying to give Dumbledore the benefit of the doubt, but of course Vernon is going to be suspicious of anyone who took money that he could have used.
21. This is just something that I thought made sense, Gringotts has been established as being in the business of making money and how can they do that if they’re cut off from part of their clientele?
22. I’m trying to go in a new direction with the Dursleys, I’m not trying to redeem them, but like Dumbledore, they’re in a grey area, especially Vernon. I think a self-serving Vernon would be interested in learning more about the magic world, or more specifically learning what it can do for him. But also because you need to know your enemy, as interested as he might be in profiting off magic, Vernon doesn’t trust wizards. As for Harry, this is a Slytherin AU, of course he’s going to play along with his uncle’s plan as long as it benefits him.
23. This is another line from the book
24. Hints that Dean is actually a halfblood and not muggleborn, this is canon too. I’m looking forward to exploring the future “tracking down who my real dad was arc”
25. Originally, I had Harry meet Hermione and her family, but I decided to change it to Dean because I wanted to go down some different avenues. A lot of Slytherin Harry stories have Harry becoming friends with Hermione early on despite their differences and I didn’t want to just do the same thing as everyone else. Also, I really like Dean Thomas’s character he’s a friendly, good natured, brave and loyal. I also think that Harry would get along better with Dean right off the bat than he would with Hermione.
26. Honestly, I think it’s ridiculous that they still use quills and I will be using the trope where Harry sneaks in ballpoint pens.
27. Harry came to Diagon a few days earlier than he did in canon, so I figure it only makes sense that he would meet someone different at Madam Malkins also this gave me a great opportunity to shoe in one of my other favorite characters, Neville.
28. I headcanon that Harry and Neville have a slight magical bond over both being possible options for the prophecy.
29. I admit this is slightly unrealistic, as I’ve dropped my glasses several times before and they’ve never broken but I wanted an excuse to get Harry some new glasses.
30. Not implausible, but also not likely either. Also, I admit I really have no clue about British healthcare, especially not what it was like in the 80s and 90s. I know it’s free, but that there’s also the option to do private or paid care. So, for this story, assume that the Dursleys use private care bc they want to seem better than everyone else.
31. Again, probably not the most realistic scenario, but it is possible. I got glasses when I was 11 and contacts when I was 15, but I definitely could have gotten the contacts when I was a little younger. Maybe not, 11-years old younger, but I don’t think it’s entirely out of the ballpark.
32. I didn’t see any point in changing Hedwig’s name, so I kept it the same.
33. Giving Harry contacts was something that I debated a lot, there’s no real reason he needs them, I just wanted him to have some because they’re convenient. I personally regret not getting contacts earlier.
34. To be honest, this is actually a bit of a cop out on my end because I haven’t figured out the entire political system yet. BUT even if I had, Harry is still 11 so he probably wouldn’t understand it that well anyways. There will be a brief explanation in chapter 2 though.
35. Dudley’s reaction is anything thing I was really torn up about. Because he’s essentially torn between his two parents, sticking with Petunia ostracizes him from Vernon and sticking with Vernon ostracizes him from Petunia. Ultimately, I decided Dudley would value his father’s attention more because while Petunia wouldn’t like him getting involved with magic, she wouldn’t cut Dudley off completely, she loves him too much. But Vernon, has been completely distracted by magic and without Dudley getting involved in it too then he won’t get any attention from his father.
36. According to the HP wiki, Dean’s family actually lives in London, but I wanted it to be more convenient for them to meet so I moved them closer to the Dursleys. Also, I actually did about an hour’s worth of research on google maps trying to find a real place Dean’s family to live.
37. A whole lot of this section with the Weasleys was lifted from the book with slightly different commentary from Harry. I originally had more, but it didn’t add anything so I cut it out.
38. I don’t know how outgoing Ron was before he met Harry, if I was him though I would be too nervous to intrude on a compartment with two other kids who looked like they were already friends.
39. This is not a Ron bashing fic, Harry has no reason to dislike him, so of course he wouldn’t be opposed to sitting with him. That said, for the premise of the story I couldn’t have them sit together because Ron is heavily biased against Slytherin.
40. Poor Draco, if he had just paid more attention to who he was passing in the hall then he would have met Harry, but again, I couldn’t let that happen because Draco’s so obnoxious that he’d turn Harry off Slytherin.
41. Honestly, I just wanted Harry to interact with more students who can be potential friends.
42. Again, and the sorting is lifted from the book. I’m not going to make note of every line.
43. I wasn’t sure if I wanted Neville to be in Hufflepuff of Gryffindor at first. A lot of people argue that Neville needed to be in Gryffindor to learn how to be brave, but I think that Hufflepuff would provide a strong support system that would help Neville gain confidence in himself. Also, I decided that Harry’s words in the robe shop would influence Neville into not thinking that he was a loser if he went to Hufflepuff. I imagine in canon, much like Harry was chanting “not slytherin” Neville was probably chanting “not Hufflepuff”. So I think it’s fitting they both don’t end up in Gryffindor in this fic. Also, Harry already has a Gryffindor friend in Dean, he can use a Hufflepuff friend.

The 5 most relevant trends in the development of mobile apps in 2020
There's no question about it, with a projection of 3.5 billion smartphone users in 2020, companies will be targeting the mobile app development market as it is one of the fastest growing areas in technological advancement.
Not only do smartphones offer easy and painless customer experiences, they are convenient and sell very well, meaning that the majority of the world's population will have one. As more companies shift to mobile devices, new trends appear. Here's what to expect in 2020.
1. 5G wireless internet will have a major impact:
With 5G wireless service at the cusp of deployment, we will see network speeds skyrocket to 100 times faster than we are used to in current 4G networks. This will have a significant and positive impact in numerous areas, including traffic capacity, connection density, latency, network efficiency, all of which will increase consumer experiences online. 5G will bring with it better data security, 3D games, and more augmented reality / virtual reality applications.
2. Instant apps are on the rise:
Enter the Google Play Store on your smartphone and take a look at the application categories. One of those categories will be "instant applications", which are native applications that you can immediately try without having to install them on your device. Unlike native apps that need to be fully downloaded, you can get instant access to any app from the Instant App category.
How does this work? The developers will divide the application into a small, executable part, which you can use within seconds after tapping it. However, if you want the full experience, you may need to download the app entirely. They are a great way to test an app because they are small in size, provide a great user experience, and don't take up the user's mobile space. Yes, they will also come to iOS.
3.Both augmented reality and virtual reality will continue to transform:
In recent years, we've seen Dino Trek, Pokémon Go, and Wizard's Unite, all of which are augmented reality mobile gaming apps that provide consumers with a mix of games with real-world environments. We have also seen this happen with virtual reality headsets and games like Beat Saber and Alyx, the new Half-Life game. Given that these technologies have worked successfully in the gaming market, it is projected that we will see AR reaching the marketing and advertising, healthcare and manufacturing sectors very soon as well.
4. The use of mobile wallets will increase:
While most people tend to use online banking and e-commerce or use their cards on the checkout line, there has been tremendous growth in the number of available online payment options.
Larger tech companies like Samsung are looking to enter the market by improving the scanning and payment techniques used with mobile wallet transactions. Apple, on the other hand, is working on a peer-to-peer payment system, which will make sending money to friends and family much easier.
5. We will see more IoT in mobile applications:
While the Internet of Things (IoT) has smart cities and smart homes, it also lends itself to mobile app development. The total number of IoT-enabled devices is estimated to hit the market of 20 billion in 2020, making mobile remote control applications more prevalent in the market. More people will adopt these types of applications to control non-IT equipment such as lights, blinds, and home temperature systems.
The development of mobile applications can be of great help for any company, since it centralizes access to a platform. At Let's Nurture, we help mobilize your internal communication, streamlining operations and the process by providing instant information to users. We provide best-in-class mobile app development services to attract customers, which in turn helps attract more customers and speed up the sales process.

The Top 5 Mobile App Development Trends Coming in 2020
Tumblr media
There is no doubt about it, with a projected 3.5 billion smartphone users in 2020, companies are going to cater to the mobile app development market as it is one of the fastest-growing areas in technology advancement. Not only do smartphones offer easy and painless customer experiences, but they are convenient and sell extremely well, meaning that the majority of the world’s population will have one. As more businesses shift towards mobile, new trends are appearing. Here is what to expect to come in 2020.
5G Wireless Internet Will Have a Major Impact: With 5G wireless on the cusp of deployment, we are going to see network speeds skyrocket to 100 times faster than what we are used to on current 4G networks. Unlike native applications that need to be downloaded in full, you can instantly get access to any apps under the Instant App category. How does this work? Developers will partition the application into a small, runnable part, that you can use within seconds of tapping on it. If you want the full experience though, you may have to download the app fully. They are a great way to try out an app because they are small in size, provide excellent user experience, and do not take up the user’s mobile space. Yes, they are coming to IOS as well.
Both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Will Continue to Transform: Over the past couple of years, we have seen the likes of Dino Trek, Pokémon Go, and Wizard’s Unite, all of which are augmented reality mobile gaming applications that provide consumers with a unique take on blending gaming with real-world surroundings. In-house development vs. building offshore teams: Which is more suitable for your business?
Tumblr media
Today's software companies invest a huge amount of time, effort, and capital into staying at the very top of their game. As the industry becomes more saturated, there's no choice but to try and stand out from the crowd with powerful, innovative, and relevant software solutions.
But it's far from easy. The competition for recruiting talent is fierce and most companies are left with less-skilled (or less motivated) developers than they'd hoped for. The result? Lower-quality output and less reliable development.
But it's 2019 - the rat race for local talent is no longer the only option. More and more businesses are turning to offshoring; to building dedicated teams of elite software developers in another country, which are still fully integrate into the business.
It's fast-becoming the most cost-effective, practical, and sustainable solution for the industry.
We intend this blog as a useful, proactive comparison of both in-house development and offshore teams. Specifically, we'll analyse how each stacks up against three crucial factors: cost, talent, and getting the job done.
First things first: how much does it cost?
Software engineers are one of the most highly-paid workforce in the world today. It's no shock, then, that the decision to go offshore is largely driven by cost.
Staying local
Especially in the US and Western Europe, hiring local talent means significant outlays. If you want the best talent, you need to pay an absolute premium. And salary is only one aspect: there's the whole recruitment process (and their generous fees), the office space and equipment, plus employee-centric extras like health insurance, flexible working, and plenty others.
When building a full in-house team including senior developers, the numbers can be intimidating. The upside is that if you've been around the block, you can be pretty sure you know what you're getting for your money.
Tumblr media
Going offshore
Things are a bit different if you take the offshore route. For a start, the cost of living in countries like India and Ukraine is significantly lower than the west. This correlates with salary, and so it's much cheaper to hire equivalent labour through offshoring than in your local area.
Note we're talking about equivalent engineers who happen to live in India, not half-trained programmers with no real experience. Cities like Bangalore offer thriving and talented IT communities. Software development education there is highly desired, sitting comfortably in the same bracket as lawyers, doctors, and dentists. So when you engage with the right offshore partner, you can always find developers who meet, or exceed, your requirements - all at a much lower cost.
And all those related expenses, like healthcare, recruitment, and office spaces? Drops in the ocean compared to European or American prices.
So what's the catch? Why isn't everyone in the world offshoring to India and reaping the rewards? Perception.
When you're recruiting at home, you know exactly what you're getting; if you've never built an offshore development team, you might think the operational cost of poor work or low reliability might outweigh your financial savings.
So let's investigate.
Tumblr media
Accessing talented and forward-thinking engineers
When you're hiring new recruits into the business, it's usually because you're scaling up. Not much, maybe, but enough to require some extra internal capacity.
And if you're a software business looking to take on well-trained, hardworking developers at any level, then you're in for a rough road! As it turns out, the recruitment process itself is one strong reason companies are beginning to look offshore. Here's why.
Scarcity and cost of local recruitment
We've already looked at how expensive salaries can be for western companies. Unfortunately, that's not the only cost of building out your team. Recruiter fees average between 20 to 35% of your new employees annual salary, if not more!
The real problem (and part of why recruiters are charging so much) is the scarcity of local talent. Even in major cities like Paris, there tends to be a deficit of quality software engineers available at an affordable cost. Paying full-time employees $60-100 per hour is far above the resources of most companies, but that's what it's starting to take.
And there's another side to this coin: if you can't afford the really good engineers, then what can you afford?
The power is totally in the hands of the engineers themselves. They're a scarce commodity and they can pick and choose their employers. If you're not offering the most exciting work, or the most lucrative contract, then why should they pick your company? More likely you'll have to dig deeper into the roster of engineers, paying significant sums for average developers.
A way to escape the scarcity and sky-high pricing?
The abundance of extremely well-trained developers in India is astonishing. India produces over 1.5 million new engineers every single year, and they flock to technological hubs like Bangalore.
And they speak English with totl fluency, too. Language barriers with Indian developers inevitably stem from companies who - as opposed to investing in a world-class development centre - are paying freelancers pennies for low-quality work. It's just one of several myths about offshoring that, in reality, doesn't carry any weight.
When you're working with the pros, it's a different story.
Both software engineering and English language teaching are prized by the Indian education system. The result isn't a blitz of introverted tech wizards lacking people skills; it's well-balanced, proactive engineers who can take command of their projects and assimilate perfectly into teams of westerners. That leads us on to our final point...
Tumblr media
Can cross-continent teams really work?
This is what it comes down to. On a day-to-day basis, can my business actually thrive with half my developers working thousands of miles away in a different time zone?
Absolutely.
Let's start with the obvious: working with an in-house team is definitely easier. Everyone's within shouting distance and you all work similar hours. In an ideal world, it's what every business would keep on doing.
But in an ideal world, it would also be cheaper and easier to employ people in Western Europe and the US! Since we've established that's not the case, it's important to nail down exactly what gives offshoring its legs on a day-to-day basis.
"But what if they don't work properly?"
It's a valid concern that, unsupervised, any group of new employees might not put 100% into the job. But this assumption forgets a crucial tenet of offshoring: they are a fully integrated extension of your in-house team. Including management which reports directly to you.
It's your work culture, your ethos, and your rules which all these new employees play by. Offshoring isn't like outsourcing, where you pay freelancers to complete minor tasks. We're talking about full-time, well-compensated professionals who are passionate abouttheir work. If it works at home, it will work offshore.
Tumblr media
How to make remote teams function well day-to-day
We've covered this in detail with a specific blog post - 8 modern strategies to make offshore teams work in 2019 - but we'll run over the essentials here. First job? Implement good communication and task-scheduling tools, if you're not already using them.
If you're all sharing one office, you can almost getting away with ignoring modern work tools like Slack, Asana, or Skype. We don't recommend it, but it does happen with smaller teams. When you build your offshore team, there's no room for that gung-ho attitude. You need structure, and you need it yesterday.
From instant messaging and video calls to task scheduling, there's a lot of simple processes you can put in place which massively streamline, well, everything you do. Your offshore team is hand-picked by you; they're not idiots. Share the right tools and explain how your team uses them, and everything will come together nice and smoothly.
It's also good to emphasise a culture of "if you're not sure, ask"; it helps overcome a lot of hurdles early on. Pro tip!
And that's it really. If business is steady and your team's all happy, and you don't have any plans to scale up anytime soon, then you absolutely don't need to invest in an offshore team. However, if growth is on your mind (or if you simply can't fill the empty capacity in your office) then extending your team to India might be a rewarding and lucrative option.
If you're thinking about it, one of our senior executives would be happy to answer any of your questions. Hit the button below to schedule a free call. We can't wait to hear from you.

Building Augmented Reality Apps: Types, SDKs and the Best Tools Available
Though implementation of Augmented Reality technology can be seen in popular AR games such as Pokémon Go, Beat Saber (VR), Wizards Unite, and Minecraft Earth, it is rapidly expanding beyond mobile gaming to other industries too. According to Digi-Capital, the virtual reality and augmented reality market is expected to reach $108 billion by next year and stands to enter into the education, healthcare, and eCommerce markets. This is why you are seeing large companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple investing heavily into the development of augmented reality applications and the technology (SDKs) that power them.
As an ISO Certified AR App Development Company in Australia, Let’s Nurture has developed a number of AR applications from small to large organisations. We have delivered many projects throughout Australia including Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat in Victoria with full guarantee for the quality of our AR apps.
If you are interested in this technology and want to create an augmented reality application to boost-up your business in Australia, you will need to understand the two types of AR, how these apps are developed with SDKs, and which software tools are the best on the market for AR mobile app creation.
What Are The Different Types of Augmented Reality Apps?
There are only two types of Augmented Reality Applications, one which is marker-based and the other which is location-based. Knowing which one you are going to build is critical, as the development kit you use to build it will be decidedly for one of these augmented reality types.
A marker-based augmented reality application for mobile devices is based on image recognition. The camera within the smartphone or tablet is used to detect specific markers or patterns such as images or codes (think QR for example). When the pattern is picked up and recognized, the application will overlay the digital information onto this marker. The position of the marker determines how the augmented reality object is oriented. An example of this would be using augmented reality to showcase how a tattoo is going to look on someone’s arm or leg, as the digital information of the tattoo can be overlaid on top of the marker and presented in a specific orientation.
A location-based augmented reality application does not use markers at all. Instead, a position detector, such as a GPS, accelerometer, or digital compass, will be used to establish one’s location and create an augmented reality object within that location. This is what the Pokémon Go AR mobile game uses.
How Do You Choose the Right Development Kit?
There are plenty of augmented reality development kits for both marker-based and location-based mobile applications, so the choice comes down to the kit that is going to best suit the functionality of your application. To determine which one is appropriate, there is a set of criteria that you should pay attention to when selecting the SDK.
Take a look at the type of licensing available. Many augmented reality developmental kits will offer free and commercial licenses; however, free licenses are often very limited in their feature sets. If you want to build a feature-rich mobile application, it is better to go with a commercial license. Now, there is open-source augmented reality software kits available, which are good for developers who want to add in functions and contribute to the source.
Make sure to look at which platform the augmented reality SDK works with. The majority of kits will work with both Android and IOS devices as these are the most widely used mobile operating systems. But if you want to create an application for Windows mobile devices or computers, you will need to specifically look for a kit that is compatible with the Universal Windows Platform (UWP). There are also some platforms available for macOS, but you will need to specifically look for these.
Consider smart glasses support. While almost all AR mobile applications function through smartphones and sometimes tablets, AR objects may be overlaid right into the real world with smart glasses in the future. The reason for this is because smart glasses provide a hands-free experience, which may become more popular as more smart glasses are built and accepted into the mainstream. Having a development kit that works with smart glasses is a good consideration to make.
Consider having Unity support: While this is one of the most advanced game engines in the world, used to create video games for computers and console systems, it can also power augmented reality applications. If you want your augmented reality application to have fantastic graphics, having Unity support is an excellent idea. Keep in mind though that Unity is a resource-intensive engine, so make sure that your SDK is compatible with it.
Lots of markers mean cloud recognition: If your mobile application is going to be capable of recognizing numerous markers, the development kit that you choose should have cloud recognition as a feature. Why? The markers would be stored in the cloud so that your mobile application doesn’t take up that much space on mobile devices. Keep in mind that the more markers your application can recognize, the more advanced your augmented reality experience will be for users.
What about local recognition? If you are making a small augmented reality application, you can use a development kit that has on-device (or local) recognition. The markers that the application uses will be stored on their mobile device, which means that the user does not have to go online to use the application.
Expand opportunity with 3D tracking. Almost all top augmented reality applications support 3D image tracking, as this allows these applications to recognize 3D objects in the real world such as boxes, toys, and more. This expands what your augmented application can be used for, such as eCommerce or mobile games.
Geo-location is required for location-based AR. If you are planning on making a location-based augmented reality application, and you want to add in virtual points of interest for real physical places in the world, then you will need geo-location support. This is what will allow restaurants, cafes, and landmarks to show up in your mobile application (think Pokémon Go).
You may need a kit with SLAM. This acronym stands for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, which allows applications to map out their environment, track their own movements, and remember the position of items in a room. This is important for augmented reality applications that require virtual objects to stay in one place while the user moves around them. SLAM works with indoor navigation, unlike GPS, giving it huge potential for re-creating indoor environments and maps.
What Are The Best Tools for Building AR Apps?
Now that you know what to look out for in a development kit, you may be wondering which tools are the best for building augmented reality applications. Please see the list below for the best eight currently available!
Vuforia. The Vuforia platform is one of the best for building augmented reality applications as it offers up a ton of features that other platforms do not. 1.1 It comes with over 100,000 words of the English language and therefore has text recognition. You can add in your own custom vocabulary to it though. 1.2 It can recognize both 2D and 3D objects. 1.3 It has the ability to playback videos when targeted surfaces are clicked on or detected. 1.4 It comes with built-in encoding for data and comes with its own barcodes that can act as their own markers. 1.5 It has local or on-device recognition. But it also has cloud recognition too. 1.6 It comes with built-in virtual buttons which expands the surfaces you can use within the application via your touch screen.
Kudan: This SDK is available for IOS and Android augmented reality development and comes with Unity support. It is able to recognize both 2D and 3D images, has a low memory footprint due to its high-performance engine KudanCV, and it supports SLAM for mapping out indoor environments. The free licensing comes with watermarks, but there are several commercial licenses to choose from as well.
EasyAR: The free version of EasyAR comes with unlimited recognition queries and cloud recognition, but it can also store up to 1,000 markers for augmented reality applications that use local recognition. If you want SLAM, 3D tracking, or on-screen recording though, you will need to purchase a paid license.
Wikitude: Whether you want to build a location-based or marker-based augmented reality application, Wikitude works for both. It provides developers with geolocation support for location-based services within augmented reality applications, has cloud recognition and on-device recognition available, and has extended tracking of virtual objects. This means that when the camera of your smartphone loses a marker, the marker will be tracked regardless. Wikitude also comes with instant tracking for displaying virtual items that do not have markers or for mapping out indoor environments with SLAM. This SDK has a free trial, but commercial licenses are what you will need to buy. It works with other development frameworks, like Cordova and Xamarin, which is a bonus.
Xzimg: The Xzimg is more of a toolset than it is a development package. They have three augmented reality products, one which is a facial tracking technology that is powered by Unity (Xzimg Augmented Face), one which recognizes black-and-white markers and images (Xzimg Augmented Vision), and another which provides solutions for face replacement and makeup-based augmented reality applications (Xzimg Magic Face). These tools can be used with Android, IOS, Windows, Flash, and HTML
ARToolKit: This is an open-source augmented reality SDK which can run on Android, IOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux and is free to use. It allows you to tailor the source code to your liking and has integration with GPS and compasses for location-based augmented reality development. It supports both single and dual camera devices, has automatic camera calibration utilities, and can simultaneously track several objects within AR. It also comes with Unity and OpenSceneGraph support but does require time to configure.
Maxst: The Maxst augmented reality development SDK comes with a free version that has watermarks or a commercial license option and has two tools available. The first is Maxst AR SDK 2D and the second is Maxst AR SDK 3D, which as the names suggest, one recognizes 2D images only while the second has 3D tracking. As with other SDKs, the 2D option has less features than the 3D one, with features like video augmentation and image recognition. The 3D option from Maxst has access to SLAM, occlusion effects, and a physics engine.
Apple ARKit: The Apple ARKit was developed back in 2017, specifically for the brand new IOS 11 smartphones. This SDK kit gives IOS devices plane detection so that they can detect horizontal surfaces like floors. It also comes with the ability to scan the environment, uses visual-inertial odometry to track the environment, and has lighting estimation for lighting adjustments. The kit only works with IOS smartphones and iPads that utilize A9/A10 chipsets.
It comes with a free license which has limited functionality and includes watermarks, but it also has several commercial licenses available, if you want the full range of features.
The main thing to determine first, before choosing one of the above SDK tools for your augmented reality application, is what type of functionality do you want to be built into your app? Aspects like geolocation, local or on-device recognition, SLAM, and 3D tracking are all imperative features to look at. In order to create a top-notch and exceptional augmented reality application, consider price and licensing as a factor, as all paid SDKS will come with rich features that are future-ready.

A photo of US freelance journalist Carl Goette-Luciak with a Nicaraguan Sandinista that Max Blumenthal misrepresented on his blog Grayzone to grave consequences (Photo: Twitter)
The first in a three part series on the toxic influence of psuedo-journalists in the digital age and the danger they represent to the self-determination of peoples across the globe.
Professional liars, conspiracy theorists and old-fashioned fanatics have existed since the dawn of civilization, but in a digital age where clicks are driven by outrage and sensational headlines, these bad actors find themselves in possession of a megaphone with global reach that has never before been seen in human history. But not all grifters and yellow journalists are created equal. That is to say, in media platforms prone to consolidation and driven by outrage, the most extreme voices have a tendency to dominate the field.
The game of exaggerations, baseless accusations and dictator apologia for cash and clout is becoming increasingly dominated by a small and particularly unhinged group of smear-merchants who boast a cultish group of very-online and very-aggressive followers. These electronic minions of misinformation spread the exaggerations, denials and half-truths they receive from their grifter masters with evangelical zeal, and an apparent imperviousness to facts or reality ¹.
Enter Grayzone, a supposedly leftist crew of “journalists” with opaque financing and Russian support.
This all-caps charge against responsible journalism is led by son of a wealthy Clinton advisor, Max Blumenthal and his zany “never met a Human Rights violation we didn’t like” cohorts at Grayzone ². They receive helping hands from a number of shady media organizations and fringe voices that include Russian disinformation network RT, TeleSur in South America, reknown racists Richard Spencer, Tucker Carlson, a nazi school shooter and even ex-KKK wizard David Duke.
Though they claim to write from the left, their digital fog-machine defies political boundaries, incorporating anti-semetic smears about Soros that have white-supremacist origins, genocide denial tricks pioneered by European fascist parties and the “always discredit or insult rather than respond to fact” tactics of sociopaths like Alex Jones.
Every social movement in the world they dislike is the fault of the CIA, and every government they support, which are unfailingly disturbingly authoritarian, can do no wrong.
These fearless champions of state-violence cheer police forces brutalizing protesters, deny well-documented death squads and rationalize oppression at every turn.
Despite Blumenthal’s attacks on journalists who work for publications funded by Soros, he has had no problem accepting money from that source in the past, such as when he worked for the Nation, whose parent company, TYPE Media Center is funded in part by grants from the man he so often demonizes, nor from his time at “Media Matters” which has also enjoyed Soros funding. Oh, and also AlterNet, who helped him develop Grayzone until 2018, when they fired him, presumably because his conspiracy theory mongering was damaging their reputation.
Nor has he been above accepting gifts from the regimes he writes so flatteringly about. Blumenthal and other writers at Grayzone have also been exposed accepting “journalism prizes” from pro-Assad lobby groups.
What are their motives? That varies from personality to personality, but they all share two traits: an inability to realize the world does not in fact revolve around the United States and the certainty that they know what should happen in countries they don’t live in infinitely better than people who do.
As David Smilde, senior fellow at human rights group WOLA and Professor at Tulane aptly stated, they “instrumentalize the realities of the global South for their own purposes — whether that be personal identity work or political battles they consider important — and it’s a form of colonialism”
It’s American exceptionalism turned on its head — an inability to imagine that people in other countries have the agency to form their own social movements and revolutions without help from the U.S. This worldview leads them to de-legitimize and dismiss protesters in Hong Kong, Iraq, Iran, Nicaragua, Lebanon and Venezuela as illegitimate, and to deny horrific human rights abuses in a score of countries across the globe from Russia to Bolivia.
Grayzone: Defenders of Authoritarians the World Over
I first heard of Max Blumenthal during Grayzone’s 2018–2019 “Latin American Human Rights Violation Denial Tour”. Someone sent me a video of Max Blumenthal in a rich neighborhood of Caracas as “proof” that the thousands of Venezuelan immigrants I saw daily did not, in fact, exist.
“You don’t know what it’s like to work all day only be to able to afford a few tomatoes and some lettuce, to make a little salad. And to wake up to your daughter telling you ‘I’m hungry’, but you have nothing to give her. You can’t imagine the feeling of powerless,” — a Venezuelan immigrant near Cucuta, Colombia in 2018
Tumblr media
A couple catches a nap as we hitched a ride in a truck transporting scrap metal while travelling with the thousands fleeing VZ. Last year, I walked to Bogota from the Venezuelan border with the “caminantes”. Mini-doc of the trip here. (Photo: Joshua Collins)
The issue? The health crisis he was denying wasn’t happening in the luxury neighborhoods he prefers to frequent on his junket-journalism tourist trips, but rather in the barrios and the countryside where the majority of the country works for less money per month than minimum wage workers in the United States make in an hour.
As he crowed sarcastically to the camera, I dismissed him as a confused tourist and kept documenting the 5 million Venezuelans who have fled their collapsed country in the biggest mass-migration in South American history.
I talked daily with people suffering from years of healthcare neglect and insecurity while Max stayed in the capital, assuring everyone that the unfolding humanitarian crisis was nothing more than U.S State Department propaganda (reportedly never leaving the safety of rich Caracas neighborhoods).
“You don’t know what it’s like to work all day only be to able to afford a few tomatoes and some lettuce, to make a little salad. And to wake up to your daughter telling you ‘I’m hungry’, but you have nothing to give her. You can’t imagine the feeling of powerless,” one immigrant told me a few days after Blumenthal’s Potemkin Village video variety show, which included mocking employees at a mall in terrible Spanish — employees who at the time most likely worked for $7 a month. (The monthly minimum wage has since slipped to $3).
But that was just the beginning. I would hear much from the Grayzone crew over the next year, and learn a lot more about their checkered past, a record that has left a chain of victims around the globe for years.
Flipping Sides After a Trip to Russia
youtube
An interview in which Blumenthal laments leftists who would supports Bashar Al-Assad in Syria
Max Blumenthal got his start writing about Syria in 2011, where he was staunchly on the side of rebels against Assad. He spoke passionately of atrocities committed by the Assad regime, even resigning from a Beirut paper in 2012 because he claimed they were “Assad apologists”, who “paid me pathetically, barely enough to pay rent in my New York apartment.”
He even goes so far as to say that some of his colleagues in Syria were so caught up in “Anti-Imperialism” that they found themselves in the warped position of defending Assad, whom he viewed as a murderer.
He was accompanied in this endeavor by his mustachioed Brooklyn hipster side-kick Ben Norton, who, unlike Max, dispensed his Syria expertise via internet from New York.
It’s unclear what qualifications Norton possessed at the time however, other than a willingness to follow Max’s every editorial lead, a bitchin’ one-man noise band, and the sweetest chinstrap in Williamsburg, but he was on board, and he was vehemently anti-Assad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suddenly, in 2015 Max and his pet mustachio flipped sides. It just so happens that they became pro-Assad after attending a Moscow luxury Gala; the same event that got Jill Stein and Trump appointment Michael Flynn (who was paid $40,000 for attending) in hot water. They were new true-believers in the Assad regime, and enthusiastic apologists for the murderous actions they had previously railed against.
Was it a Russian buy-out that changed their views? That’s hard to say. Despite Grayzone’s constant evidence-free attacks on other journalists’ supposed connections to the pentagon and the NED (National Endowment of Democracy, which he claims is an instrument of “regime change”), the funding for Grayzone is completely opaque.
It is unclear how they fly a dozen employees around the world and still manage to rent expensive apartments in New York and Washington D.C.
But suddenly Max had a new girlfriend, Anya Parampil (who joined RT in 2014). He also had a new media sponsor and an “Anti-Imperial” axe to grind. Grayzone coverage immediately became pro-Assad. Parampil would soon be fired from RT and go to work full-time for their shadily financed project as they expanded markets and found new countries to exploit outside of the Middle East.
I’m sure it is completely coincidental that everything Grayzone has published since then has towed exactly with the official propaganda coming from the Kremlin, that he suddenly became obsessed with “Russia hysteria” and that his work is now amplified by RT.
But Syria isn’t my area of expertise. Much has been written on Grayzone’s disaster junket-journalism coverage of the Middle East that includes selfies next to torture sites, promoting conspiracy theories about aid group the White Helmets and denying atrocities committed by Assad. My experience lies more in how they have misrepresented Latin America — which they have done with vigor.
Tumblr media
On Nicaragua, Grayzone and Death Squads
When I first heard of their antics as I worked on the Venezuelan border, Grayzone were recently returned from a trip to Nicaragua. One in which they framed a fiercely violent government oppression of protests that killed hundreds, and injured thousands , as a justified response.
Human rights investigators invited to the country by Nicaraguan president Ortega however, did not agree with those claims. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights stated that the regime had “used lethal weapons against children and students” and had arbitrarily detained hundreds of peaceful protesters who had been subsequently exposed to treatment that amounted to torture, including mass-beatings, death-threats, sexual assault and psychological abuse that included “threats of rape”, witholding food and water, “threatening to kill their relatives” and even threats of “burning them alive”.
Whether the protests were “valid” or not, would become a moot point; Ortega outlawed public protests shortly after crushing them violently.
As these events were occurring, Max Blumenthal and the Grayzone crew were portraying Daniel Ortega as a hero, hyping his baseless assertions that the students weren’t a legitimate protest movement, but rather a CIA front in a series of articles claiming international conspiracy. These claims were as without evidence as those of the government. Their effort culminated in an absolutely exhausting and fawning hour-long interview with the Nicaraguan president, in which Ortega blamed the hundreds of student deaths on everything from “crime” to “car accidents”.
Before Grayzone left Nicaragua, they would attack a number of journalists and protesters who presented accounts that didn’t fit their pre-conceived narrative. They misrepresented a young protester who released a video of police killing her fellow students that went viral. She was later captured by police and forced to record a “confession” obtained under state torture.
Grayzone ran a story on the event, stating the killings at the University were a hoax, a claim Max would repeat in various interviews while in Nicaragua.
The story Max published however, was penned by an author who doesn’t even exist, as exposed in a 2018 report by Charles Davis at the Daily Beast.
It was a breath-taking display of a lack of journalistic ethics on the part of Blumenthal.
Also while in Nicaragua, Max penned a lengthy piece in Mintpress heavily implying, if not stating directly, that Carl David Goette-Luciak, an independent reporter who wrote for NPR and the Guardian, was actually a regime-change plant. In the same piece, he represents a journalist who was killed by government snipers while livestreaming, as being killed by protesters.
His claims were accompanied with a photo of Luciak beside an armed soldier whom Max claimed was opposition. He wasn’t. Luciak was actually posing with a Sandinista — a leftist. The picture was taken as part of a pro-bono project with Azucena Castillo, a Nicaraguan journalist currently in exile for her work at independent media organization Radio de la Ciudadania. It’s unclear if Max was simply making up the accusation or fooled by government claims. Either way it’s a lie that led to grave consequences.
Tumblr media
An image that circulated on social media following Max’s lie. The photo is accompanied with a caption that falsely claims Luciak was posing with a “A leader of the MRS party”. He wasn’t
These false claims led to thousands of people publishing Goette-Luciak’s address as well as death threats that forced him into hiding. Eventually Luciak was captured by State forces, threatened with torture and charged with disseminating “fake news” by the Nicaraguan government before being deported from the country.
Defending the use of live ammunition against Nicaraguan citizens, mass-detainment and State-sponsored torture wasn’t enough however, they had to shift the onus of blame onto the people being massacred. You see, in the bizarro Grayzone worldview, oppressive and murderous police forces are actually champions of the people. When they kill hundreds of protesters, it is always justified.
The Grayzone tactics of cheer-leading state violence, smearing and attacking critics with distortions that put their lives in danger, misrepresenting protesters as hapless, violent pawns of foreign powers and obfuscating facts on the ground have become the trademarked tactics of this crew as they tour the world in search of social media “likes”.
These breaches of journalism ethics, white-washing human rights violations and editorializing breaking news against protesters have very dangerous real-world effects.
And as they champion these attacks on the liberty of people in countries they don’t live in, they damage the credibility of brave protesters and journalists putting their lives on the line who do.
Max Blumenthal said something back when he opposed war crimes in 2013 that resonated with me.
“People have a right to rise up against oppression”
I agree. It’s a shame he seems to now stand for the opposite.

The Last Machine: The Culture
The setting is summarized HERE.
An overview of the Chimera Plague and its impact is located HERE.
Find a breakdown of the population demographics HERE.
The magic system is briefly explained HERE.
Common technology and industries are explained HERE.
Between the effects of the Chimera Plague, the loss of widespread communication infrastructure, the discovery and spread of magic, and the chaos involved in the formation of each community of survivors, there’s a lot about Lost Eagle Country and the people living in it that really stands out in comparison to The World That Was, when there are records available to compare things to.
Arts and Entertainment: Music plays a considerable role in every community when it comes to creative expression and art, followed by theatrics in the form of plays. Live entertainment is the norm. Most towns have a library of some sort where knowledge is preserved, but actual appreciation for contemporary literature is hard to find outside of Postville. Both Postville and Arcadia have museums dedicated to art and artifacts, but again, these are mostly used to preserve whatever can be saved from The World That Was, rather than providing reflections of modern sensibilities. Creative types are pushing to change this, but it’s too soon to tell if they will succeed.
Crime and Law: It’s impossible to get a bunch of people together in the same place and not end up with fights, arguments, theft and even murder. Different communities tend to form their own taboos, legal restrictions, and punitive measures; for example, the greatest punishment in the Dwarven Freeholds is exile, being completely cut off from all other Dwarves and their support, while for other communities the most serious response to criminal action is death. Out of necessity, these are reserved only for the most heinous of crimes, but again, different communities have different ideas about how heinous a given act is. The legal system has been simplified by all towns and settlements agreeing on a handful of common rights for inhabitants and visitors alike, such as the right to autonomy, right to security, and right of expression, but beyond that things get complicated very fast.
Economics: Lost Eagle Country relies on precious metals to mint their currency; specifically, an aluminum wafer called the Tab. Originally the actual trading post that stood where Postville eventually grew would use the tabs from aluminum beer and soda cans as markers, and would accept payment for debts in the form of various metals, including aluminum. The technology needed to create new aluminum metal from raw ore is incredibly complex and energy intensive, and the metal itself is both lightweight and resistant to corrosion, making it very useful as a medium of exchange in 2125. These coins are minted in the Lost Eagle Mint at Postville, and banks do exist in Postville, Romero, Arcadia and Elsie, but Millstone and the Dwarven Freeholds refuse to establish any sort of bank for ideological reasons.
Education: Every major town has at least one school. Not every town has the same lessons. Dwarven math and science leans towards engineering and geology, while in Millstone the scientific focus is based on biology and the weather. These schools also include information that is out of date or just completely made up, especially regarding the other communities of Lost Eagle Country and the people who live in them. Postville being the accidental melting pot that it is, it’s education is mostly free of such errors. Mostly.
Fashion: The first rule of clothing in Lost Eagle Country is that it lasts as long as possible. Hand in hand with that is that it has to be tough and durable. The second rule of clothing is that more pockets are better. Beyond those two foundations, fashions and styles are actually in a considerable amount of flux in 2125. Short sleeves and high ankle cuffs are currently popular in Arcadia, while long sleeves are the rage in Elsie. High collared vests are popular in Millstone, while Dwarves visiting from the Freeholds have low collars, or none at all. Wearing suspenders in Elsie will get you laughed at, wearing suspenders in Romero will get you whistles, especially if you can pull it off. Decorative buttons are suddenly incredibly popular with the youth, probably because the “useless” ornamentation drives the parents to distraction. It’s an absolute free-for-all, especially in Postville, so much so that no type of clothing or way of wearing it is particularly unusual or worth remarking on.
Government: In theory, Postville is the capital of Lost Eagle Country. It has the highest population, the most flexible industry, and the most money. In practice, Lost Eagle Country is less of a state than an alliance of city-states banding together for mutual advantage. As a result, the elected officials of Postville just make policies for Postville. This has done more to slow down any sort of mobilization of a defending army to fight the Invader than any other factor, as different communities balk at sending their own to die to protect the other communities. There is no “national” ideal or symbol that everyone has agreed to unite behind. For the most part, government itself exists at the town hall level, with city officials elected by some sort of secret ballot (and the occasional scandalous not-so-secret or rigged ballot) and topics tend to be debated loudly and extensively at public meetings.
Healthcare: The largest and most sophisticated hospitals can be found in Postville and Arcadia, where both the population and the technological sophistication are high enough to justify their presence. Clinics and individual doctor’s offices can be found most anywhere else. Treatment varies according to the specific nature of the ailment or injury, but a mixture of technological medicine and healing magic is common. Following an “incident” in 2031, no businesses or organizations comparable to health insurance companies exist in Lost Eagle Country, but there are organizations known as “Health Co-operatives” that ostensibly fill similar roles.
Military: Strictly speaking, Lost Eagle Country does not have a professional military. Which is unfortunate, because they need one to deal with the Invader, and they need it yesterday. Elsie has a lot of airships, ultralights and gliders, and Romero has a number of armed ships, but neither one is exactly a professional air force or navy. However, Postville does happen to be the home of several organizations that could bend their talents in a Martial direction, especially the Wizard’s Cooperative. While they wouldn’t be able to raise a very large standing army, or even a small one very fast, these organizations lend themselves easily to the creation of small units of high power and high mobility. Rather than trying to take and hold territory, these units would apply their particular expertise (magic, chemistry, explosives, hunting, theft, psychological warfare, and so on) to making the Invader’s forces regret their life choices. It remains to be seen if this strategy can be pulled off, and if it will be enough.
Prejudice: In theory, the ability of the Chimera Virus to randomize people’s DNA should have eliminated racism, sexism, and a few more isms, and finishing off the anti-vaccination movement as a grand finale. After all, why would anybody deliberately follow any sort of ideology that gave a certain category of people the short end of the stick, when there was a significant chance of waking up one morning in that category, getting that end of the stick? In practice, the various quarantine procedures reinforced the age old dichotomy of “Us Versus Them” and there’s only so much that mutual economic survival can do against that kind of mentality, especially among the older folks. In Postville, and more generally speaking in Lost Eagle Country as a whole, no single chimeric genotype really has a majority outside of its home town or original quarantine zone; even the population that has the highest percentage is still vastly outnumbered by the other five. Practical necessities of survival being what they are, gender roles are not particularly rigid outside of the Dwarven Freeholds, and even then the Dwarves that don’t live in the Freeholds themselves are more likely to pay lip service to those ideas, if any.
Religion and Faith: Almost no organized religion survived unchanged from The World That Was, and that can be more or less laid entirely at the feet of the discovery of magic in general and Necromancy in particular. Consequently, there are only three major religions with a significant presence in Lost Eagle Country. The first and most common is Ancestor Worship or Ancestor Communion, which relies on Necromancy to communicate with the spirits of departed family members. The second most common form of religion is Sun Worship, as passed down by the words of St. Carlin, Patron of Entertainers. The third most common religion is Reform Judaism; as it turned out, Sheol or She’ol was the closest that any Abrahamic religion got to accurately describing the afterlife. Postville has temples and shrines representing all three religions, as do Arcadia and Romero. It’s worth noting that the Mother Shrine for most organized Sun Worship is found at the summit of Mt. Humble, and not inside the town of Elsie itself.

The funny thing (and by funny I mean depressing) about depression is that people don’t actually know much about it???
It is such a common word, people use and abuse it all the time but then I say I’m depressed, clinically depressed* even, and I’m still immediately asked ‘but why? you don’t look depressed?’
Have you ever heard someone ask “why do you have diabetes? why are you nearsighted?”
Granted there’s a huge psychological component to depression that is less present in other chronic illnesses, but the whole chemical aspect of depression is often forgotten.
I can only speak about my own experience and by no means wish to make that some kind of absolute truth, but honestly, I shouldn’t be that depressed.
I live a charmed life, I am loved, I have a lovely roof above my head, no job for the moment but both the confidence that it won’t last and the comfort of knowing that I can last until then. As far as privilege goes, I’m white, living in Paris, I have a college degree, free healthcare... Capitalism aside, there is no reason for me to feel like I want to die every now and then. No reason to have gone and had myself committed twice last year, lest I did something irrevocable.
Yet, my brain is a little bitch. Whatever hormone is responsible for being happy (or at least not feeling like shit, a neutral kind of contentment) is not sticking wherever it should be sticking, and I feel numb at best, angry and sad at worst. You can tell I really know my way around neurobiology. Anyway, without the right pills and at the right amount of them, my brain is as good at happiness as my eyes are at seeing far away stuff without the right glasses.
Now, just a little reminder about happy pills, because even those privy to the wonderful world of mental illness get confused about it (myself included), but broadly, it goes:
Antidepressants : help with the happy hormones of the brain, not addictive but as it affects hormonal levels you want to start slow and stop progressively, otherwise the side effects will get you. Always consult with your doc if you want to stop them. Zoloft, Prozac, Effexor, and all the other wizards.
Benzos: help with PaNic ATtaCKS and anxiety. A depression is a crisis, your brain is stuck between fight or flee. Sleep becomes erratic, you get too little or too much of it, never on a schedule. Anxiolytics help with all that, but are highly addictive. Regular use should be short and supervised by your doctor. Valium, Lexomil, and mostly molecules ending in PAM!
Antipsychotics: mood stabilizers. Mostly used for schizophrenia and bipolar disorders but helpful with depression too. A small dose can reinforce the effect of the antidepressant, a stronger does helps with the mood.
Most importantly : DO NOT SELF MEDICATE. This is coming from someone who has seen many health care professionals in the past two years, some good, some less good, and I can tell you it can be a bit of trial and error, which is not what you need or want when ill, but unfortunately, there is no test that I know of that will tell which molecule will work and how much of it is needed. That’s why you’ll see a psychiatrist weekly (at least that’s what’s recommended here) at first, then your meetings will be spaced out as needed (mine are currently 3 months apart, as I’m doing better)
ALSO: the psychiatrist is the one to give you the medicine (they are medical doctors) whereas the psychologist follows you in therapy. Oh, and a psychoanalyst is a terrible person to see during a depressive episode (please come fight me on this, I will kick your ass), but good if you’re just feeling curious and introspective.
Welp, this got away from me, but feel free to tell me where I’m wrong, that’s an open discussion, you know the drill.
*NB: In French I’ll tend to say ‘I have depression’ which cannot (or at least should not) be confused with ‘I’m sad’
