Sqq has a habit of taking in kids but lbh is by far his favourite. A quick learner, good shot, smart, and an incredible cook, lbh latches onto sqq’s heart without fail. Ofc the abyss scene is lbh getting bitten after a horde attacks and he gets separated from Sqq. After the horde ravages the group and their resources, they have to start moving around, making it harder for lbh to find Sqq. After a few years of hunting them down, he finally finds Sqq (who has no idea how he survived getting bitten, and somehow convinces himself that lbh has a twin who wants revenge for the brother Sqq failed to save). They do their whole murder-chicken song and dance, and then happily settle close to the group (but still far enough that no one is woken up by their…nightly activities.)

Yep, I did major in animation in art school!

As for your second question, it’s a little too broad to explain so I’ll try to show my process.

Quick disclaimer -- This is not really a tutorial, I’m still learning how to animate and I struggle a ton with it. This is just how I personally work through my animations. It’s not ideal nor efficient, it’s just how I’m able to get the most work out of the time I have.

Putting this under the cut because I tend to ramble.

First, I roughed out the general main points I wanted to highlight, such SQQ’s fond smiles when LBH wasn’t looking, LBH’s spotlight scenes, the abyss, SQQ mourning, etc. Then I cobbled my storyboard into a quick animatic, but each scenes lasted too long so I had to break it up into smaller scenes, resulting in more animation to be done u__u;;;

Ideally, I wanted to have a solid storyboard before diving into animating, but it actually took more time if I had done that (and I was losing patience from thinking so hard lmao) so what ended up happening was I was making up the storyboard as I animated. It helps that I had a general idea of what was going on in each phrase of the song.

It did end up deviating from my original outline, which was more of an abstract amv to highlight bingqiu’s relationship, rather than a linear summary of the novel. Which is why some scenes were not 100% accurate to the novel and some were also my own artistic interpretations, for example: SQQ crying at the abyss, the sword sticking up directly from the grave, the red sky during the reunion chase, the cloudy sky during the self-destruction...it didn’t occur to me it was the entire novel until people pointed it out. But bingqiu’s entire relationship was the plot so it makes sense!

I played around with colors to see what I liked/what suits the mood of each scene.

They’re small thumbnails and quite crappy but it gets the point across! They were also just for myself to understand, so it didn’t matter how scribbly they are as long as the artist themself understands. I also didn’t stick it either, for example on the bottom left of the abyss, the final scene did not include flames but instead fire sparks. Because I couldn’t bring myself to learn how to animate fire 😂 but also, it made the scene too busy and distracted away from LBH’s fall, which is already pretty small, so sparks felt non-intrusive and atmospheric. I also didn’t want to just mimic the donghua either, so I tried to put my own spin to it.

When making art and animation there a lot of problems that can pop up that you didn’t even realize until it’s blocking your path...so it’s a lot of problem-solving and working your way around it. Although it might not have been what you imagined at first, it can bring you another completely new vision to consider. I scrapped a ton of ideas and thumbnails that I really wanted to include but it simply couldn’t work out, either due to my own limitations or just the way I have the flow of the amv set up. It’s hard to let go but I tell myself I can recycle it for another artwork, or I can just completely let go of it and that’s ok too.

Speaking of scrapping, here are some thumbnail ideas of the self-destruction scene.

This was definitely the scene I struggled with the most, since it was the most emotional scene! But it was a pretty difficult scene to animate that would have taken too much time, so I had to re-board it.

Next is the animation! I’ll try my best to explain my process:

Rough 1st pass: super quick scribbles to try and get the main idea down -- I start off with key poses, breakdowns, and then drawings in between them to smooth it out. I don’t worry too much about getting the forms correctly since I’m focusing more on the acting of the characters.

Rough 2nd pass: add secondary action like hair, clothing, etc and more drawings to smooth it out. It’s too messy for me to consider it a tie-down, if I had time I would go through a third and fourth pass to so it’s more solid. But I was impatient/had no time so I dove straight into lineart.

Lineart: I did both pose-to-pose and straight ahead animation, and added some small inbetweens to smooth it out again. I try to be careful not to fall into the trance of just “tracing” over my roughs since it can flatten the characters, but it still happened anyways. Flipping a ton of times between your drawings is super duper helpful.

Flat Color: Paint bucketed everything. I think I forgot the designs on SQQ’s robes and his cinnabar mole so I did that at this stage too.

Shadow/Light: Animating shadows and light on separate layers, done straight ahead + pose-to-pose combo.

Final Effects: finally the stage I can relax and see animation come to life. Comped everything together and add in special effects like gaussian blurs and mild color correction.

And now one scene is done! Now to repeat this for another 60+ scenes.

Finally when everything is done I drop everything into a video editor, tweak it to the music and it’s finished!

So that’s pretty much how this mv was created -- if it wasn’t for being possessed by the love of bingqiu I don’t know if it was possible for me to have finished at all 😂 I took a lot of breaks in between, but I’ve learned from past mistakes and injuries to balance my health and creating art so I had a lot of fun making it. I definitely was cutting a lot of corners for this project, but I’m still proud of what I made! Definitely satisfied my love for bingqiu 😆 and seeing people are still watching it makes me happy! 🥰 I cried when people told me they could see my love for bingqiu shine through because I really did pour my whole heart and soul into it, even when I thought I was just struggling through it all 😭💖

6. Gongyi Xiao (my boy!!! he has so little screen time but for the time that he did show up, i was rooting for sqq to run away with him lol)

5. Sha Hualing (my favorite evil henchman omg. i love her character design so much. she may not have a lot to do but she’s beautiful and i adore her)

4. Liu Mingyan (she is soooo pretty. every time she’s on screen i’m like wow airplane really knew what he was doing when he created her. plus her hobby is hilarious! she’s living her best life and earning that cash money <3)

3. Liu Qingge (king of comedy over here! he’s such a good guy and super loyal and the powerful war lord of bai zhan but i think the guy’s so hilarious, too! i love his intense hatred of lbh lol. when asked where lbh is, without even hesitating lgq’s like “he’s dead” and then he gets yelled at by nyy and qi qingqi 🤣)

2. Ning Yingying (best girl!!! i literally love her! i know she started out as just a silly girl who’s always accidentally making trouble for those around her and destined to be lbh’s first wife, but i love how she grows out of that shadow and every time she stomps on mf’s foot or gets into a fight for shizun or talks back to lqg and lbh i’m so proud of her!)

1. Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu (yes i’m cheating. but i love these codependent losers. i’m always switching between who’s my favorite character so i’m going to say both of them are. they are a set do not separate ❤️)

Unlike mdzs (which I’ve read 3 times and know scenes by heart) I’ve only read svsss once. I binge read it while the donghua was still airing and I’m slowly re-reading it right now. So it took a second for me to rank my favorite scenes. There were so many I wanted to include!! Like the scene where shen qingqiu kept trying to cover luo binghe with blankets but the man refused to stay hidden. Or the bing-ge vs bing-mei extra. Or the scene where luo binghe “only has enough money for two rooms” and shen qingqiu takes one room for himself and makes lbh share with liu qingge. But anyway, here’s my favorites.

5. The one where Shen Qingqiu gives his life for Luo Binghe after nearly qi deviating (Chapter 43). It took me a long time to root for bingqiu. But after the abyss, and seeing how sqq mourned for lbh, I was slowly starting to see these two in a different light. And when sqq gives his life to save lbh’s, I cried like a baby. That scene of lbh on the ground, surrounded by enemies, cradling his dead shizun in his arms as he cries and begs for forgiveness broke me. I was like that’s it! I don’t care if they’re “not healthy for each other,” I want them to be together! And then I was fully rooting for these two.

4. The scene where Yue Qingyuan reveals his backstory after he nearly dies on Maigu Ridge. This scene is very small but I had to include it. I’m a big fan of tragic irony, so when yqy reveals to sqq that the reason he doesn’t draw his sword is because it draws from his lifespan and it caused him to qi deviate all those years ago and this was the reason he was late to saving him, I was so heartbroken. Because here yqy is, learning the hard way that his impatience was a bad thing, and he’s finally telling his xiao jiu the truth but he is too late and his xiao jiu is gone. There is only sqq. We see this scene from sqq’s point of view and we get to hear the system’s hollow words ring out, congratulating him on his achievements, as a man is dying in his arms. The system’s presence alone reminds us that he is not xiao jiu. I felt so bad for yqy and that he never got closure with xiao jiu and because of that dreaded system, he will never learn that his xiao jiu is actually gone 🥺💔

3. The scene when Luo Binghe proposed to Shen Qingqiu. I have never been more fond of lbh than in this scene where he’s thinking about proposing to sqq and he becomes a total klutz! Spacing out in the middle of a conversation, tripping over thresholds, stuttering over his words. The way he trips and when sqq goes over to help him, he grabs his hand and asks if he’ll marry him. “Will you become family with me?” 😭❤️❤️❤️

2. The scene that takes place after Shen Qingqiu is tortured by the original LBH and looks into the original SQQ’s memories. The quiet moment he shares with Luo Binghe in the bamboo house. This was such a fascinating scene to me. Even though sqq refuses to think about how he feels for lbh, I think this was a moment he realized that he is not as indifferent to lbh as he says he is. He begs the original lbh not to stop hurting him, but to not hurt him while wearing that face. He sees the original sqq make lbh cry and even though it’s just a memory that he cannot touch, sqq tries to wipe lbh’s tears, hold him close, and tell him that he will never hurt him. It was clear as daylight to me that no matter what sqq said he loves lbh so much. And when he wakes up from such horrid visions and the real lbh asks him if he missed him, he nods his head. And lbh is so overwhelmed and kisses his eyelids and “your eyelashes are so long” and “you are the roundworm in my stomach” I literally CANNOT with this scene. How my dumb sqq didn’t realize he was in love astounds me.

1. The scene where Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu talk on Maigu Ridge and afterward. These two… are so bad at talking to each other. And I completely get it! Like, the system’s awful rules aside (preventing sqq from telling lbh why he hurt him in the abyss), there’s this mental image they have of each other that they can’t seem to get rid of. Sqq denying his own feelings and seeing lbh as either the heterosexual protagonist or his disciple who he will make decisions for. Lbh charging forward with his feelings and seeing sqq as both the cold, stoic peak lord he’s afraid of and the one person he loves who showed him kindness. There’s this disconnect. And shortly before the disaster on Maigu Ridge, sqq realizes that things would never have gotten so out of hand if he had just listened to lbh and talked to him. So once these two reach their literal worst point and sqq brings lbh’s consciousness back, they finally talk to each other as the world is collapsing around them. Sqq even returns the jade necklace he had kept hidden from lbh all those years ago. And when sqq is about to sacrifice himself (again) to save the world from xin mo’s destruction, he tries to get lbh to leave so that only one of them has to die. And that’s the thing: It is a good thing, sacrificing yourself so that the one that you love will live. It would’ve been healthier if lbh weren’t so codependent on sqq that he cannot live without him. But these two are always pushing aside each other’s wishes, not listening to what the other one wants. What lbh wants is to stay with sqq. And this time, sqq listens to lbh’s wishes and holds him tight. Afterward, when sqq wakes up in his home, he immediately asks about lbh and searches for him, wanting to follow him. He’s finally letting go of fear and chasing after what he wants, instead of what he feels he needs to do. And idk man. There’s something so nice about how they choose to stay by each other, even though they’ve gone through so much.

In your Monte Cristo AU: I wonder what kind of rumors/gossip LBH comes back to. Like does the public think SQQ is out to romance NYY even though he's not? Did people notice SQQ worrying about/for LBH while he was imprisoned and have their own ideas why? What does the rest of the conspiracy think of SQQ and their interpretations for his behavior?

Ooh good questions. LBH had people on the inside (cough, Shang Qinghua) do some snooping a year or two before he made his superfluous appearance as the count. The news that goes back to him from Shang Qinghua -> MoBei Jun are that:

1. The Huan Hua manor and Wens have greatly profited from using LBH as a scapegoat.2. SQQ, with his acquisition of the merchant ship, has successfully expanded his business and may be collaborating with the huan hua manor in business affairs.3. NYY is now possibly SQQ’s fiance

The thing is, only point 1 (and a bit of point 2) is correct. Shang Qinghua, being the author of the original Proud Immortal Demon Way Monte Cristo AU, assumes that after seeing SQQ and NYY close to one another that they’ve gotten to the courting stage.

SQQ and NYY are close. But for SQQ’s part, it’s mainly to keep other potential suitors away from LBH’s wrath, and also because he’s grown fond of NYY and wants to help her some gain some autonomy! (After all, she is a woman in this 19th century world and SQQ is a millennial!! Womens rights!!!) So the public definitely things that SQQ might have eyes for her, but for SQQ’s part, he just thinks he’s doing the BingYing ship a favor.

As for the business, SQQ has definitely made good investments what was meant to be LBH’s ship. Enough so that he’s started investing in more ships. SQQ’s business dealings are bound to cross paths with huan hua, so he sees those as meant to be throwaway cannon fodder for LBH’s schemes. He definitely keeps himself at a distance from them. Again, faulty assumptions from airplane bro.

SQQ definitely sulked a lot after LBH was falsely imprisoned. NYY and MF did their best to cheer him up, and even YQY and LQG from neighboring manors were worried. SQQ seems especially off when he received news about LBH’s “death” (Which SQQ knows will be the day LBH escapes and starts planning his revenge).

For the most part, everyone knew that SQQ and LBH were close. And LBH’s death must have been devastating to SQQ! He seems super antsy!! But they don’t think too much about aside from a man mourning the loss of a friend. Unlike the original SQQ who conspired with Huan Hua and the Wens to frame LBH, SQQ’s relationship with them is pretty neutral/business oriented?

(I’m vaguely thinking SQQ was meant to send a letter from Wen Ning to WWX, but decided not to. LBH, being the big loyal sap he is did it for, SQQ and returned with a letter from WWX… but that letter was intercepted and caused LBH to be blamed for conspiring with WWX. So now I guess the Wens just kinda assume SQQ is on their side/neutral bc he let LBH get arrested???)

When LBH returns, under the guise of a Count, that’s when people start dropping assumptions about his relationship with SQQ. NYY definitely thinks there’s something going on between them when SQQ speaks nothing but praise about the Count (Because he’s trying to get the s.s.bingying sailing!!!)

I know that the MLs are attached to the MCs due to their kindness to the MLs in their time of need, maybe weird is not the right word, after all it's normal to be like someone that's kind to you. I don't know how to explain how the situation with the MLs is odd so I'll guess I'll start by explaining LBH. NYY and LBH's mother showed him kindness with no ulterior motives. After the abyss, LBH could not maintain a meaningful relationship with others despite it being clear they are attached to him.

Hello! Okay, first of all please don’t apologize for “spamming” bc I’m interested in seeing other perspectives as it makes me delve deeper into the novel more haha 

On the other hand, I’m uncertain how you’re going to quantify “justified extreme devotion” because personally I feel that different individuals would have different experiences which molds how they view the world including their attachments and attitudes in this case. 

LBH admired and idolized SQQ from their very first meeting and he didn’t have that kind of reverence for NYY so from there, that’s already a big difference on how he viewed the two of them and hence, the difference on his attachment as well. Moreover, LBH wasn’t interested in his relationship (or the lack thereof) to other characters because by then, he was focused on SQQ who has become nice to him already. Kindness isn’t the sole factor for LBH but the initial reverence as well.

LWJ had always been a character of intense emotions which might not be too obvious because he’s practiced control all his life. He was mourning for WWX yes, but he was never dysfunctional even with the loss of WWX. He continued his duties and he helped people. Grieving doesn’t mean your sadness ends as in you’re not going to get affected by it anymore and you become a new person. Growth can exist despite grieving. That feeling of grief can never fully disappear but over time, it can become smaller and more manageable. That area of grief will become smaller as you function and continue your life and a purpose can expand around that emotion. Very concrete example - LWJ was a wreck when he first found out WWX’s death that the whole drunken thing and Wen mark on his chest happened. That was him at the height of his grief. But did that persist all throughout? No. He collected himself back and still became a functional member of society. His good reputation remained precisely because he had a purpose that wrapped around that grieving. 

I think that your concern isn’t really on the attachment per se but the after effect of it in your eyes wherein the MLs didn’t have close friends like the MCs. And there’s a simple reason there - they’re not interested. That disinterest isn’t just because of their attachment but their attitude as well so it’s a mixture of both. Not everyone wants to talk about their feelings to others because we each all have our own versions of healing.

The two both had nothing to say, not giving each other a sideways glance. One in front and one behind, their footsteps made no breath of sound. The atmosphere was stiff and cold.

Pushing open the door and entering, the furnishings and arrangement of the room were quite familiar-looking. In fact, it was quite similar to the bamboo house on Qing Jing Peak.

Omg. OMG. So let me get this straight. Lbh spent years mourning his Shizun, keeping the wounds he had left him, keeping sqq's broken sword, keeping his freaking corpse and (now we find out) making a room similar to the one in the bamboo house-

This is borderline obsession and yet my heart aches for lbh so much i just... PLS Shizun. PLS.

EDIT 3:

Now acting like a miserable child and throwing tantrums, making his heart overflow with sympathy. Now again hitting his face and telling him it was all an act. Real or fake, his eyes weren’t sharp enough to clearly see autumn feathers and see through Luo Binghe’s heart to understand what he was really thinking, some parts truth and some parts hypocrisy.

(Guys, sqq is angry because lbh put on a facade in the dreamscape. He is angry and disappointed and wary of lbh possibly using the same "trick" on him again and again just to move sqq's heart. I honestly thought Shizun had understood by now.

Like, okay, lbh tricked him the second time to see if that was really Shizun or just a figment of his imagination, but can you blame him?? You have been dead for years, sqq!! He probably went insane with pain, has always been in love with you when in his eyes you betrayed him by pushing him into the abyss, come on! If you two would just fucking talk-)

While he was still brooding over these thoughts, Luo Binghe walked a step closer to him.

Luo Binghe used every method he knew, but still, nothing worked.

He was originally just blurting something out, but unexpectedly, after he knocked twice, a voice actually responded from inside.

The voice was clearly coming from inside the coffin, but it was as crisp as if it was right next to his ears, not muffled in the slightest. It seemed to carry the hint of a laugh. “Please help yourself.”

when I started shipping it if I did: immediately. i started the novel for them. but if i have to choose a moment... the carriage scene when sqq still had the ooc filter. that’s when i just knew i would love them with all my heart.

my thoughts: when i started the novel i already knew about them. but their first scene together, lbh’s innocent eyes progressively sparkling in sqq’s presence, his being jealous and frustrated over his shizun, shizun mourning his absence, lbh’s pain at shizun’s death... i shipped them every time i saw them together (still do) **

what makes me happy about them: their disciple/shizun relationship in the beginning was the purest, cutest and most frustrating thing i’ve ever read, of course i fell in love at first sight. lbh was SO CUTE AND PRECIOUS OMG. now i just need them both to be happy to be happy myself
