Self-Care in Times of Atrocities

This is something I've been struggling with myself, and it's also something I have a general chip on my shoulder about (in terms of the corporatization of self-care, ugh), so here have a post

It can feel impossible or even cruel, to "practice self-care" in the face of the world right now - and in particular, in the face of the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

So, I think it's really important to say that self-care does not mean that you are always emotionally balanced at all, that you are never overcome with rage and grief at the horror of ongoing atrocities.

To never be overcome by rage or horror or grief or any other negative emotions would be to shut ourselves off from a huge part of the human experience, in a situation where our connection to our common humanity is, I would argue, more important than ever.

Some days you will feel completely laid low by that rage and horror and grief. Sometimes for a few hours, sometimes for days or more.

That's not only normal, it is a completely rational response to what Israel is inflicting on Palestinians right now. I think it's a completely rational response to any genocide.

In some ways it's also a healthy response. Bottling up or choking off your emotions isn't good for you. Refusing to ever sit with pain isn't good for you. Refusing yourself grief and mourning and catharsis isn't good for you. We know all of this.

Self-care, in times of atrocity, doesn't mean always keeping yourself on some kind of even keel. In a lot of ways I think it means letting yourself cry, letting yourself channel all of your storming emotions into a force that can help, rather than just eat you up inside.

And self-care isn't the kind of corporate, hypercapitalist "buy yourself out of your feelings" bs that we're quite literally sold, either.

Self-care is, very often, not about indulging or pampering yourself (not that there's anything wrong with indulging or pampering yourself).

A lot of the time it just means...taking care of your physical form, as best you can, even when you least want to, so you don't pile more on top of everything else.

A lot of the times it means making yourself eat something, even just some crackers, even though you feel sick from horror.

Or groaning and forcing yourself to drink a glass of water, because you can, you have access to drinkable water, and you can honor that for the privilege it is by avoiding a terrible dehydration headache.

Or making yourself take a shower, even though it's the last thing you feel like doing, because you have an important meeting tomorrow.

Or locking your phone in a drawer for a while, because staying up all night doomscrolling won't do anything but drain you further.

And if you're ever feeling too guilty to do any of that, remember: you cannot pour from an empty vessel. Meeting your own basic needs as best you can is one really, really important way to make sure you have the energy to help.

thinking about the elections tonight... bad, cellbit, baghera, and forever are four candidates who are devoted to the island- more specifically, to the residents of the island. They care for the eggs, and they care for each other, and the way they exhibit that care through their primary presidential strategies is fucking fascinating.

Bad is who I watch the most, so I know him best. He's a classic mother hen. He doesn't like to take risks with the eggs, and he likes to prepare. If there's any sort of variable that could hurt an egg then he wants to control it. They have a stable relationship with the federation right now- it's not great, but they know the parameters. Don't trust cucurucho. don't follow cucurucho. send the eggs to NINHO every time there's a threat. the time of day changing means you need to run. Other than that they're p okay and roughly safe. But adding a president could potentially change everything. What if the president makes a rule that makes it easier to kill the eggs? And what about the way a president could cause tensions between the players to rise even higher? The dynamics of the island could change drastically. It's safer to neutralize that threat before it ever becomes a threat. It's easier to stop a war before it can start.

Baghera's primary concern is the way the election is designed to pit the residents against each other. All of them know that the Federation is a threat and she, like Bad, is focused on not letting them hurt more people. But, unlike Bad, she's less resistant to change. If the power is spread to multiple players rather than just one, it will be harder for the Federation to corrupt any one of them. Each time before the Federation has gotten to someone it's done so by isolating them. Felps, Cellbit, Jaiden- they've all spent a lot of alone time with Cucurucho. A council isn't just to consolidate the ideals of the island; a council would protect the players themselves. Sure, there might be disagreements and arguments, but they've had those before (and they're having them now!) and there's no reason to think they wouldn't be able to get through them again.

I hit a bit of a wall with Forever and Cellbit's pov here. Everything I know about their plans are from the debates and paraphrased discussions that have been translated here on tumblr, I'm going to talk less about their explicit plan and more about what the result will entail- a single president who takes responsibility for the island. It seems to me like they've recognized the presidential seat as the powerful opportunity that it is, and they want to take advantage of it. Here's some extra personal speculation but, adding rules, adding or removing mods, proposing public works, enforcing laws- those are just the abilities that are listed. Those are incredible opportunities to make the Federation take action, which is more than they've had before. We've seen before that the Federation isn't perfect; the Federation makes mistakes.

By working with the Federation, by making them take action (in a semi-controlled, semi-predictable way) you open them up to more opportunities for them to fuck up (while benefiting you). And, maybe, one of those fuck ups will be the key to taking them down. Maybe they could reopen ender chests. Maybe they could open the nether. Maybe they could learn why the Federation is holding an election in the first place. It's possible to do all these things with Baghera's plan, sure, but that's not a guarantee and, if someone like Bad is on the council, there's absolutely no way to be sure it would get done. And, if there's a council, then that opens up everyone on the council to the Federation's wiles. If there's just one president, then that's where the Federation's focus will be. By using a single person to build a relationship with the Federation, they only risk that single person. By electing ministers instead of a council, they can ensure that the island residents' needs are being heard while placing the federation's focus on that one person. A point can be made that they've done that before- with varying results. like kidnapping. selling your soul. etc. But! overall, I think they've gained more than they've lost by singling out one person. Because of them, we know that Cucurucho can't be trusted. We know that the Federation has a series of tunnels underneath the island. We know that the Federation not only has some sort of cryo technology, but had some unknown reason to use it. We know that there was another person working with Cellbit to take care of Felps (theorized to be ElQuackity), so we know there's at least one more Fed that isn't Cucurucho + blank-faced workers. There's been risk, but there's absolutely been rewards. This is just a very long meandering way to say that their plan to sacrifice Forever to the presidential seat reminds me very much of Cellbit's plan to sacrifice himself to the federation. They're saving their friends by potentially damning themselves and I, for one, think that is cool as hell.

they all care about each other so much. bad's plan means taking on no more risk. baghera's plan means spreading that risk evenly to stand strong together. and cellbit and forever's plan means taking the risk onto themselves so they can reap the rewards for others. am i reading too much into things? no this is tumblr and this smp is about LOVE and i really genuinely think that their election plans are a fantastic example of just how much they love each other

I want to comment on everything my mutuals say because whatever they posted is important to them, so it's important to me, too! I realise I haven't talked much about trans stuff on here, but this is important.

WARNING: I will be talking about the murder of trans teen Brianna Ghey, so if that makes you uncomfortable then just don't read this

Brianna Ghey's killers- have finally been named as Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe. Jenkinson has been sentenced to 22 years in prison and Ratcliffe 20. The actual murder took place on the 12th February 2023. (I would write the short date but then Americans would think I meant the 2nd of November). At the time of the murder, Brianna's killers were both 15 (they're 16 now) and Brianna was 16. They had been close friends since they were 11. They had a kill list of 4 people. Unfortunately, Brianna made friends with Scarlett. This caused her to come to the top of their list. On the 11th February 2023, Brianna agreed to meet Scarlett in culcheth linear park. When she arrived, Eddie and Scarlett stabbed her at the same time. One of them stabbed her in the stomach and the other stabbed her in the back. They stabbed her more times afterwards before running away. At first, the media attempted to convince people that the motive for murder was Scarlett's serial killer obsession. Now, however, it has been understood that her murder was a transphobic hate crime. I remember hearing it mentioned on the radio once. We had a conversation that went something like this:

Me (having researched the case)- I've heard quite a lot about that case

My mum- yeah it's been on the news a lot

Sister- what happened?

Me- a girl called Brianna was killed for being trans

My mum- it turns out it's not actually to do with them being trans

I remember hearing wanting desperately to tell my mum that a) she should not be using they/them pronouns for a dead trans person who used she/her pronouns because it's kinda fucked up misgendering a dead girl and b) her death was because of transphobia. You can argue that it was because of a serial killer obsession as much as you like but there was a reason that she was at the top of their kill list and that reason is that she was trans. Trans people are dying. Don't you dare to try and feed me any of your transphobic bullshit. Things are not ok.

the way matt creates these emotionally** flat??? characters who have family attachments to the main pcs and yet there's just something.... off about the way they display intimacy that it equally angers me, makes my skin crawl, and makes me just want to write extensively on what a master storyteller matt is. the way he presents just in this campaign alone, parental figures that on paper can easily be defended and rallied behind somehow especially if their choices played out more negatively than they intended*, and yet actually experiencing people who you, individually, care so much about in your life and who, you would just naturally believe, would also care so much about you, but there's a blip on the monitor and a disconnect that at first is so infinitesimal. until it's not. until you get bruised deeper and they look at you the same. and it's like there's no true empathetic connection. from your "loved one". it's not malice, it's not heartless or calloused, it's just.... it's surface-level and it's crossed t's and dotted i's and you know that they do not mean it to hurt you. but they also don't really mean it when they tell you they love you. and it aches so incredibly well done that matt will have these figures look into the eyes of their own and say the words and have a softness in their face, and yet have no genuine fierceness to the love they claim for someone who has so much love for them. and it's not a criticism, it's just so well done because it's such a nuanced relationship in the world and it sucks but matt always delivers it so perfectly

From now until march, along with KOSA and support for trans folks/tumblr's transphobia, I'm only going to be reblogging posts about Palestine, Congo, Sudan and the potential other countries that I'm unaware of subjected to atrocities and genocides all at the same time (because just when you thought you've seen the depths of human vileness you learn about something else happening that makes you realise no you didn't). My blog's pretty small so this probably doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but since I didn't completely go through with the strike this time around I feel like the least I can do is this. General reminder to not stop talking about the genocides, donate if you can, write/call up your MPs, show support for the trans community and spread as much awareness as possible about all these issues mentioned. If you want an actual answer though haha, I've decided it's best left to the imagination. Like I think it would be actively detrimental to the story if I wrote it out word for word. Sometimes part of writing is knowing what to flesh out and what to not.

I don't think it would be a confession, though.

I think Sampo has a hilariously hard time laying himself bare, even though he LOVES getting attention from Gepard. For being a personal letter, it probably doesn't get TOO personal, and the only reason Sampo would leave such a thing behind for him at all is on the off chance he'll never see him again. I think it would take a pretty extreme circumstance, like death, to make Sampo be honest. But then, what does honesty matter at that point? Is it worth it, will it only make it worse? Does it change anything? Sampo will still be dead and gone. Gepard will still be left behind. Does Sampo want Gepard to know anything? I'm not sure he would.

(That said, it does make for a good scene, doesn't it? Gepard pokes through the safehouse, and he finds the beat up metal box, full of letters. He sees one with his name. And he slowly sinks onto the bed, carefully pulls it open.

The letter is still never shown. But it's not the words that are important.

It's the way that Gepard holds it tight between his fingers, realizes that he's creasing the paper, then urgently smooths it out again. It's the way that every successive sentence makes his breath stutter. It's the way he gets to the end of the page and is suddenly so, so exhausted that he sits curled over the letter, heart too heavy to hold until it's unbearable weight bowed his back.

And finally, Gepard drags himself up. Sighs all the air out of his lungs. He grabs the box, and he makes his solitary march back to Belobog.)

((When he returns, he reports straight to Bronya, and shows her what he found. Bronya notices that there's only one letter in there with Gepard's name, one with nothing but detailed instructions, and she elects not to say anything. She doesn't want to rub salt in the wound, especially not one so fresh.

She completely misses that Gepard has kept the second letter separate, tucked away in his armored coat, in the inside pocket against his chest.))
