Today I learned about the "Knuth reward check", a check with a computer-related amount (usually $2.56), awarded by famed computer scientist Donald Knuth to anyone finding errors in his publications. It's considered a great prize among computer nerds.
I would like to think that at least one of the ENCOM trio would have gotten one at some point. Flynn would probably frame his and hang it on display for everyone to see at the arcade. Alan would probably be a little more humble, maybe sticking it up on the wall of his cubicle? And I think it would be funny if Lora just shrugged and went to cash hers in, to Flynn's and Alan's horror.

Why People Can’t Trust the Media
Why People Can’t Trust the Media and why its partly due to people not doing research and partly due to new technology
Within the past 20 years, our societies around the globe, particularly in Global North and developed nations, have become incredibly uniform, killing off a diversity of thought and culture and, in some ways, variety in how we live our lives. Just take a walk in your local public centres, places of gathering, particularly in cities, and you will witness how uninformed people have…

You're suggesting that I read a book about LBJ???
Should I pick one from this bookcase, or the other FULL bookcase I have that entirely consists of books about Lyndon Baines Johnson and/or the Johnson Administration?
Tumblr media
The idea that Lyndon Johnson had to be "dragged to sign the civil rights act by a republican congress" is as laughable as the claim that Donald Trump did more for Black people than any President since Lincoln. Republicans were absolutely essential to passing LBJ's multiple pieces of significant civil rights legislation but Lyndon Johnson was the driving force behind every civil rights bill that he signed into law. Any brief study of the Civil Rights Movement or time spent listening to the tapes of President Johnson's phone calls tirelessly working to win Republican votes clearly tells the actual story.
The passage of LBJ's most important civil rights legislation -- particularly the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 -- was the result of LBJ's incredible mastery of the legislative process and fierce determination to enact meaningful civil rights laws. And if you don't want to take my word for it, go back and read what Black leaders since Martin Luther King Jr. have been saying for nearly 60 years about LBJ's essential role as a leader and as a partner in getting real legislation pushed through Congress and formally signed into law. John F. Kennedy couldn't have accomplished what LBJ did on civil rights and there's not a Republican President who would have even tried.
There are plenty of subjects that I am not even close to being an expert about, but I can guarantee you that I've studied Lyndon Johnson extensively and his accomplishments in domestic policy -- specifically civil rights -- is one area where I know what I am talking about.

The theme of the Democratic National Convention’s first night was “Democrats Donald Trump has vanquished.” The night’s keynotes were delivered by two of them. Hillary Clinton, the nominee who fell to Trump in 2016, gave a rousing, passionate prime-time address. She’s out for vengeance, however vicarious it must be. Madam Secretary will never be Madam President, but she thirsts to see Kamala Harris do what she could not and stop Trump.
Yet Trump also knows a thing or two about revenge, and he’s already requited himself against the only opponent ever to beat him. That was Joe Biden, whose career Trump brought to a prompt end after their first—and only—in-person rematch on June 27 this year. Yes, Trump defeated Biden—not just on that fateful night, when Biden’s wounds were mostly self-inflicted, but in the following weeks when Trump’s advantage over Biden became so commanding that the incumbent president was forced out of the race.
Not since 1968, when the tag team of Eugene McCarthy and Robert F. Kennedy Sr. deterred Lyndon Baines Johnson from seeking re-election, had a sitting president been beaten like this, before the general election even began. And while Johnson’s heart might not have been set on his seeking a second term, Biden’s very much was. Trump destroyed his dream.
The Joe Biden who addressed the convention last night was already a ghost, one fated to haunt the White House until January 20. He’s an angry, impotent spirit. Heedless of his naked hypocrisy, he linked Trump to neo-Nazis in one breath and insisted in the next that he had been a president for all Americans, “demonizing no one.” On the contrary, he demonized Republicans relentlessly, not just last night but throughout his administration. “Democracy has prevailed, democracy has delivered, and now democracy must be preserved!” he shouted—after he, the democratically chosen nominee of the Democratic Party’s voters, handed the nomination over to a replacement who had never won so much as a single presidential primary.

Donald Currie Caskie was born on May 22nd 1902 at Bowmore, Islay, his exploits during WWII earned him the nickname "The Tartan Pimpernel"
Dr Caskie was the minister at the Scots Kirk in Paris when the Germans invaded France in 1940 and frequently denounced the Nazis from the pulpit which meant he had more to fear than many after the invasion.
He was repeatedly urged to return home and after the Dunkirk evacuation he locked the church on the 9th of June of that year and joined the mass exodus of Paris, heading south.
The crofter's son from the inner Hebridean island of Islay, said to have had the Celtic gift of second sight, endured weeks of hardship to get to Bayonne but in the end rejected the chance of safe passage on the last ship bound for England on the grounds that his place should be given to a wounded man instead.
He walked to a village called Cambo les Bains where he met friends from Paris purely by chance and they all drove to the port city of Marseille - leaving just hours before the Germans arrived.
Dr Caskie believed that God had commanded him to stay in France and help stranded British subjects and he was warned that he must only engage with civilians and would be arrested if he assisted servicemen.
He ran a Seaman's Mission but was living a double life and secretly helped airmen, seamen and soldiers, under the noses of the Vichy Police, escape the country across mountains into Spain or by sea in a submarine or ship.
Dr Caskie, a Gaelic speaker whose codename was Monsieur Le Canard – Donald Duck – was eventually recruited by British Intelligence officers and was told that his mission was the last link of a chain of safe houses that they had set up, which stretched from Dunkirk to Marseille.
One of the soldiers Dr Caskie helped was Captain Derek Lang who was captured at St Valery-en-Caux in Normandy along with 10,000 soldiers from the 51st Highland Division, mostly Scots, 81 years ago this weekend.
He managed to escape the Germans and fled to Marseille where he recalled meeting a "courageous and fearless" Church of Scotland minister.
"Evil in war produces heroes and Donald Caskie is one of these," wrote the army officer in the forward to the Tartan Pimpernel – a book he said moved him to tears.
Caskie spoke Gaelic to confuse German spies and inquisitors, but was betrayed by an English double agent. He evaded the firing squad and then restarted his activities in Grenoble. There he again repeatedly escaped the clutches of the Nazis until he was sentenced to death - when the intervention of a German pastor had his sentence commuted and he saw out the war in a PoW camp. His awards were: OBE, MA and O.C.F.(an honour bestowed by the French government). The OBE was awarded by the king for services to his country.
The medal, along with other personal artefactcs, is on display in the church. at Bonore. His autobiography, The Tartan Pimpernel was published in 1951.

hey! what's your favorite david tennant character? i know its a tough question but i'd like to hear your reasoning!!
Oh my god, I'm so sorry I missed this!!! It's been soo long I'm sorry
I think I'm gonna have to say Alec Hardy. I think @davidtennantgenderenvy put it very well in their DT video essay; to me, Broadchurch sort of marks an important shift in DT characters and roles, and I think that's just really interesting.
On a character level, I just love him so much. He's so packed full of angst and whump and I eat that shit up. Sickness, trauma, social-awkwardness, wet cat syndrome, sad little dad? He's a fanfic writers ideal muse. The grip him and Ellie had on me was so crazy -- on my first watch I was late to school because I kept trying to watch more of it in the morning. It was like I COULD NOT set it down.
My close second is Crowley, because he kicked off my David Tennant disease and I'm grateful for that. Close third Campbell Bain. Honourable mentions: Tenth doctor (obvious reasons), Donald Peterson (first exposure)
I hope that's a good answer lol. Sorry for taking a month to answer it
Tumblr media
(This is unforgivable, though ^)
