TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA DOGS AU ORIGINS AND EXPLANATIONS + DRAWINGS!

So! We still have Baron Draxum and his warrior scientist thing going on, but he’s gone a bit of a different route! He’s decided to try mixing different species to try and create the ultimate weapon, and he has decided to start with wolves, turtles, and the champion of the Battle Nexus (still Lou Jitsu)!

Since wolves have their size, a reasonable amount of trainability, and enhances senses, he thought they would be the best choice for the base species. It also helped that wolves were pack animals and worked best as a team while also being able to be self-sufficient should the need arise. He had sent Huggin and Munnin off to the surface to get him a litter of wolf pups, and they end up finding these little guys!

They all were left in their mother’s den, as she had unfortunately been hunted and forced to leave the four pups on their lonesome at only a few days old. Draxum deemed them perfect and set to work collecting his turtles!

He decided different species would add a variety of skills among the subjects that would make them perfect for war. He had chosen which pup would be crossed with which turtle over the course of a week, as he had to get a sense for who would be the most compatible. Of course, we continue along the canon line and Lou Jitsu is acquired and brought to Draxum’s lab. He practically fell in love with the pups and turtles alike, affectionately calling them nicknames.

The night comes where Draxum has readied his mutagen and, after a row of small tests on the animals to make sure they would be alright through the process, he began the mutation. The combination of wolf, turtle, and human could begin to give him the perfect beginning to his army!

As we all know, it doesn’t all go according to plan; the mutation chambers break and Draxum’s lab begins to fall apart! Lou Jitsu goes to save all of the little animals and bring them back to the surface to give them a home when he realizes there are only four animals instead of eight! The turtles and wolf pups have fused together to make a wolf-turtle mutant with the mix of human DNA, leaving the poor things unable to lead a normal life with their fellow canines.

Lou Jitsu scoops them up and runs back to where he knows the surface is safe whilst battling against the clock of his own mutation into a rat. He takes cover in the sewers of New York City, finding them a relatively clean area to call home for however long they must. The pups start to wake up and climb all over the now rat-turned Lou, who struggles with setting them down in time to make sure they don’t hurt themselves.

Years go on, and the pups aren’t growing at the natural rate regular wolves would. Lou only knows this from his memories of his own childhood dogs who would be twice their size by the time they were a year old! These pups were still small, only having grown an inch or so when they should be fully grown at 3 years old, and they still acted like puppies playing around with their siblings. Only then does it strike him that his own DNA that had mixed with them must have slowed down their aging cycle, leading them to have more of a human lifespan than that of a regular canine’s. His own DNA isn’t the only thing that has caused changes; the turtle DNA has caused a change in their physiology. Their backs and stomachs are harder with courser fur compared to the softness when they were still regular wolf pups. This led to less physical stomach and back injuries for everyone due to this resistance!

He also takes note of how the four interact vocally. Michelangelo and Leonardo both lean to higher pitched chirp-like yips and barks, while Donatello and Raphael lean more to chestier huffs and grunts. It only made sense that the order of birth had gone Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, then Michelangelo when their mother had them in the wild. To differentiate the four (and to make them easier to grab when they inevitably got into something), Lou had found some cloth of four varying colors and tied them into small bandanas for the brothers.

As they grew up, the boys started learning how to speak from listening to Lou talk to himself and from the old movies he watched. The rat was very surprised when he heard a yelp, then saw little Leonardo hobble over to him with his paw held in the air. “Spl…Splinter!” He had cried, holding up the hurting paw. Ever since then, the boys all started to call the rat “Splinter”, even though Leo had only said it because he had gotten hurt by one (Splinter wasn’t going to look too deep into that).

When it came to milestones, the order goes as follows: Leo learned how to talk first, Raph learned how to walk on his hind legs first, Donnie learned how to read first, and Mikey was the first one to open his eyes and his ears. Splinter has many photos of them all growing up that he never hesitates to break out during birthdays, holidays, the first time April came over, everything!

Some more fun facts about how this changes the boys in little ways:

Leo is hard of hearing. Red Eared Sliders, and turtles in general, are known for having horrible hearing but great eyesight. That was a trait that passed to Leo. He doesn’t mind it, but when they are teens and after the invasion (hehe ASL au), Donnie makes him hearing aids to help him.

All of the boys are allergic to chocolate! Much like regular dogs, chocolate can be lethal for them if eaten in large quantities, and can make them sick if eaten just a little bit.

The boys LOVE fruit. It’s a mix of their turtle and canine sides, and they love it as a little treat. Leo and Mikey love peanut butter as well, but they have it extremely rarely due to Raph’s allergy and Donnie never buys any since he doesn’t like it.

Note

For the fic title game, maybe something like "With Love, from an Alternate Timeline" or something with a fic/album title like "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge"? Or, finally, maybe funky like "Disaster Twins, Deft Torpedoes"? (Feel free to pick and choose which to answer!)

I like the ring that "With Love, from an Alternate Timeline" has, there's something very catchy about that. Unfortunately, couldn't think of anything.

Also mega distracted by the MCR title.

SO!

"Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" Otherwise known as "You Kidnapped the Wrong Fucking Turtles"

Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo disappear.

Donatello, Splinter, April, and the Caseys are scrambling to find them.

It had been a regular patrol, the brothers scattering to chase after the stupid mutant silverfish taking advantage of the mess left in the wake of the failed invasion. Except Donnie loses contact with his brothers and the trackers--his trackers--go offline. Donnie knows his tech doesn't just fail like that, no fucking way. Someone's stolen his brothers and he's going to track them down and get them back.

It takes weeks of doing. Maybe several months. Scraping what clues and pieces of information they can. Donnie grits his teeth and enlists the Purple Dragons to assist him (not help, he doesn't need help, thank you very much). Kendra mocks him at first, but then she must see something on his face because she shuts up real quick. The government is the first suspect, because they were definitely poking around a lot during and after the Krang invasion. But nope! The government's not interested in trying to detain the people--mutant or not--who stopped an alien race for taking over the planet with goo and body horror. They'd rather leave the turtles well enough alone (and for the turtles to leave them alone, please, dear god, we can't fight you guys, we leave you alone and you leave us alone, okay). But if the government doesn't have Donnie's brothers, then who does? Baxter Stockboy? Mm, nope, but they do confiscate some high grade military tech from a kid who really shouldn't have it. Meatsweats? Nada. Draxum!? He's offended you would think such a thing. Not because he cares or anything like that. Just. He doesn't have time for that sort of thing anymore, you know.

But Draxum wasn't the only scientist-alchemist-whathaveyou in the Hidden City. And somebody got vveeerrryyyyy interested in the turtles after seeing what they did to stop the Krang. Some yokai has Leo, Raph, and Mikey and has been putting them through their paces. Read: unethical experimentation.

And the family can't just charge in half-cocked, willy-nilly, pell-mell. This yokai has a stronghold, has guards, is just as dangerous as some human facility, if not moreso because of the mystic powers available to them. It's dangerous and downright deadly. It's a stealth mission. So say they manage to sneak in. Then they separate to go their separate ways and Donnie beelines for a server room or file room or whatever. And it's going great! He sneaks in no problem! He finds out where they're keeping his brothers!

And he finds out what's been happening to them.

And he's pissed.

You DO NOT touch his family and you certainly don't do what's been done to his brothers. Donnie will be the first to admit that his morals are somewhat questionable. He knows his science gets a little...mad at times. But never in his life would he do the things that have been done here.

Well. Maybe he'll make an exception. For the yokai that have marked his brother's files with "TERMINATED".

Donnie snaps.

Forget stealth, he's going to raze this place to the ground and scorch the dust and bury the ashes and salt the earth. There will be nothing left when he's done. His Ninpo goes wild, he's tearing the place apart, he's killing indiscriminately, the rage he feels is too big, too much. The fury and desperation he'd felt when he'd flung his drill at the Krang through Mikey's portal to save Leo? That was a fraction of this almighty, crushing anger. Donatello is out of control, he is a beast, he is wild, he is a veritable god of power as he rips the building from its foundations and screams his vengeance upon the fools who thought to cross the Hamato clan. He crushes lives out underfoot and doesn't care about the blood that smears his hands. His weapons are endless, his body is a machine, he is righteous fury and he is light, and life, and fire! He is a god, a dragon, a nuclear warhead.

He is the atom bomb and he will destroy everything in his wake.

The only thing that stops him, is a faint, hoarse, plaintive chirp.

Because there are his brothers. Definitely worse for wear, frightened and hurt, but alive.

The monster eases, Donnie breathes. He staggers over to his family, falls to his knees in front of his brothers, and pulls them into a hug. No one cares about how much blood is on him, on the ground, everywhere. Because they're together again. They're okay.

Donnie doesn't leave them alone for days. He badgers them while they're healing, he sleeps in the med bay, he drops everything to take care of his brothers. His temper feels closer to the surface, like letting his Ninpo rage like a wildfire has irreversibly changed something in him. But he naps next to Raph, he draws with Mikey, he smiles at Leo's stupid puns. (Later, much later, after they witness that temper again almost level a city block, Raph takes Donnie aside and talks to him about how to turn that anger elsewhere.)

There's scars, of course. No one escapes these sorts of things without them. But no one in the Hidden City is ever going to try to touch the Hamato clan, not after this.

Donnie's pretty sure they got the message (and if he stays awake some nights smelling iron and hearing screams and feeling the power simmering just beneath his skin, then he crawls into Leo's bed and they watch stupid videos until they pass out in the early hours of the morning).

TMNT Cheat Sheet

There are many, many incarnations of the best reptilian adolescent quartet of ninjas. And yet, believe it or not, there are common threads running through their many incarnations that a newcomer to the franchise might find helpful.

Note that I say common threads; each incarnation of the Hamato Brothers are unique characters. This is just a helpful introduction.

What the Uninformed Would have you believe

Leo: The Mom/Leader

Raph: The angry one

Don: The Intelligent/One with a plan

Mikey: The baby/comic relief

The preceding is lacking in many ways but above all it is not sexy.

[⚙️] Character Info Sheet

name: Grum name meaning: Their name means wrench, if pronounced correctly. Imagine a very deep-voiced heavy metal singer singing 'gum'. It's about like that. Grum stems from a generation of Utrom that have been known as great engineers and machine scientists and all their names refer to tools. alias/es: Kraang 811986 (while being mind-controlled), Bubblegum (by Rick, they just roll with it at that point tbh) and pretty much whatever other nickname people give them at some point. They are different from many other Utrom in the way that they use no exosuit and rely on their flyer, so they have no exosuit/human alias. ethnicity: Utrom, or Xephalopod Utrom (a wide-spread subspecies of the Utrom that '87 Krang stems from, but no Utrom ever really talk about it) one two picture(s) you like best of your chara My art muse has been so fickle lately and I didn't really draw much of meaning aside from just editing icons for them. I definitely wanna draw my little grape more in the future tho. You know, whenever inspiration hits me.

three h/cs you've never told anyone:

1) Grum pronounces their own name wrong when introducing themself to a human (saying the 'r' in it out loud while actually you don't). It is widespread knowledge among Utrom that most humans can't pronounce Utrom names correctly, so they don't bother and usually use different names altogether (like the Council for example). Which seems rather pretentious despite the lack of hard feelings, but it has just stuck with them. 2) Like many other Utrom, Grum is gluten-intolerant. They are also allergic to strawberries. Other than that though, they can digest many things that Earth has to offer. They are not really picky either, but due to their strawberry allergy, they don't like fruits that are similar to it (like raspberries). 3) They always carry a towel in their tiny backpack to clean themself up after work or eating. It's not obsessive, but Grum cares a great deal about hygienics and makes sure to keep themself and their equipment clean. You know they are stressed when they overlook a speck on themself after finishing work.

three things your character likes doing in their free time:

1) You know Grum is going to fix or improve some devices in their supposed 'free time'. Just being idle and doing nothing is not really relaxing for them. Keeping their tentacles busy is what keeps them the happiest. 2) They study a lot when they're not actually working. They have a tablet/pad in their backpack where they can also connect to Earth's Internet. Not unlike Bishop, their research can result in wild assumptions, depending on the topic and results. It is easier to feed Grum with wrong knowledge though. They can be a little gullible at times. 3) Trying out new things. Like cooking or crafting. Just as mentioned above, they are the happiest when their tentacles stay busy with something.

eight a few people your character likes / loves: That's a tricky one. While I have Grum intertwined in the Canon as having been a part of Kraang's hive and therefore harboring hard feelings towards Krang and Subprime, I haven't spent awfully much time thinking about their relationship with the other characters to be quite honest. The Salamandrian scout K'Arakga was their first friend after being on their own, even though they parted ways again. They are also on good terms with Bishop, since the latter offered to help them reconcile with the Utrom numerous times. And, considering Grum is a good fellow who tries to redeem themself, they do get along with Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello, and April. Grum is likely to stay in contact with Donatello the most though. two things your character regrets: Even though Grum never really had any control over it in the first place, their biggest regret is having been a part of the Kraang Hive. There are also moments where they regret numerous decisions they made, like some of their awkward socializing attempts that resulted in uncomfortable situations... two phobias your character has: Ever since having their own identity mixed up with Kraangs, they experience a great fear of memory loss (Athazagoraphobia). The thought of potentially forgetting someone or something important causes them huge distress, even though it is very untypical for Utrom to forget something entirely. Their dislike for being touched borders to a mild fear of hugging (Haphephobia). While they don't necessarily feel pain, the sense of guilt they harbor causes them great emotional discomfort when they're touched. It is a phobia they can and certainly will overcome over time, tho.

I think one of the things I like in my turtles is specificity.

For instance, Rise are very specific turtles. They're quite different from the turtles in previous incarnations. And I like them! My favourite is Leo, who is especially different from other Leos.

87 are specific, in their case the pretty much had to be. They weren't aiming for the same demographic as Mirage (they were aiming at a different demographic in the hopes both demographics would buy the same toys) so no one had any pre-conceived notions of who these turtles would be. They didn't ignore who these turtles were in Mirage - although they adapted a bit, Raphael especially gets less violent - but they're not identical either. They're turtles that work in the story they're in.

The 90s movie turtles are shifted back towards the comic, but they're also pretty specific. Donatello's less of a genius, more of a double act with Mikey. Why? Probably because he's in a live action show and that makes hi-tech inventions higher budget than in a cartoon. Plus, it's all a bit more grounded, so he's not likely to invent some of the wild stuff 87 Donatello invents. They're turtles for this story.

The 03 turtles are a hard shift back as close to the comic as possible on children's television, but this doesn't make them less specific to their story. The story is also shifted closer to the comic.

The 07 movie is not specific. It assumes you know these guys, you know, they're the turtles! It doesn't bother to introduce any of them. It doesn't make it clear whether it's a sequel to the 90s movies or not. It's the first example (that I'm aware of) of what becomes a sort of "movie turtle soup", turtles that are a mix of all the most expected traits of previous iterations. They're meant to be immediately recognisable to the audience at the cost of leaving everything about them vague.

12 is a series but it's also pretty soupy. It's trying really, really hard to contain everything everyone liked about previous iterations. Everything memorable. So its turtles are pretty endearing and they grew on me, but they're deliberately built to be what you expect. Raphael is both "cool but rude" and the angry, fighty one, even though those were originally traits of two different Raphaels. Similarly, Donnie has bits of both 03 Donatello's level-headed compassion and 87 Donatello's mad scientist tendency towards explosions. It makes him come off as sweet, but highly-strung, which is, I guess, a new take after all.

Batman vs TMNT is fun but but it's movie turtle soup. The point is for them to be recognisable fast. As a result I enjoyed the movie but came away with little connection to the turtles.

I haven't seen Bayverse.

Rise, as I said, are specific. And I think that makes their movie more interesting too. They exaggerate traits more than in the series: Donnie being more averse to touch in general than sometimes not liking to use his hands and preferring his shell covered, for instance. But they don't expect viewers to come in already knowing who their turtles are, they're not assuming we've watched the series (I actually hadn't), and they get across who they are and what's going on between them in a fast and fun way.

I don't think Mutant Mayhem was soup. I didn't really enjoy it - this isn't the only thing that determines whether I like turtles, and in the end I liked 12 well enough even though I do think they're soup - but it did have specific turtles.

In no particular order:

1. Obi-Wan Kenobi -- Specifically in the movies and the Legends books I read growing up. ((Not a huge fan of him in the "Clone Wars." He just felt "off" to me, especially with the whole forced tragic romance plot meant to make him more "relatable" or whatever /rant)) Anyway, cool dude. Aspirational. Wish I could be as dedicated to God and my Secular Institute as he is to the Force and the Jedi.

2. Camilla Hect and Palamades Sextus -- Yes, that's two characters, but [SPOILERS] they become one character (which made me very sad, who is this new person??? I want my friends back!) so 🤷 Anyway, love the "cousins who may as well be siblings" thing, very relatable, as well as all the non-romantic love feels. Plus Cam is just a bada$$ knife nut, and I'm also a sucker for nerdy characters, which they both are.

3. Hunter Noceda -- Uh, I relate to him to an uncomfortable level. Like certain scenes with him and Belos made me realize that my childhood was a biiiit more traumatic than I'd realized *nervous laughter* See also: sucker for nerdy characters. Boy is a total nerd.

4. Duo Maxwell -- he's obnoxiously friendly and I love him for it. Raised Catholic until his orphanage got bombed 🥺 Uses humor to deflect from his problems, something I would never do. When I was his age I also had a 3 foot long braid. Would 100% want to punch him irl LOL Named my cat after him because he, too, is obnoxious and friendly and 'wears' black and white.

5. Toph Beifong -- I just love her. Stan a girl who goes barefoot and shows affection through punches and sarcasm. Definitely quoted her whenever I got called out for traipsing into the dining hall covered in "a healthy coating of earth" after working on the farm. And she wears my fav color (green).

6. Ellie Sattler -- I was 7 years old when Jurassic Park came out, and the Scully Effect was real, except it was Dr. Sattler who was my inspiration. I so wanted to be a cool scientist like her when I grew up! (well, I got to be a scientist; alas, not nearly so cool). As a little kid, one of my fav games was imagining I was her, running through the jungle eluding deadly velociraptors! These skills eventually came in handy when escaping via the swamp from some older neighborhood boys who wanted to beat me up because I was best friends with a boy they didn't like 😅

7. Samwise Gamgee -- He's just the best 💚 (On an unrelated note: Sean Astin stole my best friend's pen in college lol)

8. Corvus -- Just a genuinely good, honorable dude. Loved his interactions with Soren and Ezran especially! Also envy his tracking skills, even if he did mistakenly think Ezran got et.

9. San -- Running wild with the wolves = living the dream. The cool mask, adorable kodama, knives, and token kind human friend are just bonuses.

10. Donatello -- Dork. Nerd. Least cool of his brothers. 💚 him. *hums TMNT theme song* ((TMNT is my original fandom, and the first movie I saw in theaters!))

“This is how I think of “shipping”: When you start shipping someone, it starts out as a little sailboat. As hints are seen (in the actual show, movie, book, game, etc.), the sailboat slowly grows larger. When it becomes canon, the boat becomes a giant pirate ship with cannons (get it?). If the people suddenly break up, that means the ship ran into a giant Broken-Love-Iceberg.“

Romnt: More on fan project

This project was initially going to be part of a series of shorts stories with the formula: one turtle is a villain or antagonist in the story and the other is the hero, or variations of this it can be more than one on either side. It is like I won’t be able to do all the concepts I had in mind because of time. So I thought I would just share them with you, and if some of you really like these concepts and want to play around with them, go ahead.

Mikey vs. Donnie

Man there are so many different ways to write Rise Donnie as a villain. He could be a cyborg powerhouse who took over as the head commander for the mutant revolt after Draxum died in the mutant vs human war. Or Donnie could be a hardcore mad scientist who lost his ability to walk and his family after a horrific confrontation with the Shredder (who has successfully taken over the world) and he doesn’t care how many eggs he has to break so to speak to see Shredder’s world or anyone who exist in it burn.

The concept that I think would be extremely fun the write is one where Donnie as an evil adult version of himself has achieved his highest potential in his fighting skills, his intelligence, and his cold bloodedness (thanks to training under Draxum). He now rules this world (after he successfully assassinated Draxum) with his army of supporters, robots, mutants (and possible second mutation that he can change into at will). He is wise, arrogant, punctual, cold, vain, responsible, and he loves to be celebrated. This Donnie as this world’s commander takes care of those under him and of what he owns. The world is efficient, clean, and up-to-date with the latest technologies. He lets Leo and his rebels live only because he enjoys challenges. When you see him enter the room you immediately want to exit, not because he cares whether or not you are defiant to him, or submissive. No, it’s because he is so sure of himself so confident in his abilities that he has an aura of intimidation that makes you feel sub-par. He can also be petty and nickpicky.

But, Donnie is clueless on how to properly deal with his emotions, he struggles to keep control over some of them behind closed doors. Also there is this hollowness, he can’t place his finger on it. These things distract him sometimes and one day while he is going for a stroll around New York city he spots children from the orphanage playing in the playground. For the first time in his life he gives his undivided attention to children and notices they have something he doesn't. He wonders what he could learn from them, one in particular, a turtle wearing an orange bandanna sharing a story he made up with his friends. This young turtle’s enthusiasm with his ideas reminds Donnie of himself when he was little. Hmm…

(Yeah this piece was going to be 50% serious and 50% fluffy.)

Leo vs. Raph

This concept was inspired by the fact that snapping turtles will fight alligators from time to time in the wild until the gators get too big.

Detectives Leon and Donatello must figure out a way to stop a gang war brewing between the Red Reigns and the Sharp Teeths before they tear down Manhattan New York.

This could take place in a dystopia, utopia, or normal world. Also eye patch Raph is a thing and Casey is Raph’s right hand man.

Leo vs. Mikey

Leo has never faced an opponent this formidable in his life so far. This ruffian has once again successfully stolen an artifact under Leo’s guard. Michelangelo the thief, is a wild card. No one would ever think that this loose, carefree, careless guy would be as strong in a fight as he is and no one would ever think that he would a brilliant tactician either. Leo feels like he is spinning his wheels. For he is dealing with his most unpredictable rival yet.

Raph vs. Donnie

More like Raph vs Donnie’s overthink. Imagine a comedy where Raph is the voice that clears the fog for Donnie’s over analytical mind. But both of these two take turns of getting themselves into trouble.

Finally,

Donnie vs Leo

This story is the one I’m working on. Here is a short description.

Donnie, the gadget knight, must assist the kingdom of New Amsterdam in dealing with Leo, the terrifying dragon.

Callie Reviews: TMNT 2012 Season One (Part One)

Ever since 1984, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has gone form a cult-status indie comic to a massive mass market. There have been various comics, movies, video games, merchandise, and of course cartoons. And it’s easy to see why. TMNT’s concept, a group of mutated teen turtles fighting evil in New York, is both incredibly bizarre and incredibly appealing to a mass audience. You have action, science fiction, martial arts, and of course plenty of mutant ideas to make toys out of. The fact that this Fall will be releasing the fourth animated TMNT series and that a new movie series is in production shows that even over 30 years later, this is a franchise that is far from losing it’s power.

As a kid, I of course knew that Turtles as a thing and I even watch parts of 2k3. But I was never really a fan until the day I stumbled upon the 2012 show. I fell in love with it and, since it started when I was just starting this blog, it was a huge focus for me for several years. I have since moved on and while I’m going to check out the 2018 show, I don’t think I’m going to be as crazy as I was with this show (but never say never). Back in 2012, I was someone who... lets say ignored the flaws and defended the show far too passive aggressively to the point that looking at my older stuff makes me want to blow up by blog.

Nowadays, while some of my opinions hold true (like the ‘Donnie is a stalker’ accusations are still bullshit), I am more willing to admit the shows problems, especially now that I can take the show in fully. I also like to believe that I’ve become a better reviewer since I was 19 years old, plus it had been far too long since I went back over the show form the very beginning. So does the show still hold up? Will 25 year old Callie feel differently than 19 year old Callie did? Well we’re about to find out. This is the TMNT 2012 Season One Review!

The Premiere (Episodes 1-2)

Our story begins with a training sequence that introduces us to the titular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo. Along with some minor character establishment, like Mikey being the funny one and Raph the violent one, the biggest thing here is one of the shows strengths: the choreography. It’s best exhibited in Leo and Raph’s duel. The movements are very fluid and well-paced. It’s fast, but not too fast, it’s enough to move things along but still let you take in all the impacts. It’s very well done. Raph ends up winning and we are introduce to the boys mentor and father, Master Splinter. Aka, the best written character int he show, but we’ll get to that later.

After the opening theme, we cut to the boys 15th Mutation Day where we get our backstory. Borrowing from the 80′s show origin, Splinter was once a young man named Hamato Yoshi. He had just bought four pet turtles when he stumbled across a shady dealing. Being a ninja master, he was able to fight back, but he ended up getting splattered with a strange green substance. This turned him into a rat, as one brushed his ankle while the baby Turtles become anthropomorphic. Yoshi, taking on the name Splinter, fled to the sewers and raised the four turtles as his own as well as taught them ninjutsu. It’s a simple, but still solid telling of the origin that pays tribute to previous origins, leaves some mystery about the substance and who was dealing it, and is told with use of comic-style panels reminiscent of the original comics.

The Turtles, having lived in the sewers since their mutation, are hoping to convince Splinter to let them finally go to the surface. After some begging, Splinter reluctantly agrees. We then cut to Leo watching a Star Trek: The Animated Series parody where we learn of his desire to become a great hero and leader. This is interesting for several reasons. One, it establishes that Leo isn’t the leader of the group yet, a departure form normal as he’s normally put into that role automatically. And second, ti does a great job at character establishment. In previous versions, Leo is often seen as the boring, overly leader type. Not a bad character mind you, but he lacks the quirkiness that the tough Raph, genius Donnie, and wild child Mikey present. Here? Leo is shown to be an idealistic, naive, but good-intention kid who aspires to be a great hero like he sees on TV as well as give shim some dorky characteristics, like quoting cheesy one-liners to sound more heroic. It helps make him more relateable, funny, and sets up a character arc for when he does inevitably become the leader. Very well done.

The boys finally go to the surface, and are in awe of what they see. They even discover their trademark favorite food, pizza. Given that they only ever ate worms and algae until this point, it makes their love of it all the more understandable. But not all goes well as they soon witness a group of business men kidnapping a red-haired teenager and her father. They attempt to help, but end up only beating each other up and the bad guys get away with their captives. Mikey ends up beating up one and discovers... a brain with tentacles... yipe... he tries to tell the other three, but they don’t believe him. A common trend in the show.

Upon returning home, the boys try to blame each other for the failure before Splinter accepts it for not giving them proper training as a team. While he considers keeping them down below for another year, Donnie convinces him to let them go help the girl due to seeing how terrified she was and how they failed to help her... and because of the crush he developed in a record five seconds. Splinter agrees, but first assigns Leo as the official leader, much to the ire of Raph. They’re eventually able to find the kidnappers vehicle and wreck it, capturing the driver named Snake and they discover a vat of a glowing green substance. A vat that they recognize as the same one that caused their original mutation.

Snake, after Raph threatens to mutate him, leads the boys to the facility where the captives are... and uses the boys bickering as a chance to escape. Leo uses this to trick the crook into thinking that they’re going to plow his van into the place as he conducts a plan to sneak in. All while Roah is an asshole who refuses to listen and outright undermines Leo’s orders. Yeah, Raph is a real jerk during this season. FYI. When Leo shows hesitance about his plan, Splinter tells him of his final confrontation against his rival Oroku Saki, aka The Shredder. It ended in his wife being killed, his house burning down, and his infant daughter nowhere to be found. Well, that won’t be important in any way, shape, or form later! The point being that he lost everything, but gained the boys, easing Leo’s worries about how much is riding on the plan.

So yeah the boys crash the van, Snake gets mutated, the boys break in, fight some guards, and Mikey proves that he isn’t crazy about the aliens.. and then trips an alarm. Smooth Mikey, smooth. They find the captives, that being this version of April O’Neil and her scientist father. Now in most versions, April is an adult woman. Here? She is aged down and is around sixteen years old. We’ll talk more about that later. The bad guys, aka The Kraang, take the captives away and as the boys give chase,t hey are confronted by the mutant Snake... who is a weed monster. Hey, that’s breaking supervillain rules writers! If you have an evil sounding name, that’s what you turn into! Donnie is sent to rescue the O’Neil’s as the other three face Snakeweed... Mikey’s idea, not mine.

The boys eventually defeat Snake via Leo’s direction and mass electrocution while Donnie is able to rescue April, but her father is taken away. April plans to find him however, no matter what it takes with the boys promising to help in whatever way they can. Once home, Leo finds out the complex reasoning for why he was named the leader over everyone else... because he asked. Ming-boggling, right? Well there is actually another reason, but we’ll talk about this in S4. The boys also made the news as their shruriken got found, but come on, what could one tiny news story do that would be bad? Well... being seen by your master’s worst enemy and re-igniting his lust for vengeance might count! Woopsie!

Overall, a solid two parter. It establishes the characters well, has fun fight scenes, the animation is a little dated now but still pretty good, the dialogue is funny, and it does a good job setting up future plotlines while fulfilling it’s own plot. It started 2k12 off on the right foot and was still enjoyable over five years since it’s initial premiere.

The Beginning (Episodes 3-8)

The episodes following the premiere create a steady flow of creating the status quo. You have episodes like Turtle Temper, Metalhead, and Monkey Brains (kinda) that have the boys dealing with the Kraang’s Plan of the Week as they continue their mutagen experiments. It helps with character development and some minor plot progression, such as Raph learning how dangerous his anger can be and Donnie learning to rely on his instincts rather than on his mind 100% of the time. Some are going to want me to comment on the shipping stuff, But I’m gonna save that for later. The biggest issue with these episodes, aside from Monkey Brains, is the Kraang. They are not interesting as villains at all. As great a VA as Nolan North is, the Kraang’s way of talking just gets... annoying. It doesn't help that the threat ultimately becomes either an accidental mutant or Donnie’s robot... well okay a Kraang possessed the later, but it shows that those are more interesting villains than the Kraang themselves and they exist mroe to just have an excuse for a plot. It’s really irking after awhile.

As far as plot goes, it’s mostly your usual ‘Monster of the Week’ stuff. But it has some small things that have a larger impact later. For one, in Monkey Brains, April begins to tap into what looks like some strong emphatic abilities. More on this next season. But due to this, Splinter decides to take April on as a student and train her to be a kunoichi (a female ninja). This will be the largest part of her character for the remainder of the series. April herself... is not utilized as well as she could have been in these early episodes. She’s described as the boys guide to the outside world, and she does serve that in some respects. For example, introducing Mikey to social media in New Friend, Old Enemy to let him make friends without exposing his mutant identity. And in Never Say Xever she takes them to a blind man’s shop so that they can actually experience life topside for once. The issue is we never see April establish bonds with the boys or Splinter after her introduction. In New Friend, Old Enemy she just acts like she’s been friends with the guys for awhile and after showing Mikey the net, doesn’t appear or is even mentioned in the episode again. She disappears after her importance in Metalhead as well, but she is given mroe to work with there at least. I glossed over this when I was watching the show and April does get mroe time with the guys, her relationship with Splinter being one of my favorites. Still, they didn’t do a lot with having April become part of the group or really act on her role as their ‘guide’ and I feel they just wanted to ignore it to get to the other stuff. Which is just a bummer.

So you’re probably wondering about Shredder stuff, right? Well thankfully the Foot Episodes are also the most plot relevant episodes. It starts with New Friend, Old Enemy where Shredder arrives in New York and assigns one of his lieutenants, a famous martial artist named Chris Bradford, to find out about Splinter. The Foot end up encountering the Turtles, with Bradford later using this to manipulate Mikey after accidentally becoming online friends with him. He captures him and use shim as bait to lure out the other three and then follow them to where Splinter is hiding. It fails with the boys using their knowledge of the sewers to literally wash Bradford and his partner, Xever, away. Along with the dangers of meeting people you don’t really know on social media, the episode presents a very unique lesson. In a fight for your life, screw fairness, You fight by any means necessary to stay alive, including fighting dirty. Most shows emphasize on being fair, but this one actually acknowledges that if your life is on the line, you do what it takes to get out alive. It’s a unique message for a kids show and one that I really appreciate.

Next is Never Say Xever where Xever gets to lead the charge. After the boys track down the two and get beat up, Xever receives inlet from the Purple Dragons, who int his version are pretty much a trio of teen thugs. The Turtles fought them off earlier at the shop April took them to, with Leo sparing the leader as an act of mercy. Something that Raph takes umbridge with... as he does with most anything that Leo does in the first half of the series. It’s no surprise that Leo and Raph butt heads, as they do in most series, and it follows their respective arcs. Leo having to deal with being leader as well as realizing that it’s much more pressuring and unforgiving than he thought, while Raph act son his jealousy that Leo got the position even though he’s the better fighter and therefore questioning Leo’s orders or outright just being an asshole for no good reason. But after the shop owner is kidnapped to lure the Turtles out, Leo’s act of mercy ends up saving them as the lead Dragon repays the favor by throwing him back his discarded sword. Which Leo uses to break a water tower to wash the bad guys away again. Angered, The Shredder decides to handle the Turtles himself.

The episodes do a good job in establishing a solid status quo. Bad guy does a thing, one character has their B-Plot to deal with, there’s a clash, the plots intertwine, bad guy gets defeated, and the lesson of the day is learned. A simple routine, but it works here. Plus we get plenty of character establishment and moments which makes you care about them. For example even though Raph is a massive jerk, the end of New Friend, Old Enemy has his comfort Mikey after the deceit and have him see that he’s a good kid who simply got duped as anyone else would. With this being after Raph mocked him wanting to make friends throughout the episode, it helped show that he does have a caring side. Leo frequently has issues with being a leader, such as dealing with Raph and moments like in ITHNiBS where the guys outright refuse to listen to him when he tries to remind them that they’re grounded. Even Splinter has a lot of moments, being a stern but fair parental figure and wise mentor, but is also snarky as Hell. We also see hints to how much the past has affected him, like after April agrees to undergo kunoichi training and leaves the dojo, there’s just a brief moment where he looks down with a forlorn expression. As though wishing that he was telling this to his own MIA daughter. It’s so subtle, but it speaks volumes about his emotional state.

The characters are ultimately what makes these episodes works and what I would say is the strongest part of the series. You are likely going to relate to or like someone from this show and their progression. But now that we have a fully formed status quo, it’s time to shake it up a little bit and have the Turtles experience their first hard dose of reality.

The Escalation (Epsidoes 9-13)

Episode 9 begins as a typical ‘Mutant of the Week’ plot with the guys trying to catch a pigeon mutant that was after April. But when they do, they discover that he was simply trying to deliver a message... from her father. The message warns her to get out of the city due to a mutagen bomb, but she refuses to leave without him. As such,t he Turtles... somehow... find where Mr. O’Neil is and try to save him. While they get him out of the cell and get the location of the bomb, Mr. O’Neil sacrifices himself when the Kraang outnumber them so that the boys can protect April. All while poor April can only watch, helpless to do anything. Ouch...

The Turtles can only go to where the bomb is to disarm it, but things get further complicated when Bradford and Xever attack, wanting payback from before. Fortunately Donnie disarms the bomb and the four corner the two, but Bradford refuse sot go down quietly and stabs the bomb, but all it does is mutate himself and Xever. But ti also washes them away.... again. I should also point out that this point,t he Turtles have gotten incredibly over-confident since they’ve beaten every bad guy so far, feeling unstoppable. So then... Shredder arrives. Yep. And he kicks their shells HARD. Liek he holds no punches, he easily over-powers all four of them and almost stabs Leo int he head. The only reason that they escape is Shredder getting distracted by his now mutated lieutenants. But the boys retreat, badly beaten up and completely demoralized.

The next episode focuses on the fallout. The four are mostly feeling better, but their fears are being escalated by, of all people, Splinter. This is due to the boys nearly getting killed by his long-time rival re-igniting his own trauma and having nightmares over losing them, causing him to again keep them in the sewers and be far more harsh with his training. The only one doing moderately well is April, who gets intel about the Foot planning to destroy the sewers. The Turtles try to stop it, but get pounded by Bradford, who is now a giant dog mutant named Dogpound. This forces April to get the inlet herself, but she gets caught an captured by the Foot. This further brings Leo down, but to his surprise Raph actually encourages him to pull himself together and lead the team. The Turtles manage to both save April and stop the Foot from destroying the sewers with Splinter apologizing for allowing his fears to affect both himself and his sons. Overall, a solid pair of episodes that bring the boys down a bit, finally has all the plots meet somewhere, and deliver a strong message about not letting fear control you or the others around you.

After a filler episode where the only importance is Shredder forcibly recruiting Stockman to his forces, we get some more Kraang stuff with Episode 12. Where we actually show them being dangerous. Shocker, right?! It also introduces us to long-time supporting character within the franchise Leatherhead. Here he is an alligator mutant who the Kraang experimented on and it causes him to have violent fits of rage if he so much as hears the word ‘Kraang’. The Turtles end up saving him when the Kraang try to re-capture him, but find his angry bursts, well... dangerous. But Mikey is able to befriend him and it becomes more clear that LH is actually a rather intelligent, good-hearted mutant who has been put through Hell. He gets run off by Splinter though when one of his trauma-induced bursts causes him to attack the boys, forcing the rat master to intervene. Mikey, and by proxy the other three, give chase to an old subway car where LH reveals how the Kraang took him to their home, Dimension X, and experimented on him. He escaped and also took their Power Cell, cutting them off form Dimension X, in hopes of saving humanity from them. The Kraang want it back and act like a zombie swarm as they break through the car. LH fights them off, leaving the Power Cell in the Turtles care.

While Episode 11 sucks (to put it simply Leo and Raph are overbearing assholes while Donnie and Mikey are just made to be as weak as possible), the other three do a good job at making the villains more solid threats. Shredder was built up as intimidating and powerful, and boy did he deliver. The Turtles face their first major loss and have to deal with the fallout, Leo especially dealing with his first real failure as a leader. Even the Kraang come off as a scarier hivemind and we get mroe stuff on them, like Dimension X and their plans to mutate the Earth. Add that with a strong supporting character like Leatherhead, who is understandably traumatized but is an intelligent being who is trying to prevent others form suffering like him. and it helps make some strong episodes.

The first half of the season concludes with the 13th episodes... that aired as the 14th for some reason. But I’m going in order of my DVD’s and this was after Episode 12, so it’s what I’m going with. It both concludes a lot and opens up a lot for the future. The episode I am talking about is, of course New Girl in Town.

The Coolest Uncles Alive

Summary: In which one twin wanted to grow up to be a zookeeper and the other nearly got eaten by a large feline. Harry and Cisco didn’t have high hopes for their futures. Words: 1756 A/N: Forgive me for changing the canon. But this is fanfiction? And the show itself doesn't exactly follow the comics to a tee.

Cisco spread his arms. “Behold! Welcome to the Zoo. Lions, Tigers, and Bears oh my!”

Harry huffed in amusement beside him. Cisco lifted one of the twins from his shoulders to the ground. Avery immediately attached to Cisco’s leg. Harry crossed his arms in disapproval. Beside him, Joseph giggled at his facial expression. They were watching the mischievous pair so WestAllen could have a second honeymoon. At the end of the day, Cisco and Harry would probably need a second honeymoon. Cisco was glad neither of them could accidentally get pregnant, not that they wouldn’t be excessively careful.

“Avery Francis West-Allen,” Harry said, cool as a cucumber, “let of your godfather’s leg.”

Avery whined. Joey ignored the scene and started punching the air. He almost punched someone passing by, so Harry held him still.

“Avery. Remember you're a big boy now,” Cisco admonished.

He whined again but detached. He restlessly jumped around, his tutu bouncing. The West-Allens hadn't known what the gender of their other baby would be, so Harry gifted them some of Jesse’s old clothes. Avery was also wearing a “Daddy’s little princess” shirt. They couldn't figure out how Avery found them. No one was going to police a four-year-old child on what to wear, though. Or anyone for that matter, who needed enforced gender roles? The shirt wasn’t surprising, since Avery aggressively idolized regal female characters, especially Moana, Shuri, Mulan, and Diana Prince. Cisco didn’t know if Avery had a single clue about ballet.

Joey had nicked Avery’s favorite T-shirt of the Ninja turtle Donatello. Joey lived to annoy his sibling.

They were almost identical at first glance. But Joey had a pointier nose and green eyes. Avery’s eyes leaned more toward brown, and his nose was set wider. The rest of his face had a stronger resemblance to Barry, though it was hard to tell past the lingering baby-fat, with a round chin and angular cheekbones.

“Can we visit elephants?” Joey asked. Except it sounded like ellie-pants.

Avery protested, “I want to see the caramels!”

“Camels,” Harry said.

“Campbell’s,” Avery tried to mimic. Harry shrugged and gave up.

“We’ll get to those both,” Cisco promised.

They passed monkeys, gorillas, elephants, bears, zebras, camels and crocodiles. When they reached the petting zoo, Joey tugged on Cisco’s shirt hem.

“Are the animals sad all locked up?”

Cisco tapped his head and thought out his answer. “Well, they're well fed, with easy access to medicine. Room to roam and places to hide. Plus they're safe from meanies who'd hurt or sell them.”

Joey blinked a few times and smiled. “That's good.”

Joey moved on to the petting zoo, Avery skipping merrily behind him. They had fun, while Harry laughed at Cisco getting chased around by a goat. He fell on his ass, and soon all the children were guffawing with delight. He dusted himself off.

“I am done with the zoo,” Cisco complained. Harry fixed his curls and pecked him on the lips.

“Yuck kissy face!” Avery shouted. Harry grabbed at him, but he quickly dodged. Joey bolted after him. Cisco and Harry trudged after them into the gift shop.

They found that Joey had already found a stuffed elephant. It was roughly the size of his body. Harry was indulgent and brought it to the counter without question. Along with wolf ears. Avery wanted two pairs of cat ears and a little zookeeper outfit. Cisco lifted it with a raised eyebrow.

“I is gonna be the best a minimal - I mean, animal keeper when I is big,” Avery lisped.

“I am,” Harry corrected gently. His mouth tilted toward a frown.

“You’re already big and a scientist,” Avery said, placing his hands on his hips. Harry didn't know why he tried.

“Are you sure you don't want to be a scientist too? Maybe a reporter? Or an astronaut?”

Avery stared at him expressionless. He stated slowly like Cisco was extra dumb, “I wanna. Be a. Zoo. Keeper.”

Cisco nodded. “Okay, okay. Nothing wrong with that.”

Harry ushered everyone out of the store. Once outside, Joey put his wolf ears on. He cupped his hands around his mouth and howled. Harry shook his head. He attempted to push the elephant off on Cisco. He held up a hand.

“You bought it, you carry it.”

Avery put on the cat ears and handed a pair to Harry. He sighed unhappily but slipped them on. Cisco snorted into his hand, and Harry flicked his ear.

They came up on the cheetahs. The pair of spotted cats watched them. Cisco loosed a breathy “hah-hah” at the information plate. The male was named Kitty Flash, the female ironically was Diana the Wonder-Cat. Joey pointed with his mouth open. “It's like Duma!”

Harry gave Cisco a look, and Cisco scratched the back of his neck. It was a fine film for kids, with his supervision. Joey may have stayed up too late and had too much sugar, who was to know. Avery had fallen asleep twenty minutes in. Cisco pushed his curls out of his face, long and wild as they were. They just fell back in place.

Avery argued, “No, no they're like Fuli from the Lion Guard!”

“That show sucks,” Joey grumped.

“Your face sucks Jojo!”

“That's enough,” Harry said firmly.

The twins were quiet but continued to glower at each other. Cisco had to intervene before they started a poking war or something. He bundled his hair and pulled it over the front of one shoulder. Harry had convinced him a while ago to let it grow out more. He was beginning to doubt the wisdom in catering to his husband’s obsession.

“The cheetah is the fastest land animal, aside from your dad. Their enlarged hearts and lungs help them,” Cisco informed them. He was just summarizing the name plate. “And they use their tails to make sharp turns.”

Their attention turned on him. They looked eager for more. Cisco floundered. He didn’t actually know a lot about cheetahs. Luckily, Harry came to his rescue.

“Cheetahs are naturally nervous and shy -”

“Like that kid Billy in our class?”

“Sure. They will introduce them to a dog as a companion at a young age. The cheetah reads their vibe to know how to behave.”

Avery touched his cat ears. “I'm a cheetah now! Can I get a puppy?”

Cisco shared a concerned look with Harry. Then he said, “That’s a question for your parents kiddo.”

“My birthday is soon,” Avery whispered excitedly.

“Our birthday. Our puppy,” Joey chimed in.

“Wazzat? I do not talk to dummies who say lion guard sucks.”

He turned away to watch the cheetahs. Joey stuck his tongue out. One of the cats had come rather close. It sat down, ears flicking. Avery waved. He pointed his finger and tried to count the spots. The wind picked up suddenly. Cisco wrestled his hair into a ponytail. He always kept the bands in his pockets. Harry palm pressed to the back of his neck. He gestured at the stand selling various sweet treats.

“Who wants ice cream?” Cisco asked.

“Mommy sayed I can't eat ice cream. Cos it came back up and daddy didn’t like wearing it,” Avery said absently, still counting the spots. “Eleven… twelve… wait what’s after twelve?” The cheetah licked its paw and swiped over its ear. Avery gave up counting and imitated the action.

“Cotton candy then. Both are right past the enclosure.”

“Race me,” Joey said. “If you win you don't gotta speak to me, if I win then you gotta.”

Cisco wasn't sure he was a fan of that wager. But at least it might mean less bickering in the car. He doubted Avery could hold out that long though.

“Get ready to lose to Josie the fastest cheetah ever!”

Joey scoffed, “That sounds like a girl name.”

“Cos it is, genius.”

Joey nodded sagely. “I see.”

They got into position. Cisco and Harry followed sedately as they ran off on their tiny legs. Joey stumbled halfway there, and Avery won. Cisco bought his cotton candy and strawberry ice cream for Joey. By the end, Joey's face was covered in smudges of ice cream.

“You were supposed to eat that, not wear it,” Harry admonished. Joey giggled and wiped some onto Harry’s nose. Cisco smirked. When the kids weren't looking, he licked it off.

Meanwhile, Avery managed to get cotton puffs in his hair. Joey had disappeared in the blink of an eye. Cisco and Harry glared at Avery questioningly, as though he vanished his brother by sheer force of will.

He said in a small voice, “Joey want to be friends with the Fulis.”

Cisco and Harry had never ran so fast in their lives. They almost forgot to grab Avery. Harry carried him parallel to the ground. He wrapped himself around Harry’s leg when they reached the enclosure. Cisco gasped and covered his mouth at the sight. Harry just face-palmed.

Cisco uttered, “Joseph Henry West-Allen. If the cats don't get him, I will.”

“I'm too old for this.”

By some unexpected willfulness, Joey had found his way into the cheetah enclosure. He was creeping toward a sleeping cat. The other one was watching him like a hawk. Its tail whipped side to side. Unlike dogs, that was not a friendly gesture.

“Shit, shit, satan damned hell,” Cisco shouted. Harry groaned in agreement, not lifting his head. Several parents and assorted guardians shot him scandalized looks. He didn't care. There was nothing else for it. He breached right in front of the cheetah preparing to pounce. He was greeted with semi-retractable claws in his shoulders. Cisco wasn’t braced for the pure force, knocking him to the ground. However, it seemed to decide he was too big of a fish to fry. It collapsed beside him and started purring. He thanked the speed force and grabbed up Joey, kicking and screaming.

Cisco swore he’d buy the twins a puppy if they kept the incident quiet. Avery managed to barter an additional kitten out of him. Avery leapt into his arms and hugged him. Joey copied him, but with Harry, who was barely able to balance him. Joey gave Harry a kiss on his chin with the “mwah” sound effect.

“Did this make you change your mind about kids?” Harry asked.

“Nope. Not at all, no.”

“Good,” Harry said. “Keeping up with you is challenge enough, sweetheart.”

Cisco threaded their fingers. Harry smiled fondly and kissed his cheek.

Joey added emphatically, “But you're the coolest uncles in the world.”
