Six Plays by Alan Bennett: Doris and Doreen (1.2, LWT, 1978)
"I still wonder about Mrs. Henstridge. She did have a daughter, doesn't she? She was in an accident. Or did she get married? I know the hat came round."
"They wouldn't send the hat round for a daughter, her daughter never worked here."
"They send the hat round for famine victims, and they don't work here."
"They send the hat round for all sorts these days. I hope they send the hat round for me when my time comes. If it isn't a wedding, it's a famine. Earthquakes practically twice a week these days. Never stops. Ethiopia, what have we got to do with Ethiopia?"
"I just have this feeling I chipped in for a spread."
#doris and doreen#six plays by alan bennett#alan bennett#single play#1978#lwt#classic tv#stephen frears#prunella scales#patricia routledge#pete postlethwaite#joan sanderson#george fenton#tony wharmby#this second play in the series is much more traditionally theatrical than the first; essentially a two hander confined to a single studio#set‚ the action concerns the titular characters played by Scales and Routledge‚ mid level filing clerks in an unspecified national company‚#who spend their days reading newspapers and making passive aggressive digs at one another rather than work on the forms they so abhor#it's a character piece‚ with sparkling dialogue brought beautifully to life by two actors that Bennett would work with on stage and screen#repeatedly (Routledge in particular became a familiar collaborator and was an intrinsic part of what made Talking Heads so successful)#Doris is a vaguely bitter single woman who cares for an ailing mother while Doreen is a comic grotesque‚ a vapid married woman who chatters#incessantly about forced rhubarb and the lives and loves of colleagues she barely knows; for all that‚ the two are very similar in some#aspects of disposition‚ particularly in their middle class snobbery and their disinterested attitude to their work. the looming spectre of#a potential interloper in the form of a new boss (part of dreaded staff shake ups) is treated with near gothic levels of horror and#paranoia (with the film really leaning into those visuals for the rather hysteria tinged ending). it's a note of elevated style that's both#clever and quite witty but i still think this works best when it's quietly deconstructing these two frustrated characters as inflated#clerks with delusions of importance. endlessly tripping off long monologues about particular paperwork or obsolete filing systems#or sniping among themselves about best practices and working to rule; underneath the breezy comedy there's very little sympathy or#compassion in Bennett's piece (even the late Pete Postlethwaite's union minded ancillary worker is depicted as a crude bore and a hypocrite#undeniably a funny play and as sharply written as any of the playwrights works‚ but it lacks the heart that furnishes his best scripts#also the score is weirdly obtrusive whenever it kicks in‚ often playing over lines of dialogue as tho poorly mixed in

Those in italics have five or more pieces of usable visual, written, or audio propaganda already. If you have any visuals like photos or videos, or if you have something to say in words, submit it to this blog before round one begins on June 25th!
If you don't see a name you submitted here, it's because most or all of their career was as a child/they were too young for the cutoff, their career was almost entirely after 1979, or music was something they only dabbled in and are hardly known for. There are quite a few ladies on the list whose primary career wasn't "recording artist" or "live musician," but released several albums or were in musical theater, so they've been accepted.

Hi is it okay if you write a story about baby branch and Floyd
It sure is 😊
Remember (a Trolls fanfic)
Dear Diary,
It’s been a pretty quiet evening at home so far, and I guess there’s a few reasons for that. For one, I guess it’s no secret that I’m the quietest among my brothers (they say I should assert myself more, but I find that I can’t - it’s just the way I am 0.0). Also, my older brothers aren’t here at the moment, and the bro that IS here is sleeping on my lap (it’s a little hard to write right now, but I can manage). I’m guessing you’re probably wondering where exactly my older brothers are. Well, John Dory is out running some errands with Grandma, so they’re hitting the grocery store and a few other places (plus, JD DID say he was going to try and get supplies for some new costume ideas he has planned for us and our band, BroZone).
Spruce is out on a date. He ran another one of his competitions, and the winner this time around is a girl named Doreen. I’ve seen her around town a bit, and she seemed very excited to be able to be with him. As for Spruce… I don’t think I could really say the same :( But, regardless, they were heading out to Senior Frosty’s. A lot of us like to go down there for some sweet treats (personally, I think Grandma’s stuff is the best, but they’re okay too ^_^). Spruce’s favorite is the Tropical Sunset sundae, which is an ice cream that I think is made from vanilla, with some kind of fruity syrup and chunks of pineapple on top. It sounds pretty tasty, but my personal preference is the strawberry delight (an underrated flavor, but delicious nonetheless!)
Clay headed off to another one of his sad-book club meetings. He’s sorta told me about them before, but I’m a little nervous to go to one, if I’m being honest. If it’s about sad books like he says, I’m probably gonna be in tears the whole time! I guess I’ll just have to make sure that I pack a lot of tissues when I do get the chance to accompany him :)
That leaves me and Branch, like I mentioned before. We had some fun with all kinds of activities around the house.
We frosted some sugar cookies that Grandma had baked earlier in the day (Branch got a little messy with the decorating, but he didn’t mind). We played some games (the usual - hide-and-seek, tag… freeze tag) and sang some of our band’s songs together. I’m very proud of him. Even though he’s only a couple years old, he’s got a great falsetto going. Golden! I can tell he’s going to be an amazing singer one day, and I can’t wait for him to start performing with us. John Dory thinks he’s ready, too. A few days ago, he actually suggested that we should start arranging for our first tour. Spruce and Clay agreed, and it’s going to be so exciting!
As Floyd tapped his pencil to his chin, pondering what to write down next, the light weight on his lap began to shift. He immediately put his journal down, and watched admiringly as Branch cutely yawned and stretched.
“Hey, Branch,” he cooed softly, stroking his brother’s delicate little cheek. “Did you have a good nap?”
The baby blinked up at him, rubbing the sleep out of his large blue eyes and grinning his sweet little one-toothed grin. “Uh-huh!”
Floyd chuckled and ruffled his rich blue hair. “That’s good.”
“What did you do, Floyd?” the small Troll asked curiously.
“Oh, I was just writing in my journal,” he said, showing him the book that he’d placed at his side.
“Ohhh,” Branch mused, cocking his head. “Can I see it?”
“Sure thing,” Floyd replied fondly, opening it up and allowing Branch to flip through the pages.
“I write all kinds of things in here,” the magenta-haired Troll explained while the baby stared in wonder. “Ideas, stories, wishes… but do you know what my favorite thing to write about is?”
“What?” Branch asked, his eyes twinkling with interest.
“All the stuff I do with you, and our brothers.”
“Wow! Really?”
“Definitely,” Floyd answered. “That way, when we want to remember something special, it’ll all be right here.” He gave him a little side hug that Branch happily leaned into with a giggle. Then, the little blue Trolling thought of something else.
“Do you write songs in there, too?”
Floyd nodded. “Yeah, I do.” Then he smirked. “But you know, I’ve been having a little trouble trying to finish the one I’ve been working on. Do you want to help me?”
His baby brother’s face lit up. “Yeah!”
And, as he and Branch made another cherished memory - harmonizing together and creating wonderful new melodies - Floyd made sure to recall every little detail of their experience so, in that way, he could notate it in his journal for them to always remember.

Nathan and Seth:
3. a headcanon that canon doesn't disprove
Skwisgaar and Doreen McClean
7. a pre-canon headcanon
8. a post-canon headcanon
Dealer's Choice
18. favorite should have been canon relationship
Nathan: I'd argue that the canon actually proves that he's autistic, but since it's not confirmed in the show I suppose it's still a headcanon.
Seth: That man is genuinely in love with his wife.
Skwisgaar: He was celebrated as a child prodigy in his hometown, but his mother never heard him play. She was always too "busy" to attend his recitals.
Dory: She met her lawyer husband when she was getting her name changed. He wasn't working with her directly, but they ran into each other at the firm.
Dealer's Choice:
I can't put my own bias aside. Magnus and Charles being bitter exes would have been great.

Hauntology week 13? shadow of the absent body
This week in Hauntology, we watched Judith Butler make an argument about Doris Salcedo's exhibit Shadow of the Absent Body. Butler begins the talk by discussing how there is a difference between "counting the dead" and "making the dead count". Individuals who have suffered violent deaths in genocides are often "summed" up as death tolls. But the value of life is incalculable and counting does not equal morning. Butler lets us know that justice is the measure of the incalculable. Salcedo's art is and is not, the body, the violence and the memorial.
One of the exhibits within Shadows of the Absent Body features blouses. The blouses are constructed of needles/ sharp objects. The empty form of the blouses point to the absent body. They become animated this way. They are haunting distortions of the ordinary. Salcedo begins most of her works from nothing. She relates to the victims she memorializes through her artistic process. These victims are stripped of everything. Often even their lives. Salcedo and her team painstakingly create their work with no templates.
Butler ends their speech by saying, "The object bear the untellable, the incalculable, in material form. They obstruct oblivion and bear it's force.". <- god damn. These objects that Salcedo has created establish grievability where governments have failed.
How does Salcedo's work relate to my own? yikes. Ill let you know when Judith Butler can talk about my work for 90 minutes. But for real - how privileged am I to not have to make this sort of work. I watched an interview with Salcedo where someone asked how she can manage the grief that she must encounter in her work. Salcedo responded by saying that she does not manage it. Managing it implies putting it aside. She puts it in the center of her life. Otherwise would feel immoral, to Salcedo. She says that if we were all paying attention, then these things would not be happening. These artists (I can name Doreen Garner in this moment) who do "heavy" work impress me so much. What can I offer in the context of this immeasurable work and drive?
Heres a picture of my painting that i just cut up.
AAAAAND a pic of my dog in the studio cuz why not?

Indigo calls Dorian by his full name in Serious Moments, any other time, she calls him any other variation of it (and sometimes something totally unrelated to his name). So far the list of names is like - D, Dor, Dori, Rian, DA, Aleks, Sander, Scruffy, Grumpy, Sunshine, Pup, Doreen, Darcy, Meryl
She comes from a large family of nicknamers and tends to easily use endearments or nicknames with people, even if she doesn't know them too well.
On the other hand, Dorian calls her Indi when he's being serious or annoyed, and Indigo in general.

Thank you to the person/people who have been submitting so much propaganda recently! I appreciate the enthusiasm and it makes the tournament so much better to have more visuals of the nominees. Here's the updated list of those that have neither visual nor written (nor audio) propaganda:
Bessie Jones
Barbara Keith
Jennifer Warnes
Written propaganda is well and good, and it really gives some good reasons why a particular nominee is so wonderful, but in a contest about looks, it helps that we can see more of a person! The following nominees have WRITTEN propaganda, but NO VISUAL propaganda:
Shirley Bassey
Ivy Benson
Diahann Carroll
Patsy Cline
Rosemary Clooney
Doris Day
Sandy Denny
Maureen Evans
Annie Haslam
Mary Hopkin
Betty Hutton
Sonja Kristina
Peggy Lee
Lulu
Anni-Frid Lyngstad
Liza Minnelli
Stevie Nicks
Virginia O'Brien
Anna Russell
Melanie Safka
Doreen Shaffer
Patti Smith
Barbra Streisand
Don't feel pressured to submit for these ladies, but they're the most in need of visuals right now. Of course, feel free to submit more written propaganda, if you want, it's always fun! Get in your propaganda by June 25th at midnight PST to have it included in the post!

▸doreen ‘dori’ henderson
dori henderson was a bit of a loner. she didn’t have the group of friends her twin brother did; though the boys didn’t mind hanging out with her, even if they did complain about her being taller than them all the way up to freshman year. speaking of school, she stuck to herself; a total loner after best friend lenny cameron got popular with ‘it crew’ of hawkins’ middle school’s soccer team. dori was little more than acquaintances with the students in her art club and the definitive target of hawkins middle’s bullies - and lenny’s new besties - lori miller and tricia allan, who’d call her ‘kitty’ and accuse her of having a ‘cat face’.
worst of all was the secret she kept: her attraction to girls that would shatter her small town life into a million pieces. she keeps her head down, she tries her hardest not to stare at the pretty pretty girls in her classes. that is, until, mike wheeler discovers a girl in the woods the same night will goes missing.
eleven is like nobody dori has ever met and dori trips head over heels immediately and the feeling only grows the more el is around; it’s just a shame she’s so caught up with mike and dori is left to pine in secret alongside will byers and his infatuation for his best friend.
or, at least, that’s the plan until dori proposes they ‘fake date’ to get mike and el’s respective attention.

We met a part in therapy today that is represented by a door. Someone asked how they felt about the name Dorian (get it??) and was quite firmly told no. It's not Doreen, Doris or Adora, either. Just door part.
That was the only funny thing about the session. Because I was listening and heard how they feel about me. He's a fucking monster.
Deidre says I'm not. She says, quite proudly, that I'm our containerized and rejected self-hatred. As if that's better? 🤨

No one knew his name.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, there were stories of an unknown black sailor “who stood on the hot decks of his battleship and directed the fighting.” "This mess attendant, 'who never before had fired a gun,' the story went, 'manned a machine gun on the bridge until his ammunition was exhausted,'" according to Navy Times. Even after the Navy released its list of commendations for heroism at Pearl Harbor, the black sailor still was unnamed. But, when the unnamed sailor's mother heard the news of the black hero at Pearl Harbor, she knew right away, saying “That’s got to be [my son] they talking about.” T. Michael Parrish, a historian and professor at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, said: "The Navy did not even want to release his name. But the African American press, particularly the Pittsburgh Courier, got a hold of it and went to members of Congress who depended upon black votes in the North to put pressure on the Navy Department to release [his] name." Today, 78 years later, the name of that unknown black sailor will now grace a $12.5 billion aircraft carrier in his honor. "In a Martin Luther King Day Jr. ceremony last month at Pearl Harbor . . . Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly announced that a future . . . aircraft carrier will bear [the name of Doris Miller]," according to NBC News. "The U.S. Navy named an aircraft carrier in honor of an African American for the first time," according to USA Today. The Peace Page, since it first began, has shared several stories about Doris Miller, most notably how he never received the Medal of Honor, but this is a new chapter in his story and we are glad to share it during Black History Month. "Miller, known to many as 'Dorie,' was born on October 12, 1919, during the darkest days of the lynching epidemic that blighted the South in the 20th century’s first decades. Only three years before Miller was born, his hometown of Waco became the scene of one of the most brutal lynchings on record when 17-year-old Jesse Washington was burned alive on the lawn of the city hall," according to Navy Times. As previously shared on the Peace Page, after dropping out of high school to help support his family, he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 19 when he couldn't find work. According to the Navy Times, "At that time, black men serving in the Navy were not only ineligible for promotion, they were consigned to the lowly messman branch, where they were tasked with making the beds and shining the shoes of their white officers and waiting on them in the officers’ mess." "As one of Miller’s fellow messmen said, they were merely 'seagoing bellhops, chambermaids, and dishwashers.' "By regulation, they could not be trained in or assigned to any other specialty, such as signals, engineering, or gunnery. Their battle station was below decks in the 'hole' or magazine, where they passed ammunition up to the gunners. "They were not even allowed to wear buttons marked with the Navy’s insignia, an anchor entwined with a chain, and had to wear plain buttons instead. "Miller himself stated that 'when the Japanese bombers attacked my ship at Pearl Harbor I forgot all about the fact that I and other Negroes can be only messmen in the Navy and are not taught how to man an antiaircraft gun.'" Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said last month that Miller "had just finished serving breakfast . . . All African Americans were below deck, assigned as cooks or personal servants to white officers." "The Navy relegated black sailors to the worst kinds of duty, the lowest grades and the least respected. They were relegated to the kitchens, to cleaning and swabbing the deck, to being abused and mistreated," according to Parrish, who is also co-author of "Doris Miller, Pearl Harbor, and the Birth of the Civil Rights Movement.” "Doris Miller was the son of a sharecropper and a descendant of slaves," Modly said at the ceremony at Pearl Harbor. "He was not given the same opportunities that men of a different color were given to serve this country. But on Dec. 7, 1941, he would not be defined by the prejudice of other people." After manning the gun that fateful day, Miller also helped move injured sailors off the ship and to safety," according to NBC News. "Modly, who stressed the racism black sailors faced at the time in the country and in the Navy, said: 'When the order came to abandon the ship, he stayed and helped. He was one of the last three sailors to leave the USS West Virginia.'" Although bills were introduced to award Miller the Medal of Honor, "the Chairman of Naval Affairs, averred that Miller’s deeds were not deserving of the nation’s highest award for valor," according to Navy Times. Miller instead received the Navy Cross — at the time, the third-highest Navy award for gallantry during combat. It was the first such medal ever awarded to a black sailor. "Both at the time and since, numerous historians and political leaders have argued that gallant as were the sacrifices of the 16 men — all of them white and most officers and petty officers — who were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions that day, Dorie Miller’s exploits were at least of equal distinction, and all the more to be honored because of the oppressive racial stigma under which he performed so heroically," according to Navy Times. Tragically, Miller did not survive the war. Miller died just two years after his act of heroism, perishing with more than 645 other men aboard the USS Liscome Bay when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo in the Pacific in 1943. "Nearly 650 of the more than 900 sailors on board died when the ship sank, and Miller's body was never recovered," according to NPR. Miller was listed as “presumed dead” and after 365 days was reported as killed in action. "He was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart, among other honors." "Doris Miller’s death, however, was not in vain. The memory of his life has burned brightly as an example of how an underprivileged and oppressed young man from rural Texas can rise above poverty and racial discrimination — not only to display great courage, devotion, and patriotism, but to help alter the course of American history," according to writers Thomas W. Cutrer and T. Michael Parrish. "Doris Miller’s heroic actions at Pearl Harbor helped launch a revolution," according to Navy Times. In January 1944, less than two months after his death, the Navy opened a modest officer-training program at Camp Robert Smalls for black sailors, commissioning its first 13 black officers on March 17, 1944. "Miller’s heroism — and the legend it engendered — were directly responsible for helping to roll back the Navy’s policy of racial segregation and prejudice, and served as a powerful catalyst for the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s that brought an end to the worst of America’s racial intolerance," according to Cutrer and Parrish. "He deserves his niche in the pantheon of American heroes, for he provided an immeasurably important symbol for black Americans in their struggle for desegregation and equal opportunity — not only in the armed forces, but throughout the breadth of American society." Navy Acting Secretary Modly "said the USS Doris Miller will serve as a reminder of the nation's pursuit for justice and as a tribute to its namesake," according to USA Today. “In selecting this name, we honor the contributions of all our enlisted ranks, past and present, men and women, of every race, religion and background." "The launching of a new ship bearing Miller’s name is among ongoing efforts to cement his place in U.S. wartime history. Doreen Ravenscroft, executive director of the Cultural Arts of Waco, has been leading an effort for the past decade to build a memorial to Miller in his hometown," according to the Washington Post. Ravenscroft, according to the Post, said Miller is a hero worthy of international recognition: “He used his own instinct of survival to do what he thought he should do, and his instinct was to defend his country. The fact that he went beyond the call of duty, we need that today — doing that extra, doing more than what’s expected.” [Photo from Naval History and Heritage Command]
