How do you think NA productions assign which alt gets the taller boot? I thought it was whoever was the tallest out of their set (Cassie and Jana) but Aubrey is the shortest of the other alts and she has the taller boot

I wish I knew. At first we thought it might have to do something with the covers. Principal Aragon and Parr get double straps and Cleves has the tall boots. So the original theory was that whoever had two of those covers would get the taller boots. And Broadway sort of backed that with Nicole (A/C) and Keirsten (C/P).

But then the tours came and it seemed that it did change to whoever was the tallest because both Cassie and Jana got them. And then it changed again with the Broadway cast change as both Aubrey and Kristina have the double straps. Kristina does cover A/P and has mentioned she thinks thats the reason she got double, but Aubrey doesnt have any of those covers and is the shortest alt. So my guess is that the current system is to just mix things around like in the UK where they seem to have standarized boots for B/C/H/P but A/S still change between one and three straps with no apparent pattern.

I particularly don't care that much about it but I thought it was a lame joke in general. Like yay the devil who's been lowkey manipulating us this whole time is.... bad at sex. I guess.

But also i could be biased because i think this type of joke is generally not appealing to me. The only one i actually found funny was during Fantasy High Season 1 and the whole Johnny Spells doesn't fuck (and he's not contractually allowed to do so). That shit was pure gold.

i like the idea of multiple interpretations of what Haarlep says. That Haarlep is biased because they're an incubus so maybe they have highed standars, or that Raphael is intentionally "bad" at sex only with Haarlep, or that it makes sense that Raphael finished early because he is getting double the pleasure after all.

I think overall this is just a very silly thing to fight over.

For the anon who thinks that THE should be deleted because "it isn't exactly good timing" (???). You do realize that there are many countries at war rn but they do not get the same media coverage as the Ukraine war. By saying that it is sensible for them to delete THE because it isn't good timing, you are basically saying that the war in Ukraine is more important then the other wars (let's be honest, would you have said the same thing if there was no war in Ukraine?)... double standars

That's also true, we have at least 20 active armed conflicts at this very moment around the world (some that exist for years). I guess would be insensitive of me to say that some are better off than others, because people suffer for it regardless of the magnitude of the conflict.

I think both are right, but to be honest it's the first time I've seen someone talk about THE about this, I heard some talk about the heavy topic of war which is really hard to read, but not relating to Ukraine. Maybe some people shouldn't read it at all now, but that's up to each one, and how they feel about this.

no no twitter's accepted apologies before! well, one. it was george's, for saying several slurs and being straight up racist. both b slur and f slur along w/ several more. but now the clip's been completely scrubbed and you really have to dig to find it. they accepted that no hesitation but they have massive double standars :/

I mean, I guess my question for you is: do you want the clip to still be around? Like I get what you're saying about double standards and I more than agree - even in regards to people I adore sometimes - but I feel like bringing up his past that he's apologized for isn't any better. You're trying to fight fire with fire here. I get it if you don't accept his apology - obviously no one has to - but if your goal is forgiveness then the way they've allowed him to move on from his past mistakes isn't something to condemn, it's an example that should be followed in other, similar cases. I'm not gonna go digging for a clip from however many years ago, y'know? (Ps anon) honestly, SM just has a specific face type, especially for girls. All big 3 have a particular look they go for, but SM has always been down to essentially clone their idols. Jungwoo now looks eerily similar to TVXQ’s Junsu, and Taeyeon, Irene and Winter look so similar I’ve actually had to do a double take on more than one occasion. I guess they feel their idols will be more popular if they’re lookalikes of an already popular idol, but it’s kind of sad to be known as “that one kid who looks like X”. Kpop in general is getting much more ps heavy though, and they’re all chasing the same Korean beauty standards, so more and more idols have this standarized sort of look about them, both boys and girls. I miss the days when idols and actors were allowed to be a bit ugly so long as they were good performers. Now Korea is so appearance obsessed that we have bullshit such as people deciding some female idols have an “actress aura” just because they have a manufactured traditionally clean cut image and girl next door sort of prettyness (think Jisoo and Yoona). Idk how many times I’ve had to read that expression, and it makes 0 sense to me, because acting is a job, it literally does not matter what you look like on the regular. In Korea you give a female idol the eyes+nose+jaw ps combo, dye their hair black, give them a middle part and “no make-up make-up”, stick them in a modest white blazer and non-flashy cartier jewelry, and suddenly the entirety of naver is saying they should get cast in a drama 😭. Standarized good looks are a genuine problem in Korean entertainment.

I see Niall the same amount of times I see Louis on my dash (and I literally only follow 1 niall stan, the rest are louies and harries), and that’s below the amount of times I see Harry on my dash.

Literally if it wasn’t because I follow thedailypayne and have notifications on, that about 10 mutuals I have out of over 300 reblog about him and I go to their blogs, and that I follow ‘’thedailypayne’’ tag I literally wouldn’t know shit about him at all. If you go to thedailypayne and see their posts, the posts about Liam’s career barely have notes, but watch those that are about him talking about the other boys, or him singing 1D songs, those posts get like 2k notes in no time.

Islam Biasa-Biasa Aja

Suatu waktu aku dan temanku sedang ngobrol ngalor ngidul lalu merembetlah ke bahasan seseorang yang (katanya) fanatik dalam beragama, orang yang 'terlalu alim’. Yang jilbabnya lebar banget, gamisnya sampe nyeret tanah, pake cadar, kalau yang laki-laki celananya cingkrang, jenggotnya panjang, ga mendengarkan musik, dll. Temanku pun mengatakan,

"Aku gamau macem-macem ah. Pengen yang Islam biasa-biasa aja. Gausah ngikutin orang-orang fanatik kayak gitu"

Aku yang pada saat itu ilmunya masih dangkal dan masih ga bener (walau sekarang juga belum tentu bener) ikut mengiyakan perkataan temenku itu. 

Pikirku, yang penting jilbab menutupi dada, pake rok, solat 5 waktu, tidak berpacaran atau khalwat dan amalan wajib lainnya (serta diselipi amalan yaumi yang masih bolong-bolong pelaksanaannya). 

Yang aku (mau) tahu amalan sunnah ya sekedar puasa senin-kamis, sholat rawatib, sholat tahajud, sholat dhuha, infaq. Persis seperti di buku catatan amalan yaumi saat liqo.  Seakan aku ga terlalu peduli dengan sunnah-sunnah Rasulullah Salallahu 'Alaihi Wassalam lainnya.  Ga menghina orang2 yang 'terlalu alim' itu, cuman yaaa gabisa aja untuk jadi seperti mereka. Istighfar Fai....

Hidupku pun aku lewati dengan islam yang "biasa" aja itu.

Saat semester 8 lalu entah kenapa lagi galau-galaunya bak remaja labil mencari identitas. Depression and sadness often came into my night. Yang tadinya aku merasa fine2 aja dengan hidup, terus malah jadi kehilangan arah. Saat itu aku emang ngerasa orientasi hidupku sangatlah duniawi, jauh dari Allah, dan sering bolos liqo. Yang aku pikirkan hanya prestasi-prestasi yang perlu aku capai saat kuliah, IPK tinggi, lulus segera cari kerja, lalu lanjut S2, lalu S3, jalan-jalan keluar negeri, lalu lalu lalu dan lalu.

Tapi kemudian impian dan pikiran itu stuck di satu titik. Aku pun bertanya,

"sesungguhnya apa sih yang benar2 kamu inginkan?"

Then, there's something hit me di akhir semester 8 saat lebaran. They called it hidayah. I guess (yet I’m not sure). But I choose to believe it. Lewat seseorang yang tiba-tiba mampir sebentar dihidupku, terus akunya jadi galau soal nikah dan jodoh. Belum rampung galau orientasi hidup ditambah galau jodoh. Double galau wkwk. Kegalauan yang terlalu mainstream menurutku.

Aku yang udah pasrah banget dengan kegalauan ini, kemudian iseng-iseng buka instagramnya Ustadz Hanan Attaki. Ustadz yang berhasil memukau banyak remaja-remaja gaul untuk kemudian mau duduk di masjid mendengarkan kajiannya. Suka salfok dengan suara beliau *lah*. Suaranya emang adem sih. 

Dari situ jadi suka banget strolling around his instagram and pemudahijrah's account. Kemudian jadi merembet untuk ngedengerin kajian Ustadz Khalid Basalamah, Ustadz Syafiq Riza Basalamah, Ustadz Adi Hidayat, Ustadz Salim A. Fillah, dan Ustadz lain yang acuan dalilnya jelas dari Al Quran dan Sunnah yang shahih. Masih ngedengerin lewat yutub sih, but it's okay daripada ngga sama sekali.

Dari beliau-beliau itu aku jadi tau kalau kita harus mempelajari, memahami dan mengamalkan islam secara keseluruhan (kaffah), ga bisa setengah-setengah. Untuk memahami Islam juga harus melihat generasi para sahabat terdahulu. Amalan apa yang mereka kerjakan, bagaimana mereka menyikapi permasalahan dunia, dsb. 

Aku jadi teringat obrolan dengan temanku itu tadi soal islam biasa-biasa aja yang kemudian melontarkan pertanyaan pada diri sendiri,

"Sebenernya standar beribadah dalam islam yang biasa aja itu apa?

Bukankah dalam beragama yang menjadi acuan adalah Al Quran, Hadits, dan keputusan para ulama? Berarti yang jadi standar yang itu dong?

Sehingga yang katanya biasa-biasa saja itu bisa sangat relatif dong? Jadinya terserah orang itu antara lo mau apa ngga ngerjain ibadah itu. Patokan antara biasa aja dengan fanatik bisa menjadi sangat bias. Menurutku biasa saja, bisa jadi menurut dia luar biasa, atau sebaliknya. 

Memangnya kita udah yakin timbangan amal kita bakal lebih banyak daripada timbangan amal buruknya dengan hanya menjadi 'biasa' aja? Siapa sih yang bisa menjamin....

Bukankah hidup ini tentang sebanyak-banyaknya ibadah supaya Allah juga ridho untuk menerima kita di surga? Bukankah kita ini cuma musafir di bumi yang lalu tempat berpulangnya di akhirat?"

Kemudian aku jadi sadar, orang-orang yang aku sebut ‘terlalu alim’ itu sesungguhnya mereka sedang menjalankan sunnah-sunnah Rasulullah. Kita ga bisa ngejamin surga hanya dengan amalan wajib saja. Dan mereka yang berpegang teguh pada sunnah Rasulullah menurutku keren. Mereka mampu berprinsip ditengah-tengah peradaban yang sangat modern ini.

Aku masih belum mampu untuk menjalani sunnah-sunnah Rasul semuanya. Masih belajar memperbaiki. Ibaratnya masih seperti bayi tertatih-tatih belajar berjalan.

Kids jaman now mah akses untuk mendapatkan ilmu itu amat sangat mudah. Tinggal buka instagram, youtube, facebook, google, dll. Hanya saja pahala bermajlis ilmu tidak didapatkan. Gapapa, step by step. Nanti insyaa Allah dikuatkan untuk dateng ke kajian ilmu. Cari ustadz/ustadzah yang jelas dan benar pemahamannya dalam menyampaikan dalil ya, yang berlandaskan Al Quran dan Hadits. Dan cari teman yang mampu menguatkan kita untuk istiqomah beribadah.

Malaysia, believe it or not, dulu aku sempat takut untuk mengunjungi negara ini. Why? Dulu aku pernah denger (lupa sih siapa yang cerita) cerita-cerita kurang menyenangkan tentang jalan-jalan ke Malaysia, dari mulai orang-orangnya yang kurang ramah sampai makanan yang kurang enak. Apalagi dulu sedang ramai-ramainya Indonesia dan Malaysia musuhan, jadi aku takut kalau ke sana dijutekin, huhuhu. But, guess what? This country now is on my list everytime I have holiday time (AND MONEY OF COURSE). And the story I’ve heard are totally wrong (or maybe, the one that tell me the story just unlucky, hihihi). For these past two years, I already went to Malaysia 4 times. Dan setelah empat kali itu aku baru sadar kalau aku belum tulis sama sekali tentang jalan-jalan ke Malaysia ya (kecuali waktu transit waktu ke Korea South Korea: Land of Dreams (“Buat Visa Susah Nggak Sih?”) dan nonton BTOB BTOB in Malaysia: Unexpected Goodbye (1)sih), hehehe.

Karena sudah terlalu banyak yang aku lalui, jadi ingatan aku tentang trip-trip ke Malaysia ini sudah tumpang tindih. Jadi, aku akan ringkas cerita ke Malaysia-nya jadi beberapa highlight tentang apa aja yang harus kalian coba, datangi, cari, dll di Malaysia yaaa hehe. Sooo…., selama empat kali ke sana aku selalu pakai maskapai Air Asia. Malaysia, khususnya KL ini kan memang “rumah”-nya Air Asia ya, jadi Air Asia sendiri punya one whole airport called KLIA 2 di sana. KLIA 2 ini memang airport khusus Air Asia. Sementara, untuk maskapai lainnya akan departed and arrived at KLIA.

Jadi, yang selalu aku lakukan setiap kali sampai di KLIA2 adalah ke toilet!hahaha. Terus, jangan lupa bawa tumbler atau botol plastik apa pun untuk isi air di KLIA 2, di sana, biasanya dekat toilet selalu disediakan dispenser air, lumayan kan bisa irit untuk beli air mineral, hehe. Setelah itu kita harus berjalan cukup jauh untuk menuju imigrasi. Karena aku ke Malaysia bawa koper besar hanya sekali dan sisanya selalu pakai koper kecil, jadi habis dari imigrasi biasanya aku langsung cari makan, nggak ada ambil bagasi. Aku biasanya cari makan ke Quizinn yang adalah foodcourt-nya KLIA2, walaupun sebenarnya di luar foodcourt ada kedai-kedai cepat saji seperti Subway (my love), Pizza Hut, KFC, Texas, dll. Tapi tergantung mood juga sih lagi pengennya apa. Di sini aku selalu harus, musti, kudu beli Yong Tau Foo. Kadang-kadang kalau ke sini bisa waktu datang, pulang, atau dua-duanya, haha. Kedainya posisinya ada di arah ke toilet. Jadi kedainya ini tuh jual yong tao foo, yaiyalah, haha, sayuran dan seafood-seafood olahannya segar, kuahnya juga enak banget, mie-nya enak, everything is good, harganya nggak nguras kantong, dan pegawainya juga orang Indonesia loh. Terakhir ke sana kasirnya akang dari Sukabumi, hahaha.

Kalau kita udah pilih isiannya, kita pilih kuahnya, kaldu atau tom yum, and I choose kaldu.

Terus, habis makan ke mana aku pergi? Ke penginapan dong pastinya! Setiap ke Malaysia aku biasanya stay di Easy Hotel yang lokasinya di KL Sentral. Aku pilih hotel ini karena lokasinya super duper strategis dan harganya murah, tapi hotelnya nggak murahan. Serius deh, aku rekomendasiin banget hotel ini buat kalian. Walaupun jadinya suka takut kehabisan kamar sekarang kalau mau pesen di sana haha. Soalnya, terakhir aku ke KL, aku kehabisan hotel ini dan akhirnya nginep di satu hotel yang segrup juga sama Easy, namanya City Central.

Aku ceritain ya bedanya Easy Hotel sama City Central dan kenapa aku bisa tahu kalo mereka satu grup. Jadi, Easy Hotel ini lokasinya di KL Sentral. KL Sentral itu bisa dibilang pusatnya transportasi di KL, khususnya kereta sih. Jadi, semua kereta baik itu KLIA Express (airport train), komuter, LRT, atau MRT akan lewat atau berhenti atau berangkat dari sini. Dari stasiun ini juga kita bisa naik kereta ke bandara dan terminal bus Bandar Tasik Selatan. Selain itu di stasiun/mall ini juga kita bisa naik bus gratis Go KL untuk keliling KL. Lokasi stasiun dari masing-masing jenis kereta ini sendiri terhubung langsung dengan Mall Nu Sentral dan dari mall ini kita bisa menyebrang langsung ke Easy Hotel yang letaknya di seberang mall dan di depan lift dan eskalator tempat turun dari mall. Di sebelah hotel ada dua convenience store, yaitu KK dan Seven Eleven, dan di dekat pintu keluar mall-nya sendiri ada Family Mart. See…kita kalau mau cari snack, minuman, atau pengen beli oleh-oleh yang ringkas bisa cari di sekitar hotel aja.

Kalian tinggal ngesot ke samping hotel buat beli ini, hihihi.

Ini aku beli di KFC stasiun.

Selain itu, Easy Hotel ini juga punya restauran sendiri, namanya ABC Bistro Cafe. ABC Bistro Cafe ini selalu ramai pengunjung loh, apalagi disaat breakfast. Untuk breakfast sendiri kita bisa pilih beli atau nggak saat memesan kamar hotel (kalau aku sih pesan di salah satu online ticket platform gitu, sebut aja Traveloka, wkwkwk, bukan iklan yeee). Nanti saat breakfast kita diberi pilihan beberapa menu seperti nasi lemak, roti channai, telur rebus, toast, teh tarik, teh biasa, atau kopi. Kalau mau beli di luar menu breakfast juga bisa kok, harganya juga murah-murah banget. Restauran ini buka sampai malam, selain makanan yang penuh rempah-rempah, restauran ini juga menyediakan beberapa menu western. Aku sendiri pernah coba nasi lemak, ayam goreng, teh tarik, es jeruk nipis, kepiting balado, dll di sini dan karena aku mah cocokan ya sama apa aja, jadi ya enaklah kalau menurut aku hehe.

Ini salah satu contoh menu breakfast yang udah ditentuin sama hotel. Mon maap, tapi aku sama bunda nggak cocok sama yang ada kari-karinya itu. Tapi toastnya supeeerb.

Untuk kamarnya sendiri aku pesan dua kali kamar triple dan satu kali kamar double. Ukurannya sih nggak jauh beda. Untuk kamar triple jadi lebih sempit karena kasurnya dua, untuk yang double dan single. Fasilitas di kamarnya sendiri standar sih, ada kulkas kecil, private bathroom, sajadah (yap, hotel ini memfasilitasi sekali pengunjung muslim, saat masuk hotel pun kita akan diberi ucapan “Assalamu’alaikum”, dan ayat suci Al-Qur’an selalu diputar di lobby hotel), televisi, peralatan mandi, air mineral, teh, kopi, dll. Untuk desain hotel secara keseluruhan, desain hotel ini bisa dibilang casual. Dan terakhir, untuk pelayanannya not bad, mayoritas staff yang aku temui ramah. Overall, it’s a good hotel, that’s why I keep coming and staying here.

Triple Room

Nah, how about City Central? Well, aku pilih hotel ini atas rekomendasi temenku sih. Jadi, waktu mau nonton BTOB kemarin ternyata Easy Hotel penuh. Panik dong aku, tapi setelah konsultasi sama temenku akhirnya nemulah hotel ini. Lokasinya nggak jauh dari Easy, hanya jalan sedikit aja, dan harganya pun nggak beda jauh juga sih. Waktu itu aku sampai jam 1 pagi, jadi untuk ke hotelnya nggak bisa lewat mall, harus lewat parkiran mobil yang lumayan sepi, tapi ada satpamnya kok, dan kalau udah di jalan raya masih lumayan ramai sih. Pas check-in aku kaget, “Lah, ini kan mas yang di Easy.” Hmmm, jangan-jangan satu grup nih sebenernya. Terus waktu aku masuk ke kamar, lah bentuk sabun, air mineral, tatanan kamar sama. Cuma emang desainnya lebih ke klasik kalau ini. Wah, ini mah fix, satu grup haha. Jadi intinya ya kayak nginep di Easy aja. Di sekitarnya juga banyak mini market India gitu. Karena, lokasi kedua hotel ini memang di kawasan Little India.

Kalau untuk makanan, sama seperti Easy, City Central juga punya restauran sendiri, aku lupa namanya apa, makanannya nggak beda jauh sama Easy. Untuk breakfast juga ada tambahan biaya sekitar Rp. 37.000,00 saat pesan kamar. Menu breakfastnya sendiri selama dua kali kita sarapan di sana sama sih, yang adalah buffet yang isinya buah (selama dua hari sarapan buahnya sama, semangka), telur rebus/mata sapi, nasi goreng, toast, susu, sereal, jus jeruk, kopi, dll. Untuk menu itu dengan harga Rp. 37.000,00 murah banget siiih, karena kita bisa ambil beberapa kali. Jadi, kalau kalian pesan kamar di Easy penuh atau sebaliknya, bisa dicek dulu ya masing-masing hotel ini. Dua-duanya recommended!

Terus, pokoknya jangan lupa buat jajan di convenience store di sekitar hotel yang aku ceritain ini. Aku sendiri suka jajan di Family Mart sih, beli onigiri, es krim cone-nya Family Mart, dan Banana Uyu-nya Korea. Well, you can hardly blame me for recycling old material when that is pretty much what Queen Mary Dark Harbor has been doing the past few years. Fortunately, the well-known tourist destination retains its allure, in some cases squeezing surprises the ship’s gloomy corridors.

Queen Mary Halloween 2019 Review: Overview

Halloween 2019 sees five returning mazes, with only one newcomer, along with value-added attractions (live performers, the PANIC 4D Experience short film) and numerous watering holes where squeamish land-lubbers can imbibe liquid courage to steel their nerves against the oceanic terrors haunting the famous floating hotel. The ship’s crew is once again on board: The Captain, Scary Mary, The Ring Master, Samuel the Savage, The Iron Master, Chef, The Voodoo Priestess, and Graceful Gale. The latter two no longer have mazes of their own, but they do lurk on the premises, along with numerous other free-roaming ghouls, turning the grounds around the Queen Mary into essentially one big scare zone. The overall vibe remains circus-like, with some characters lapsing into tongue-in-cheek banter when the opportunity presents itself. Fortunately, the presentations within the maze remain mostly serious, although a touch of funhouse-style levity is inherent in the nature of The Circus.

There are myriad snack food options to keep your blood sugar levels up while braving Dark Harbor’s frights. Many are overpriced, but some are worth the coin. Our favorite is Scary Mary’s Old Tyme Ice Scream, for three reasons:

They serve delicious cold Ice cream, which is very refreshing after emerging from Queen Mary’s corridors, which can be stuffy even during cold weather.

Scary Mary’s Old Tyme Ice Screams serves Nitro, a wonderful cold-brew coffee that will jolt you back to consciousness after carousing your way the the many bars.

Queen Mary Halloween 2019 Review: Rogue (New)

From the outside, Rogue looks suspiciously like DeadRise, but what lies inside?

Rogue, the new maze, is the highlight of the Queen Mary’s 2019 Halloween celebration. At first, it looks like a mere rebranding of the old DeadRise walk-through, using the same exterior to simulate the prow of a ship on the pavement beside the real ship docked nearby. However, Rogue is an clear improvement in several ways.

First, the premise lends an urgency to the maze that was lacking in DeadRise, which was about a ghost ship resurfacing but which did little with the idea except place ghoulish sailors in its corridors. Rogue plays like a prequel, with the vessel in the process of sinking, its frantic crew running in panic and urging passengers to abandon ship. This adds a level of excitement to the usual scares.

Second, Rogue far more convincingly simulate the interior of a ship. A dome has been built overhead to shut out surrounding light and sound, which undermined DeadRise. In addition, whereas DeadRise usually had you walking on the parking lot pavement, Rogue has its own floors, some canted at angles so that you feel as if you are really stumbling on the deck of a floundering vessel.

The best set piece is the bridge, where the captain desperately wrestles with the steering wheel, vainly attempting to avoid swelling waves (glimpsed through the windows) that threaten to capsize the ship. You almost want to volunteer to help him, but his crew insist that you keep moving and save yourself.

Despite the similarity to its predecessor, Rogue qualifies as a new experience, and it gets bonus points for actually exploiting the briny depths as part of its theme – something which, strangely, most of the Queen Mary’s Halloween mazes fail to do. If you’re not a fan of Dark Harbor, this may not be enough to change your mind; for fans, however, this is a must-see.

Queen Mary Halloween 2019 Review: Returning Mazes

Dark Harbor’s five returning mazes are Intrepid and the Circus (on land) and Lullaby, B350, and Feast (on board). All of them recreate elements seen during Halloween 2018, with some variations and streamlining. Over the course of the past few years, for example, the opening scenes that established the back stories of Dark Harbor’s characters have been retired one by one until none remain. In exchange, settings have been changed and pathways through the ship have been altered.

In the case of Feast, the walk-through extends deeper into the bowels of the Queen Mary, leading to a “hidden bar” on a wide platform atop a double staircase near the end. It’s a nice surprise, but coming at the very end, it’s not exactly a thrilling climax to a maze that (despite its generic cannibalism theme) does perhaps the best job of exploiting the ship’s iron corridors to unnerving effect.

In other cases, such as The Circus, the maze is essentially the same. Intrepid once again has little to do with its nominal theme (a foundry where the iron for the Queen Mary was forced), instead spending most of its time in the haunted hallways of Fisherman’s Village – always one of the best locations for a Halloween maze.

B340 feels slightly different, having apparently rehired the nuns absent from last Halloween, whose presence ties in with the back story blaming the homicidal actions of Samuel the Savage on Satanic influences (something no longer spelled out by a voice-over narration, though clear enough from the crosses spinning upside down on the walls).

Most changed this Halloween is Lullaby, long our favorite Queen Mary Halloween maze. Unfortunately, the revised version suffers from relative absence of its signature character, Scary Mary, who doesn’t appear until halfway through. Instead, almost immediately after entering, you find yourself stumbling into one of Dark Harbor’s hidden bars, after which the corridors are haunted by other characters explaining that they are summoning one of the ship’s most dangerous spirits.

When Scary Mary responds to the summons, her appearances consist mostly of sudden jump-scares, reducing her to the level of a malevolent jack-in-the-box. In the past, the strength of Lullaby resided in Scary Mary’s eerie interactions with visitors, alternately plaintive and threatening – her temper switching at a mercurial rate that kept you off-guard. Giving Scary Mary a chance to display personality kept her from becoming repetitious; in fact, it enhanced the mazes’s creep factor by giving the impression that, no matter how quickly you left her behind, the ghostly little girl would always materialize ahead of you in the next room.

Sadly, this element is seriously diminished this year, and Lullaby is a lesser experience because of it.

Queen Mary Halloween 2019 Review: Watering Holes

Following the course established over the past decade, the Queen Mary voyages farther in the direction of becoming a destination event, where people remain after the mazes to watch trapeze artists and fire jugglers from private cabanas or one of the many bars situated throughout the grounds, with names such as The Last Drop and The Gallows.

Most of these serve traditional well drinks, but in the barrel room you can enjoy a whiskey flight, consisting of three half-ounce servings of your choice, poured out by bar maids with skeletal visages.

We sampled Bourbon Angel’s Envy, Old Smokey Apple Pie Moonshine, and Old Smokey Mango Habanero. The first is a standar whiskey with a smooth, velvet texture. Apple Pie Moonshine tastes exactly as the name suggests; in fact, we imagine we could have guessed the flavor blind-folded.

Whiskey Flight in the Barrel Room

The real treat of the trio was the Mango Habanero. The initial syrupy sweetness of the mango flavor temporarily disguised the zing of the habanero, which revealed itself with a surprisingly potent burn from tongue to gullet. The contrast was remarkable if nothing else – definitely worth checking out for those with strong stomachs.

Queen Mary Halloween 2019 Review: Conclusion

This Halloween, the Queen Mary holds to the same heading charted last year, adding one new maze, revising the returning mazes, and emphasizing opportunities to hang out and relax with a drink. The event remains enjoyable, and it has a big advantage over comparable Halloween theme parks: by squeezing so much into a very small space, it creates a very favorable ratio of distance walked to mazes and distance walked within mazes; visitors exhausted by dragging themselves up and down Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest can easily saunter through Dark Harbor, enjoying all the attractions without breaking a sweat.

However, the Queen Mary’s Halloween cruise could benefit from a course correction to explore new waters, preferably haunted by strange sea creatures and other aquatic terrors. For an event named “Dark Harbor,” there is little directly connected to the ocean. The Ring Master, The Iron Master, Chef, and Samuel the Savage could easily fit into any other haunted attraction. Scary Mary and Graceful Gale used to have back stories that tied them directly to the Queen Mary, but those have been virtually forgotten. Only Rogue delivers a raging storm’s worth maritime horror unlike anything at any other Halloween event. The Queen Mary should develop new mazes that emphasize this aspect in order to truly set itself apart from the competition.
