Twin Peaks // S03E05: Case Files

i'm trying to find stuff about David Cronenberg's movies, but most of the things i've come across focus on the visual/horror aspect of his movies. i agree that his movies are visually insane and his style of body horror is unmatched in how terrifying it is. but i think that there needs to be more focus on the philosophical and the political aspects of his movies.

for example, David Lynch's stuff are so thoroughly analyzed and interpreted. now, he is very unique in his approach to filmmaking and art in general, but i think that people can take the fanbase of David Lynch as a good example. i feel like Cronenberg's works, while very different from Lynch's, have a similar way of layered structure where you can dig as deep into them as you wanna.

i can only speak based on the ones i've watched:

Videodrome probably has something to say about the dangers of mass media, parasociality, desensitization towards violence through television and it can be viewed through the lens of the internet. it's been a while since i watched this one, but i do remember lying down and just thinking about what this movie meant after i watched it.

Shivers was very interesting to watch just when i was beginning to understand asexuality, and so i saw it as a tale of allonormativity. the intentions of the scientist who developed the parasite could also be interesting to look at. the idea of "sex as violence" is prominent and is, from what i've heard, a common theme in Cronenberg's filmography. this movie reminded me of a quote from dr Jacoby of Twin Peaks: "The problems of our entire society are of a sexual nature."

Scanners is definitely very political as well. the drug in the movie reflects the thalidomide scandal. i also saw on wikipedia that scanners were an allegory for "1960s political radicals, counterculture hippies, and as nascent Young Urban Professionals" and that it deals with what happens when counterculture becomes popular. i couldnt find where i could read the article cited for that interperetation, but id love to hear more about that perspective. they could be an allegory for many other things, too.
