The Complicated Pet Food Industry
Tumblr media
In general, the pet food industry operates in a fairly veiled manner – particularly the larger manufacturers in the kibble segment. Current primary concerns have focused microbial contamination and the presence of ingredients undeclared on the label. Indeed, a 2013 study of dry pet foods used for food elimination trials stated that 80% of selected pet food diets were contaminated with unidentified ingredients.
More recently in 2018, a study critically assessed published discrepancies between ingredients and labeling in commercial pet foods, including those with “novel” or “limited” ingredients and containing micronized hydrolysates. Unexpected added ingredients were more frequently detected than those missing from the label.
The authors searched 2 article databases on July 7, 2017, and January 12, 2018, for relevant studies, and screened abstracts from the leading international veterinary dermatology congresses for reports on pet food labeling and ingredients. The resulting data were extracted from 17 articles and 1 abstract. The studies varied both in the number of pet foods tested (median: 15; range: 1- 210) and that of ingredients specifically evaluated (median: 4; range: 1-11). Studies most often employed either PCR to detect DNA or ELISA to identify proteins from 1 or more vegetable or animal species. Two studies used mass spectrometry to increase the number of detectable proteins.
The various methods found ingredients that were not on the label in 0-83% (median: 45%) of tested diets; this percentage varied between 33-83% in pet foods with novel or limited ingredients that are typically proposed for elimination diets. Similarly, ingredients were found to be missing from the label in 0-38% (median: 1%) of tested foods. Finally, 6 studies included evaluations of several hydrolysate-containing pet foods: mislabeling with unlabeled or missing ingredients was found only in 1 of them.
These statements should give everyone pause, since food elimination trial diets literally are used to figure out which food ingredient is causing a medical condition. This would be like a product’s packaging saying a product was “nut free”, when it in fact contains nuts.
As this is apparently happening with pre-packaged pet food elimination diets, it is not surprising that it can also apply generally to commercial pet diets. Think about the number of steps from “farm to bowl” meat ingredients must go through: farm to slaughterhouse to processing plant to possibly another processing plant and another plant to the packaging plant. Then, you need to factor in the grains, fruits, vegetables, and the vitamin and mineral packs that are added. This scenario barely scratches the surface.
To highlight the huge marketing impact this issue has had on the multibillion dollar pet food industry since May 2014, litigation between two very large pet food manufacturers and their suppliers about the listed and actual ingredients in their diets is ongoing through the federal courts. The back-and-forth litigation and its attendant publicity has given the public and world a mere glimpse into the pet industry.
The federal government has been involved and the accusations and findings have lead to criminal indictments and verdicts, with more possibly yet to come.

Jean Dodds minimal vaccination protocol
Anonymous said: 💎 so I don't know if you've covered this before (couldn't find anything in the faq or search), but do you have any thoughts on the minimal vaccination protocol as recommended by dr jean dodds? basically every single breeder and a lot of shelters in rescues here in the usa are practicing this protocol. i couldn't help but to think of antivaxx nonsense when i first heard of it, honestly, but i imagine a vet would know much more about it than a simple layperson!
I don’t know a lot about Dr Jean Dodds, other than other vets on forums being unimpressed that she was recommending thyroid medications for dogs she’d never seen based on (normal) blood results owners had sent her and the whole ‘making recommendations for pets you can’t see’ business is something I’m opposed to, and I understand she leans towards the anti-vaxx side of things. (Hint: people mentioning vaccinosis is a bit clue)
The so-called ‘minimal vaccination protocol’ is here, summarized below:
9 to 10 weeks: Distemper and Parvovirus
14 to 15 weeks: Distemper and Parvovirus
18 weeks: Parvovirus only
20 weeks+: Rabies
1 year: Parvovirus, Distemper and Rabies, but not at the same time.
Which is a little bit weird to me.
Technically the absolute ‘minimum vaccination’ would be giving a MLV (modified live vaccine) for Distemper and Parvovirus in a dog over 6 months of age, once, and hope for the best. This is what typically happens with feral and street dogs with the trap and neuter programs.
It’s not a terrible protocol as such, but it does seem a little bit weird to me.
Firstly, there’s no kennel cough in that protocol. Technically kennel cough is an optional vaccine (Parainfluenza and Bordatella being the main two kennel cough components we worry about, but adenovirus is one too which has been excluded from this protocol). Now for a pet dog you might choose to leave it out, for but shelters which have lots of stressed dogs crowded together? Or for breeding dogs going to shows that mix with other dogs, knowing that the fever from kennel cough can cause temporary low sperm counts? Surely you would consider it. Especially with the oral or intranasal vaccines which are associated with higher efficacy and lower side effects.
Adenovirus (infectious hepatitis) is also not here. It’s fairly uncommon, but is generally lethal, and at least locally to me all MLV distemper and parvo vacs include it, and it’s not like I can take it out.
Rabies I would just follow manufacturer guidelines. Rabies is technically an optional vaccine according to the WSAVA, only because there are some places in the world, like Australia, which don’t have it, so we don’t vaccinate for it. But if you are in a Rabies area, you should really be giving as recommended by the manufacturer to cover your butt.
Spacing out vaccines so they’re not given on the same day I personally think is unnecessary in most cases, but I have no problem with people doing it. Especially if they think the animal has had any reactions before.
I’m not sure what the logic is of giving a parvo vaccine at 15 weeks and 18 weeks, as all manufacturers will claim that giving it at 16 weeks is adequate. Surely if you wanted an absolute minimum you’d just do 10 weeks and 16 weeks, so I‘m perplexed at the reasoning here. Perhaps her local brands make different claims? They must be somewhat different if they can get vaccines without adenovirus in them.
It probably is adequate protection for parvovirus in puppies. But you know what the more typical vaccination protocol is?
6 to 8 weeks (preferably 8 weeks): Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus (Infectious Hepatitis)
10 to 12 weeks: Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus  +/- Kennel Cough
16 weeks+: Distemper, Parvovirus, Adenovirus +/- Kennel Cough
Rabies as indicated by region
So the ‘minimal’ protocol isn’t that different, and just pushed the vaccines back by a few weeks. Honestly if I was going minimal I’d drop the third parvo vac and do the second one at 16 weeks.
If the dogs are at risk being in a high parvo area, the 18 weeks vaccine isn’t going to help any more than the 16 week one would, and you’re putting the pups at more risk by skipping/delaying the first vaccine when they’re most at risk.
So in conclusion, a bit weird, but not totally terrible I suppose.
Though rabies is not my wheelhouse.

Dr. Jean Dodds
Aka Dr. Jean Frauds
I went to look at her website for Nutriscan after someone recommended it for a dog who was displayed some allergy symptoms.
Nutriscan does not test for allergies. Only "insensitivities". Under the information page, she explains that they test for certain immunoglobulins which only actually identify what animals have eaten. Also the only information she cites is her own.
Here is the list of articles that Skeptvet has.
Her practice relies heavily on case studies and testimonials which are a grey area with the FDA in classic snake oil salesmen style.
Skeptvet has an excellent rundown of all the questionable pseudoscience that Dodds uses for the Nutriscan

Sawbones has a whole episode on nutritional sensitivity testing as well.

Fargo: Top 10 Characters
Television shows like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and The Wire are definitely three of the greatest in the genre of non-fantasy dramas, thrillers, and crime fiction. If you love those three shows, but you are unfamiliar with Fargo, stop whatever you are doing, and watch it now. Right now. Thank me later.
Tumblr media
One of the reasons why Fargo is a work of genius is the intensity and depth of its characters. These characters, in my opinion, have earned the right to be categorized alongside Walter White, Tony Soprano, Omar Little and Don Draper, as some of the legendary TV characters of all time. This blog takes a look at eleven of the most astonishing characters Fargo has provided to the world of television.
Beware of spoilers, obviously.
Consolation Prize: Lester Nygaard (Season 1)
“Old Lester, now, he would've just let it slide. But not this guy.”
Tumblr media
Played by Martin Freeman, or better known as Dr. John Watson from the twenty-first-century version of Sherlock Holmes, Lester Nygaard is a loser. Like all losers, we tend to feel bad for him, until his personality develops in a way which makes us abandon our pity for him. Pity is replaced by disgust, and sadness is replaced by anger. Lester’s transformation from a good-for-nothing non-achiever to a devious and heartless criminal and fugitive is definitely one of the most subtle character developments I’ve seen on TV. His role is often overshadowed by two other characters from the same season. Very important character nonetheless, brilliantly portrayed by Freeman.
10. Wes Wrench/Mr. Wrench (Season 1, Season 3)
“ “
Tumblr media
Played by the deaf, yet brilliant actor - Russel Harvard - Mr. Wrench also can’t hear. What can do is kill. He is an assassin, and he is loyal and lethal. He appears in the first season as one-half of the committed team of Mr. Wrench and Mr. Numbers (Grady Numbers). Wrench’s childish attitude is quick to win the hearts of the audience, while his kill skills and will-power earn him a spot on this list. After losing his partner (Mr. Numbers) in a gunfight, he is spared by his partner’s killer because the killer was himself impressed by Wrench’s skills and character. He reappears in season three as an invaluable accomplice to another character on this list, a role which makes us love him even more.
9.  Molly Solverson (Season 1)
“Got to love a man who keeps his word, right?“
Tumblr media
Played by Allison Tolman, Molly is the walking-definition of a young and hungry-for-justice police officer. A daughter to a police officer and a granddaughter to a sheriff, Molly is the character that makes us nurture the hope that there is hope for goodness and justice. After losing her murdered chief early on in the show, who is replaced by an incompetent one, Molly takes up the challenge of solving her chief’s murder all by herself, and she quickly finds herself trapped in a world of assassins and conspiracies. But despite being shot and hospitalized, she just does not give in, acting as the top cop that she isn’t. The character even earned Tolman the Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
8. V.M. Varga (Season 3)
“The past is unpredictable.”
Tumblr media
Played by David Thewlis, or as we know him - Professor Remus ‘Mooney’ Lupin - from the Harry Potter world, Varga is sick, and in all likelihood he will make you sick to the stomach. Sadistic and ruthless, with a portrait of Joseph Stalin on his desk, Varga uses a businessman hitherto leading a happy and normal life to further his money laundering scheme. Intimidation and disposal seem to be his key tactics to success, apparent when he makes the businessman’s subordinate drink his own urine as a punishment for acting suspiciously. With the worst teeth on the show, and probably suffering from bulimia, Thewlis’ villainous role does not allow us to take even a one minute break between episodes.
7. Floyd Gerhardt (Season 2)
“Three times, I sent men to do a job. Three times, they come back unfinished. I'll handle this myself.”
Tumblr media
Played by Jean Smart, Floyd Gerhardt inherited one of the most difficult jobs in the world. After her husband Otto, the head of the Gerhardt crime syndicate, suffers a stroke and is unable to lead the mafia any longer, Floyd takes over all the guns and the money. Her eldest boy, Dodd, is unwilling to accept a woman, who is also old, as the new mafia don. However, throughout the season, Floyd shows us who’s boss as she uses an iron hand to deal with a rival gang from Kansas City and to investigate the homicide of her youngest son. One of the characteristics of Floyd which makes us like her so much is her love and concern for her granddaughter, who is mostly abused and humiliated by her father Dodd. The characters in season 2 are the strongest, but without Floyd, none of the other characters would be as appealing as they are.
6. Gloria Burgle (Season 3)
“There’s violence to knowing the world isn't what you thought.”
Tumblr media
Played by Carrie Coon, Gloria is the older version of Molly Solverson. After finding her stepdad murdered via asphyxiation, Gloria’s investigation leads to bizarre outcomes that find her entwined in something very big and very dangerous. A recently divorced woman, whose position of Chief also got taken away, her new Chief is simply intolerable, who demands of her to let go of the investigation. But like Molly, she just doesn’t give up, and her relentless pursuit constitutes the heart of the third season. Gloria is an example of how some police officers simply cannot be intimidated or corrupted into submission. The final scene of Fargo is a conversation between Varga and Gloria, and arguably, that tense scene is one of the best dialogue exchanges in the series. A true superhero.
5. Lou Solverson (Season 2)
“Am I the only one here who’s clear on the concept of law enforcement?”
Tumblr media
A loving father, a caring husband and the hotshot cop of town, Lou Solverson, played by Patrick Wilson, is your Marvel/DC superhero. Lou actually made his first appearance in the first season, as Molly’s father - former cop currently running a diner. In the second season, we are given a glimpse of Lou’s glory days as he single-handedly takes on both the Gerhardt Family and the Kansas City Mafia. Two things to note about Lou’s character - fearlessness and morality. Lou just does not submit to intimidation, as is seen in his confrontations with Mike Milligan on one occasion and with the Gerhardt Family on another. On the latter aspect, Lou is forced to take in his long-time friend Ed Blumquist on charges of murder, but the element of friendship does not deter Lou to do what he knows is his duty and is morally right.
4. Mike Milligan (Season 2)
“If the goal is to kill those who oppress you, what does it matter who goes first?”
Tumblr media
Played by Bokeem Woodbine, Mike Milligan is the epitome of suave. A well-read man, who often uses poetic quotes out of nowhere to dramatize his point, Mike is an assassin working for the Kansas City Mafia, and is in charge of ripping the Gerhardt Family apart. Arguably the most cunning and nefarious character of the second season, what sets Mike apart from other villains is the unbelievable aura of calm he brings to a seemingly tense situation. Varga does that too, but Mike does it better. Intelligence is his most lethal weapon, as his loyal henchmen, known as The Kitchen Brothers, carry out most of the bloodshed for him. At the end, although Mike meets a fate worse than death, most of us would die to be him during a gang-war.
3. Lorne Malvo (Season 1)
“There are no saints in the animal kingdom. Only breakfast and dinner.”
Tumblr media
Played by the former husband of Angelina Jolie, Billy Bob Thornton’s portrayal of Lorne Malvo goes down as the greatest villainous role in Fargo. Malvo, in simple words, is pure evil. He does not care. He is a predator, with an ideology best put as, “kill or be killed”.  He begins an unusual friendship with the Lester Nygaard, whose character is antithetical to that of Malvo. He even saves Lester from arrest and gradually, through his venomous words, turns him from an innocent loser into a evil loser. Eventually, Lester tries to show him who’s boss, realizing he couldn’t have made a worse choice about who to fuck around with. The personification of evil that is Malvo, can be categorized with characters such an Anton Chigurh, the Joker and Hans Gruber (who has an unusual physical resemblance with Malvo) on the list of the greatest villains of all time.
2. Ohanzee “Hanzee” Dent (Season 2)
“ “Send the Indian,” they'd say. “Who cares about booby traps? Give Hanzee a flashlight and a knife and send him down into the black echo.” ”
Tumblr media
Played by Zahn McClarnon, Hanzee Dent is not an evil guy. He is a bad man, sure. But he is not EVIL. He is not a villain. Society alienated him, treated him like a mongrel and made him a ticking time-bomb only seconds away from the boom. A native-american assassin recruited by Otto Gerhardt from a very young age, Hanzee appears to be a loyal hit-man for the Gerhardt Family, until he loses his shit. An unstoppable force and a ruthless killer with a history of military service (Vietnam), Hanzee has an agenda of his own. His killing spree is triggered by a sign outside a pub boasting about murders of 22 Sioux Indians who were hung there, with a puddle of dried vomit beneath it. Arguably the most complicated character of the show, with an intense development of personality, Hanzee Dent is the only character in the show who is a lethal assassin but makes us pity him and root for him.
One Last Consolation Prize: Peggy Blumquist (Season 2)
“I just wanted to be someone.”
Tumblr media
Played by Kirsten Dunst, or Mary Jane from the Tobey Maguire Spiderman series, Peggy Blumquist is the source of all the drama. After she accidentally runs over the youngest Gerhardt son, Rye Gerhardt, her husband, Ed Blumquist (another brilliant character) becomes number one on the Gerhardt Family’s blacklist, and acquires the nickname - The Butcher of Luverne. Peggy should not be perceived as stupid or a trouble-maker. Throughout the show, she feels what many of us also feel, that we are not living up to our potential. Her interests conflict with her husband’s interests, but eventually she does everything in her capacity to clean up the mess that she (unintentionally) created, and to save her husband from the cops and the mafia. Her portrayal by Dunst was vastly appreciated by critics and fans alike, but in a show comprising of so many awesome characters, it was impossible for me to include Peggy in my top ten.
1. Nikki Swango (Season 3)
“You've made me the happiest woman ever. Now, let's make a sex tape.”
Tumblr media
In Fargo, we have super-heroes, heroes, villains and super-villains, and we have Nikki Swango, portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Right from the moment we saw her eliminate a threat to her grand plan with the help an air-conditioner, Nikki provided Fargo with the most unique ‘unique character’. A genius who utilizes her intellect in a professional game of cards (Bridge), she may be, at first, perceived as selfish and shallow. But towards the end, it is evident that she actually did love her fiance Ray Stussy, and wasn’t just using him for her personal ambitions. It is hard to put a hero/villain label on her because she embodies the key characteristics of both roles - empathy, willpower, deviousness, ruthlessness and a thick skin. Her partnership with Mr. Wrench, her plan to execute the entire squad led by Varga AND extort two million dollars from him has to be one of the most memorable moments of the series. Not to forget how she, along with Wrench, hijacked the truck carrying all the documents needed by the IRS to prosecute Varga. Simply put, Nikki Swango is the badass of the show.
So that’s my list. I won’t ask you to like or comment on my blog (some feedback would be appreciated though). All I want from the world of Netflix, is that this TV show receives the viewership and appreciation that it deserves, which it hasn’t gotten yet.

It’s Complicated                       Chapter 6:  A Little Too Easy
Tumblr media
Source: @kendaspntwd
Chapters 1-5        Story on AO3
Amanda Rollins noticed Rafe Rojas the second he walked into the squad room.  Only a man who lived in jeans could make them fit like that.  And the squint lines around his dark eyes did something to her down low.  He was the lean, cowboy type – well, he was a literal cowboy – she absolutely could not resist.  His hat was well-worn and didn’t disguise the shagginess of his thick, dark hair.  She didn’t mean to come on to him.  She liked Frankie, and Frankie was in deep shit. But her older brother was basically sex in cowboy boots.  So Amanda got real Southern, real fast, the minute she stepped up to Rafe to introduce herself.  Sure, Porter was standing next to him and could have made the introductions.  But Amanda’s ovaries were in charge.  Or some part of her female anatomy, anyway.
“We’re on our way out to Riker’s,” Porter explained.  “We just stopped by to give you guys a chance to ask any questions you may have thought of.”
“Nikki OK with that?”
“Nikki might not be aware of it,” Porter muttered.  “And your lives might be easier if you didn’t mention this visit to Stone, either. Unless something good comes out of it.  But I trust you guys.  I know you’re on Frankie’s side.  ”
Dodds introduced himself to Rafe, who was a few inches shorter and a few shades darker.  Rafe’s voice was deep and Amanda thought she detected just the slightest twang, like a delicate spice that gave a tasty dish just the right, subtle kick.
For several minutes, the group discussed anything in Frankie’s past that might be either helpful or hurtful, but there was nothing.  She was who she was.  She had no skeletons, no previous arrests (knife-related or otherwise), and no history of any kind of violence, unless having a hair-trigger temper and a sharp tongue counted. Rafe couldn’t help the case, except to reassure them that there were no surprises in his sister’s past waiting to trip her up.
Porter and Rafe left shortly thereafter.  Amanda could feel her thighs quiver when Rafe touched his hat to her and said, “Miss,” as he left.  Amanda was positive he gave her a subtle wink along with his nod.  She stood just a little too long watching the hallway after they’d turned the corner toward the elevators.
 *********************
Porter ran interference with the guard at Riker’s who tried to keep Rafe from hugging his little sister. He felt responsible for his friend being in prison for a crime she didn’t commit, and he wasn’t about to deny her the small comfort of a hug from her brother.
“You all right, Snot-rocket?”  Rafe asked, sitting down next to Frankie.
“Y-yeah,” Frankie stuttered, trying desperately not to cry.
Rafe pulled her head to his shoulder, and Porter signaled to the guard to let them be.
“Everybody sends their love. They’re pissed at you for tellin’ ‘em not to come, but they get it.”
“I can’t-“
“They know.  They treatin’ you OK in here?”
“Yeah.  It’s fine.  My lawyer knows some of the guards, and she has some clients in here, so…”
“Can’t say I’m too impressed with a lawyer whose clients are in prison.”
Frankie gave the tiniest laugh, then sniffled.  “She’s good. She’ll get me out of here.”
“Yeah, she will.  And if she don’t, me n’ the guys’ll stage a jailbreak.  Always wanted to do that.”
“Don’t even joke about that in here,” Frankie told him.
“Ain’t jokin’.  So listen, Porter only got us five minutes, so I don’t wanna waste it.  Just… you need anything?  You need me to do anything?”
“No, there’s nothing. Dean gave you the keys to my apartment?”
“Yeah.  I’ll take care of it for you until you get home.  You just hang in, all right?  Porter’s gonna find that kid.  I met your team at SVU, and they seem like they got their shit together.  We got you, OK?”
“OK.”
“By the way, I’m gonna marry that Amanda.”
“She’s way too good for a snot-rocket like you.  But you go ahead and try.”
 ********************
Things started to get strange about eight O’Clock the next morning.  Peter Stone got a call in his office.  Based on an anonymous tip, Detectives Carisi and Tutuola had picked up Juwon Jefferson and had him in custody.  And he was talking.
He was a different kid than Stone had seen on the tapes of his first interrogation.  For one thing, he was a mass of bruises and cuts.  For another, he was giving them real information. The attitude was still on full display, and he was definitely not happy to be there.  But at least they had him, and for whatever reason, he was ready to tell them everything he knew about Alan Canady.  In part, Stone believed his story that Canady had been a truly evil son of a bitch, and now that he was dead, Juwon could safely say so.  But there was no way that was the whole story.
“Yeah, man, I tol’ the Doc to go see the motherfucker, gave her the message he was gonna barbecue her boyfriend if she didn’t show up.  Ain’t nothin’ illegal ‘bout that.  I just delivered a message.”
“Did he pay you?”  Stone asked.
“Yeah, man, you think I play messenger boy for my health?”
“Why did he want to see Dr. Rojas?”
“He said he was gonna fuck her up.  Said he was gonna do hisself, make it look like she done it.  Guess that’s pretty much what he done, ain’t it?  That’s bad-ass, man.  Stabbin’ yo’self.  That’s cold.”
Stone rolled his eyes. This was all way too convenient. Out of the blue, they get an anonymous tip and this kid who hadn’t cooperated at all is suddenly telling them the exact same wildly implausible story the suspect told?  And he just happened to be covered with injuries?  No.  Somebody got to this kid, and he was either getting something huge out of this, or they had something big over him.  Either way, Stone wasn’t about to let Rojas walk on the word of this little tweaker alone.
“Why should I believe you?” Stone asked, looking hard at the kid.
“I don’t give a shit if you believe me.  It’s that rich bitch doctor sittin’ in Rikers, not me.”
The kid had talked quite a bit about Alan Canady’s rapes of the three women.  That, at least, they could prove.  The kid’s evidence gave them probable cause to test Canady’s DNA against the rape kits, which was being done right that moment.  Stone thought blackly that it wasn’t like it was hard to collect Canady’s DNA - it was pooled all over the floor in that cheap motel room. But that still didn’t prove who had killed Canady, and it didn’t answer why this kid was suddenly in custody and talking.  Stone was suspicious of anything this neat and easy.
 ****************
Later that day, Stone stopped by Barba’s office.  Barba was sitting at his desk, tapping a pen and staring off into space.
“Thinking deep legal thoughts?”  Stone grinned.
“Shallow ones, anyway. What can I do for you?”
“I wanna talk about this Rojas case.”
Barba frowned.  “You can’t talk to me about that case.”
“Not about the case itself, just…  Hypothetically, what would you say if you had a case with a very hard to find, reluctant, unreliable witness, who suddenly gets found by an ‘anonymous source’ and starts singing like a canary?”  Stone made himself comfortable in one of the chairs in front of Barba’s desk.
“I’d smell a rat. Especially if this suddenly cooperative witness is a junkie.”
“He is. Hypothetically.”
“Hypothetically. Look, I’m in an impossible spot here. You know that.  I know Francisca Rojas didn’t kill Alan Canady.”
“You don’t know that, and neither does anyone else except Canady.  And he’s not talking.”
“I have instincts, same as you.  And I know this woman.”
“You’ve known this woman for a whole month.  And you’re fucking her.  Tends to mess with the instincts, Barba.”
Rafael shot Stone an irritated look and gave a snort of annoyance.  “What, exactly, do you want from me here?  There’s no way she did it.  I know that.  But if you’re asking me whether you can believe this tweaker’s sudden conversion to the light, I’d say no.  So you get all the information you can out of him, and you check it all out, and you prove she didn’t do it with that evidence.”
“What the hell’s happened to everyone around here?  Since when are we in the business of proving someone didn’t do a crime?”  Stone snapped.
“Since always.  We prove the truth, not just what we want to be true.  That’s why I’m saying don’t buy the tweaker’s story.  I’d like Franci-  Dr. Rojas out of Riker’s today.  But you have a job to do, and that means you need to be right.”
“Thanks for nothing,” Stone smirked, getting up.
“That’s what I’m here for. Get her out.  Soon.  But do it the right way.”
Rafael was troubled.  The tweaker was back and now he was talking? What had she done?  Or what had been done on her behalf?
 **********
The DNA matched.  Alan Canady was the Pattern 20 rapist. Unfortunately, that didn’t prove who had killed him.  Nothing did. The autopsy was consistent with either Canady stabbing himself or someone else stabbing him; it was inconclusive either way.  And both his fingerprints and Frankie Rojas’s were on the knife.  True, Canady had no defensive wounds, but she could simply have gotten a lucky shot before he realized what was happening.  Because Barba’s building had no security cameras, there was no way to prove that Canady or Jefferson had somehow gotten in and stolen the knife.  From an evidence standpoint, that meant it was equally likely that either Frankie had killed Canady, or he had done it himself.
In the end, the Manhattan DA’s office had no choice but to drop the charges against Frankie Rojas.  With the tweaker kid’s testimony, there was simply too much reasonable doubt for Nikki Staines to work with.  Nikki had actually been in the office the day the decision was made, raising holy hell and making Peter Stone’s life miserable.  Stone wasn’t happy about any of it – he felt like they had been played by someone who had gotten to the tweaker kid, but he couldn’t prove it, and he had other cases he could prove.  So they dropped the charges and Nikki blew up the phones at Riker’s as she drove out to collect her client, making sure they would have her processed out and ready when Nikki arrived.
She called Dean Porter from her car.  “You heard?”
“Yeah.  Can I go pick her up?”
“I’m on my way now. But listen.  I’m never gonna look a gift horse in the mouth, but Stone thinks he got played, and I can’t blame him.  Is there anything I should know about that Jefferson kid?  It does seem like he had a pretty sudden, and violent, change of heart.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yeah, I’m sure you don’t. I just want to know I’m not gonna get any surprises, and my client isn’t either.”
“You won’t.  I swear to you, Nikki, it’s all above board.  The kid was telling the truth.”
“Yeah, but why was he telling the truth?”
“You know what?  Take the win.  It’s all good.”
“It better be.  You got a lot to lose these days.”
“Yeah, life is good. And I wouldn’t jeopardize that. We didn’t do anything to the tweaker kid that’s gonna hurt us.  Or you. Or Frankie.”
“You didn’t, huh? Then who’s ‘we’?”
“Did I say ‘we’?  I meant ‘I’.  Hey, Nikki, my other line is ringing.  I gotta answer that.  Nice working with you.”
***************
Frankie was pretty sure she was being set up.  She didn’t really like it, given what she’d just been through, but it was hard to find a basis to complain.  Her brother and Amanda had become very… close, and were both claiming that, since he was planning to fly back to Austin in the morning, it was their last opportunity to spend time together.  So, as badly as they felt about it – yeah, sure, she thought – they wondered whether Frankie would mind spending one more night at Barba’s.  Besides which, all her things were at Barba’s.  And they claimed already to have set it up with him.
Frankie dimly felt that it was bizarre for people who loved her to be worrying about romance, their own or hers, after she had just been in prison for murder.  But she was exhausted.  She’d barely eaten or slept in the five days since her arrest, and she’d been in an emotional spin-cycle the entire time.  The truth was, she wanted two things.  She wanted to take a shower for about a week, followed by a soak in a bathtub for a month.  And she wanted Barba.
She hadn’t spoken to him since her arrest.  He’d retained Nikki for her, and she’d had messages from him through Porter, but that had been all he could do.  Now that she was about to see him again, she was in a turmoil of different emotions.  She felt physically hideous and soiled, and she felt emotionally battered and horribly ashamed.  She thought she was far too needy to be going to stay with a man she knew as little as she knew Barba.  But, apparently, she was the only one who felt that way, because he was waiting for her when Nikki pulled up at the curb in front of his building.
He looked absolutely delectable to her.  Gorgeous and kind and caring and opening his arms to her before she was all the way out of the car, even though all she had to wear home was the terrible sweats they’d given her at the M.E.’s office when they’d taken her bloody clothes.  Nikki smiled broadly at Rafael as he moved to push the car door closed, cradling Frankie in his arms.
“Thank you,” he mouthed.
“My pleasure,” she replied, waving.  She liked the idea of Barba owing her one.
Rafael gently guided Frankie through the door to the lobby, and held her while they waited for the elevator.
“Thank you for letting me stay with you,” she mumbled into his shirt.  She hadn’t looked at him, really, as she’d climbed out of Nikki’s car, just put her arms around him and buried her face in his chest.
“I would have come to your place, if you hadn’t come here.  Even with your brother there.  I want to help.  I’ve felt so fucking useless these past days…”
She squeezed him, hard. “You called Nikki.  You shouldn’t even have done that.  That was everything.”
“I know you didn’t kill him, Francisca.”
“No, you don’t.  No one does, except me and him.  But I didn’t.  I swear it.”
“Still arguing with me…” he said with a grin, as he led her into the elevator, still with her arms clasped to him and her face buried. He wasn’t sure what to make of that. It was wonderful to have her in his arms again, to be able to comfort her as he’d been aching to for days.  But the way she was clinging to him spoke of a depth of fear and anguish that he’d only guessed at.  He was intensely grateful she had come to him so that he could help her through it.  He was honored that his fresa, usually so dauntless and fiery, and now so crushed and wounded, would allow herself to be this vulnerable with him.  He vaguely realized that he would do anything for this woman in his arms, but he paid little attention to the thought, as he thought about what he could do to help her begin to recover from her ordeal.
She released him from her arms when he closed the door behind them, but stayed right next to him.
“I’m guessing you’d like the longest, hottest shower in the history of the world,” he suggested.
“I’d give my left arm for that,” she sighed softly.
“No charge for guests. You go get in the shower, and I’ll bring you a drink.”
“Do you happen to have any scotch?”
Rafael couldn’t help but laugh at that.  Everyone knew about Rafael Barba and scotch.  He was a little amused by this evidence that they really hadn’t known each other that long.  “I have scotch.”
When he had poured a scotch for each of them, he hesitated outside the door to his bathroom for a moment. He could hear the water running, and see billows of steam floating lazily into the bedroom.  But he was suddenly unsure what she was expecting. Did she want privacy?  Should he wait for her to come out?  Well, he’d told her he was going to bring her a drink.  Besides, he realized, the steam was escaping into the bedroom because she had left the door ajar.  He knocked tentatively and pushed the door open a little.
“Francisca?  I brought your drink.”
She didn’t respond. He noticed the sweatshirt and pants she’d been wearing wadded up on the floor.
“What do you want me to do with these sweats?”
It took her a second to answer.  “Bonfire,” she finally said in a choked voice.
He was sure he heard a sob. He didn’t hesitate, but stepped into the room, set his drink on the counter, and pulled the shower curtain back just enough to see her.  Her hands were splayed on the tile wall and she was leaning on both arms, head hanging, crying hard and trying to be silent about it.
“Oh, mi fresa,” he said, pulling the curtain back and stepping, fully clothed, into the shower to take her into his arms.  She instantly let out a groan of agony, turning into him and clinging to him as she sobbed into his shoulder.  He held her drink just outside the spray of the shower.
For long minutes, he just held her and let her cry, while the hot water cascaded down and soothed her. He didn’t realize he had begun to hum softly to her until she turned her face into his neck, muttering, “That’s nice.”
When she seemed to be done crying, he moved them a bit to the side and held the glass to her.  “Here, drink this,” he said softly, not letting go of her.  She downed its contents in one gulp and handed it back to him.  He smiled.
When he felt her arms loosen around him, he reached behind her and set the glass down on the shower’s built-in tile shelf.  He took a bottle of shampoo and poured a little into his hand.  Moving her just a bit backward out of the spray, he began to shampoo her hair.  She closed her eyes and tilted her head back, the slightest smile touching her lips. When he was done, he moved her under the spray to rinse her hair and began to soap her body.  He tried not to make it sexual, given the situation and the fact that he was still wearing all of his now-soaked clothes.  But it wasn’t easy.  He wasn’t sure, but it seemed like she moved into his hands from time to time. He conditioned her hair when he’d finished washing her, and moved her once again under the spray to rinse out the conditioner.
“MMmmmmmm,” she said. “This feels so nice.”
“That’s the point,” he said, leaning down without thinking and kissing her.
He was just preparing to be concerned about pushing her when she reached to put a hand behind his head and wind her fingers in his wet hair, pulling his mouth harder on hers.  After thoroughly kissing him, she looked into his eyes for the first time since she’d arrived.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.  And I mean that in a number of different ways. I like having you here, and I’m here for you.”
“I know,” she said.  “Can we take a bath?”
“Of course we can.”
“And… will you please take your clothes off?  I don’t care what you do when you’re alone, but I refuse to take a bath with a clothed man.”
Rafael put his forehead to Frankie’s.  “No, I won’t take them off.  But you’re welcome to, if you want.”
“Oh, you’re a pain in the ass, Barba.”  She kissed him again and began undressing him.
When she had his clothes off, he quickly washed his hair and turned the dial that turned off the shower and began to fill the tub.  Pulling back the curtain, he picked up the pile of wet clothes and wrung them out as best he could, then tossed them across the bathroom into the sink to be dealt with later.
“You get comfortable.” He said.  “I’ll be right back.”
Rafael quickly padded out to his kitchen and retrieved the bottle of scotch, bringing it to the bathroom and setting it down next to the tub where Frankie was pouring some shampoo under the water to make bubbles.  He took his glass from the counter, lifted hers from the shelf in the shower, and put them on the edge of the bathtub, then stepped into the water. She moved to let him get seated behind her, then scooted between his legs and relaxed against his chest.
He poured some scotch into her glass and handed it to her, then picked up his own.  He wrapped one arm around her and she held his arm with hers. They sat in the rapidly-filling tub and sipped in silence.
When the tub was full, Frankie used her foot to turn off the water and turned herself so that she was lying on her side, her cheek on his chest, and could put both arms around him.
“I love you,” she murmured, eyes closed and smiling.
Rafael kissed the top of her head, wondering whether she could possibly have meant what she’d just said. She lay quietly, seemingly perfectly satisfied with no response other than a kiss.  She’d had two drinks – he had only poured a couple of fingers each time, but he had no idea when the last time she’d slept or eaten was, and for all he knew, she was asleep right this second.  Maybe she didn’t even know she’d said it.  He decided that’s what it was.  His chest felt warm anyway, and it wasn’t just because of the scotch.
He thought he dozed a little, lying there holding her in the hot, bubbly water.  He was gently nudged back into consciousness when she shifted between his legs and mumbled, “It’s getting cold.”
“You want to put in some more hot water?”
“Mmmmmm, I want to be in bed.  I don’t want to get out of this tub and move to the bed.  I just want to be in bed without that part.”
“I’d like to do that for you, mi fresa, but I don’t think I possess that particular skill.”
She inhaled deeply and slowly exhaled.  “OK, we’ll do it the hard way.”
They helped each other to stand and climb out of the tub, and Rafael wrapped Frankie in a deliciously large, fluffy towel.  She was too sleepy to comment, but she made a mental note to compliment him on his taste in towels – and scotch – in the morning.  Neither bothered much with their hair – Rafael just toweled his off and Frankie twisted hers into a quick bun on top of her head.  They quickly brushed their teeth, leaning on one another, and were cuddled together in bed very soon thereafter, arms around one another and her head cradled on his shoulder.
In the soft light coming through the window, Frankie looked up at Rafael.  She lifted her lips to kiss his jaw and he turned his head to take her lips between his.  He was a bit surprised when she subtly shifted her body and opened her mouth to his, sliding her hand down his side to his hip and thigh, angling her caress until she was softly cupping him in her hand.
“Barba?”
“Hmmmm?”
“Will you please make love to me?”
“Anything for you.”
He followed her lead, going slowly and touching her softly, never taking his mouth from hers, even when whispering endearments and praise.  Her soft moan as she came with him inside her was pure enchantment, and he was almost positive it contained a whispered, “I love you.”

1. Vaccination And Immunization Are The Same
 What the vet says:
“Prevention is better than cure. Vaccination is the way we cause animals to become resistant (immune) to infections. A vaccine consists of a modified or killed virus or bacterium. It is prepared in such a way that the body’s defenses recognise it as a threat and react to it as if it were a real infection. The body will produce antibodies which are proteins which recognise and attach to chemicals on the surface of the organism, killing it. These antibodies are then available to kill any of the real infection organisms the animal might pick up during its life. They are lost gradually and the body needs occasional reminders (booster vaccinations) to keep the antibody level high enough to prevent real infections. Vaccination reactions are very rare. A booster is recommended each year.“
Our issue with this advice:
The body doesn’t react to a vaccine the same way it would to the real disease.
When exposed to a real virus, the body forms immunity by filing that information away in memory cells. The memory cells, called cellular immunity, are responsible for mounting a quick attack the next time they are faced with the same disease and the body, armed with the knowledge the memory cells have stored away, quickly neutralizes the disease by triggering circulating antibodies. This is why humans only get chicken pox once and dogs can only get parvovirus once. After the first episode, they’re protected for life.
Vaccines try to emulate this, but they don’t do a complete job.
Vaccines stimulate circulating antibodies, called humoral immunity, and they bypass the memory cells. This creates an artificial immunity called humoral bias and this essentially turns the immune system inside out.
To learn more about this effect, read our article on Vaccines And The Immune System.
But the real problem with this statement is their desire for antibody levels to be high. High antibody levels mean high levels of circulating antibodies – or humoral bias.
The higher the titer, the more chronically inflamed the body is.
This humoral bias and resulting chronic inflammation result in many of the autoimmune diseases we commonly see in dogs today: allergies, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, bowel disease and many, many more. Vaccine reactions may be rare, but the risk and severity of chronic disease that vaccines cause increase with each and every vaccine given.
2. Vaccinating Puppies At 6 Weeks Of Age
 What the vet says:
“Your puppy vaccination course should be started at 6 weeks of age. A primary vaccination is first given and a booster 2-4 weeks later. This course must be completed before your puppy is fully protected. Unfortunately, the protection provided by vaccinating is not life-long and hence an annual booster is recommended. At XXXX veterinary clinic we will send you out an annual reminder to ensure your pet is kept up to date and protected.”
Our issue with this advice:
Vaccinating a puppy at 6 weeks? According to veterinary vaccine researcher Dr Jean Dodds, only 30% of puppies will be protected from a vaccine given at 6 weeks of age.
100% of them will be exposed to disease when taken to the vet clinic for that shot.
Moreover, vaccines create immune suppression for 10 to 14 days.
So, choosing to vaccinate a puppy at 6 weeks means exposing him to the most disease-ridden location he could possibly be in – the vet clinic – while creating immune suppression at the same time. Your puppy is much more likely to get the disease he is being vaccinated for, and all in exchange for a 30% chance the vaccine will work.
That’s a pretty high gamble with a puppy’s life.
The reason the vaccine is unlikely to work at that young age is because the puppy is protected against disease with maternal antibodies – immunity passed down from his mother. This protection wanes over time, but is still pretty strong at 6 weeks. That’s why in most cases the vaccine doesn’t work at this age: the maternal antibodies are strong enough to block the vaccine.
Here is problem number two with vaccinating at that age: the maternal antibodies will be less effective after the vaccine is given because vaccines cause immune suppression.
We also object to this statement: “This course must be completed before your puppy is fully protected.” There are two problems with this statement actually.
You can’t be partially protected: immunity is like being a virgin, you either are or you aren’t. Either the immune system has filed that information away or it hasn’t: there is no grey area, you are either immune or you are not.
As for the other problem, a course of vaccines is not necessary: it only takes ONE vaccine to protect a puppy – ONE AND DONE.
For more information on this, you might want to read Taking The Risk Out Of Puppy Shots.
3. Lifelong Immunity
 What the vet says:
“Primary pet vaccinations do not cover your animal for the rest of their life, so annual booster vaccinations are required for continued protection.”
Our issue with this advice:
Wow, bad grammar aside, there’s one very big problem with this statement – a monumental problem of biblical proportions!
Not only do core vaccines last for years, some for the life of the animal, vets have known about this for about forty years!
We won’t even go into why annual vaccination is a very, very bad choice – because vaccinating every three years or every five years is also a bad choice based on unsound science.
Why would you vaccinate every year if the minimum immunity starts at 7 years? Why put your dog at risk?
Nuff said.
4. Revaccination Is Backed By Research
 What the vet says:
“At XXXX Veterinary Hospital, we are aware of some of the controversy currently surrounding immunization protocols. However, until industry leaders and experts, such as the vaccine manufacturers and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), arrive at some definitive conclusions, we believe it to be in the best interest of your pet and the general public to continue to adhere to our established immunization protocols. We recommend that your pet should receive annual boosters.”
Our issue with this advice:
Controversy? Industry leaders and experts?
Here is the crux of the problem: these vets are waiting for the vaccine manufacturers, AAHA and the AVMA to decide how often to vaccinate. Don’t you think that all of these entities have a financial interest in how often you vaccinate your dog?  Are they capable of making an unbiased recommendation?
Apparently, they aren’t.
The report of the American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Taskforce in JAAHA (39 March/April 2003) includes the following information for vets:
Misunderstanding, misinformation and the conservative nature of our profession have largely slowed adoption of protocols advocating decreased frequency of vaccination; Immunological memory provides durations of immunity for core infectious diseases that far exceed the traditional recommendations for annual vaccination.
This is supported by a growing body of veterinary information  as well-developed epidemiological vigilance in human medicine that indicates immunity induced by vaccination is extremely long lasting and, in most cases, lifelong.
And the American Animal Hospital Association’s own Preventive Healthcare Guidelines state:
Tailor vaccination protocols to your pet. While some vaccines, like rabies, are required by law because of the risk to humans, others may be necessary for your pet’s lifestyle. In some scenarios, a titer to previous vaccines can be measured to help decide if a booster vaccination is necessary. Your veterinarian will know what’s best for your pet.
If you would like to read more about how vets arbitrarily chose the period of three years for revaccination, even though they knew back in 2003 that vaccines lasted likely for the life of the dog, read Lifelong Immunity And The AAHA Revaccination Guidelines.
5. Your Vet Is A Vaccine Expert
What the vet says:
“Annual boosters are painless for your pet, and help to fight off contagious illnesses throughout the year. The staff at XXXX Veterinary Clinic are expertly trained in the welfare of your pet.”
Our issue with this advice:
Any vet who advocates annual vaccinations – or even uses the term booster – is clearly not expertly trained in immunization or the welfare of your pet.
In fact, most vets are woefully inept when it comes to understanding immunity. (We already talked about this above)
They are very good at giving vaccines – yet most vets are not taught very much about immunity at all.
Perhaps that’s because immunity is taught by the vaccine manufacturers. It’s no wonder that vets are well armed with needles yet lack the knowledge or motivation to question just what damage those needles are doing.
And even if they acknowledge the research that proves annual vaccines are unnecessary, most are not willing to lose the profits those yearly visits bring in.
If you would like to learn more about how little vets feel they were taught about vaccination, and the diseases they’ve seen vaccines cause in their patients, read our ground-breaking featured article, Vets On Vaccines.
In the end, it doesn’t matter whether vets continue to dispense this bad advice out of ignorance or for financial gain (most veterinary practices earn 14% of their income from vaccines). Either way, the bad advice is out there and dog owners – and dogs – will fall victim to that bad advice every day.
If you find your vet dispensing bad vaccine advice, don’t ignore it.  Perhaps reading and sharing What Every Vet (And Pet Owner) Should Know About Vaccines will help you both to begin understanding that immunity involves more than just shots and boosters.

Note
What’s your opinion of Dr Jean W Dodds’ vaccination protocol? I’m looking into breeders for Golden Retrievers but it seems every time I find one that has all the right hallmarks (appropriate health testing, puppy contract, socialization training, etc) they recommend the Dodds protocol. I’m wary; I want to give my animals the best possible care and denying them life-saving vaccines just doesn’t seem like the answer. Have I misunderstood how it works? Thank you for your time! :)
It’s been awhile so I could be wrong, but I don’t remember it involving denying vaccines, just vaccinating later than most.
I personally am not a fan of vaccinating dogs when they’re super young. 8 weeks is the earliest I would ever do it, and her starts at 9 weeks so it’s not that far off. Vaccinating too young can cause the dog to be more exposed because it can mess with the resistance that their mother has given them.

You’re watching TV and hear it again — scratch, scratch, chew, chew. Yes, that sound can be annoying, but that’s nothing compared to how your dog feels trying to get relief from itchy skin or related ailments. So, how do you relieve itchy skin on dogs? One of the best ways to do it is through diet. Let’s look at the best dog food for itchy skin.
First, why do dogs get itchy skin?

Before we break down the best dog food for itchy skin, let’s look at why dogs get itchy. Just like when people get an itch, there are multiple possible reasons for dogs — a major one being allergies. But how to tell? Signs of allergies include itching, rash and hair loss, according to Doug Knueven, DVM, a holistic vet with Beaver Animal Clinic in Beaver, Pennsylvania.
Jean Dodds, DVM, founder of Hemopet, based in Garden Grove, California, says crusty sores with intermittent healing and acute breakouts can be signs of chronic skin infections.
“The most common cause of itchiness and skin self-trauma are allergic reactions to flea bites, environmental allergens and food allergy,” adds Sean J. Delaney, DVM, MS, DACVN (board certified Veterinary Nutritionist of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition), who operates Davis Veterinary Medical Consulting in Davis, California. “Collectively, these allergens work together to cause pruritus, the fancy word used for itchiness, in allergic dogs. Often eliminating or controlling even one of these allergens can lead to a reduction or elimination of signs.”
Dr. Dodds also cites Malassezia yeast infections, dry flaky skin and dandruff as causes of chronic itching, as well as chewing and licking feet.
Whether your dog has all-over itching or hot spots, which Dr. Knueven defines as “just an area of intensely itchy skin,” not treating the cause of your dog’s itching can make things worse, including pyoderma — another fancy word, this time for skin infections.
“Ignoring frequent or aggressive scratching can lead to inflammation and self-trauma and subsequent infection with bacteria and yeast present on the body or in the environment that normally is kept at bay by intact and healthy skin,” Dr. Delaney says.
And those problems can go beyond the physical: “Painful sores can lead to serious stress and behavioral issues with the constant skin irritation and itching,” Dr. Dodds says.

While topical treatments may provide relief (or even a toy to get your dog’s mind temporarily focused elsewhere), don’t overlook the benefits that come from the inside-out approach. Namely, using food and supplements to help heal the skin while nourishing the body.
“Typically once flea bite preventive strategies are used (e.g., topical flea adulticide), one will try and see if addressing any underlying food allergies will help reduce scratching,” Dr. Delaney says. “This is done — as environmental allergens often cannot be completely avoided — and treatment is more challenging.”
But where to begin when it comes to the best dog food for itchy skin? Veterinarians describe multiple approaches. “Grain- and gluten- free foods are wise to start with, plus limiting meats and fowl to grass-fed rather than grain-fed,” according to Dr. Dodds.
“If skin issues are just a poor-quality coat or skin flakiness, a change to another commercial food slightly richer in essential nutrients that support skin health may be indicated,” Dr. Delaney says. “Key essential nutrients supporting skin health include protein, amino acids (especially an often limiting one, methionine), linoleic acid (the essential fatty acid), vitamin A, some B vitamins and trace minerals like zinc.”
When it comes to foods used to heal that itch, a discussion with your vet about your dog is likely in order because there is clearly no one answer — or cause. “It is important to realize that the protein from animal meats, poultry and fish, as well as from plants such as legumes, tubers and grains can all cause an allergic reaction,” Dr. Delaney says.
And finding what works may not be a case of one and done. “Rotate food sources every four to six weeks but not more often than every two weeks to help induce immune tolerance,” recommends Dr. Dodds.
How to switch your dog to find the best dog food for itchy skin
What is the best way to switch your dog’s diet? Photography ©mediaphotos | Getty Images.
When you change your dog’s diet in order to find the best dog food for itchy skin, avoid going cold turkey. “A switch to a raw diet, or any food change, should be done gradually,” Dr. Knueven says. “Start by adding ¼ the amount of the recommended daily amount of the new food and ¾ of the current diet. After a week, increase it to 50/50. After another week, go to ¾ new food and ¼ previous food. After a week, give just the new food.”
Dr. Delaney has another tip for transitioning to the best dog food for itchy skin. “The effects on the GI tract of a sudden diet change can be minimized by ensuring the new food truly is novel for the pet, and the fat, fiber and moisture levels are kept somewhat similar to the previous diet.”
What not to feed a dog with itchy skin

Then there’s the flip side of determining what to feed a dog plagued by dermatological issues — what not to feed. Again, this can vary. Dr. Dodds recommends an Eastern medicine approach. “Avoid pro-inflammatory ‘hot’ foods in Chinese medicine like chicken and venison, plus related fats, oils and flavorings. Calming foods are turkey and white-colored fish. Avoid shellfish generally.”
Dr. Delaney recommends the above-mentioned novel approach when it comes to determining what food types to avoid. “Even if feeding an uncommonly fed allergen like venison works in many dogs, if a specific allergic dog has always been fed venison, a diet that uses a common food like chicken may be a better choice if the chicken is ‘novel’ or new to them.
“A food that has never been fed to a dog or that is novel to them is often fed in a limited-ingredient diet when food allergy is suspected or needs to be treated,” Dr. Delaney adds. “The ingredients are limited to reduce the potential number of allergens the dog is exposed to.
Finally, Dr. Knueven likes the DIY approach, preferring a balanced raw diet. “I think the benefit is especially apparent for dogs with allergies,” he says.
Should you supplement?

Along with changing the diet, you can also look into supplements that may help. “Fish oil supplementation can help decrease the inflammation of allergies, and probiotics can help rebalance the immune system,” Dr. Knueven says.
However, Dr. Delaney says, “At times, fatty acid supplements may be suggested, but it is best to select a food that already has an appropriate fatty acid profile than try to supplement a food that doesn’t.”
Dr. Dodds suggests oral supplements, as well as a topical one to help Scooby stop scratching. “Dogs must have plenty of omega-3 fatty acids plus some omega-6 fatty acids; coconut oil in moderation (as it’s high in fat) and apple cider vinegar in the food.” Topically, Dr. Dodds recommends green tea on sores and for foot soaks.
Dr. Delaney cautions that some human foods intended to help might actually hurt. “It is important to remember that any enjoyed treats should be cautiously used in case they introduce food allergens that are not novel or tolerated in a food-allergic dog.”
When to expect results
How soon after switching to a diet to combat itchy skin should you expect to see results? Photography ©ThamKC | Getty Images
Just as people want to see pounds lost on the scale the second day of a diet, when it comes to the best dog food for itchy skin, we often want immediate results after making a change in diet or adding a supplement. Veterinarians cited as little as a few days up to several months, depending on your dog’s condition.
“If there is an underlying food allergy, then response can take up to 12 weeks in some cases, with 8 weeks being more common,” Dr. Delaney says. “If the skin issue is solely related to poor skin or coat quality due to a diet that isn’t meeting a pet’s specific needs for an essential nutrient like a fatty acid, improvement may be noticed in as early as several weeks.”
Hopefully, this information serves as food for thought when it comes to giving your furry friend some relief. It might just result in the only scratching is you scratching his belly or behind his ears.

Veterinarians point out that any breed or dog can have allergies, but some may be more prone to skin issues. There are a couple different forms of “skin deep” traits that may boost allergy propensity.
“Dogs with white or lighter coat colors can be more susceptible because of the effects of sunlight exposure,” says W. Jean Dodds, DVM.
Sean J. Delaney, DVM, MS, DACVN, Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, cited breeds with extra skin folds as more likely to have skin diseases or issues. “If a pet lover is considering a specific pure breed as a new family member, it is best to discuss this concern, as well as any others that may be more prevalent, with their veterinarian.”
Dr. Dodds adds that some underlying diseases can make some dogs more prone to skin issues, with the following as just some examples:
Endocrinological — Hypothyroidism and thyroiditis
Hyperactive adrenal function — Cushing’s disease
Systemic autoimmune diseases — Discoid lupus, systemic lupus, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and Sjögren (or Sjögren’s) syndrome
Fleas or food — which is the foe?
While either cause is painful, a trip to the vet is the first step in determining whether your dog’s itching and scratching is caused by fleas or food.
“Both can lead to self-trauma and infection,” says Sean J. Delaney, DVM, MS, DACVN, Board Certified Veterinary Nutritionist from the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. “The veterinarian will then treat any infection as well as address the root cause that led to the infection.”
Doug Knueven, DVM, a holistic veterinarian, starts with the “what’s most likely” approach.
“Flea allergy is the most common skin allergy,” Dr. Knueven says. “If an animal has fleas and is itching, I consider it a flea allergy until proven otherwise. The best way to rule out a food allergy is to switch the dog to a novel diet for eight weeks. If the skin clears, then he was allergic to something in the previous diet.”
Your dog can also be tested to pinpoint any allergens. W. Jean Dodds, DVM, describes the two types: “Serum-based environmental allergy screening (trees, weeds, grasses, pollens, fungi, molds, dust, fleas, etc.) and saliva-based (not serum-based) food-sensitivity testing.”

Are grain free diets hurting our dogs?
Last month, the FDA issued an unusual public report that’s causing lots of concern.  I’ve received many questions about it, and I've heard some not-quite-accurate interpretations floating around, so I decided an article was needed.
What we know so far
First, if you’d rather not read the FDA report yourself, here’s what it says:
The FDA has tracked reports of a few animals (30 dogs) with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dog breeds not usually known to be prone to it.  (If you read it, a few cats were reported as well, but they appear not to have been investigated further).  Nearly all of the affected dogs were reported to have been eating dominantly or exclusively a grain-free diet.  Of those thirty, eight were tested for taurine levels (more on that below), and four had clinically low levels.  The other four had normal levels.
By itself, this evidence is quite weak.  First, the number of dogs involved (thirty) is insanely small compared to the total number of dogs eating a grain free diet in the United States.  Second, a correlation between grain-free diets and DCM is not at all the same thing as saying that grain-free diets are causing DCM.  Correlational evidence is tricky like that, because even the most seemingly straightforward correlations may be deceptively misleading.
But it turns out that there’s a little bit more to it than this single report.
Other evidence
Veterinary cardiologists were the first people to sound the alarm about a possible concern, so they have been looking into this issue for the past year or so.  Two studies have been finalized so far. One study focused on Golden Retrievers with DCM (Goldens are not particularly prone to DCM, so the study was undertaken to figure out why they were suddenly showing up in cardiology offices).  Affected Goldens tended to have been eating grain-free diets, and their blood taurine levels were low (more on this below).  This suggests that Golden Retrievers (at least some of them) may have a metabolic anomaly that puts them at increased risk of heart disease when they eat a grain-free diet. A second study looked at multiple dog breeds already affected with DCM, and found that those eating grain-free diets tended to have more severe disease than those who had been eating grain-inclusive diets.  This suggests that grain-free diets can be a contributory factor of disease severity in any affected dog. Taken together, these studies suggest a more definitive link than the weak correlation we'd see if we only looked at the FDA report. We're still a fair distance from saying that grain-free diets directly cause DCM, but there does appear to be some sort of link.
What is dilated cardiomyopathy?
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a relatively common cause of heart disease in certain breeds of dogs, and a rare cause of heart disease in cats.  Unlike in humans, where the primary cause of heart disease is a blockage of blood vessels, in this case the primary problem is with the heart muscle.  Cardiac muscle in an affected animal becomes abnormal, and as a result, the heart both dilates over time and becomes less able to pump blood effectively.  It is a serious disease, and generally results in heart failure and death if the underlying cause cannot be corrected and reversed.
Dilated cardiomyopathy in breeds known to be at increased genetic risk is NOT part of the disease development discussion, although it is possible that grain-free diets may make the problem worse in these dogs.   Genetically at-risk breeds include: Boxers, Great Danes, Bull Mastiffs, Irish Wolfhounds, Newfoundlands, German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Cocker Spaniels, and Portuguese Water Dogs.
What is taurine?
Taurine is an amino acid primarily found in meat (as opposed to plant sources).  Low taurine levels have long been known to increase DCM risk in dogs and cats, which is the reason why all cat foods are now supplemented with extra taurine. Not all dogs or cats who develop DCM have low blood taurine levels, but dogs and cats with low blood taurine levels are at higher risk for DCM.
So what does this mean?
It is far from clear just how serious of an issue this is at this point, nor exactly what the causal factor might be.  Researchers are currently focusing their energy on whether potatoes, sweet potatoes, and legumes (such as lentils) might be directly or indirectly harming the cardiac muscle over time when they're fed in large quantities.  This theory arose because, in grain-free diets, it’s usually ingredients like these that form the primary carbohydrate source of the diet.  That said, both the nature and severity of the possible link is far from clear, and it's quite likely the causative factor, once found, will be less straightforward than this.
It is important to realize that the vast majority of dogs eating grain free food do NOT seem to have developed any problems.  Most of my patients eat grain-free diets at this point, because what was once an uncommon food choice has become much more popular in the last few years.  I have not personally seen any cases of DCM in breeds not known to be high-risk for it.  Of course, I am only one practitioner, and whether I see a problem or not has no bearing on whether the problem exists.  But I’d still like to point out that this problem is still uncommon.
Dr. Jean Dodds, a respected veterinary researcher, has published a more extensive article about how to interpret the data, which you can read through if you are interested.
But I thought grains in dog food were bad.  Does this mean dogs SHOULD be eating grains??
We don't know how to answer that question just yet, but it's likely that the answer is not that simple. In the last decade or so, grain free dog foods have become more and more popular.  There are two reasons for this.  One is that a large subset of dogs simply cannot tolerate grains in their diet, as they develop either food allergies or chronic gastrointestinal issues when they eat them. The second reason many dogs eat grain-free is a feeling of discomfort with feeding grains on the part of their families.  Over the years, many people have pointed out that corn and wheat are commonly used as cheap protein sources for dog food (because grains are cheaper than meat).  Thus, pet food manufacturers can produce dog food for significantly less money, and still meet all Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) requirements for protein and other nutrients. To many of us, stuffing a dog full of cheap grains seems less about the health of our dogs than an economically efficient shortcut.  Over time, grains in dog food have come to symbolize dog food that is cheap and less ideal for our dogs.
This cost-of-manufacturing issue aside, dog foods with grains in them are not necessarily bad.  Whole grains such as brown rice, oats, and quinoa can be quite as nutrient rich for our dogs as they are for us, and there is no reason to suspect that dogs without adverse reactions are unable to digest them. Does this apply to all grain free diets, or are some more problematic than others? While the FDA did not list any particular brands of at-risk food, cardiologists have listed a couple of diets as being possibly implicated.  One is a pork and squash diet, and the other a kangaroo and lentil formula.  We do not know why these diets might be problematic, but if this sounds like your dog's diet, you may wish to switch to something else for the time being.
Ok, so research will continue.  What do we do to protect our dogs in the meantime?
You have a number of options.   First, as the number of dogs affected seems quite small, if you like the diet you're currently feeding, and it is not one of the diets listed in the paragraph above, you can simply continue feeding it while you wait to see what happens.  The FDA is not recommending that dogs stop eating grain-free diets based on the little bit that we know.  If you go this route, it would be a good idea to at least add some cooked meat to your dog's diet, as meat may have some protective effect (meat is a good source of taurine, and adding whole foods to kibble is a good step to take with your dog's food anyway).   A wait and see approach is not advised in some cases, however.  If you own a Golden Retriever, it behooves you to take at least one of the preventive steps below, as Goldens may be more at risk for this problem than other breeds.   Also, if you own a dog known to be at-risk for DCM, while grain-free diets will not cause DCM in your dog, it might make things worse should DCM develop.  Thus, you may consider switching diets if your dog is known to be at-risk for DCM.
The first obvious option you have, assuming your dog has no adverse reactions, is to switch from a grain-free to a grain-inclusive diet.  Not all grain-inclusive diets are good-quality, so you will need to navigate labels to find the ideal diet for your dog.
If you particularly like your dog’s food, or if you switched your dog to a grain-free diet for medical reasons (such as food allergies, weight gain, or chronic gastrointestinal issues), adding grains back in doesn’t make a lot of sense.  In that case, you can have an ultrasound (called an echocardiogram) done of your dog’s heart to make sure it’s functioning normally.  You can also have your dog's blood taurine level measured to make sure it’s adequate.
If neither testing nor a diet change sounds reasonable, you can also supplement your dog’s diet with taurine.  Taurine is fairly cheap and is believed to be safe long term at a dose of up to 250 mg per day.  Higher doses (500 mg and up) may be helpful for affected dogs in the short term, but it’s unknown how safe that higher dosing is in the long-term. If you're reading this blog, I know that your pet is a treasured member of your family, and that all you want to do is give him or her the best life possible.  To hear that a feeding choice you made specifically to help your dog may turn out to instead be harmful is...jarring, to say the least.  That's my reaction to the news, at any rate. Going forward, bear in mind that this issue is unlikely to be as simplistic as some news reports make it seem.  There are known health issues associated with grains (some dogs can't tolerate them), and now it looks like there is a health issue associated with some grain-free foods as well.  Until researchers figure out a common thread to tie these cases together and give us some clarity, we're all going to be stumbling in the dark for a bit. If you'd like help navigating a path forward for your dog, and your dog is a current patient of ours, give us a call and we'll help you figure out the best steps to take.

Can Inflammation Ever Be Good for the Body?
Tumblr media
Oftentimes when we discuss inflammation on Dr. Dodds’ Pet Health Resource Blog, we focus on the bad chronic inflammation that could result in long-term diseases. Flipping the conversation on its head: can inflammation ever be good for the body? Yes; it can.
Acute inflammation (short-term) is the body’s defense system protecting itself from an injury or infection. Think about a cut on your skin. You may put a bandage on it or maybe some antibacterial cream. No matter what, you will more than likely have short term inflammation signaled by redness and slight swelling. This is the body rushing blood, fluid and proteins to the cut, which generates swelling and heat to protect and repair damaged tissue. This reaction is called the “Triple Response of Lewis” that occurs from an injury to the skin, which produces an initial red area, followed by a flare around that area, and then a wheal. It is due to the release of histamine. The outcome is setting the stage for healing. If the cut does not heal or gets worse, you should consult a doctor for yourself or veterinarian for your companion pets.
If you or your companion pet twist a joint like an ankle, the body surrounds the area with inflammatory swelling to prevent further injury. It should eventually heal over a few days. You should definitely take it easy on the injured area to speed up the healing process and make the pain go away. The opposite of acute joint injury is chronic tissue inflammation, which predisposes to infection and eventually, if not addressed, can lead to obesity and even cancer. These injuries need prompt medical attention.
With pets, it would be best to go straight to your veterinarian since they could have bruised or broken a bone.
Fever is another inflammatory example of the body’s natural defense mechanism against any foreign invaders. In this instance, white blood cells spit out interleukins (a group of cytokine molecules that regulate the body’s cellular immune response to help fight bacteria. If a fever spikes to a dangerous level that may compromise the brain, we clearly need to consult a doctor or veterinarian. However, a short-term low-level fever is the body working to help set the stage for healing.
We have known that exercising is good for the body, brain and emotional state for centuries. The Greeks coveted muscular bodies. Colloquialisms we use these days include “ripped” or “cut” to describe a muscular body. Those words are definitely apropos – as we rip it apart to cause it to regenerate.
Think about it, a new workout routine or a particular exercise is first general soreness, which then signals progress. This soreness comes from natural muscle cell inflammation and damage. Inflammation rushes immune cells to the location to those sore areas to repair the muscle damage. In fact, lack of an adequate inflammatory response contributes to poor muscle regeneration.
We know that exercise helps combat obesity, which results from the chronic cellular oxidative stress of inflammation that results in disease. So, exercise – which produces good inflammation – then has an anti-inflammatory effect by helping to control weight.
Flipping the Inflammation Protocol
For years, the typical health care protocol was to suppress inflammation. The arsenal of treatment options that are available and still used include acetaminophen such as Tylenol to reduce fevers, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) like ibuprofen/Advil, or steroids. The biggest conundrum has been the side effects with each of these therapies. Acetaminophen could damage the liver, ibuprofen could cause gastrointestinal bleeding, and steroids could create a number of issues like weight gain, and adrenal or kidney damage. Researchers are actively studying how to suppress inflammation without generating these deleterious problems.
Indeed, it has been known for a long time that excess anti-inflammatory medication actually slows the wound healing of acute tissue inflammation. So now the question becomes: how can we utilize the positive effects and control the negative effects of tissue inflammation?
Scientists are also thinking “outside of the box” of suppression: perhaps by inflaming another part of the body so that it can combat chronic or bad inflammation. This approach could be risky and so they are proceeding cautiously.
For instance, a group of researchers in 2011 noted that activating two proteins via inflammation helps to maintain normal blood sugar levels in obese and diabetic mice. Essentially, if we increase the levels of these inflammatory signals, they could actually be therapeutic in diabetes and obesity. Problem is though, inflaming them might worsen other inflammatory diseases like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.
Clearly, while inflammation can be good tissue response , we need to be able to harness, tame, and calm it down when it becomes overactive and bad.
