I took out from the library the Spanish translation of Dracula, because what better thing to do after reading Dracula than reread it in my language. I flipped to today's note, because curious. And then I got to the Holmward line, and I died.

The OG: "[...] which we could all look back on without despair, for Godalming and Seward are both happily married."

The more natural (in Stoker's heterosexual meaning) translation: "...que ahora podemos rememorar sin desesperación, porque tanto Godalming como Seward están felizmente casados." (Empathizes each one, separately, are happily married.)

The absolute Gigachad of a translation I read: "...que ahora podemos rememorar sin desesperación, porque Godalming y Seward se han casado, y son felices." (Literally just. Art and Seward got married and are happy. There is literally no way to read this heterosexually unless you have the world's thickest Straight glasses.)

Anyway I hope translator Francisco Torres Oliver has all the bitches he wants of any gender he likes them.

In this fanfic, the idea is to really be an alternative universe within the canon of the film's plot; to bring Remmick's character, yes, but with interferences about how I see vampires, as well as to play with religious elements (mainly Catholic, which hurt and touch Remmick a lot) as well as the protagonist, a woman of Latin origin in the middle of a Mississippi that is inhospitable to outsiders. I am really putting a lot of effort, love and a little bit of madness from my clever little head to write it. 🦇🩷VAMPYROS LESBOS (1971)🩷🦇

I don’t think I need to translate the title of this one lol. A Spanish-production, German-language film set in Turkey. This one is not inspired by Carmilla, but by Dracula. Countess Nadnie Carody, once a bride of Dracula’s, has survived into the modern world and now preys solely on women. Much like Dracula, she hires a real estate lawyer who she coaxes into staying for longer than necessary at her modern (and by that I do mean wildly groovy) beach-side mansion in Turkey. There are other allusions to Dracula in this one, including a Dr Seward character with a female Renfield-type character under his psychiatric care. I really really love this movie and found it surprisingly substantive for a film that is otherwise your typical erotic horror nonsense. An interesting element in this one is that the actress who plays Countess Nadine is younger than the actress who plays her lawyer, while the vampire character is technically older of course, it’s one of the only vampire movies I know of where the vampire’s primary victim doesn’t appear younger than themself. There’s also a recurring scorpion motif in this movie that I just had to include in my illustration :)

Back in the 1980s, when polenta was the hot new item on restaurant menus, I was eager to try it. I knew it was a traditional Italian dish, but it was foreign to everyone else, including me. I bought a package of cornmeal, began the preparation, and when it was done I realized I had been eating it all my life. It was the same dish Jonathan Harker ate before his encounter with Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel, known in the American South as “cornmeal mush” and “pap” in South Africa. But I knew it as mamaliga, which had been a staple in my grandma’s Romanian kitchen. 

Because mamaliga was such an essential in our lives, I didn’t realize that most of my Jewish friends had never heard of it. The hallways in the buildings we lived in all had the same familiar scents of Ashkenazi staples we all knew — chicken soup, challah, braising briskets, and roasting chickens. Shared values and menus.

Except when it came to mamaliga, which I learned was limited to those of us whose ancestors were from Romania. 

While our family was dining on cornmeal mush, everyone else was eating kasha varnishkes, a dish I ate regularly only after tasting it at my future mother-in-law’s house (it was love at first bite).

It all has to do with geography, I think. Polenta/mamaliga is based on cornmeal, which had been unknown anywhere except the Americas, where corn is indigenous. Christopher Columbus and other Spanish and Portuguese explorers brought corn to western Europe and Africa, where it flourished. Cornmeal became a staple.

Turkish traders noticed corn grain in the markets of Africa and brought some “granoturco” back to Southeast Europe, including the region we now know as Romania, which then belonged to the Ottoman Empire. In 1692, a Romanian nobleman tried some, thought it worthy, and introduced it to Romania. It became the country’s national dish. 

A few years ago I visited “the old country,” including the city of Iasi, where my grandparents were born, and laid stones on the graves of my great-grandparents who are buried in the one remaining Jewish cemetery (when my grandparents lived there, the city was about one-third Jewish). 

Naturally we sampled mamaliga, which is ever-present on every restaurant menu. It’s usually served as a side dish, much like any starch, but in my childhood, my grandma, and later on my mother, served mamaliga in a multitude of ways, including our favorite, mamaliga cu branza si smetana – mamaliga with cheese and sour cream, served for lunch or as a side dish at dairy dinners. 

In my own kitchen, I���ve learned that mamaliga is incredibly versatile. I’ve used it as a substitute for potatoes, noodles, and rice (complete with butter, sauce, or gravy). I’ve served it as a full meal, as a topping for brisket or chicken pot pie filling, with mushroom ragout, and with caramelized onions and cheese. I’ve even mixed it with molasses and cream to make a quick Indian pudding. 

The leftovers are spectacular, too. In fact, in Romanian households they make extra mamaliga to pour into a loaf pan, let it firm up, and then cut slices to fry to crispy goodness. I’ve served fried slices of “Romanian toast” for breakfast, topped them with gravy or cheese for lunch, or with a fried egg for dinner.

It’s no wonder that the Romanians called dried ground corn mamaliga, a word that translates to “food of gold.” It’s a tribute not merely to the grain’s beautiful yellow color, but to its adaptability. Whatever you call it, this dish is an enduring winner and, as far as I am concerned, another treasure of the Ashkenazi kitchen.

This is just me babbling about the reasons for my OCs' names and references that they came from.

Mina Novak

Right off the bat, the first name is a reference to Mina Harker from Dracula. And even with a further tidbit, her hair color was pulled from the version of Mina Harker of "Dracula: Dead and Loving It."

I went with the Germanic origin of Mina, where the name roughly translates to mean "love," and I thought it was fitting for the softest one in the downtown coterie.

As for her surname Novak, reference to Casey Novak from Law & Order SUV. Spawned from the time I only had public access to watch TV and liked how it sounded. Plus, since Felicia already had a family member loosely based on an SUV character(lookwise), I decided to go two for two.

Sticking with another name of Germanic origin, Novak roughly means newcomer. Fitting for the coterie's newest addition and someone who's been freshly embraced.

Mateo Giovanni Trovati

Mateo means "gift of god." I liked how it felt like a cruel in-universe joke. Members of the Giovanni family pushed for an illegitimate child to be called a gift, then promptly rejected him at every turn. The family insisted on the Spanish variation of Mateo rather than the Italian equivalent, which is Matteo.

Giovanni is self-explanatory. Mateo's father is a part of the Giovanni formally but had an affair outside his arranged marriage, and that conceived Mateo. This makes Mateo illegitimate, but technically, he is a part of the family. A workaround for this is that Mateo can't take the Giovanni name formally but can tack it on during certain situations.

Mateo's "actual" surname or the one sloppily slapped onto his birth certificate is Trovati. It's essentially a nickname that originated from a foundling surname, Trovato. This name is Italian in origin and means found, it's one of many names given to children who were orphans, illegitimate, or foundlings. In Mateo's case, a Giovanni elder demanded this name be put in place to fully reinforce Mateo's illegitimate status.

The funny thing about translating Dracula in Spanish is that when I was reading it to my mom, n I got to the part where Jonathan mentions Arthur n John got married off, the rules of grammar resulted in me saying "Arthur and John got married", technically implying they got married off, but! It did sound a lot like they got married to each other, n since this is MY Latin dub, I'm choosing to believe it's canon

Aaand the slurs for the Romani are translated... into another sorta-slur. Why. No, seriously, why. The Spanish word, gitano, is the one most commonly accepted by the community. That's the word most use! This was unnecessary! C'mon!

I must confess that when I was a 12 year old Catholic Mexican kid reading “Dracula” for the first time and I came across the line “Godalming and Seward are both happily married” I was scandalized since I interpret it as “they got married to each other”. It was the thing that impacted me the most from the book, and I couldn't believe that it was mentioned so casually. Eventually I thought: “well, I guess people in England had different mindsets back then”. It took years before it occurred to me that the line meant that they both married some unnamed woman separately.

(To be fair, the Spanish translation just said “se casaron”/“they got married”. And it sort of made sense for me that if they couldn’t have Lucy, at least they had each other?).

French is my second language. (Basic French pet names within.)

When I was ten years old, I was forced to learn French, Italian, and German (mostly French, because we were going to live in France, but just travel to Italy and Germany...at the same time, I picked up some Romanian as well, since I loved vampires/the real Dracula at the time). I retained spoken French and Italian, but my spoken German and Romanian suck, and I'm much better at Spanish (which is my father's first language...I was just never formally taught it, and had to pick it up on my own after we came back from France since it's what my grandmother spoke). I am literate in several other languages, but my strengths are French, Spanish, and Italian (including "Italian" from the Renaissance Era...which is another thing that bugs the crap out of me re: the show, because modern Italian on an espresso machine owner's manual does not equal the Florentine dialect that Machiavelli wrote in, so that was a piece of dialogue hit me weird...probably a Me Problem).

The languages are much different than English, especially French. It's not just about how much Netflix Wednesday hates being compared to her parents. It's about the language itself that's kind of important if you want to insist that your Wednesday use French (or other non-English language) pet names for Enid.

In my other post about this, I made one small error in judgment: AB Sheriff Galpin is a little cultured since he was married to a Frenchwoman, so he would know some French. However, I still don't think Wednesday would pull any French terms of endearment on him, for that very reason...she wouldn't to be compared to Francoise and she wouldn't want to trigger Donovan like that. IF Donovan were to relax his trauma around Francoise, he would definitely be calling Wednesday "ma crevette"...i.e. "my little munchkin" (literally means shrimp 💀...he might just do so in some way yet, I'm thinkin' about it).

But before I get into the French, y'all need to be strongly reminded of just how much Wednesday despises the way her parents relate to each other romantically: She hates it SO MUCH that her hatred for it caused birds to die. Birds that look like they're supposed to be mourning doves.

Though their undersides don't, but I'm going to chalk it up to lazy CGI and lazy detailing, like the extremely, extremely lazy prop masters/set dressers who made the damnably inaccurate articles on Sheriff Galpin's cork board. All the articles and information in them were terribly inaccurate to what we were told on screen.

Regardless, birds DIED. That's how strong her hatred for how they behave romantically is.

But if you must insist on having Wednesday behave like her parents, at least get the language correct.

French is a heavily gendered language. I'm not even going to get into the current war over gender neutral French for the nbs, because that's not what this is about. Wenclair is a lesbian couple, and we are definitely dealing with females 99.9% of the time here w/the ship.

Thus Netflix Wednesday, being proficient in at least Spanish and Italian, would know how to use the next romance language properly, and would know proper pet names for males vs. females. She's cultured like that, and anything less would make her look stupid...and none of us want to make her look stupid.

Now to get to what's been bugging the Hell out of me:

It wouldn't be "mon loup". It would be "ma louloute" (though a literal translation of "my wolf" feminine would be "ma louve", which is kind of cute and looks like "love", but when the French want to get cute, they get cute). "Mon loup" is to refer to a male, so if Wednesday was dating Xavier or Tyler, it'd be "mon loup".

When I was growing up in France, one big pet name was "mon chou" (literally "my cabbage", even though it refers to a chou à la crème, i.e. a cream puff). My mother used to call me "mon petit chou", even though at the time I was still *living within my young AFAB body (corrected for clarity, I'm AFAB of course, this was long before my transition); she wasn't and isn't ever accurate with her French, because the feminine of "mon petit chou" is "ma chouchoute/choupinette". (I could see a Wenclair Wends getting creative and creating her own word, "lupinette" based on this.)

Other gendered* appropriate terms of endearment Wednesday would use if so compelled:

"ma biche"/"ma bichette" (my doe/my little doe) (Enid: WHAT did you call me??? 🤣)

"ma tigresse" (my tigress 🐯)

"ma poule" (my hen) or "ma poulette" (my little chick 🐣)

"ma princesse"

"ma douce" (my sweet) (Enid: DID YOU JUST CALL ME A DOUCHE? 💀)

"ma puce" (this is another I heard often, it literally means "flea", but in French it's affectionate)

"ma petite femme" (my little wife)

"ma reine" (my queen)

Finally, it's not "mon chéri", it's "ma chérie". That's the most basic one there is.

There are a ton of others out there, but these are the classics that I remember, and classic is what I assume all canon Ortega Wednesday is. Traditional, allergic to technology, sticks to old fashioned behavior like Donovan (I mean, did you bother to read that one page of her novel from Episode 7? Her writing vocabulary is off the charts and typical of someone raised/trained classically... that's the real reason her publishers probably rejected her).

*I say gendered appropriate (not "gender appropriate") because I'm talking about the language and there are French terms of endearment that do not have a feminine form, like "mon cœur" and "mon amour". These terms you can use for women/girlfriends that are 'masculine' gendered (yes, I realize there are a lot of animal ones, but that's French for ya):

"mon petit monstre" (my little monster)

"mon petit oiseau" (my little bird...oh hello, Sandor, where'd you come from 💩)

"mon poussin" (my chick 🐣)

"mon chaton" (my kitten 🐾)

"mon trésor" (my treasure)

"mon doudou" (my cuddlebug, basically)

"mon coco" (literally coconut, but it's like saying "my dear")

"mon ange" (my angel)

"mon lutin" (my elf...which might by apropos for Enid 🫠)

This is not at all meant to be an exhaustive list; there are several other pet names and probably new ones since language is constantly evolving. It might help to poke around online and/or join forums dedicated to those who speak your target language.

I realize it can be confusing. Non-English romance languages can be, if you don't know anything about them. As a writer, I'm very appreciative of my experiences in France and Italy*, and I think the newer writers need to think outside of the Anglocentric box when writing for a character like Netflix Wednesday. (I need to take my own advice, because I programmed one of my deleted scenes in English audio without thinking of the non-English speakers who read my fic. That's a whole other issue tho 🧠💥.)

Huh. That wasn't as bloody as I could've made it. I must be getting soft in my old age.

Anyway. We all want Wednesday to sound like someone who knows what she's doing. We should do better with our conversational dialogue than the actual writers. We don't want our Wednesday to be embarrassed or embarrassing, again...

*And all the other countries I visited as a kid and adult...I know she's there right now, but I was in Buda in 2014 and while it's one of my favorite cities, Hungarian is the worst language ever 😭 EVER.

I've been checking out Dreaming Spanish's roadmap levels, and doubling the hours since I'm learning chinese...

And I'm very torn on where I actually land on the roadmap levels. I can follow live action shows made for native speakers, at least with chinese subtitles. I have been able to get the "main idea" of most shows since the end of year 1 when Word of Honor came out. What's improved since then is I just grasp more details now, depending on the show. If I use NO chinese subtitles, I seem to understand about 50% of the actual words said and 80% or more of what's going on in general (so from visual context I can still follow the main idea).

DS roadmap mentions only being able to follow easier TV shows and cartoons at Level 5 (600 hours for regular roadmap) and up to level 6 (1000 hours for regular roadmap) for some more complicated adult shows to start to somewhat be understandable. For a doubled roadmap that would be 1200-2000 hours!

I've got at MOST 547 hours of listening or listening-reading to chinese before this listening experiment, or 665 hours total. That would match up with the levels of the ORIGINAL dreaming spanish roadmap. But I am way under the levels recommended for doubling the roadmap for learning chinese as an english speaker.

If I counted my reading only time, sure, yeah, I might have close to 1200 hours of time I spent doing Something I understood in chinese, especially if we count all the reading-only I did while Looking up word translations (which was not comprehensible input in that I couldnt understand by reading extensively, but was Comprehensible with the help of a translation aid - which DS wouldn't count). So maybe that explains why I'm so much above where I would've expected to be?

I guess this is all a reflection to say: maybe if you read a TON, that will give you some boost to your expected comprehension level when you do start listening. Because I expected to be able to understand Peppa Pig (recommended to be understandable at around ~200-400 of the regular roadmap, so even longer expected for chinese). I was expecting to understand some cartoons - not as many as I can, I have been happily surprised my ears adapted to cartoons for 5-10 year olds pretty fast only a couple dozen hours. I was not expecting my comprehension when listening-only to adult dramas, to feel like the end of year 1 with reading-chinese subs of adult dramas. It feels hard, yeah, but doable for main idea. I guess all the times I watched cdramas with chinese subtitles, I was getting a Little listening practice even though I didn't focus on listening.

Another interesting note to self: someone on r/dreaminglanguages went from Assimil french lessons, to just watching french shows, and felt after 250 hours they felt they were making some improvement, then at 600 hours like they could watch adult shows fairly comfortably (of course they were comfortable with the ambiguity and speed from lots of practice with them - which is partly what makes them exhausting to follow at first). I have a lot of reading background in French, they suggested I could just listen more, I probably need to just focus on improving my listening.

I tried to listen to Dracula audio book in French, ended up finding a guy doing a chapter analysis instead, found him fine to understand. Note that I hardly EVER practice listening to french. Note that last year I tried to listen to HP audiobook in French and could barely parse any words, it was easier to understand the Spanish audiobook (a language I barely studied and certainly not for many years like French). So any improvement in listening since last year was kind of surprising. I listened to a handful of InnerFrench episodes fall 2024 just trying out comprehensible input ideas, but that could've only been like 5 hours tops.

Maybe listening just improves MUCH faster if you already have a reading background? I'm going to mull that over.
