Trick or treat!!
I know that you really did like Law becoming my 7yo OC's Cora-san dad vaor, so here's an excerpt from the next installment in the series. 208 words, retreads stuff from the prior two fics because it also deviates from the main story before they have this talk.
“Listen, I know I’m…” Fuck, this was awkward. “I know I’m not your real dad, but while we’re doing this, we should probably at least pretend like I am so no nosy aunties try anything.” “Law-san… you are my real dad,” Nauja replied. There was an uncomfortable silence between them, the only sounds being the waves against the sides of the ship. “My first dad… he wasn’t like you. He wasn’t mean, but…” She avoided eye contact, instead seeming very interested in what was going on behind Professor Nanuk’s ear. “What did you call your dad? In Flevench?” “Vaor, Vader, Papa…” “My dad wasn’t mean, but he also didn’t really like me,” Nauja said, her head bobbing in a nod. “My vaor loves me, because he teaches me, and tells me I’m good and smart, and does things to protect me that my dad would have never done. You gave up the crew for me… and I don’t know why, other than that you’re my vaor… and he would have never done that.” “Come here,” he requested, holding open his arms. The little girl stepped forward and allowed herself to be enveloped in his grasp, both glad that the hug was so warm against the cool night air.
Want a little fic snippet, WIP, behind-the-scenes info, or otherwise, hit up my ask (multiple callers accepted and encouraged)!

Can you please give me some happy/cute hcs for Sea Three?
Tumblr media
They're a universal constant and find each other in every universe.
The three of them will always be together in every universe, regardless of whether it's romantic or platonic.
Uma, Harry, and Gil are a package deal. If you date one of them or are friends with one of them, you have to at least tolerate the other two.
The trio has at least one meal together every week. Even after the barrier is brought down.
They share everything. Including Uma's aunt Uliana ( I think I got this idea from @isleofdarkness but if I'm wrong correct me).
After the Shrimp Incident, Harry and Gil did everything they could think of to get the shrimp bits and smell of shrimp out of her hair. This may not sound cute but I remind you, the three of them were very smol and the two of them were using the crew's collective brain to find a solution.
In a world where they aren't dating, they are each other's wingman/wing woman (aka they will do everything in their power to help the other get a decent date).
They will hype each other up (or talk each other down from doing something reckless) if needed.
Gil and Harry helped Uma decorate her room on the Lost Revenge.
Harry and Uma have nicknamed Gil 'Sunshine' and they call his little sister, Gemma, 'Mini Sunshine'.
They get each other birthday gifts (I think this one is semi-canon).
Gil has a cat named Patchy that he rescued from his dad's hellion of a dog; it lives on the Lost Revenge. Uma and Harry didn't want it at first but he grew on them and the crew.
One time, while Harry was watching the cat it got out and he had to ask the Badun Detective Agency to find it, even though his sworn enemy works for it (Aka Harry Badun who is only considered an enemy because he refuses to use a different nickname). The cat was just chilling in a tree and Gil was never the wiser.
Speaking of pets, Harry has an old ass parrot he got from Evie's sixth birthday party that he named 'Mercuito' because he was the best part of the play Romeo and Juliet.
(They're all theatre kids).
Uma also has pets. Several in fact. Because as soon as the barrier was brought down, Uliana and the boys (and the rest of the crew) managed to get Greta and Cornelius the sea phonies from the sea phony club after their owner hightailed it to who knows where. Uma was so happy she nearly cried.
There's also her/the crew's sharks: Bartholomew, Fang, Bully, Crusher, and Meathead. They are the sharks the shark swim team swim with it.
Harry and Gil helped Uma name the sharks as kids.
They make stink bombs together.
Gil, Uma, and Harry all fixed up the ship together after Harry and Uma won it.
Harry got kicked out of Dragonball so he could attend Serprent Prep with Uma. He took Gil with him but Gaston hasn't noticed Gil hasn't been in any of his gym classes since.
Uma saved Gil from drowning once (in canon) and taught him how to swim along with Harry, and the rest of the crew.
Harry taught Uma and Gil how to draw.
Sometimes, if they're in extreme danger and need to get out quick Gil will pick Uma and Harry up and book it.
Harry invented the scammers and pick pockets club, and joined the croc wrestling club to fill his time when Uma is at work or at one of her clubs (Sea phonies club and shark swim team. She is the captain of the Shark Swim Team.) and when Gil is at his (Rat Trapping and Competitive Lifting).
They shit talk bad exes and ex friends together.
In the case they're not romantically involved and one of them has kids, the other two become the god parents.

I find that a bit interesting because, IIRC, the guys at Team Four Star don't really want people to "prefer" DBZA over the original because, at the end of the day, it's just a parody. Maybe I'm biased because I am a Latino who grew up with Dragon Ball (and we Latinos take Dragon Ball REALLY seriously lol), but I totally understand that sentiment, especially when I see people saying that DBZA is "superior" to the original show.
And of course they can say that! And I get the attitude and why they encourage people to watch the original. But I didn't grow up with it like they did - I don't have the same feelings Dragonball inspires in them and how important it was and honestly watching clips from the actual show just does nothing for me. The DBZA crew have a great sense of comedic timing, editing, writing, and just in general talent for creation that extends into their other projects and it gels with me. I like TotallyNotMark describing stuff that happens in the bits that DBZA never covered like GT, Super, and the Buu saga, but I just don't see myself ever sitting down to watch it. I'm sure that's the case for a lot of people when it comes to certain shows and movies - they like hearing them being TALKED about, but the investment to watch them is just not going to be there. It's often like that with Night Mind, too - there are a ton of Unfiction projects that are phenomenal... but I don't know if I have the patience to watch them (especially huge, years-spanning ones like old Slenderverse stuff) since a lot of the investment requires paying very close attention to the material and these days with how I work I don't have the free time to watch a lot of stuff purely for my own enjoyment (I'm mostly watching stuff while editing or eating).

It’s Monday, so it’s time for Casual Trek! This week we’re looking at some episodes of Star Trek which the BBC saw fit to ban back in the day.
Miri has a strangely Earth-like world overrun by feral children and adults dying of some mysterious Space Mange. A bunch of the cast and crew enlist their children to help play these droogs in training and there’s a disturbing “she looks 14 but is actually 300” thing which I normally only expect to encounter in Fire Emblem games.
Then we get some incredible nonsense in Plato’s Stepchildren, where godlike beings get Kirk and Spock (and later Uhura and Chapel) to dance about like idiots, play horsey, kiss and possibly kill each other in some bizarre improv exercises. How troubling is all of this going to be?
We also talk about Alien Romulus, how Miles misses stupid drunk British lads breaking things, Dr Who (of course), inferred child death and my poor attempts to resist making a Dragonball Z reference.
You can find this episode and more on Spotify, on all good podcatchers and here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4yC1VH1md9cs76HOoJs0nf?si=Ui-GxQHWRDeWftKfsCLdWw
If you like us, please go to whatever podcatcher you use and rate us five stars. If you really love our work and want us to do any episode in particular, find us on Ko-Fi and send us some gold-pressed latinum.

Reasons why I think Dragonball Z is actually super progressive for its time - part 1
Piccolo is such an amazing character, and for a show that historically has had gnarly issues the way they have decided to depict black characters, Piccolo kinda vibes with black-coded imagery, you know? Like, his green skin and facial features sorta line up, and his clothes are super culture specific. Plus, his whole backstory of being an outsider who eventually becomes a key ally to the main crew? That's straight out of a redemption arc you'd see in black narratives.
Plus he's such a good role model as a surrogate parent. Who else goes from wanting to take over the world to baby sitting his surrogate granddaughter? He really feels like a safe person to be around.
Piccolo embodies what a non toxic foster parent should look like. He loves Gohan, and wants him to be better for himself, but never tries to pretend to be his actual father. He isn't arrogant like Vegeta, but is self assured of his own power.
Toriyama really did well with Piccolo.

I finally got the time to sit and watch Nocturne. And I'm trying my best to stay normal about the black characters. As someone who really values her natural carribean hair I'm so in love with how they respect the hair or black people. Maybe other series have done better but I'm not a huge consumer of animation. But I'm glad that for once in a fantasy setting the people looked like they are meant to and not just color swapped and that the hair wasn't just silk press. Again trying to stay very normal about Drolta. But I think I finally understood and experienced what my childhood peers felt when watching Dragonball, I just needed a different package. Anyways thanks for blogging about it, that's how I discovered it. ❤️

When she first appeared I got so excited!
Like she’s not first woc vampire we see in castlavnia show ( hopefully not the last either)
But bro fact every scene she was in she had new outfit, different hairstyle is so 💕💕💕
You can tell the crew had so much fun and love designing her. ( all characters in nocturne tbh) but Drolta man she had fans and crew on their knees for her 🥴
Pity she got killed off but what a powerhouse she was. I hope crew just keeps going with banger character designs. Like don’t just peak at her

something a bit more personal so heads up
some tomm (me) lore: i've been a big fan of dragon ball since 2019, was actually a dragonball fanartist for two years straight (was my previous heavy fixation until i caved into mario). i'm also a big fan of matpat / gametheory since ofc 2014 due to fnaf and got back to frequently watching him around 2021.
both HUGE impacts that idk where i would be without them ever interfering my already heck of an enigma life. worse part is the fact i have to say goodbye to them both JUST a day apart. yes mat isn't deceased but the thought of not seeing him as much anymore after JUST getting to watch him again is straight-up heartbreaking. i would still watch and am already fond of the existing crew and 100% approve his retirement reasons. yet it all has been tearing me apart personally. it hurts. a lot. its sad. very sad. but in the end: i'm happy. i'm happy for the memories, experiences, and growth i received with them that i was able to receive in my life. both young and now as an adult.
watching. playing, drawing, and talking about how goku and his friends will get through the next challenge. it's made me love friendship adventure stories so much more, anxiously waiting for the next episode of super every saturday night on toonami. impacting me to become more optimistic and not to be afraid to draw what i really love (fanart). matpat encouraged me to think inside AND outside the box, to question reality and fiction, open to criticism and theorizing in a more bigger picture. wether serious, comedically, or satire, it wasn't just learning about the world or inner depictions of video games, food, or how to style ourselves; but for fun and loving those around you. appreciating the moment and learning at the same time. someone i could genuinely relate to and open my heart back up to older franchises such as mario, learning the film industry as i always wanted to, learn to appreciate food and get out of my comfort zone, and ofc be more knowledgeable of what i wear and how it can impact me. i could seriously just keeping going on and on.
idk how to end this other than by saying thank you. thank you toriyama. thank you matpat. never was it in my bingo card of 2024, but nothing is going to stop me from continuing to love and appreciate the things these two amazing individuals brought into the world, impacting so many lives. 💚❤️💛💙 + 🐉💥

we've both been stuck in DragonBall brainrot for months now and I've been so tempted to bait you into some comic RPs like we've done before for other fandoms, but seeing as your fave is Vegeta and mine is 18 and they both FUCKING HATE EACH OTHER I'm not sure how well that would work out xD
aaaAA our comic rps were so fun and gooood!!
Idk how Geets is toward her in the anime but in the manga/Toriyama movies he doesn’t really interact with her much, and doesn’t seem to have a strong opinion about … anyone in the group jdjsjs I know he’s super confrontational in the anime, but in the manga he behaves like he really doesn’t have any room to be a hater toward anyone but Freeza, who is Demonstrably Worse than he is jfjdj
I’ve never personally HC’d that he hates 18 outside of the 15 minutes of shame getting (deservedly) dog walked by her, but he’s not really in any position to judge how anybody else behaved in that era of his life, having been The Worst, which he does (at least in the manga) seem to regret by the end of that arc (if not by the end of his fight with Perfect Cell fjdj).
I can absolutely see why she might hate him though, or at least harbor resentment, considering his initial insults and then being the reason Cell Did That.
Granted, I don’t think Vegeta assumes anyone in the crew particularly likes him anyway, outside of his own family and Goku’s (Piccolo included), and I guess I always assumed 18 didn’t have enough Give-A-Damn in her body to think about Vegeta, haha. BUT I did always assume Vegeta had sort of a grudging respect for her by the end of it all, since Saiyans are all about carrying your own strength (and are 🤟 about strong women). Maybe some conflicting feelings about how that strength was achieved if you were to grill him about it, but he doesn’t seem uncomfortable with her at all in the manga after the Cell saga.
18 and Bulma seem to get along well, though, so I always imagined 18 and Vegeta had a ‘nod at each other when they pass in the hallway’, ‘former villains reshaped by the doki dokis 🤝 let’s never bond over this’ kind of relationship, haha. In that sense she’s probably his favorite, next to Piccolo, among the Z-Fighters just because he knows they’re never gonna try to have a Get to Know You conversation with him .
I am very /chinhands to hear your thoughts though 👀

Little Mouse - Turles x Fem!Reader
Paring: Turles x Fem!Reader
Anime: DragonBall Z
Rated M
Warnings: Mention of death, mention of possible emotional trauma, genocide, Fluff, Slight Angst
-------------------------------------
You sat in a closet, your breathing silent yet heavy as you silently panted, you were in a slight mess. Light dust layered your clothes, your clothes slightly roughed on you, your blood rushed in your ears, your eyes wide and blown in excitement and fear as you stared at the closed door before you. Your eyes trained on the bottom of the door, the light shining from under being undisturbed as not one shadow has passed by yet. You sat in the middle of the cramped room, your legs bent to fit you accordingly in the small face. You've been on this... ship, for days now. Sitting in a bedroom fit for a king. You weren't allowed to leave the room for nothing. They'd bring you food, and water, there was no need to leave. There were plenty of clothes for you to change into, products and tools for your face, makeup for you to play with, and hygienic products for you to clean yourself and to help with your feminine needs.
There was even a TV, books, paper and pen... There was even a sexy man who came by every night and sometimes in the evening. You were in no need to leave the room, not when everything was already there. You've been on this ship for days, you weren't just sure how long though. There was no clock, no form of time anywhere, and it seemed that it was night all the time out the window. The only reason why you knew it was a ship was because you remembered seeing it on the news... back on your planet... before they came and destroyed it... with a giant fucking tree... It was so crazy, it was like you were trapped in a sci-fi film or something, it was ridiculous, but nonetheless very real. They came and they conquered, within just a few hours, your planet was destroyed, everyone was dead and it was just you left.
He landed before you, like some kind of angle, a fallen one at that. His grey-blue and black armor, his white cape, his scattered hairstyle, his tan skin, his rugged good looks, his muscles... He was a giant, at least 6'0" even. He was massive in weight, height, width, muscles... nothing on him was small. He screamed evil, elegance, control, power... he was like a king or something. He teased you, called you a 'dirty rat', and to be honest, you were filthy. Your hair was a mess, dirt laces in your hair, your skin was dirty, your clothes tattered your shoes missing. You looked like nobody loved you... But they did, and in that moment you began to realize, just how much you took your family for granted. They weren't the easiest to live with, they were hard to talk to, selfish, always took but never gave, and constantly crushed your trust... but for the first time, you lost your irritating family, and you began to realize that they were the only ones who you really had in this world.
But now they're gone... you watched as their bodies practically decayed like a corpse before you in just hours. Why you were unaffected... you never knew, and you still don't. But he liked you, he seen something in you that nobody had ever seen before... He smiled at you with that crooked smirk, he seemed curious of you in a way, his eyes gleamed curiously. A man has never looked at you like that, it was different, it was new... It was exciting even. It was strange yet you liked it... He called himself 'Turles, the leader of the Crusher Core', a space pirate... It would've been laughable but given the situation... You believed him... That's probably why you took his hand when he offered it to you, wanting you to join his crew... To be his 'queen.' And honestly, with nothing left to lose, you took his hand, there was nothing on this planet left for you, it was a wasteland, and the only thing left was his ship and that giant fucking tree... You watched as your planet grew smaller and smaller, held tightly to his chest as you looked over your shoulder out the window.
A shadow passed by and you snapped back to reality, you looked down and sucked in a shuttering breath as you scooted back more in the small room. You were scared yet excited. Scared because you left the room and he clearly told you not to leave, no matter what... and that if you did he'd punish you... However, you were also excited, because of what he may do. It was riveting in a way. You listened to his heavy footsteps against the metal floor, the ground vibrating beneath you as he walked passed your door slowly. "Now, now, now... Little Mouse, why don't you come out, we've played long enough, and I'll need you to come out now... It's nearly lunch time and I've made plans to take you out to eat." He spoke, his accent sounding out as he walked by.
By the sound of his accent, you'd swear that he was of some sort of decedent or was from the eastern side of the galaxy, it was like a form of 'Proper English' or something. It was sexy honestly. You perked up at his words. 'Take me out? He has plans to eat out, and he's thinking of taking you with him?' You thought, your heart skipping a beat. It made you happy to know that he wanted to be seen with you in public... For a while now... You were sure that he was either just keeping you as an easy lay or he was simply just embarrassed to be seen with you... And it honestly was beginning to make you feel less about yourself, but now... "I've made dinner reservations for us to eat, it's a beautiful restaurant and I think you'll enjoy it just as much as I do." He spoke once more. You listened to him walk around the area, you could hear him moving things around, looking in every nook and cranny for you.
You sat up straighter, your clothes making the lightest shuffling sounds, but it was enough to make him stop moving. You held your breath, you honestly forgot how sensitive his hearing was. "Ah... So the idea of eating out has gotten you excited, has it now, little mouse?" He asked, you could hear the smirk in his voice. You wanted to chuckle at that and you almost did, but you wanted to come out on your own... You've honestly gotten used to looking a certain type of way in front of him now. You were usually so clean, smelled good, your hair always combed, clothes elegant. It's been days... but the longer you sit here, you're beginning to realize, that it's probably been longer than a few days, months even... It should've scared you... but you couldn't care, this has honestly been your best life, living like a queen, being treated like a queen... It was addicting and you didn't want to lose that status.
"Little Mouse... Come on out now, we must make it to our reservations on time, and I do wish for you to look your most gorgeous... I want every man's neck to practically break at the sight of you... The jealousy in their eyes when they see that you're on my arm and not theirs." He said, the cockiness in his voice was evident and it made your eyes gloss over as your own imagination ran wild. 'To be marveled at... Like a queen.' You thought, with the new revelation, the new idea, you stood up, dusted your clothes off and you made yourself look presentable. You opened the door, and there he stood. Tall, handsome, strong, mysterious... He looked proud and just as cocky as usual, and you honestly loved it. "There you are love, I was hoping that you'd come to me and not the other way around, because I can promise you... That if I discovered it, I wouldn't be so nice." He said. His smile did not reach his black eyes, he had never actually hurt you before, but you didn't want to test it.
You walked towards him, a proud smile on your face as you laced your arms around his. "I'm more than aware, but the promise of eating out was enough to make me come to you, especially since I now know you aren't embarrassed by me." You spoke. He scoffed as he walked, you kept pace with him. "No why would I feel such a thing? I wouldn't have made you my queen if I had felt such a way." He said confidently as he walked down the hall. You nodded your head. "That's true." You said agreeing with what he said as you both walked down the hall, curving with the walls as you both vanished down the winding hall. In the closet, you were in before, sat a box deep in the corner under a pile of junks. In the box laid an old nearly decayed plastic frame, the glass cracked. In the frame was an old picture of a family. A woman, a man, a young woman a young man, and two small boys. The younger woman was you, your smile big as you stood with your family.
On the other side of the box, the numbers written out read 4-16-2022. On a calendar in your and Turles's bedroom, the date read 8-18-2032.

HELLO FELLOW ZONAMI OK SO disclaimer: im still in Drum Island arc of the anime but i know bits and pieces of the later story of OP
but even so!!! zoro and nami just give me Vibes i can't quite ignore???
the bickering to disguise how much they care for each other,,,zoro trusting nami to save him from drowning even after she 'betrayed them',,, being the only one to notice her get bitten by a bug on elbaf island that gave her a fever,,,
honestly i think ive mentioned it before that they cut out a lot of moments between them in animated specials so i wouldn't be surprised if they cut out the moments i mentioned before out of the LA but then!!! the LA gives us little tidbits of different interactions between the two that gives makes my zonami heart flutter 🥹
what do u think of the LA trailer moments so far?
Hi fellow Zonami, thanks for talking to me. I had given short answer but let me deliberate it more in this column.
I think ZoroxNami is a classic couple troupe that pretty popular when Eichiro Oda started One Piece series (1997)
It's around the same time Naruto started and Harry Potter published (Not shounen but It'll be relevant later).
Speaking about big three, we shouldn't left out one of their biggest shounen influence : Dragonball.
Especially if you look at MC's love interest, you'll notice similarities.
Chichi, Hinata, Hancock.
All three are black haired bombshell that obsessed with the MC who's kinda oblivious toward their feeling.
So, whats that get to do with our ship? Well for DBZ and Naruto, it's a fact that male and female Deuteragonist ended up together. (Bulma-Vegeta : Sakura-Sasuke)
Then Nami and Zoro gonna end up together too?
Unfortunately I don't think Oda will follow that far.
He stated early he won't make Nami fall for any of the crew. I'll hold on to that words.
However it's clear as a day that Zoro and Nami is such a good potential and Oda often throws nods to that cliche such as :
Matching color scheme (green & orange are complimentary color often used together)
Zoro's mom being from thief family
Nami santoryuu art.
And let's talk about that Arlong park pool scene.
it's the only one instance when Zoro put his life on the line-devoid of his power-for people other than luffy.
This scene emphasis that he get nami behind her thieving scheming mask. And I don't think any of the crew ever done that to her. It's a big thing that strangely missed out among fandom sphere.
Anyway, It made me think maybe at some point Oda consider the possibility for the cliche couple to happen but scrapped it afterwards? We will never know.
AND if we talk about LA, Hollywood isn't strange to the male-female Deuteragonist ended together either (Harry Potter, that's why I mentioned it before).
The bickering habit of two of them fit the Hollywood picture.
I won't be surprised if the director see something there, propose to give tiny nod to the troupe. Which Oda approve.
Plus the cast (Emily Rudd & Mackenyu) are too hot not to have some spark on screen!
I believe LA viewers would experience one piece differently than manga reader or anime watcher.
Within short duration they should convince us the straw hat getting close as a team. New scene bound to happen and I can't wait for them!

Worldbuilding: A Matter of Timing
One problem we have with handling history in our heads is how it’s taught. I grant you, there is so much history out there, we have to find ways to divide it up or we couldn’t learn any of it.
The problem is, most people don’t teach you anything about how to put it back together.
Too often history is only taught as “this sequence of events happened, and these people ruled, in this particular region”. We almost never get a book, or a course, that takes the time to pull back and say, “while X was happening over here, Y was happening in this completely different place. And here are some reasons they may be connected....”
I write, so here’s a literary example. The Chinese writer Wu Cheng’en wrote (and/or compiled from various preexisting tales) and published the Journey to the West in 1592, in the late Ming Dynasty.
If you’re an anime or manga fan, you may be more familiar with that as the basis for Dragonball Z or Saiyuki. I have a particular fondness for Saiyuki, with a cranky, gun-toting Sanzo and all that insane crew. I like to think if Wu Cheng’en had the chance to take in that modern version, he’d crack a smile.
The same year, 1592, is when Shakespeare’s Richard III was first performed on stage. No, not at the Globe Theater, it’d be built seven years later. Like Journey to the West, it was based on preexisting stories; histories, other plays, and who knows what else. Also like that story, it’s been adapted into other versions... even manga, as of Requiem of the Rose King.
Also in 1592: The plague hit Malta. John Davis discovered the Falklands. Galileo invented the thermometer. And the Japanese invaded Korea, leading to a massive game of whack-a-mole as the Japanese won on land (most of the time) and the Korean navy laid various smackdowns on the sea (most of the time). It got ugly.
All of this was happening at once.
In the case of the two stories, there’s actually a reason they both were created about then. In both Ming China and England at the time, there was an explosion in printing, and an eager literate or semi-literate audience for entertainment. Also the harvests hadn’t exactly been the best (this was the Little Ice Age, if not as bad as it’d get later), there were wars going on nearby or on people’s doorsteps, and people really, really wanted distractions.
Those two stories are definitely distracting.
Think about this when you’re building your world’s history. Things are going to happen all over the place. If they’re far enough apart in time and space, they may not be related-
But maybe, even half a world apart, they are. Think about it!

The Remnants are just DragonBall Z movie villains before they fight the main villain.
We got the pretty one that's always in charge of the crew: Kadaj
We got the big, tough, stupid one: Loz
And we got the one with the weird power (I guess his weird power is gun??): Yazoo

Best Frenemy of 2023: Izzy (Our Flag Means Death)
Tumblr media
“Sometimes a bad guy is a friend that we haven’t made yet.” - Older Scott Pilgrim from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
And there are a few greats who fall under this. Vegeta. Piccolo. Android 17 and Android 18. Majin Buu. Are they all Dragonball characters? Yes but they fit this to the tee.
And the same for Izzy from Our Flag Means Death. Except for the Dragonball part.
We spent all last season seeing Izzy as the guy who hated Stede and his band of pirates. So much so that I hated him. Still, with this season we started to see his softer side. Did it start off soft? Was he nice? Friendly? No. Not at all. Sure didn’t help that he was going through depression and craziness but eventually he was willing to be on the ship without wanting to push anybody off the ship. Still, Izzy was there to help everybody and be the rock once things worked out for him.
And to be honest. That is some really good improvement from Izzy seeing where he started in Season 1.
Tumblr media
I think the part that made me realize that Izzy was the Best Frenemy was when he was willing to teach Stede how to fight. Izzy didn’t like Stede and saw him as a rival of love or companion to Blackbeard. Still, Izzy was willing to teach Stede and it sort of worked. After all, Izzy gave Stede the glowing words of “I never met anybody without a total lack of skills. How you are still alive, I can’t say.” and “I met greater men than you…Better Fighters. Better Shooters. Well…Just better. But they are all killed. And yet here you stand.”
That sounds like a glowing praise of approval to me. He spent the whole season getting out of a hole and never really got close to the crew in any way that you can see out right. Still, he stayed aboard through it all and got out of the hole. And when the chips were down and he was needed, Izzy came forth and went beyond to be that good person for everybody on the crew. While still being a grouch to everybody. Even in death.

Honorable Mentions: Gideon Graves from Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - He was the second person I thought of when I was thinking about that. In the anime he started off bad but kind of mellowed out to just not care too much about Scott and be a friend to others but still was bad.

Dragon Ball Z: Abridged Episode 28 Review

Where voice-work replaces character-work.

I don’t believe that it will be a particularly controversial opinion to say that Dragonball Z’s greatest strength is in its wide cast of interesting characters. This is something that based on the small amount of Kai I’ve seen I believe is true for both the Abridged series and the original, and with the caveat that I’ve only seen a small amount of Kai in mind, I feel safe saying that Goku is one of the least interesting characters of that cast.1
In the Abridged series, Team Four Star does a good job of playing against that weakness by giving him a lot of interaction with more interesting characters2 and by playing up Goku’s stupidity to an absurd level, but he still remains fairly uninteresting on his own (if you want proof, he’s barely been around on Namek and the story has been just as compelling without him).
“Leave it to Freezer” then, while not being a bad episode of this show, is one of its weaker episodes, since it almost entirely focuses on the fight between Freeza and Goku, who simply don’t mesh in as interesting a way as both of them do with the rest of the cast.
I suspect this is the result of both Freeza and Goku having the least specific characterizations on this show (I feel like I know more about Guldo than either of them), and so when they’re thrown against each other for the full episode, there’s not enough character for either of them to effectively bounce off of. The most specific characterization we’ve gotten for Goku have to do with his relationship to Gohan, and with Freeza, everything interesting about him had to do with his crew, brother, and father. In both cases, none of those aspects of their character has anything to do with their relationship to the other.
Thankfully, when you’ve got as good a cast as Team Four Star does, you can sell the episode on the strength of the actors alone, which is what makes this episode solid overall. LittleKuriboh and MasakoX are both delightful as their characters, and their chemistry is perfect: Goku brings out Freeza’s superiority complex in all of its glory, and Freeza brings out a seriousness that we don’t see often in Goku. It also helps that the jokes in this episode are pretty great, and Team Four Star’s knack for bringing out the comedy in violence shines through here.
Rating: 4/5

Stray Observations
1He’s definitely not the least interesting in the original show. That award would probably go to Bulma (and that’s just because Toriyama doesn’t know how to write women).
2Goku and King Kai’s relationship is particularly excellent, and I give full credit there to MasakoX and KaiserNeko’s excellent chemistry
Vegeta: “You are the last… remaining… Saiyan. Oh god, you’re the last remaining Saiyan.”
Goku: “Wow, Gohan sounds like he’s really had a hard time. Piccolo should have a talk with him.”
Freeza: “I’m going to drown you like a sack of dumb puppies.” Goku: “Why would you drown puppies?!” Freeza: “Because they’re cute and cuddly.” Goku: “Are… you coming on to me?”
Krillin Owned: 27, delivered by Freeza puke.
