#poorly drawn mdzs #mdzs #lan xichen #jin guangyao #jiang cheng #wei wuxian #qin su #EDIT: Tumblr published an earlier draft with only half the notes I wrote so: late entry on my JGY thoughts.#Unlike the mystic powers of the stockmarket (what the OG meme is referring to) I think this situation calls for more active investigation.#qin su is such a deeply tragic character to me and I really wish we got a bit more from her.#Love everyone who sent me messages about her after the last time she appeared.#I think she needs a spin off of her being a transmigrator SO badly.#MDZS has so many interesting characters - but it sometimes fails to give them the proper room to really develop past a role in the plot.#That's just the consequence of writing a story like MDZS. Not every character in a book *needs* to have a rich inner life and backstory!#To do so would bog down the story and obliterate any notion of pacing. It's just not possible.#Jin Guangyao (nee Meng Yao) is unfortunately not free from this leeway rule. He is the culprit of this murder mystery plot #and thus NEEDS to encapsulate the themes of the book. And personally he's a 7 out of 10 at best on this front (in the AD).#MDZS is about rumours twisting reality and working towards truth. And about how people & situations are rarely ever black & white #JGY has his motivations. He's well written in regards to his actions making sense for his character.#What started as good traits (drive to succeed & improve his image) became twisted over time (do anything to maintain his image)#and it's a good parallel to WWX! He has the same arc (with different traits)! Bonus points for IGY in that regard.#but man....by the time we confront this guy for murder there's not a lot of grey morality. He's just...deep in the hole *he* dug.#There's a beautiful tragedy to it! More on JGY in later comics - this is getting pretty long already!

I liked most of this season but the fact that they have the GALL to present Five “falling in love” in an isolated, vulnerable situation- in the EXACT SAME WAY he coped in the first apocalypse (Ahem, Delores) and we’re supposed to accept that that’s his true feelings??? That he’s not just regressing into older coping mechanisms???

His actions would have been largely the same even if they had just been platonic love(only without the semi-cheating 🫶 and destruction of his relationship with his brother) but at the VERY LEAST they should’ve had him confront how he treats romance as a crutch??? They should’ve shown him realising that what he wants is a loving environment- WHICH HIS FAMILY CAN PROVIDE

(I’m really glad he’s pseudo confirmed as Bi tho. Wouldve semi-enjoyed any relationship with a guy or girl if it wasn’t HIS BROTHERS WIFE)

#w/e i just think it’s a weird take #i remember when people were saying how nice it was for a female character to have her own human dignity as the driving motivator #for her actions/character arc in season 1 #now in season 2 she is more a love interest than a main character……#with people saying she wouldn’t have been as rebellious in season 1 if she had less privilege in the outside world #(despite helena also clearly being a pawn for lumon….. much like cobel caught between authority and powerlessness)#(abusing her power while still subject to the power of others. not having a right to refuse certain roles in the company)#IDK i just think it undermines how anyone would want to escape endless labor that they didn’t sign up for????#not just because helly is harboring secret entitlement to not have to work because she’s a spoiled brat #boring!! anyway #severance

No one asked but “I’m scared” is such an underrated motivation for a character to do shitty things to others.

Sometimes it’s just that simple, but there’s always some deeper meaning as to why that character is scared— like the Bad Guy heavily traumatized Protagonist and now Protagonist is deathly afraid of getting on Bad Guy’s bad side again. It’s so underrated that a character is scared solely because the situation and personal consequences scare them more than the determent of others.

Maybe I’m not looking at that kinda of media that much, but sometimes I kinda just want a character to do shitty things to others because they’re scared. Like pressing the Big Red Button is gonna launch a nuke at the building they’re currently in with the Bad Guy, but if they chose not to then the whole rest of the city gets leveled by the Bad Guy’s evil death laser of doom— and then they chose not to press the button because they’re just frankly scared of dying. They entered this fight hoping to walk away, and now between the choice to save themselves or save others they indirectly kill everyone they knew because they were just to scared to pull the trigger on themselves.

So yeah maybe make characters be cowards a little more often?

#and I don’t mean the ‘uwu I’m so scared of everything but especially other people’ type of coward usually found in anime esque games #I solely mean cowards #people severely underprepared for the situations they’ve found themselves in #and now are to scared to act in the preservation of others for fear that the consequences for that are to hefty a price #and I also see why being scared is such an underrated motivation #the worst thing a character can do is be annoying because that makes the reader not want to read anymore #and being scared is really fucking annoying sometimes #so I get that if a character starts out a coward then they’ll probably develop past that #they’ll become self sacrificing or greedy with fear as the main drive as for why #but like it would be so tragic if at the end of the story a character underwent all that development #only to still be the same coward the auidence started with #that would be so tragically awesome if done well
