Made another trip back to Bay City Michigan to check on the feathered friends that hang out by the river. It’s the middle of December and I wondered how many ducks would still be here.
Tumblr media
As you can see, there are still quite a few hanging around. The grey skies are still hanging around too, but I kind of expected that.
Tumblr media
This is still looking east towards the downtown area like in the first shot. The river here is at the top of the picture behind that foot bridge and the ducks and geese are swimming in a short canal that runs west a few hundred feet off from the river. I had to approach the group very slowly to get this picture so they would not get all nervous and scatter. Happy Saturday 😃

Geese with Swords
I’m entering this in an art contest. Gonna add color, just thought it would be funny to post. :)
Tumblr media
Backstory:
So in our Latin text books, there’s this one story called ‘Manlius, The Gauls and the Geese’ but somehow every year someone translates ‘The Geese honked and woke Manlius up so he could beat up the Gauls’ to ‘Geese with Swords.’ So I’m entering this into the art contest. :)

Blue-Billed Duck (Oxyura australis)
The Blue-Billed Duck is endemic to Australia, preferring to live in both natural and artificial wetlands. They are almost entirely aquatic, having difficulty walking. They are omnivorous, eating invertebrates as well as the fruit, seeds, and buds of aquatic plants.

Yes, I was this close -
Tumblr media
Went to the park to see my friends and took some green peas. I don’t think that was what they were looking for. You aren’t supposed to feed them bread but think many people do.
Tumblr media
Hey, don’t complain to me, I don’t make the rules. I got within one foot away and one tried to grab a pea out of my fingers.

The young ones came right up too. It was awesome just walking among them. Let’s see you get deer to come in this close @thisgingersnapped50 😃

Okay, so, I just really need y'all to know about these Canadian geese at my local duck pond. So, I live somewhere where there are no Canadian geese--they only come through here briefly for migration, and then go on their merry way to warmer parts of the continent. BUT, one year, this one goose just refused to keep migrating. He just kind of went, "yes, this duck pond is big, clean, and has a fence around it, and people throw me snacks all the time, so I will stay here." And he did. So every year since then, all the geese come through and they all leave, and he stays by himself and lords it over the ducks and splashes around in the pond and has a great time.
But what do you think happened this year? I was walking by the duck pond and saw that the goose not only had a mate, but four fluffy goslings! He somehow managed to convince another goose to stick around, and to me this is the love story to end all love stories, thank you very much, that is all.

Paradise Shelduck (Tadorna variegata)
Endemic to New Zealand, Paradise Shelducks are the most widely distributed waterfowl there. They typically mate for life and usually live as pairs. They first breed in their second or third years of life, forming strong bonds with their mate and defending their territory.
