A soft, plush heart lies in the chest of someone so hardened by battle, it’s surrounded by thorny gates and malevolent guards. It goes badump, badump, badump whenever it sees a beautiful being. There’s no arguing with that. The eyes soften, something that always seems to happen whenever you’re around, and the badump, badump, badump of his heart starts up again, you working as the trigger.

A warmth envelops every nook and cranny of his soul. All the faults hidden away from view, secluded in shadows so dark, even the black of a midnight sky wouldn’t be able to compare. But somehow, they’ve been bared, in the light for you- and only you- to see. The coldness of a stern heart shrouded in a blanket of unfeeling peels away, replaced with a warmth so fuzzy, so cosy, it brings a sense of nostalgia. They’re blurry, these nostalgic memories, maybe they don’t even exist, but the raw emotion he feels, makes him believe that it’s beautiful either way.

A voice calls out his name. It’s a hushed whisper, yet so distinctively uttered with the underlying joy that’s ever present whenever he finds himself with you. At least, that’s what he’d like to believe. He’d like to assume that the same kind of butterflies settle in your stomach, the same way his had found a home, comfortable and loving. They no longer flutter around nervously, like scurrying ants, but flap their scarred wings, content with the warmth. He’d like to assume that your heartbeat syncs up with his, but maybe he doesn’t, because it’s definitely unhealthy to have it beating at such speeds as his.
