Gracjan Dunajski (he/him), 665, male

Being an eight year old in 14th century Europe sucked. When plague hit Gracjan’s town and he got infected, his mother lost it. There were stories about this demonic immortal group living in the ruins of an abandoned castle near town and she ran there for help. They laughed at her. Gracjan watched as they fed on her and when they were done, they turned to the boy. The clan leader stopped them. He thought it would be funny to have an immortal child running around…he didn’t think it was funny a hundred years later when Gracjan took his position. Now, he stays with Lucia. Not because they particularly like each other, but because it’s convenient for both of them. If he could, he would’ve murdered her a long time ago. Yeah, long story short, don’t mess with this child, and don’t tell him he’s cute unless you want an instant ticket to afterlife.

Pulj, Viceadmiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff (1827, Maribor - 1871, Dunaj)

V Mariboru rojeni baron Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, se je v zgodovino avstrijskega cesarstva in pomorstva zapisal z znamenitim pomorskim spopadom pri otoku Visu v katerem je avstrijska mornarica pod njegovim vodstvom 20. 7. 1866, premagala sodobno opremljeno italijansko mornarico, ki je imela nekajkratno premoč v številu mornarjev, oborožitvi in ladjevju. Njen namen je bil zavzetje avstrijskega pomorskega oporišča na Visu. Mladi častnik Tegetthoff se je takoj odzval klicu na pomoč in na čelu avstrijskega ladjevja odplul iz Fažanskega kanala. Po 15 urni plovbi je prišlo do nekaj ur trajajočega zmagovitega spopada s katerim si je cesarstvo pridobilo pol stoletno prevlado na Jadranskem morju. V znak hvaležnost je bil Tegetthoff takoj po spopadu povišan v čin viceadmirala in bil do svoje smrti poveljnik kraljeve mornarice. Nenadna smrt je leta 1871 presekala njegovo življenjsko pot in cilje, ne pa tudi slave o čemer so govorili tudi postavljeni spomeniki na ozemlju cesarstva. Na ukaz cesarja Franca Jožefa so mu v znak hvaležnost leta 1877 postavili spomenik v Pulju, na vzpetini pred observatorijem. Bronasti spomenik v nadnaravni velikosti je izdelal dunajski kipar Carl Kudmann. Kip Tegetthoffa je stal na stopničasti marmorni podlagi na kateri je bil štirikoten bronasti blok. Kip je bil obrnjen proti puljskemu pristanišču v roki pa je imel daljnogled. Ob kipu so bile štiri skulpture v podobi Marsa boga vojne, Neptuna boga morja, Glorie boginje slave in Fame boginje govorice. Po 1. vojni so italijanske oblasti zasedle Pulj in aprila 1920 odstranile kip, ki je bil shranjen v Benetkah. Pred 2. svetovno vojno je Italija izročila kip avstrijskim oblastem, ki so ga postavile in slovesno odkrile 1. 12. 1935, na Elizabetinem trgu v Gradcu kjer je na pokopališči Sv. Leonhard tudi Tegetthoffov grob. Kip slavnega viceadmirala Tegetthoffa je bil 1883 postavljen in odkrit tudi v rojstnem Mariboru, vendar je bil po 1. vojni uničen. Leta 1931 je bila porušena tudi njegova rojstna hiša. Razglednica je bila poslana 1913.  

Leta 1866 mu je bil dodeljen naslov častnega meščana mesta Ljubljane.

Ajdič je napisal knjigo o tem, kako je bil izbrisan iz slovenske kulture. Avtobiografijo, kako je srečal Hitlerja in Broza, razstavljal v stavbi nemškega parlamenta, ko je nastala naša država in zakaj ne ceni medijev in novinarjev

V 86 letu starosti se je poslovil slovenski umetnik Andrej Ajdič, akademski slikar, grafik in kipar, rojen 1937 leta v Laškem. Po študiju na dunajski Akademiji za uporabno umetnost se je leta 1961 vrnil v Slovenijo. Ajdič je napisal zanimivo knjigo o tem, kako je bil izbrisan iz slovenske kulture. V knjigi opisuje, kako je srečal Adolfa Hitlerja in Josipa Broza, kako je razstavljali v stavbi…

so i’m writing a queer fantasy

I’ve had this idea knocking around in my head for a couple of years but it wasn’t until November last year that I really started fleshing out the story and getting a solid plan for it put together.

I’ve finally put together a rough plot and decided to share my ideas and worldbuilding with y’all as I work through it to kind of hold myself accountable. My goal is to get a solid, detailed outline finished in 2020. I’m giving myself a lot of wiggle room because I have other obligations, and what with the current state of the world, I don’t want to give myself burnout.

I hope you’ll all stick with me as I dev my story! 💛

Synopsis

Set in a pseudo-medieval Europe (Balkan/Danubian/Black Sea regions) fantasy setting, this story takes place in a world where magic and fate are chaotic and ruled by irony. The story follows a lot of themes of old mythologies and folklore where Hubris™ is punishable by the Gods and messing with magic can get you killed.

Our protagonist Kass lives in a pagan village on the edge of an ever-expanding Empire, whose culture is being erased over time as new norms and religions take hold of the region. This year, a plague has struck and, egged on by the Empire’s people, the locals become superstitious, turning on each other in their hunt for answers. When a mauled corpse turns up, Kass is persecuted and their body thrown into a pile to be burned with others stricken by plague.

Unbeknownst to the townsfolk, Kass survives, having transformed for the first time into a werewolf, and flees into the woods. They seek out the help of a witch to cure their “curse” and things snowball from there. There’s romance, some spooky forest shenanigans, enough personal revelations to knock Kass’s socks off, and they find that they have to embark on a quest across countries, through enemy territory, in a journey of self discovery, self acceptance, and a need to kick imperialism in the teeth.

This is essentially a queer power fantasy, written with the idea of subverting traditional tropes about racial- and queer-coded monsters and how media has historically reserved villainy for people who are othered in society. Our monsters are the good guys, and their “monstrosity” is their strength in a hostile world.

Main Characters

Kass Kovách [they/them] - Kass is a 26yo disabled, AFAB non-binary bisexual polyamorous werewolf. They are a metalsmith, having apprenticed under their uncle Theo for 14yrs. They come from a somewhat comfortable background, and begin the story without much thought put into the encroaching Empire beyond the fact that its soldiers bring money to their business. Kass has aspirations of travelling East to see great cities and learn from metalsmithing masters there. A hard worker and dedicated to their family, Kass tries their best to keep things afloat during times of peril, but falls short when other members of their community become victims of circumstance. Over the course of the story, strife changes Kass’s perspective on the world around them, and they come to use their newfound power as a werewolf to do good and protect people from tyranny.

Mila Erdős [she/her] - Mila is a 25yo Black cis bisexual polyamorous witch. A talented healer and scholar of magic, Mila trained for over a decade under the tutelage of a Black trans woman, Darcie Gunnarsen, before taking over her duties as a local mage. Despite being ostracised from society for her use of “peasant magic”, Mila is a kind woman who values her independence and work as a healer greatly. She has a strong moral compass and doesn’t believe in compromising her values for others. Unlike Kass, she sees the suffering of those around her but isn’t confident in her abilities to make a difference. Over time, she learns to use her strengths and fights to liberate the people from imperialism.

She also has a cute and snarky pigeon familiar called Boško!

Marcel Dunajski [he/him] - Marcel is a 99yo blind, cis asexual vampire. He comes from a family of old money, and owned a massive estate in his youth prior to becoming a vampire at 28yrs old. Due to his vampiric condition, he lives in isolation with Mila in the forest, and uses her familiar as a companion and helper to get around when he can’t see*. He is an outspoken and fun-loving individual, often saying that he lives vicariously through his friends. Marcel spends his time (which he has a lot of these days) on his various hobbies, including painting, crafts, and scaring people in the woods. He’s half the reason the locals think the forest is haunted, and he’s very proud of this achievement. He has a history with social justice and an infamous feud with long-dead members of the ruling class, and tries to keep his identity as an immortal hidden so he can’t be held accountable for his various misdemeanours.

*Vampires in this world have magical abilities like night vision, and so Marcel can only partially bypass his disability at night when his powers “turn on”. Night vision =/= how other people generally see, and there are trade offs to using his powers. This takes energy to use and is not a permanent fix for his sight — and he has no concerns about getting rid of his disability anyway. The magic in this world is never going to be used as a “cure” for characters’ disabilities.

¿Y? ¿Has perdido muchas cosas? No, por suerte solo algunos platos y alguna teja caída del techo. Un árbol destrozó la casa a mi lado, eso ha sido una verdadera desgracia, pero... Tengo miedo, Clara. Yo también Matilde, esta vez lo muros y esa cosa* allí... Da mala espina, lo sé, no tiene explicación alguna. No la tiene, al menos no una razonable. Al fin me oyes, al fin abres los ojos Matilde. No todo lo que te mencionaba estaba tan errado o era de loca con chimentos, ¿verdad? Lo sé. Simplemente que... ahora que se puede asegurar que aquí pasa algo inexplicable... ¿Cómo se puede encontrarle explicación a lo que no la tiene? Es un buen punto, pero.. he oído voces, cosas, rumores, jaja si, como suelo hacerlo, pero óyeme Matilde, parece ser que cuando todos bajamos a los subterráneos algunos quedaron aquí arriba, y vieron cosas penetrar el pueblo desde los bosques, como vientos con rostro. ¿Vientos con rostro? Si si, helados, que le sacaron la vida a tres personas de un abrazo, están internados ahora, en el Health Home, en coma*. ¡Oh por...! ¡Qué?! Sabes... no sé si decirte esto pero... esos vientos fríos que siento ahora, que soplan en este primero de enero... me dan mala espina. ¿Qué dices mujer? ¿No crees que sean esos vientos con rostros, tal vez? ¡Ay! Calla ya, ¡que horror! * se refieren a la nueva torre de tejado azul que se ha alzado, junto a la muralla.

¿Qué decir? Faltan las palabras para expresar tanta consternación. Sin luz, sin agua, sin gas, sin tren, otra vez. Tenemos un grupo electrógeno que nos provee electricidad en la redacción, suficiente para prender las computadoras y correr un poco la heladera. Como todos notaron los muros, esos que lamentablemente ya bien conocemos, ahora la torre que se yergue en uno de sus extremos nos da por demás qué pensar, analizar y sentir.

No queremos ahondar demasiado en lo que ya hemos repetido hasta el hartazgo, pero pecaremos de algo: lo hemos advertido. Algo había, había se escondía. Y parece que salió a la luz en forma de torre, con tejado azul. Hemos notado la bandera y su corona dorada, como todos. Las autoridades están ocupadas de aquí allá, con grupos de rescate, limpiando el suelo, sacando árboles de casas, tratando que el pueblo vuelva a ser digno y es por eso que no los hemos ido a molestar con nuestras preguntas. Aún. Toda información que sepamos, tal sean, servicios eléctricos, novedades del tren, o de la aparición en persona de una antigua torre, os haremos llegar de inmediato. Por ahora, a dos de enero el caos empieza a re-construirse y el Plan de AutoAbastecimiento está en marcha. Los locales de comida tienen prohibido vender más de dos productos por familia, y se venden dos litros de agua por persona por día. Nos informaron si, que hay en stock suficientes recursos para un mes entero de aislamiento e incluso más. Lo tienen todo guardado y planeado, dadas las veces que nos hemos topado con desastres de tal envergadura. Bien para nosotros, luego de tanto sufrir. Sean solidarios, ahorren, y ayuden.

Tenemos el agrado de comunicarles, que los servicios de agua, gas y luz finalmente vuelven a estar 100% operativos. Los servicios de telefonía y redes de comunicación externas aún fallan, y andan menos de un 10% en total. La estación de tren permanece cerrada y aislada.

Rumores del 11 de Enero, 2016. Kyoto Market.

Siento que soy una fuente de malas noticias, Matilde. Malas e incómodas, Clara. No ayudas demasiado... Jajaja, ¿qué ha pasado ahora? Hay un rumor inquietante y extraño, bueno como todos pero... en el Lodge Gazeta no avisaron nada. ¿Sobre? El hijo de la señora Sellers parece que está desaparecido. ¿Desaparecido? ¿Hace cuánto? Dicen que un grupo de exploradores fue a ver la torre esa y... no ha regresado a su casa desde ese día. ¡Ah si! Esa exploración... No terminó muy bien, ¿no? No, para nada. ¿Sabes algo más? Algunos nombres de vecinos que han ido... creo que se ha colado la información. Estoy segura que en tanto llegue a oídos de La Alcaldía tomarán medidas. No se puede acercarse uno a esa torre sin sentirse mal. Eso es cierto, hace días que de allí se percibe una energía extraña. Si, en la residencia Saint Lorene, que está tan cercana dicen que están sucediendo cosas raras. ¿Cómo cuáles? Objetos que se mueven solos, puertas que van y vienen, relojes locos, y serios problemas de desmayos y pérdidas de conciencia. ¿Y la señora Delorose? ¡Ah! Ella sigue igual. Pero ayer la crucé en el hospital, seguro fue a ver a su hijo que sigue internado. Tu te cruzas a todo el mundo. Seguro hasta has hablado con el Alcalde y todo, tras el sismo. De hecho lo hice, fui a ver la reunión o conferencia que dio el 5 de enero... informando sobre los peligros de la torre y la investigación que se llevará a cabo y... bueno, simplemente como todos sabemos... Si, no acercarnos a los límites. De nuevo. Pero parece que varios ya no hacen caso. Y así estamos, cada día hay más reportes de internados y desaparecidos. Me pregunto cuando nos tocará a nosotras, amiga. ¡Calla!

Lamentamos mucho que el día de ayer el periódico se haya visto cerrado temporalmente, pero creemos que ya es de público conocimiento la desaparición de Matt Sellers, el hijo de la editora del Lodge Gazeta. Siempre mantuvimos un relativo anonimato nombres y condiciones, porque creemos en la verdad sin caras o partidos. La señora Sellers ha sufrido una decaída estos días y ha encargado la redacción a sus ayudantes. Nos encargaremos de llevar este prestigioso emblema del pueblo con honores. Por lo pronto destacaremos las siguientes novedades: — Se busca el paradero de Matt Sellers. Si alguien lo vio o sabe algo, llamar a la redacción del periódico: 00-120. — Los muros a día de hoy siguen alzados, al igual que la misteriosa Torre Azul. Se rumorea que a su alrededor han ocurrido extraños sucesos y ha habido más de un vecino imprudente tratando de entrar. Se han reportado varios heridos los primeros días y por lo que pudimos averiguar, la excursión de hace unas semanas, dio ideas a otros a hacer lo mismo. — Los rumores avecinan malos augurios y sombras por las calles. Vecinos creen ver por las noches sombras rondando las calles del pueblo, así como curiosos ruidos y movimientos inesperados. — Servicios de comunicaciones inaccesibles. Aún las señales de comunicación fallan y no pueden ser utilizadas, nos quedamos sin Internet, televisión y teléfono ya por dos largas semanas. Los más jóvenes son los que sufren más las consecuencias. — La Alcaldía dará un segundo discurso este Lunes 18 para dar parte de como el Plan de AutoAbastecimiento va funcionando y novedades varias para el pueblo. Los vecinos como siempre pueden asistir al Hall del TownHall para más datos. Pero nosotros, de todas maneras, les traeremos la información apenas la redactemos.

Tras tanto revuelo y secretismo, característica recurrente en este último año de La Alcaldía, nos hemos enterado de buena fuente que una de las doctoras del Health Home ha caído presa producto de un contrabando ilegal de medicamentos. Su nombre Svetlana X. Dunajski, y por ahora se reservan el paradero de la actual procesada. Fuentes cercanas informan que no la han visto luego del arresto en ningún sitio, suponemos que estará tras las rejas en la policía, pero no nos dejan acceder al sector. Nos informan que el arresto era por un contrabando de medicamentos ilegales, usados para una supuesta mejoría de efectos adversos, leáse, para el uso de supuestos afectados, que eran consumidos por algunos pueblerinos en secretismo. No se sabe mucho de la elaboración de los mismos, si ella era quién los producía o sólo era la encargada de repartirlos. Sea el caso que fuese, es un grave delito, penado con varios años de cárcel. Estaremos al pendiente, por si aparece más información. Y es justo añadir, que cualquier posible afectado que haya consumido de esas drogas, puede quedar también bajo el ojo de la policía y las autoridades. Parece que incautaron información, anotaciones y cuadernos de valor, con nombres y consumo de cada uno. De ser así, ésta es una bomba que puede explotar en cualquier momento.

Última semana de Enero, 2016

Contando veinticinco días desde el encierro y aislamiento del pueblo, tras los altos muros de piedra, hemos obtenido información relevante para todos los vecinos: "Desde La Alcaldía nos informan que se ha reportado actividad extraña fuera de los muros. Ruidos, ambiente climático peculiar y alguna criatura salvaje que ronda el perímetro. Es por eso que aún permanecemos aislados a la espera de una próxima investigación.
