I read a fic about that time Athena hosted a dinner for her ex-husband's lover and it made me realize something.

Athena was not allowed to be angry and upset enough about the way her ex not only strung her along, which was bad enough but perhaps understandable, but also had a lover behind her back!

Part of my comment is, I really don't know how they swept under the rug the way Michael treated her not only to make him sympathetic but to make Athena not fully be able to express her heartbreak over it. This dinner, to me, did not need to happen. Even for the kids. Because one could argue it taught them they have to just roll over when someone treats them wrong. She can forgive Michael and move forward with him without having to entertain his lover! The fact that it's not even Michael who hosted the dinner was irritating. They/Michael basically invited themselves into her house!? Make it make sense.

It's not only how she laments that, had Michael cheated her with a woman, no one would expect her to host that woman. It's the fact that this man is forced upon her in her own house! It's really disrespectful all around and, paradoxically, I'm glad we moved on from that whole thing quickly cause it's fucked.

(The early season of that show do play fast and lose with the idea of fidelity. I still cannot believe that Hen so casually, with no alcohol or drug involved as a modicum of an excuse, cheats on her wife! And all that was blamed on the bloody full moon?! Unbelievable. Like, for real, there is not sense whatsoever in that.)

Johnny who can say the words “I love you” but Simon who mouths the words I love you onto Johnny’s skin

Soap who pretends he’s whispering some important confidential information to Ghost but is actually whispering “I love you” into his ear. Ghost who deadpans at him but mouths the words love you into his balaclava, knowing he’ll spot the words.

Soap that gets injured on a mission and Simon helping to clean his wounds the nest few days, replacing bandages and placing ointments, kissing the fresh bandage. In his dingy old bathroom, Simon would drape himself over Johnny, tucking his face into his neck as he giggles and presses a “love you” into his temple.

Simon who wishes one day that he could whisper the words onto every area of his skin, just because. It brought him a comforting feeling to know that Johnny was covered in his love. How his heart wants to climb out of his chest and be one with Johnny forever. He bleeds and his love is tender, it stings to the touch.

But for now, it would have to to. It will have to do. Simon can’t risk what they have, with what so little they have. So he will press his thumb to Johnny’s wrist to feel his pulse, murmur reassurances into an ear, squeeze the back of his nape, and it’ll be worth it. It’s okay. He’s okay.

It’s gonna be okay.

-Okay but some of the fears that Color has are in fact the same fears that Nightmare has when it comes to Killer.

Like, Color is worried that Killer's so blindly loyal to Nightmare for whatever reason that he wouldn't even think of complaining if he hated it. And at the start that was something Nightmare probably expected. His henchmen should be loyal and obedient and not ask questions nor complain. But now, after years of learning and bonding and softening up significantly he wonders sometimes if that's still the case.

Nightmare knows Killer well, perhaps better than most, but he's not exactly an open book. Especially when it comes to his own wants or needs. More often than not when he makes a request it's intentionally silly or unreasonable for laughs, like asking if they can take Dust to the nearest pet store and try to trade him in. Very rarely does he want something strong enough to make it known, both to himself and others, like asking to keep the first cat he found.

So.

If he hated this. If he truly struggled and fought and agonised with himself about the position he's in and the work he's doing and the life he leads.

Would he say it? Would he realise that was how he felt? Would he even consider saying no was an option?

If Nightmare asked him to do something he really genuinely did not want to, would he just do it anyway because he doesn't believe he has a choice in the matter?

The only way of finding out (besides making a blatantly difficult request of him, which Nightmare is not willing to do) is to simply wait and trust that Killer will tell him if something is wrong. Which... is not exactly foolproof or easy.

But it's part of why Nightmare hates to be around Color too much, because deep down he's more than a little worried that Color could be right and he doesn't know how to fix it.

One thing I've discovered is I'm genuinely incapable of speaking about OFMD in the past tense.

It's never "it was a beautiful show." It is a beautiful show.

It's never "I loved this show so much." I love this show so much.

It's never "the cast/crew were so great." The cast/crew are so great.

Now, if I'm talking about a specific moment, there may be some exceptions. ("They were so in love here." "The writers did such a good job with this scene.")

But anything to indicate the show is simply done, in the past? Nope. Simply cannot be done. And on the rare occasions I find myself writing something in past tense, I'll stop, squint, go "that's not right," and re-work the sentence entirely.

And you might read this and go "ok, your clown wig is a bit too tight there," and maybe it is. I'm not going to lie, I'm right there with DJenks hoping we get to see how this story ends, and I do think we have a solid chance of it once this dumpster fire of a streaming landscape finishes devouring itself.

But that's really not what this is about. To me, OFMD isn't just a finite, 18-episode show that's over and done, that gets put in a box and shoved away, forgotten. It's infinite. It is.

The love continues, the excitement continues, the hope continues, the story continues. I can see our crew just over the horizon, and I do hope one day we get to call them home and we'll see them on our screens again. But even if we never do, they'll still always be right there, waiting.

It's a show that's all about hope, about how it's never too late for love and happiness and acceptance.

And I'm going to hold onto that for as long as I have to.

Since are almost certainly going to see Mat’s first meeting with the Aelfinn on screen this season, I have two major Finn Thoughts to toss out there before it airs:

ONE: Given the changes to the plot in the show so far, and the fact that the doorway we’ve glimpsed in the Tower appears to have both snakes and foxes carved into it, I would be willing to bet that all redstone doorways in the show allow access to the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, if not at the same time, and that that Mat might actually be meeting both groups in the same scene. He wanders through while the Wondergirls are in the Depository investigating the Black Ajah, gets his answers and is pushed out, and immediately turns around and charges back in only to find a completely different group of freaks to make demands of. This would also solve the problem of the other doorway in Rhuidean; Rand will be able to get his answers without going to the Tower, and it can also easily be revealed that Moiraine already visited the Aelfinn in the past – maybe twenty years ago, or maybe during season 1. As to how they’re all getting in there at once, I have no idea. Mat entering the Tower’s doorway at the same time that Rand (and Moiraine???) enter Rhuidean’s would make sense to me – though I’m not sure how much time the Tower and Rhuidean will be allotted, and how those will line up with each other.

TWO: I hope the show reveals Mat’s fluency in the Old Tongue to us by having one side comprehensible to us and the other untranslated. The Finn speak in the Old Tongue and Mat responds in English (to us) but doesn’t miss a beat, with both sides clearly understanding each other – or vice versa, with Mat shouting in the Old Tongue – so you the viewer pick up that Mat’s a little fucked up immediately but Mat himself has no idea.
