Read them right here: 90skidstory.com
The cast page has also been updated with the latest characters.
I'm not quite done yet - I still have the Season 3 album art and soundtrack to create.
A big thanks to my readers, whoever you are, whether you just like slice of life, time travel, or fun stories. Or you wanted to relive a little of the 90s. This was a personal project and I hope the characters felt alive and even relatable to the kids you grew up with. This is more a story about nostalgia and childhood than any particular decade, though the the 1990s certainly gave it a unique flavor. From challenging myself like using a 22 page restriction per chapter to simulate TV show episodes, or improving my illustration abilities these last 4 years (July 18th 2019 to July 18th 2023!), and adapting real-life experiences into the "epic" moments seen through a kid's eyes, this series has been a joy to write, and I think it's fully stuffed with gooey comfort food nostalgia for a decade long gone without quite going overboard, and it explores the connections in the present we have with the past — while mentioning that the ticking now isn't all bad! There are always nice new things to look forward to, and friends to make.
When I began writing back in 2018, the pandemic wasn't even a blip on the radar and 2020 was still the future (and now it's hard to believe it's already 3 years in the past!). While that global event not showing up in The 90's Kid meant pushing the universe into an even further branching timeline than our own, some of the chapters I most enjoyed writing were with Jace and his friends in an alternate version of 2020. And while millennials and older generations might find the things kids are into these days "cringe" and "trash," remember that your parents probably thought the same things about what we grew up with a few decades ago. So, don't worry about today's youth. They're going to turn out fine, and in thirty years, I bet a lot of them will long for those "awesome" 20s Kid days. And some of them might even still be wearing their Nirvana shirts, too. Like a churning ocean current, nostalgia is about cycles, and you never know what might come back to the surface again.
Still, as Wes learns... dial down the tint on those rose-colored glasses a little, and try to live in the present. Old stories are great; but you should be there to help write the new ones.

YOU LIKE FINNISH MUSIC TOO?? What bands should I listen tooooo, I listen to some already but I need more
Yooooo! This is like the best ask I could possibly get!! Thank you anon <3
So, what should you listen to? That really depends on the genres you vibe with, but luckily, I’m not picky!
Recently, I’ve picked up Jambo. Rapper, but with huge range as far as the styling of his music goes. His most recent album has been pretty successfull, earning him his first Emma nomination too, which is really cool. And damn is he good live. He says he’s better live than in the studio and I fully believe that. Not to mention he has great chemistry with his band! Favourite songs of his, currently, are E18, Elefantti Huonees, Meille, and Ei Nabbaa. Those should show you pretty well the range of his style.
Pilvet Pilvet is another one I’ve gotten into recently. Really chill, soulfull rock. They are a really new band, only started releasing stuff last year, and are already climbing fast, doing shows with some big names like Joker Out and Robin Packalen. If you like Kuumaa, you’ll probably like these guys too. The vibes are a bit different but the music hits the spot. They have very few releases as of now, so pretty much all of it is good.
Similar to them, in just the last couple of weeks, I’ve gotten into Tiikerin Vuosi. Chill, more old school style Finnish rock. They headlined a May Day event in Helsinki this year, which I heard they applied for as somewhat of a joke, thinking they wouldn’t get the gig. Definitely worth it though, and I can see why they were picked. Songs I’d recommend are Töölönlahti and Sirkka Linnea (and Havis Amanda if they ever release that. It was written for the event but it was very catchy.)
Okay, those all are quite obscure picks, so let’s discuss some more arguably mainstream stuff.
I like rap, so one more rapper I’ve been head over heels for is Etta. Really strong party music, with some more hard hitting emotional stuff thrown into the mix. Her voice is really beautiful, and she also convinces live (you can watch her Emma Gaala performance from 2022 if you wanna get a taste). Klubiruusu, Demoneista Ystävii and Piilota Sun Sydän are good songs to start off with.
In the pop realm of things, right now I’ve been getting into Bee. She is also one of the breakthrough artists of last year, and has been getting a ton of radio plays for her singles Viimeisiä Sanoja and Silkkiin Verhoiltuna. Haven’t listened to much of her stuff yet beyond that, but as far as pop goes, she one of the few I’ve been recently inclined to check out.
Also, ever the queen, Kaija Koo is always a safe bet. Long career behind her and she’s still staying strong, this is like peak Finnish karaoke pop for middle ages women. Favourotes of mine are Mun Sydän, Sateenkaari Pimeessä and Tanssii Itsensä Kanssa.
Speaking of long career artists, Jenni Vartiainen has just made a comeback to the mainstream. She is a known name in pop, and has an absolutely gorgeous discography. Favourotes there are Ihmisten Edessä, Turvasana and Made In Heaven.
And just to round this off, as far as metal music goes, I’ve been getting into Arttu Lindeman. Nothing ground breaking there, but just some solid nu metal as he describes it. Really aggressive lyrics and all. Elä Niinku Huvittaa and Koirat Syö Koiria are the ones I started out with.
Okay, I could keep going but we’d be here all day, so I’ll leave you with this. Anything from the past 4 years of Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu is also mostly great (including the interval acts). Which is not surprising, since it is the song contest to highlight new music from Finland. Looking through those artists might take a while though, even if it’s only 7 competitors per year.
And for any Finnish music enjoyer reading this, feel free to hop on with your favourites in the replies or reblogs or whatever. I tried to pick some of the ones I talk about less on this blog, so we’d get some variety.
(Come on, Olli Matela from Blind Channel is literally my pfp, my header is Hella from Lordi, the red theming is for Kuumaa’s new album, and my most used tag is Käärijä. If that doesn’t say it all, idk what will.)
And thank you for this ask anon! You really made my day <3

Remembering ~ Jim Croce
Jim was an American folk and rock singer-songwriter. Between 1966 and 1973, he released five studio albums and numerous singles. During this period, Croce took a series of odd jobs to pay bills while he continued to write, record, and perform concerts.
After he formed a partnership with songwriter and guitarist Maury Muehleisen his fortunes turned in the early 1970s. His breakthrough came in 1972; his third album, You Don't Mess Around with Jim, produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached No. 1 after his death. The follow-up album, Life and Times, contained the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which was the only No. 1 hit he had during his lifetime.
During Croce's Life and Times tour and the day before his ABC single "I Got a Name" was released, Croce and all five others on board were killed when their chartered Beechcraft E18S crashed into a tree during takeoff from the Natchitoches Regional Airport in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
Born ~James Joseph Croce on January 10, 1948 in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and died on September 20, 1973 in Natchitoches, Louisiana at the age of 30.

What do you consider to be Mercedes’ most important scenes in each season she’s in?
Oooh good question!! Mercedes has so many good scenes in the first few seasons so this’ll be hard haha
S1: Okay there are two scenes that come to mind right off the bat because I just watched these episodes lol. So the first is in Ballad which is episode ten, when she basically tells Puck to stop ruining Quinn’s life lol. Now I don’t think it was right for Quinn to lie to Finn about the baby being his, but that’s her business to tell him. Mercedes was right in telling Puck that because Quinn chose Finn, Puck needed to back off from Quinn and stop trying to win her over. Ik he was doing it in the name of helping the baby but we all know he just wanted Quinn. Even though Quinn and Mercedes were barely friends, Mercedes was still willing to stick up for her and I think that really shows her character (I also think this sets up Mercedes and Quinn being friends which is why Quinn wanted her in the delivery room in the finale)
The second scene is in the next episode, Hairography, when Mercedes starts singing with the deaf choir. I know it’s such a small scene but it makes me sob haha and I love that Mercedes was the first one willing to stand up and sing with the other choir
S2: Hmm okay the first thing that comes to mind is in Grilled Cheesus (ep 3). Okay idk if this is weird but I actually really liked this episode? Lol. But I like the scene where Mercedes invites Kurt to church and she dedicates the service to Burt. I think it’s really touching and I also like that Mercedes invited Kurt because it’s something that’s important to her and she wanted to share that with him but she also didn’t pressure or guilt him into going and idk I just really liked that part and again I think it’s a good show of her heart and how much she cares for her friends
Another small thing, but another moment is in Special Education (ep 9) when she stands up to cheer for Kurt/The Warblers and then she gets all the other ND to stand up. Frankly most of the kids in ND were awful to Kurt and only cared about him when he was leaving and they were all so salty about him joining the Warblers. But Mercedes was still there not only supporting Kurt but encouraging everyone else to do the same because they should be supportive of him if they’re really his friends
S3: Okay this season is kinda tough because Mercedes’ character arc was... interesting in this season hahaha. I think in this season her most important scene would be in Nationals (episode 21) when she lets Quinn and Tina keep her solos. As she mentions, it’s her last chance to perform. But because it’s Quinn’s last chance too, and she doesn’t want to take the solo away from Tina either, she still lets them sing. I just think it’s a really sweet moment and it shows how much she cares about the group as a whole and not just herself (*cough rachel cough*)
S4: Okay so this season is also tough because she’s like hardly in it lol. What I’m about to say is v biased because I can’t stand Kitty but I think the part where she puts Kitty in her place in Wonder-ful (ep 21) is important. Kitty is awfully stuck-up but nobody ever calls her out including Mr. Schue. When Mercedes says her performance isn’t all it’s cracked up to be she’s 100% right, plus she wasn’t doing it in a mean way, she genuinely wants Kitty/ND to have their best shot at winning. Kitty just stucks and I’m glad Mercedes stood her ground lol
S5: Hmm for this season I would probably say the part in The Back-Up Plan (e18) when she sticks up for Santana and gets her a contract. Even when her producer tries to get her to sing the duet with somebody more famous (and Santana admits that’s what she would do if she were Mercedes), Mercedes says no and fights for Santana to be on the album. Mercedes thinks Santana deserves the contract and helps her even though in HS Santana treated her awfully, and it also shows Mercedes’ integrity because she could’ve taken the cop-out and sung with someone famous just to get more sales but instead she wanted to be the best she could be and authentic to herself
S6: Okay again the Mercedes content in this season is ✨lacking✨ but oh well. I think the most important scene would actually be in 2009 (episode 12). I love the part where Kurt comes up to her because at first she’s like “who is this child talking to me” lmao but as soon as Kurt explains he wants help she’s so willing to help him even though they just met
Thanks so much for asking, this was super fun! :)

DEAN MARTIN
June 7, 1917 - December 25, 1991
Tumblr media
Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio and became one of the most popular and enduring entertainers of the mid-20th century. A singer, actor, and comedian, Martin’s career breakthrough came in 1946 through his partnership with comedian Jerry Lewis, billed as Martin & Lewis. They performed in nightclubs and later had numerous appearances on radio, television and in films.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball’s first appearance with Dean Martin was on his NBC radio show with Jerry Lewis in December 1948. Lucy was then the star of her own radio show, “My Favorite Husband” on CBS.
Tumblr media
Following an end to their partnership in 1956, Martin established himself as a notable singer, recording numerous contemporary songs as well as standards from the Great American Songbook. His hit singles, including his signature songs "That's Amore", "Everybody Loves Somebody", "You're Nobody till Somebody Loves You", "Ain't That a Kick in the Head?" and "Volare".
Tumblr media
He became one of the most popular acts in Las Vegas and was known for his friendship with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., who together formed the Rat Pack. Throughout his career, Martin appeared in 85 film and television productions. In the above photo at the Sands Casino, the Rat Pack is joined by Lucy and Danny Thomas (top) and Gary Morton (right).
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and Wayne Newton” (HL SS2;E2) the Carters are driving down the Las Vegas strip when Craig notices that Dean Martin is playing at the Riviera. Kim says “He’s one of my favorites!”
Tumblr media
“I'd hate to be a teetotaler. Imagine getting up in the morning and knowing that's as good as you're going to feel all day.” ~ Dean Martin
Part of Dean’s act involved his affection for alcoholic beverages. Jokes about Dean Martin’s drinking were common, even when Dean was not part of the show.
In “Lucy the Disc Jockey” (TLS S3;E26) Lucy tries to see the title of the song on a spinning turntable and gets dizzy, she says
“No wonder. It’s a Dean Martin album.”
In “Lucy the Stockbroker” (TLS S3;E25) Lucy discovers that Mr. Mooney is really hypnotized, not faking. Viv says
“He’s stiffer than Dean Martin.”
In “Lucy and Lawrence Welk” (HL S2;E18), Viv returns from the Universal Studios Tour and tells Lucy
“I saw...Dean Martin’s bartender.”
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball adored working with Martin, despite the fact that their working styles were polar opposites. Ball was committed to rehearsals where Martin preferred to ‘wing it.’  Due to her great affection for him, she put up with it.
Tumblr media
The first time Lucille Ball and Dean Martin appeared on the same television show (though not at the same time) came in 1950 on “Show of the Year: Telethon for United Cerebral Palsy” hosted by Milton Berle on NBC. It was broadcast from New York City with remotes from Philadelphia. (Photo, left to right: Gabby Hayes, Roger Clipp, UCP Poster Child, Jane Pickens, and Dennis James.)
Tumblr media
Dean Martin never appeared on “I Love Lucy,” but his second wife did! Former Orange Bowl Queen Jeanne Biegger (billed only as Mrs. Dean Martin) appeared as herself wearing a Don Loper dress in 1955’s “The Fashion Show” (ILL S4;E19). The couple divorced in 1973.  Martin then married Catherine Hawn, but the unioni lasted only three years.  Martin’s first wife was Betty McDonald, who he married in 1941 and divorced in 1949.  Martin had eight children.
“The three words you hear most around my house are 'hello,' 'goodbye,' and 'I'm pregnant.'" ~ Dean Martin
Tumblr media
Dean Martin was one of the performers at the Friar’s Club Roast of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz on November 23, 1958. The event, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, was not telecast.
Tumblr media
It would be ten years before Lucy and Dean again appeared on the same show (again, not at the same time) with “The Bob Hope Buick Sports Show Awards” in 1961.  The show primarily took place in Los Angeles, but Lucille Ball’s segment took place in New York City, where she was appearing in Wildcat.
Tumblr media
Two years later, Bob Hope presented the “TV Guide Awards.” Lucille Ball is nominated for Favorite Female Performer, but is not present. A still photo of her is shown instead.
Tumblr media
Starting in 1964, Martin was the host of the television variety program “The Dean Martin Show”, which was characterized by his relaxed, easy-going demeanor.  Lucille Ball appeared on the show in 1966 along with singer Kate Smith.
Tumblr media
In return, four days later Dean appeared on “The Lucy Show,” playing himself and his own stuntman, Eddie Feldman. Lucille Ball said that this was her favorite episode of “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Both Lucy and Dean were part of “Jack Benny’s Carnival Nights” in 1968, although once again they do not share screen time. Martin does a quick cameo  playing the Amazing Sleeping Man!  The opening of the show was performed on the set of “The Dean Martin Show” complete with fire pole and sexy assistants!
Tumblr media
Martin was in attendance at the “20th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” where Lucille Ball won her fourth (and final) competitive acting Emmy, along with  Bill Cosby (”I Spy”) and  Don Addams (”Get Smart”).
Tumblr media
In 1968, Lucille Ball (and many other stars) makes a cameo appearance on “The Dean Martin Christmas Show” to announce the donation of toys to children in hospitals. The cameos are filmed without Martin present.
Tumblr media
A year later, the two were also on the bill for “Ann-Margret: From Hollywood With Love.”  Dean Martin and Dean Martin sing a medley of country western songs and then do a sketch where the gender roles are reversed. Lucy, appearing in a separate segment, plays herself and an autograph hound named Celebrity Lu.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (and dozens of other stars) make guest appearanced on “The Dean Martin Show’s” sixth season opener in September 1970.
Tumblr media
In “Jack Benny’s 20th Anniversary Show” (November 1970) Lucy plays Jack’s maid, Janet, while Dean plays himself. Martin knocks on Jack’s dressing room door to wish him a happy anniversary and dance “The Anniversary Waltz” with him. The bit lasts less than 30 seconds.
Tumblr media
Later in November 1970, “John Wayne’s Swing Out Sweet Land” featured Dean Martin as Eli Whitney (of cotton gin fame) and Lucille Ball as the voice of Lady Liberty.
Tumblr media
In February 1975 “Dean Martin’s Celebrity Roast" was dedicated to Lucille Ball. On the dais, Martin presents Lucille’s friends and colleagues Bob Hope, Gale Gordon, Milton Berle, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers, Jack Benny, and Vivian Vance.
Tumblr media
A year later it was Lucille doing the roasting, this time of her friend Danny Thomas. Also on Martin’s dais are Orson Welles, Milton Berle, and Gene Kelly.
Tumblr media
Two year after that, in 1978, Lucille returned for yet another Dean Martin Roast, this time for her Beverly Hills neighbor, Jimmy Stewart.
Tumblr media
In 1975, on of the Lucille Ball CBS Specials was “Lucy Gets Lucky” starring Dean Martin. Ball plays Lucy Collins, who travels to Las Vegas to see her favorite star perform. To get into the sold out show she must work a variety of casino and hotel jobs!
Tumblr media
“NBC: The First 50 Years” (1976) was a four and a half hour extravaganza that naturally included clips of Dean Martin (who’s show was on the network) but also included Lucille Ball on “The Danny Kaye Show.”
Tumblr media
“CBS Salutes Lucy: The First 25 Years” (1976) includes Dean Martin talking about how much he loves working with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
At the start of 1980, Lucille Ball and Dean Martin are just two of the many guests in “Sinatra: The First 40 Years” celebrating his 64th birthday and 40th year in show business.
Tumblr media
“Bob Hope’s Unrehearsed Antics of the Stars” on  September 28, 1984 featured Lucy talking about her audition for Gone With The Wind and Dean Martin in a clip of a sketch with Hope about airline pilots.
Tumblr media
In 1984′s “An All-Star Party for Lucille Ball” Dean Martin sings “When You’re Smiling” with special lyrics to suit the occasion: “When you’re Lucy, When you’re Lucy, You’re never off TV.”
Tumblr media
Their last on-screen collaboration was to celebrate the opening of the Bob Hope Cultural Center at Palm Springs in “America’s Tribute to Bob Hope” in March 1988. Dozens of friends gather and offer comedy and musical performances to honor the building’s namesake including Lucille Ball, Dean Martin, George Burns, Ann-Margret, Dinah Shore, and Danny Thomas.
Tumblr media
A further connection came offscreen when Lucille Ball’s son Desi Aranz joined with Dean Martin’s son Dino and Billy Hinsche to form a rock band known as Dino, Desi and Billy.
“I want to be remembered as a damn good entertainer, nothing spectacular. A good entertainer who made people enjoy themselves and made them laugh a little. I want them to think 'He was a nice guy. He did pretty good and we loved him.'" ~ Dean Martin
