Man, from like a character growth perspective I don't think Damian's love of animals as actually...positive? Like it's nice that there are things outside his status/survival that he cares about, but... Damian was raised in an eco-terrorist cult. Being protective of animals while struggling with the Bats' no-killing-people rule is just, like, basic status quo for him?

Not that the League of Assassins didn't harm plenty of animals & plants & ecosystems in their world domination schemes & even day to day life but the idealism of "I will become vegetarian because I love Batcow so much" is not a change. It's not growth away from his upbringing. That's fine, Damian is allowed to find things from his early childhood valuable, and if he actually grappled with it all I could see that being positive growth. Him actually examining the values and coming to his own conclusions.

But the way it's presented in the comics and the things fans to do with it don't feel like growth or change to me. It mostly feels like people are focusing on the murder/violence aspects of the cult he was raised in and completely ignoring the eco-terrorism. Ignoring that the League of Assassins values a fantasy of nature over humanity. Like they forget it's even a thing. And again, the comics are very much focused on the Assassin part so that makes sense.

It just means many of the things written to make Damian endearing to the audience just fall flat for me.

Nature PSA: DO NOT LET YOUR DOGS WILD SWIM if you treat them with spot-on flea treatments

Flea treatments are pesticides and are having a knock-on effect in the wider environment, especially aquatic environments. Most of these flea treatments are neonicotinoids, the same family of pesticides known to be catastrophic to bees.

This is yet another reasons why cats should not be allowed to free roam too- when they are treated with flea products and then go and roll freely in gardens they are spreading around these harmful pesticides.

Insect and other invertebrate numbers have plummeted in the past 20 years. We need to get serious about the damage we are doing to this foundation of the ecosphere.

Zero waste pet ownership is a great thing to aspire to. Stick to safe, all natural toys made with renewable and compostable materials. If and only if your vet says that it's safe you can make food from scratch, or find some pet food bulk bins. If your cat is agreeable, use pine pellets for litter. Et cetera.

But it's 100% ok if that's not something you can do. My dog's favorite toy is made of polyester, and my cats only eat food that comes in non recyclable bags. And that's totally fine, because you have to recognize one thing: these animals' lives are our responsibility. Sacrificing their health, safety, or happiness for a tiny amount of difference in carbon use is not ok.

Understand that your priorities must be well aligned. This extends beyond pet care, and to all different kinds of consideration towards animals. It's fine to be vegan, but remember that all "vegan leather/wool" is plastic, and its production and degradation are terrible for the environment and the animals in it. It's great to focus on a plant based diet, but you must remember that the purchase of out of season fruits and vegetables create more waste and carbon emissions than simply buying local. There's nuance to all this, and you must have patience for both yourself and others.

Love your pets, and breathe easy. There's plenty of other aspects of living where you can prioritize a low impact lifestyle, without forsaking our beloved furballs.

I wish my house was a safer place to regress? I can't really clean/wash my baby stuff properly (pacis n bottles) cause my parents get weirded out or straight up get mad at me because I regress. I wonder if there's anything I can do to show them that yes I regress but I'm doing therapy n I'm trying my best to grow up n keep going with my life?
